Instagram adds a new ‘Civic Engagement sticker’ for General Elections 2019 in India

0

India’s General Elections 2019 have kick-started today and a number of apps and online platforms are coming up with their own ideas and changes to support the elections and encourage more people to vote.

Facebook-owned Instagram has joined the election supporting apps by bringing a new civic engagement sticker for its platform. The General Elections 2019 have started today and will go on till May 19. They will decide the fate of the members of the 17th Lok Sabha and whose party will form the government.

The 2019 General Elections will be conducted in seven phases over the next one month. And during this time, the new civic engagement sticker can be used by the users on their Instagram stories to tell their contacts, followers about their experiences and excitements.

Speaking about the new feature, Tara Bedi, Public Policy and Community Outreach Manager of Instagram, India said, “Across the globe, Instagram connects people with the people and things they love and are passionate about. With a community of over 1 billion users, Instagram is now also a space for positive dialogue around important civic matters and discussions around citizenship. The sticker is an easy and expressive way for our community to share that they voted with their communities.”

Talking about the new sticker, it shows a hand with the blue ink on the index finger which, as we all know, represents the fact that a person has voted in the elections. To make this sticker, Instagram worked with an artist named Tara Anand, who is known for the strong representation of women in her illustrations, to design this custom sticker for Indian elections.

The new sticker can be used by opening the camera within Instagram and either taking a selfie or by writing something in the ‘Stories’ section of the app. Once the selfie is taken, before pushing it out to the Stories, the user is given an option to edit and add emoticons, words, or stickers to the selfie to make it look more interactive. The civic engagement sticker can be found in the stickers section, and the user can use it on their selfies and push it out to the Instagram Stories. Also, once the user taps and clicks on the new sticker, they will be directed to the National Voters Services Portal (electoralsearch.in/) which will help the voters find their respective polling locations during the different phases of elections.

The artist, Tara Anand commented on her process, “As a young woman who believes in speaking my mind and expressing my beliefs, I’m glad to have gotten this chance to partner with Instagram to encourage people to take part in this democratic process. I wanted to play with the iconic index finger with ink because it is the universal symbol for voting in India. It is a symbol that one is part of a large and important process. I hope the sticker is a fun addition to this process for many other first time voters and everyone else as well.”

But now, the company is further expanding its Echo range of smart speakers in India with the launch of two new devices – Amazon Echo Link and the Amazon Echo Link Amp. Thousands of Amazon employees listen to your Alexa conversations: Report

0

Amazon has made some heavy investments in artificial intelligence and has never shied away from saying that Alexa is still a work in progress. In Alexa FAQs, the company has specifically said, “The more data we use to train these systems, the better Alexa works, and training Alexa with voice recordings from a diverse range of customers helps ensure Alexa works well for everyone.”

However, there is something that Amazon also keeps quiet about. According to an investigative report by Bloomberg, the best and the only way to make Alexa better is by having humans listen to voice recordings of the requests that are made by customers. Amazon does mention this somewhere in product and service terms and very few people would bother to read that closely.

In the past, the company has downplayed the privacy concerns about having cameras and microphones in so many houses across the globe. And it has never really spoken about how it trains the AI to work effectively for its millions of users.

It is worth mentioning that the process is known as data annotation and it has now become the base of machine learning revolution, which is responsible for making AI process languages, recognise images and objects and do so much more.

However, AI algorithms only improve when the data that they use is categorized. There are times when Alexa, or other digital assistants, don’t understand the information you are asking for. This can happen because of a number of reasons including the use of a different language or a regional slang. When such cases happen, it is humans who help the AI in understanding what the user needs by listening to the recording and adding the correct label of data. This is called supervised learning. Supervised and semi-supervised learning are two techniques that are used by Apple, Google and Facebook too in similar ways for their own digital assistants.

Coming back to Amazon, Bloomberg has shed light on the fact that thousands of employees of the technology giant are involved in parsing Alexa recordings in order to enhance the performance of the digital assistant. We should mention that the workforce that is involved in this task does not only include full-time workers of the company but some contractors too. While it is not a practice that can be termed as shocking, considering that other technology companies also do it, the report does point out correctly, is that customers often don’t realize this is happening. Furthermore, there is no word on for how long these recordings are stored. So, there is always a risk of the information being stolen or getting misused by a notorious employee of the company.

In a statement, Amazon has said to Bloomberg, “We only annotate an extremely small sample of Alexa voice recordings in order [sic] improve the customer experience. For example, this information helps us train our speech recognition and natural language understanding systems, so Alexa can better understand your requests, and ensure the service works well for everyone.”

Amazon has also added that it has “strict technical and operational safeguards, and have a zero tolerance policy for the abuse of our system.” The company has also said that its employees do not have the access to identify people talking to Alexa and all the personal information of the users is “treated with high confidentiality,” and protected by “multi-factor authentication to restrict access, service encryption, and audits of our control environment.”

However, we should point out that there have been several instances in the past when recordings have been sent to the wrong people by Alexa. And by wrong people, we basically mean other users.

Currently, Amazon is looking for ways to move away from this kind of supervised learning because it requires a lot of transcribing and annotation. According to a report that surfaced in Wired last year, the company us using new techniques in order to cut down on error rates and to expand Alexa’s knowledge base.

In an article called ‘How Alexa Learns’ that was published in Scientific American earlier this month, Ruhi Sarikaya Alexa’s director of applied science said, “In recent AI research, supervised learning has predominated. But today, commercial AI systems generate far more customer interactions than we could begin to label by hand. The only way to continue the torrid rate of improvement that commercial AI has delivered so far is to reorient ourselves toward semi-supervised, weakly supervised, and unsupervised learning. Our systems need to learn how to improve themselves.”

Sony PS4 gets a discount in the Sony’s Summer Promotion, price of its games, controllers and PS VR cut off as well

0

Sony’s gaming console, the Playstation 4 (PS4) is getting a price drop in India from this week onwards. Along with the price cut, the PS4 games, controllers as well as the PlayStation VR (PS VR) will be available at a discounted price, too. This is a part of Sony’s summer promotion, which starts from April 12 and will finish at the end of summer, on June 15.

Currently the PS4 sells for Rs 23,580 for the 500GB Slim variant in India, and on the purchase of the console right now the users will also get some new games bundled with it. Games such as Gram Turismo Sport, Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition are also available when consumers buy the game console during the summer promotion period. Sony is also giving three months of PS Plus in the bonanza that gives the users access to multiplayer and cloud saves too.

Although not officially announced, but the 1TB variant of the PS4 will also be discounted later during the promotion. But it should be noted that the PS4 Pro will not be discounted and it will sell at its original price. Similar to the price drop on consoles, the PS4 games too will sell at a discounted price. Some of the best-selling games such as Spider-Man for PS4 will sell at Rs 2,499 and the God of War will bear a price tag of Rs 1,999 during the promotion. The Sony summer promotion offer will be available on Flipkart, Amazon as well as offline retail game sellers as well.

The gamers who wanted the PS4 Pro’s price to drop might be disappointed as it in all likelihood will not receive any. Currently, the PS4 Pro sells for Rs 38,710 in India with warranty whereas in the grey market, the same console has a price of Rs 34,000 without warranty. But we are hoping the PS4 Pro too might get to see a price cut due to the competitive rates of the consoles. If that happens, the price will drop in the US and the European market first, as they have a huge user base. And if the price of the PS4 drops in the European market then the Indian market will follow.

With the price drop, Sony is gearing up to scale the gaming industry in India. which is at an all-time high. Microsoft’s Xbox doesn’t have as big a user base in the country (when compared to PS4) and the Nintendo doesn’t even have an official presence in India. So, it makes the path clear for Sony and its PS4 to gather all the ground it can cover. And the summer promotion offer might be taking it a step closer to its goal.

Google Assistant will now be able to read your work calendar with G Suite integration

Technology giant Google has today announced that it is rolling out its digital assistant to G Suite. So, if you have a G Suite account, you would soon be able to use Google Assistant with it, and it will start with the Calendar app in the company’s enterprise platform.

The company made this announcement via an official Google Cloud blog post, which also talks about Google‘s Cloud Next conference in San Francisco. In the blog post, the search giant has explained how the integration will work. If you have a G Suite account, you will be able to test the Assistant starting today.

If you are signed in with a G Suite account and have it synced to your Calendar app, you can get your assistant to remind you about your next meeting by telling it when and where it is, set reminders and do so much more. And needless to say, it works exactly like the consumer-facing version of the Google Assistant app does.

We should mention that this will be rolling out for mobile as well as desktop users of Google Assistant. Google Assistant’s integration with G Suite for Calendar app is cross-platform. Going forward, we would find out if it is cross-platform for other services too.

However, it is also worth pointing out that this would not work on a device that has your personal Google Assistant synced on it. This is because it is an enterprise feature and Google has only launched it for G Suite.

Another thing worth pointing out is that as of now, there is no word on the G Suite apps that will work with Google Assistant. However, we expect to get more details on it once the feature exits beta.

Speaking about the feature in its blog post, the technology giant said, “G Suite is integrating with the Google Assistant, specifically with Calendar. Your Google Assistant already helps with your personal life, but now when you sign in and switch to your G Suite account, you can easily use your Assistant to help you prepare for the workday, too. Whether you’re at home, on the go, or in the car, you’ll be able to ask your Assistant to tell you when and where your next meeting is, and stay on top of scheduling changes. This integration is available in beta today.”

Google also added that with the update, “G Suite can help you work more efficiently and spend less time on repetitive, predictable tasks.”

It even holds a rank of one of the top 10 action games in India. The game can be downloaded for Android as well as iPhones from Google Play Store and Apple App Store.

That motivated us to partner with SET to create original, adrenalin pumping, super thrilling mobile CID mobile games that are just as exciting as the shows themselves.”

The question about ‘why’ a CID game has been made, according to the company most millennials have grown up watching the CID show. And now, they have developed a deep connection with their mobile screens and spend more time with their smartphones as compared to TVs. So, the company wished to bring one of the most popular TV shows to the mobile platform. According to the company, the players would enjoy the game as much as they enjoyed watching the show.

Amogh Dusad, Head Content of the Partnership and New Initiatives said, “Sony pictures network is strategically focused on the fast growing online gaming space. Most of our iconic shows and characters lend themselves to great gaming potential. CID game (Daya Darwaza Tod do) is the first of many steps we intend to take in this direction. Apple to break out Music, Podcasts and Video into separate apps for macOS 10.15: Report

Apple’s media management software iTunes, which is far from being a fan favourite, may be closed down soon. According to a new report that has surfaced online, the Cupertino based technology giant is all set to break up the software into separate Music, TV and Podcasts app in the next version of macOS.

The news about this development was broken by Guilherme Rambo at 9to5Mac and Steve Troughton-Smith. Both of them have said that the new apps will be Marzipan applications, much like Apple News app on the Mac. These apps will share an overarching design and codebase with their iOS counterparts that are used on the iPhone and iPad.

It has been reported that the Music app will focus on offering a home for the Apple Music service away from iTunes. The new TV app will be a place for Apple’s upcoming new service, Apple TV Plus. And needless to say, the Podcasts app will get podcasts. The Books app, which is already on macOS, will also be getting a similar Marzipan redesign that will make it more like the updated app that was released by Apple last year, along with iOS 12.

It would be safe to assume that like Book Store, Apple would soon be breaking out the music, TV & movie and podcast portions of the iTunes store into respective apps too. However, as of now, there isn’t too much information available about them being broken into individual apps.

We should add here that the move makes sense on Apple’s part ad iTunes is a very old software, and many of its users are not too fond of it. By breaking it up, Apple would be able to create apps that are not bloated and come with modern designs. And needless to say, a lot of users are really looking forward to this.

With this, the technology giant is looking to push code-base Marzipan apps in a big way on macOS. And to begin with, it has chosen one among the clunkiest apps to show developers how much beneficial it can be. It is also worth mentioning that macOS will be put in line with iOS with this move, as the latter has dedicated apps for various purposes for ages now.

However, iTunes is not dying so soon. The app will stick around for a while as it is the only way to sync and interact with iPod and other iOS devices.

Don’t like your PSN name? PlayStation now lets you change it

0

There’s some good news for PlayStation users who don’t like their PSN name. Starting today, Japanese electronics maker Sony will now let users change their PSN names. The feature initially launched in beta in October last year, and now, the company has made it available to all. If you don’t like your PSN name, you will be able to change your name via your PS console or through a browser.

However, make sure that you don’t do it often. The first time you change your username, it will be free. But then, it will cost you $9.99 each time. For PlayStation subscribers, it will be more affordable than it will be for others. They would have to pay $4.99 each time after the first.

But then, there’s one good thing too. If you want to go back to a PSN name that you used earlier, you will be able to do it for free. In order to keep it simple for your friends to recognise you with your new PSN name, PlayStation also has an option to display your old name next to the new one for 30 days.

It is worth adding that most games on PlayStation 4 that have been released on either April 1, 2018, or after that should work perfectly well with your new PSN name. This is because it was only then that developers started using tools that enabled a user to change his name at the system level. Sony has said that a “large majority of the most actively played PS4 games” will work fine. However, this does not guarantee any support for it.

Sony has also published a list of a number of games that will experience no issues, games with known issues and those who have critical issues. In case there are issues in the game, problems can range from minor oddities like your previous PSN name popping up time and again, to some extreme ones.

We should add here that exclusive games like God of War and Spider-Man make the date cut-off. However, a number of them that were released before April 1, 2018, are a part of the ‘games with issues identifies’ list. Games that do have issues include Bloodborne, Grand Theft Auto V, Warframe, Uncharted 4 among others.

The Japanese electronics maker has also said that in case a user is facing issues, reverting back to your old PSN name should resolve most of them. However, there is no guarantee for this as well. With so many warnings and disclaimers, we would completely think it through before we change our PSN name.

Uber Vouchers service launched in India, aimed at businesses

0

Cab hailing company Uber has today introduced Uber Vouchers in India that are designed for businesses so that they can make their customers’ lives by sponsoring transportation for them. In short, it means that now companies can book Uber to serve as their transportation platform if they wish to help their customers move from one place to other.

Commenting on the launch, Ronnie Gurion, General Manager and Global Head of Uber for Business said, “With the international launch of this feature, Uber’s goal is to unlock an additional growth lever for businesses by creating an innovative way to bring customers to their door or wherever they need to go. As companies look for new technology and novel ways to engage with consumers, Vouchers provide a perk that businesses know their customers will use.”

The Uber Vouchers is developed on the Uber for Business (U4B) platform and has already been tested in more than 100 partners on a global scale. The Uber Vouchers will now be available globally in most countries where Uber operates, which includes India as well.

How Uber Business works:

Businesses in India can sign up for Uber Vouchers by visiting the uber.com/vouchers. Once they sign up, the U4B’s Guest Services team will be made available to support the businesses as they use and integrate the Vouchers.

Getting started with Uber Business is pretty simple, as businesses can use the Uber Vouchers to offer discounted Uber trips to one or many of their customers. The Businesses can also create customized voucher campaigns and programs with parameters, budget, specified pick-up and drop-off locations as well as a set time for an offer. With Business Vouchers, Uber has given the business owners the ability to tailor their own events, promote their services using a web dashboard and U4B’s Guest Services team will be available to support businesses.

Once a Voucher program is created by the business, they can send the Vouchers to their customers by choosing any distribution method – via email, social media, mobile messaging, etc. The companies who will offer the vouchers will only pay for the rides redeemed under the Voucher campaign along with any applicable administrative fees.

When a rider receives a Voucher and clicks to redeem the link, it is automatically added to their Uber app. The Voucher will remain in the app until it expires. The customers who receive these Vouchers can also apply it directly to their existing Uber account. If they don’t have an Uber account then they will be promoted to download the app to redeem the discounted trip via the Voucher.

The businesses can see how many of their generated Vouchers have been redeemed or used within a dedicated dashboard. The data can also be exported to streamline reporting and billing.

According to Uber, the Uber Voucher feature can be used by businesses such as retailers, restaurants or offices who have to move customers, employees or themselves from one place to other frequently. It can also be used by the hospitality sector or in the insurance space. The feature delivers a real-time solution to the consumers to provide them with additional choice and flexibility in their transportation, while also reducing operational processes and costs for their business.

Fortnite update 8.30 brings Respawn Vans and Respawn Cards

0

Epic Games’ popular battleroyale game Fortnite has rolled out a new update that holds the version number 8.30 and it will be released on April 10 after 5am ET (2:30pm IST). The new update was a much awaited one because it brings a new feature from the game’s rival Apex Legends – Reboot Bus. The Reboot Bus/Respawn Vans allows the players to revive their ‘dead’ squad mates. Earlier this feature was not available in Fortnite and it made its debut in the Apex Legends.

The Reboot Van is the new feature being introduced in the new update of Fortnite. According to a video from Epic Games, with the addition of Reboot Vans, the players of the game will be able to revive or bring their dead teammates back to life just like Apex Legends’ respawn beacon. For this, the players would need to pick the Reboot Cards which will be on the bodies of the dead/downed teammates or at the place where they died. The players can then pick those cards and activate them at the Respawn Vans which would bring the dead teammate back to life.

Once the Respawn Vans are activated, there will be a visual and audio cue which will let the players nearby know that someone is trying to revive his teammate. It will also make visible the number of players who are being revived.

But it should be noted that the Reboot Vans can bring only one player of a team at one time. It is worth mentioning that the Respawn Vans have cooldown time once they are activated. So, if the players have the Reboot Cards of more than one teammate, then he would need to take turns reviving them. But it will also take time and will make the player who is reviving his teammates vulnerable. So, they need to watch their back, and it will probably better to get all the teammates gather around the Respawn Van and protect each other.

Also, the creators of Fortnite said that the size of update will be increasing due to “technical improvements”. The Android players of the game will have to download the update which will have a file size between 1.56GB to 2.98GB while iOS players’ update file will be between 1.14GB and 1.76GB.

The new update 8.30 of Fortnite will be available for all the gaming consoles and platforms the game runs on and their download sizes will be different as well. The update of Fortnite can be downloaded from the official Fortnite website or they can follow the update notification. Epic Games also said that the mobile players of Fortnite with less than 6GB of space would need to re-download the game.

Given below is the download sizes of the platforms:

Fortnite download size for update 8.30

  • PC: 6.93GB
  • Mac: 7.7GB
  • PS4: 3.9GB
  • Xbox: 4.06GB
  • Nintendo Switch: 3.93GB
  • iOS: 1.14 – 1.76GB
  • Android: 1.56 – 2.98GB

0

Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus will soon be seen launching the OnePlus 7 handset, and prior to its launch, some details of the upcoming device have been leaked. Or rather, we should say that it is the latest leak about OnePlus 7, since details about the smartphone have been circulating online since months now. The recent leaks reveal that there will be multiple variants of the upcoming OnePlus 7. In addition to this, OnePlus 7 Pro was spotted on the Chinese social networking platform, Weibo which revealed its design, details and specifications. The OnePlus 7 Pro was also spotted on the Bluetooth certification site which further confirms that the device will be launched soon.

OnePlus 7 Pro’s images had been leaked on Weibo which shows that the device will sport a dual edged display that is very similar to the one we saw on Samsung Galaxy S10+. The images further revealed that the OnePlus 7 will have a notch-less and hole-less display similar to the new Oppo or Vivo smartphones, ehich further indicates that the device will pack a pop-up selfie camera. There is also an ‘About Phone’ image leaked alongside the leaked photos that reveals some specifications of the OnePlus 7.

According to the leaked image, the OnePlus 7 Pro sports a 6.67-inch Super Optic display and is powered by a Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with 8GB RAM and 256GB of internal storage. There is also a mention of a triple rear camera setup in the leaked image, which is said to comprise of a 48MP primary sensor, a 16MP sensor and an 8MP sensor. Although the triple rear camera setup is mentioned but the back side of the device has not been revealed in the leaked image. Furthermore, the device seems to run on Android Pie.

Furthermore, the tipster Ishan Agarwal tweeted that the upcoming OnePlus 7 will come in three variants – the OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, and the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. The model numbers for the three device variants will be GM1901, GM1903, and GM1905 for the OnePlus 7, GM1911, GM1913, GM1915, and GM1917 for the OnePlus 7 Pro, and GM1920 for the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G. It should be noted that this is an expected tip so the news should be taken with a pinch of salt as the company hasn’t mentioned anything about the multiple variants of the OnePlus 7.

But is should be noted that the leaked Weibo image shows that the OnePlus 7 has a model number GM1915. Also, the OnePlus 7 with the same model number was spotted on the Bluetooth SIG certification site which further confirms and proves that the leaks might hold more weight than thought.

Google Pixelbook group to launch new laptops and tablets in future: Here are all the details

A recent report suggested that technology giant Google may have plans of shifting its employees out of the laptop and tablet division that developed the premium Pixelbooks and Pixel Slate because of ‘roadmap cutbacks’. However, when the report surfaced online last month, Google neither confirmed nor denied it.

But now, the search giant has said that its hardware division is working on new tablets and laptops that may be launched soon. While the previous report emerged on Business Insider, Google gave the recent confirmation to The Verge.

However, even now, Google has not spoken about the details and timing of the launch of the upcoming tablets and laptops. But that doesn’t mean it has not even dropped a hint. According to a report in 9to5Google, Google led a session at its Cloud Nex 2019 conference which was called ‘Introducing Google Hardware for Business.’ At the session, Google suggested that it is working on a new device that will help on-the-go employees in ways that the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate can’t.

Speaking on this, Google’s Pixelbook Group product management lead Steve Jacobs said, “We think there’s some unique things we can do differently than the Pixelbook and Pixel Slate that are going to really help give them what they’re looking for when they’re working in this new modern cloud-first era.”

We should point out that if you go to Jacob’s LinkedIn profile, you will see that he leads three different categories within Google’s Core Technology group – Pixelbook, Pixel Slate and ‘Emerging’. As of now, there is no word on what ‘Emerging’ means, however, Jacob’s speaker profile for Cloud Next says that the focus of the Core Technology group is to look “for new and innovative ways to advance the way we work and play on personal computers.” So, we can assume that it’s another of a personal computer.

It is worth mentioning that although “Google Hardware for Business” is also a new name, it is not a brand new initiative and it seems like it is a part of the company’s prior Chrome Enterprise push.

The technology giant is also said to be quietly working on a new operating system named Fuchsia, that may replace both Android and Chrome OS in the future. However, Google has always maintained that Fuchsia is just an experimental project that it is working on.

The company will be hosting its Google I/O developer conference in May this year, and it will be unveiled its Android Q operating system at the event.
