Technology is changing the way New Zealanders interact with sports

Sport and technology are not things that most people immediately associate with each other but there are several reasons why technology and the gadgets, apps and websites sports fans use are changing the way people interact with sports forever. One place where this is especially true is in New Zealand.  Sports Websites in New Zealand In New Zealand, over 70% of residents over the age of 15 have gambled or bet, and most of this betting is done online with sports betting websites. These sports websites are hugely popular in New Zealand with total gambling and betting expenditure reaching over $2.4 billion New Zealand dollars between 2017 and 2018.  New Zealand currently has only one domestic operator that is allowed to offer sports betting from within New Zealand – the TAB NZ. However, right now the outdated New Zealand Gambling Act doesn’t restrict Kiwis’ use of international betting websites, which has led to many Kiwis betting offshore with operators who offer better sports odds, more generous bonuses and top-notch betting apps.  The rise in popularity of online bookmakers has led the New Zealand government to begin a review of New Zealand’s current betting and gambling laws. Sports Apps in New Zealand Sports betting apps offer New Zealanders the opportunity to take their sports bets on the go.  With free apps that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or directly from bookmakers’ websites, betting companies are making the mobile betting experience as painless as possible for Kiwis.  Many of these apps have a variety of features like live betting, live statistics, build your bet options and secure payments which often makes betting apps even better than their desktop alternatives. The popularity of betting apps has meant that some newer sportsbooks have created their whole company on a ‘mobile-first’ approach.  LeoVegas NZ is a prime example of this as they offer Kiwis a diverse range of sports markets and over 1100 casino games from their betting site that is optimized for mobile.  Live Streaming of Sports Some of the top European betting companies that cater to New Zealand bettors also offer live streaming capabilities.  This means that New Zealanders no longer have to buy local sports streaming subscriptions and can instead watch high-quality football, rugby, tennis and other sports from their desktop computers or smartphones. Bet365 and Betway are two of the top bookies for live streaming that are available in New Zealand. To access live streaming features, users just need to create a betting account and have funds in their e-wallet. Virtual Reality and Sports Some betting sites also offer the opportunity to view fantasy matches through VR headsets.  It is unproven whether this technology will catch on in New Zealand, and around the world, but for bettors who are looking for something extra, this is still a huge drawcard.  Summary The popularity of sports betting sites and apps is growing faster than it ever has before and this growth is especially apparent in New Zealand where sports betting used to be dominated by local tabs for so long. With the invention of the internet and widespread adoption of smartphones into our daily lives, technology has and will undoubtedly continue to shape the way fans interact with sports. eSports and online gaming continue to boom in Japan amid COVID-19

Despite the Coronavirus Pandemic which has greatly affected many industries in the world, esports and the gaming industry have been exceptionally resilient. While live sports were absent in the midst of the pandemic, global consumers quickly turned to esports and online gaming for entertainment accessible from home. Japanese people were no exception to this global trend. Earlier this year, the Japanese government announced a plan aimed at driving the domestic esports industry with an expected annual benefit of $2.6 billion (USD) by 2025. In the second quarter, PlayBrain reportedly raised fresh $6 million funds to grow esports in Japan.  Japan is fast catching up in esports regardless of having been a latecomer in comparison to its Asian neighbours such as China and South Korea. The esports revenue in the country was over $56 million in 2019 and the growth forecast is more than double, $141 million by 2024. The pandemic further heightened the public interest in esports, taking the spotlight in Japanese media as the current corona situation continues.   Meanwhile, Japanese public gambling is thriving as well regardless of a drop in domestic household consumption caused by COVID-19. In the practice of social distancing, Japanese gamblers swiftly shifted to wager on horses and powerboats online.  Gambling in Japan has been a multi-billion dollar industry. On top of Japan’s love for Pachinko, Japanese obsession with horse racing is unstoppable, boasting revenues of $27 billion in 2019 with a steady increase over the past five consecutive years. What is more, it’s not only the nation’s public gambling that is experiencing a boost, but foreign-owned iGaming operators are taking shares of the giant Japan market. An increasing number of offshore betting sites are attracting Japanese players to wager on a wide range of sports from J-League to Sumo. Needless to say, the growth of esports and online betting go hand in hand. The Corona pandemic has ushered in dramatic growth and opportunities in online betting as well. Without live sports to bet on, the spike in demand for esports betting became evident.  As a matter of fact, esports betting operator, Luckbox benefited from the 500% surge in esports betting during the peak of Corona lockdown. In May, the company successfully raised $2.8 million in preparation for a listing on the Toronto Venture Exchange. Many of the sports betting providers such as DraftKings and bet365 have quickly enhanced their offerings in the esports market. Looking at esports and online gaming scenes worldwide, these industries have been steadily evolving and shown astounding growth in recent years. The combination of increased home time and social distancing due to COVID-19 is likely to continue to drive higher demand for gaming leisure. Both esports and the online gaming industry are presented with fresh opportunities to boost their businesses in Japan, as the trend of growing interest in both sectors looks to continue to grow in the near future. Later on, the pricing was removed after the price was spotted by some of the journalists. And without any further delay, one of the publishers also took a screenshot. Way back in the year 2016 the company has accepted developing its smartwatch. Interestingly even its co-founder Carl Pei has shared the sketches of the smartwatch they are working on. The sketches have revealed a round dial but the company’s plan never took off. However, the upcoming OnePlus Watch will arrive with Google Wear OS operating system as all the OnePlus devices run on Google’s Android Operating system. The device is most likely to arrive by the end of this year. Though all these are speculation and it has risen after the launch of Oppo watch by its sister company, so you should take the information with a pinch of salt. Amazon Halo band and companion app introduced for tech freaks

0
In what seems to be a competition with Apple and Fitbit, Amazon has now introduced its Amazon Halo band and companion app for tech freaks to help them improve their health and wellness. Members can access a suite of AI-powered features through the Amazon Halo app, powered by the comfortable, innovative Amazon Halo Band. Monitor activity and sleep, analyze the user’s body composition and tone of voice and discover healthy habits that work for them. Halo is available via early access for US customers. “Halo is a new service designed to help you continually improve your individual health and wellness through better understanding it. That means we provide not just useful information, but also ways to put that information into action. Halo takes activity and sleep tracking a step further, plus introduces innovative new tools like body composition measurement, tone of voice analysis, and expert-backed habit labs,” said Melissa Cha, Vice President of Amazon Halo. Amazon applied its long-term expertise in computer vision (CV) and machine learning (ML) towards developing “Body,” a feature within Amazon Halo, the new health and wellness membership. With Body, the users can easily measure and track their BFP from the comfort and privacy of their own home, using only the smartphone’s camera and the Amazon Halo app. The body is powered by artificial intelligence (AI) developed by the CV and ML team and includes a suite of algorithms that can generate their personalized 3D body model, BFP, and body model slider, a vision of how the body could change as the users gain or lose body fat. The BFP measurement in Amazon Halo is as accurate as methods a doctor would use and nearly twice as accurate as leading at-home smart scales. So, if you’re used to getting your BFP from a smart scale, you should expect to see a difference. We tested accuracy using Dual-energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) which is considered the clinical gold standard for body composition and widely used, but these machines would require a doctor’s prescription. Whether the bathroom or bedroom, the users can take a body scan wherever they are most comfortable. They will need to wear tight, minimal clothing, tie up your hair, and keep about 4-6 feet of space between themselves and their phone. Once ready, the Amazon Halo app shows you exactly how to stand and guides you through taking four scan images—front, back, and each side. “In seconds, you’ll see your personalized 3D body model, BFP, and body model slider in the Amazon Halo app. It’s that simple! The model gives you a 3D view of your body at the time of that scan. Amazon Halo helps you understand where your BFP stands in relation to people of the same sex and age, and the slider can help you visualize how your body could change as you gain or lose body fat. Keeping the conditions consistent between scans will help achieve the best result. It takes time for your body fat to change. We recommend taking scans every 2 weeks and observe trends over a longer duration to track progress. We were excited to pilot the Body feature with WW members—more than 80 percent said it was a useful or motivational tool in their journey,” an Amazon blog post revealed. Amazon further added that health is inherently personal, and taking photographic scans of your body is about as private as it gets. This is the reason why Amazon Halo and Body were built with privacy in mind. The body scan images are automatically deleted from the cloud after processing. After that, the images and resulting personalized 3D body models are only stored locally on your phone. This means no one but you ever sees them unless you choose to share them with a friend or coach. And, of course, you can download or delete your Body data any time through the Settings tab in the Amazon Halo app that comes with Amazon Halo Band. Furthermore, you can also opt-into storing your Body scan images in the secure Amazon cloud. The users can opt back out any time directly from the Amazon Halo app and the images will automatically be deleted from the cloud. Besides Google Duo, Google Meet on Cast can help you turn any room in your house into your own personal conference room, taking advantage of your TV or a Smart Display. “Whether you want to step away from the notifications on your laptop or phone to be more present in a meeting or you are on mute in a larger meeting and want to concentrate on your task at hand, casting to your TV can help you be more productive and stay focused,” said TJ Varghese, Group Product Manager, Google Meet hardware.
