OnePlus’ 5G prototype smartphone to be showcased at Mobile World Congress 2019

Chinese smartphone brand OnePlus has announced that it will be showcasing its first OnePlus 5G prototype smartphone at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2019. As expected, the 5G device by OnePlus will be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor. By now, we all know that 5G connectivity is going to be one among the most highlighted new technologies that will be seen this year and OnePlus will be one among the first few smartphone manufacturers to showcase its 5G-enabled smartphone. At MWC 2019, the company is letting attendees experience 5G cloud gaming on the new 5G prototype device, which will be up for display at Qualcomm Technologies’ booth. We should mention that OnePlus collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies on 5G development since 2017 and it has taken several important steps to get a smartphone ready for 5G commercialization in 2019. And as we mentioned earlier, the Chinese smartphone brand is among the first companies to launch a smartphone with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, which is promised to provide enhanced imaging, gaming, and intelligence.
In a statement released to the tech press, OnePlus said, “Pete Lau made the world’s first 5G tweet by connecting a prototype device to a 5G Non-standalone Network, via an LTE b7 + 5G NR n78 air interface. By Never Settling, OnePlus is constantly challenging itself to deliver the best and only the best. That’s why 5G is of great strategic importance to OnePlus.” OnePlus 5G MWC 2019 We should mention that at Qualcomm Snapdragon Tech Summit 2018, that was held in December last year in Hawaii, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had said that the company will be launching a 5G smartphone in 2019. He also said that the smartphone will be using Qualcomm’s latest flagship processor – Snapdragon 855 SoC and Snapdragon X50 5G modem. It was also revealed later that the 5G smartphone by the company will not be a part of its regular flagship lineup, but instead will be launched in a separate range altogether. The reason behind this is that OnePlus’ 5G smartphone will be costlier than the devices launched in its regular flagship lineup, and the company doesn’t want to let go of its primary objective of offering flagship features at an affordable price.

Android Q might go completely ‘button-less’; here’s how

0
Google will soon be taking wraps off its Android Q operating system at its developer conference that is scheduled for May this year. However, various leaks and reports about the upcoming operating system’s features have surfaced online. According to reports, there will be new gesture controls coming with Android Q along with a system wide dark mode. With the upcoming Android Q, we might lose one or all of the three major buttons from Android – the back button. In the testing phase of Android Q, Google is testing to replace the back button with a gesture. The technology giant is also planning to improve the fluidity of the last app transition so that it works more smoothly than before. We already saw some new gesture features in Google’s Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL where the users saw the pill at the bottom of the screen that acted on gestures. Like when we swipe the pill up from the home screen, all apps menu opens up. But now with the upcoming iteration of Android, the users can swipe the pill left to go back.
The swipe left feature is not limited to home screen but also to all the apps functions of the phone. It might also be possible that Google might go the Apple iOS way and remove all the three buttons Android has, and go completely ‘one-buttoned’ like Apple. If Android decides to go that way then it will have to make new gesture controls for the apps and the buttons and revamp the Android OS completely.

Some of the gestures we might see in Android Q are:

  1. Long press pill to launch Google Assistant
  2. Tap pill to go to Home
  3. Short swipe the pill to left to open horizontal recent app
  4. Long swipe the pill to open the App drawer
  5. Slide pill to the left to go Back
  6. Quick slide the pill to right to Open last app
  7. Slide the pill to right to Scroll through recent app
In the upcoming Google I/O 2019 we might get to see more of the gesture controls of Android Q. Android loyalists might not like the idea of removing the three keys of Android but it might be the next stage in the development and evolution for the operating system. Some smartphone companies are also coming up with their own gesture controls for their own OS and they too might get added to Android Q. While some may love to see the back button getting replaced with a gesture, some may take a while to get used to it. Xiaomi is working on a smartphone with pop-up selfie camera

Chinese smartphone brand Vivo is all set to launch its V15 Pro smartphone in India today that is touted to come with a pop-up selfie camera, a technology that we first saw in the company’s NEX smartphone. Soon, the technology will soon be seen in Oppo’s upcoming smartphone too. Considering that Oppo and Vivo have the same parent company – BBK Electronics. And now, a report has surfaced on Chinese website ITHome that claims that Xiaomi is working on a smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera. According to the report, Xiaomi’s product director Wang Teng has said that the company may launch a smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera in future. However, this is not likely to happen anytime soon as Wang said to the publication that the design has not caught up consumers yet. And Xiaomi is still taking this into consideration before it launches its smartphone with pop-up selfie camera. While pop-up cameras definitely manage to eliminate the notch, some feel that they aren’t the most effective way to do so.
Furthermore, a number of issues have to be dealt with before Xiaomi unveils its smartphone with pop-up selfie camera, such as the durability of the elevating camera in the long run, according to Wang. This may also explain why the feature is limited to a few smartphones in Vivo and Oppo too. Vivo V15 Pro, the Chinese smartphone brand’s second smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera, will come with a 32P sensor in the front and unlike the company’s NEX smartphone, the device will support face unlock feature. Speaking of Xiaomi, it is also all set to launch its Mi 9 smartphone on February 20 at an event in Beijing. After that, it will also be hosting an event at the Mobile World Congress 2019 that is set to begin on February 25. Xiaomi has already confirmed that its Mi 9 smartphone will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor and come with a triple camera setup on its back panel. Xiaomi won’t just be launching the vanilla variant of its Mi 9 smartphone, but it has also teased a special edition of its next flagship device that will come with a transparent back panel and house 12GB of RAM.

Instagram is testing a donation feature called Fundraiser

Popular photo-sharing app Instagram keeps on getting new features that make it more relevant for users. Facebook has been focussing a lot on the app since the time its popularity went up with a majority of users of the social media platform. According to a report in TechCrunch, Facebook has added another commercial feature on its photo-sharing app. Instagram is said to be testing a new Fundraiser feature that would enable users to raise money for various non-profit organisations via the Stories feature. TechCrunch has credited these findings to Jane Manchun Wong, who discovered code and images within the Instagram app that hint that the platform will soon have support for Fundraise. Eventually, users will also have an option for searching for a non-profit and add it to their Story. And other users will be able to make donations via that person’s Instagram Story.
Instagram has also said in a statement that it is testing this feature and said that is expected to roll it out to everyone “later this year.” The photo-sharing app said, “We are in early stages and working hard to bring this experience to our community. Instagram is all about bringing you closer to the people and things you love, and a big part of that is showing support for and bringing awareness to meaningful communities and causes. Later this year, people will be able to raise money and help support non-profits that are important to them through a donation sticker in Instagram Stories. We’re excited to bring this experience to our community and will share more updates in the coming months.” We should mention that this feature is very similar to Facebook’s Donate functionality which, according to the company has helped raise $1 billion for various non-profits. However, as TechCrunch pointed out, such donation features require users to enter their credit card details. This means that by adding the Fundraiser feature to Instagram, the social networking platform will be getting access to millions of credit card numbers. Would you be comfortable with this given that Facebook has a not-so-good-history with data? Let us know in the comments below!

Apex Legends to get new Legends and Survival Mode

0
Apex Legends, a new online battle royale game developed by Electronic Arts (EA) and Respawn Entertainment, is getting more popular with time. Last week, it had reported more than 25 million online players just after three weeks of being launched. Also, the game had garnered a total of 10 million players within three days of being unveiled. The players of the game have now started comparing it with the current top games of the genre – PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. According to a recent report, Apex Legends will soon get a new mode called Survival Mode that will bring new characters and some other new elements to the game. The references of the mode, new characters, and some fresh cosmetic content were first found by dataminers going through Apex Legends files. This information was then leaked by a Twitter profile called @RealApexLeaks. However, there is also a possibility that the game files might be referring to something entirely different and the said changes may not even get in the game. It has also been reported that the survival game mode will also have spectators and commentators who can see the players playing the game. The spectators can also cheer, comment and perform emotes of their own for the players they are watching. This game mode has previously been seen in other FPS games like Call of Duty, Battlefield and Titanfall. There is also a new feature where the players will be able to see how they were killed in the last round. This feature is already seen in other First-Person Shooter (FPS) and battle royale games and has also been added in PUBG.
The creators of Apex Legends have already said in the past that the game will be getting new updates and other new features in the future. Right now, there is only the squad mode in the game where the players could play only in squad of three. But the creators have also promised to give the players a duo and solo mode as well just like the other battle-royale is offering. With this the players can go solo and play in duo mode as well. But this is not a conceptual idea of the company, as the company has planned to put this zoom technology in their smartphones starting this year itself. This means we can expect to see Oppo smartphone cameras with much better zoom and enhanced photography capabilities. According to Chinese news website Anzhuo, Oppo’s vice president, Shen Yiren, has confirmed the news on Weibo that the company will be putting the 10x hybrid optical zoom in their 2019 launching smartphones. The report also said that the optical zoom could be used through a telephoto lens, through the main camera lens or through the super-wide angle lens. The effective zoom will range between 15.9mm to 159mm. Back in MWC 2017, Oppo unveiled its hybrid optical zoom which was able to achieve 5x optical zoom using a periscope-style camera. But the company never announced the launch of this feature and there was no mass production, so it wasn’t put in phones.
The 5x optical zoom of Oppo worked using a telephoto lens where the light was diverted through a prism. The lens was placed at a 90-degree angle so the width of the photo was not sacrificed. Ahead of the MWC 2019’s main event, Oppo is holding an event on February 23 and we expect the company to announce 10x hybrid optical zoom there. In this upgraded hybrid optical zoom, we will get to see double the power of the earlier optical zoom of Oppo. In the smartphone world where the cameras are getting beefed up and more and more cameras are put on smartphones, the feature will be a breakthrough. Aadhaar details of nearly 6.7 million people exposed by Indane, claims security researcher

A French security researcher has claimed that he has found a lapse that has allegedly exposed millions of Aadhaar numbers of dealers and distributors who are associated with Indane, which is an Indian Oil Corporation-owned LPG brand. The researcher, named Baptiste Robert, can be found online as Elliot Alderson has also exposed Aadhaar-related leaks in the past. On Monday, he wrote in a blog post on Medium that data of Indane’s 6.7 million dealers and distributors, which is accessible only with a valid username and a password, has been left exposed. According to Alderson, “Due to a lack of authentication in the local dealers portal, Indane is leaking the names, addresses and the Aadhaar numbers of their customers.”
Alderson could find the customer data of almost 11,000 dealers and this included the names and addresses of customers. He got this information using a custom-built script that was made to scrape the database, however, before he could find out more, his IP was blocked by Indane. He also said in his blog post, “I wrote the python script. By running this script, it gives us 11062 valid dealer ids. After more than 1 day, my script tested 9,490 dealers and found that a total of 5,826,116 Indane customers are affected by this leak.” The French researchers could find a total of 5.8 million records of Indane customers before his script was blocked. He further added, “Unfortunately, Indane probably blocked my IP, so I didn’t test the remaining 1,572 dealers. By doing some basic math we can estimate the final number of affected customers around 6,791,200.” Indane and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) have not as yet commented about the data breach. We should point out that according to Wikipedia, Indane serves more than 90 million families through a network of 9100 distributors.  The website also states that 27% of Indane’s customer base resides in semi-urban or rural markets and every second LPG cooking gas connection in India is by the company. It is also worth mentioning that Indane also operates via its Android app that can be downloaded via the Google Play Store.

Vivo iQoo phone teased to sport triple rear cameras, come with Snapdragon 855 SoC

Just days after Vivo officially announced its sub-brand iQoo in China, the first smartphone from the range has been teased. The smartphone can be seen to have a glossy back panel that has a gradient finish and it also sports a triple rear camera setup. It is worth noticing that the upcoming smartphone from iQoo does not sport a traditional fingerprint scanner on its back panel. Instead, it has been confirmed to sport a sixth-generation in-display fingerprint sensor and will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. The new sub-brand by Vivo – iQoo – is likely to only produce the high-end models from the smartphone brand. Reports also suggest that Vivo may launch a foldable phone under its iQoo sub-brand which will rival foldables from Samsung, Huawei, Xiaomi, and Motorola. The Chinese smartphone brand has also posted images on its Weibo account showing the iQoo-branded smartphone getting teased at the 2019 NBA All-Star Weekend. We should mention that the front panel of the smartphone is not visible in the teaser, but the back panel can be seen. In the teaser, a triple rear camera setup can be seen very clearly and it can also be figured out that the lenses are vertically stacked. As we mentioned earlier, the back panel of the smartphone comes with a gradient and glossy finish.
We should also point out that besides the triple rear camera setup, even the iQoo logo on the back panel is placed vertically, which hints that the smartphone will come with photography-centric features. However, unlike what a recent report claimed, the device will not be a foldable phone. Apart from sharing these pictures in the post on Weibo, Vivo also mentioned that the new smartphone by iQoo will sport a sixth-generation in-display fingerprint sensor. It is worth noticing that this is an upgrade over the fifth-generation on-screen fingerprint scanner that the company used on the Vivo NEX Dual Display Edition smartphone. The new sensor is speculated to recognise fingerprints not just on one point on the display, but from the entire bottom area of the display panel.

It has also been speculated that the device will bear a price tag of CNY 5,000, which becomes approximately Rs 52,700. However, considering that this is just a speculation, we suggest that you should take it with a pinch of salt until the company confirms this news.

Apple 16-inch MacBook Pro and 32-inch 6K monitor will be released this year

This year, Apple is about to launch an ‘all-new’ MacBook Pro design. This product is reportedly a model with a screen size between 16 and 16.5-inches. Thus, after the 17-inch MacBook models that were stopped selling in 2012, this model will have the largest screen when it comes to Apple MacBooks. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst who is well connected with Apple said, that the lineup may also include a 13-inch model with 32GB RAM support. No model other than the 15-inch MacBook Pro can be configured with that amount of memory, till now. Considering that Apple released the first Touch Bar models in late 2016, the all-new design will be sought after. The earlier design hasn’t been very popular with the keyboard getting the maximum criticism, which was owed both to its feel and unreliability. It might be difficult to get a solution to this quickly because Apple has tweaked the keyboard on each subsequent spec bump. According to Kuo, the Mac Pro will be launching this year itself with, in his words, “easy to upgrade components”.
Also, Kuo has first credible details of the external monitor, which indicates that Apple will return to the pro display market. This device is reportedly said to be a 31.6-inch 6K display with a Mini LED-like backlight design. To recall, Apple discontinued its last monitor, the Thunderbolt Display way back in 2016. Therefore, presently, users can only resort to Apple-sanctioned, but imperfect 27-inch LG UltraFine 5K and couple of other Dell monitors. For iPhone geeks, we must tell you that the models which will launch this year are expected to feature the same design and screen sizes as the 2018 iPhone XS and iPhone XR. This means that we will again be able to see three smartphones, which will sport 6.5-inch, 5.8-inch and 6.1-inch display sizes. Confirmed: Samsung is not holding any Galaxy S10 preview event on February 21 in India

Yesterday, rumours were rife that Samsung plans to hold preview events in eight Indian cities right after it unveils its flagship smartphone in San Francisco. Some technology news websites claimed that at the event, potential customers and Samsung fans could go and get a hands-on experience of the Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10E smartphones. However, we confirmed with Samsung and the South Korean technology giant has confirmed that it is not holding any such event in India on February 21 or at any later date for its upcoming flagship smartphones. Samsung is all set to launch the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10E smartphones at its Unpacked event in San Francisco on February 20. The company is also said to launch its Galaxy Watch Active smartwatch and its Galaxy Buds at the same event.
The South Korean technology giant has also hinted that its much-anticipated foldable phone, Galaxy F, will also make an appearance at its Unpacked event. The company first showed off its foldable phone at its developer conference in November last year and then showed it to a select audience at the Consumer Electronics Show that was held in Las Vegas last month. We should mention that the company has been extremely secretive about its foldable phone in particular. Even when it gave the world a first look at the device at its developer conference, it first dimmed the lights on the stage to make sure people only get to see what the company wanted to showcase. Speaking of its tenth anniversary special Galaxy S10 lineup, the company is adding a number of high-end features to the smartphones to make sure they manage to make a mark in the premium segment. The smartphones will come with an Infinity-O display, just like the one we saw on Samsung Galaxy A8s. In this kind of display, the selfie camera of the smartphone is housed in a small hole that it is present on the screen itself. It is worth noticing that since Samsung Galaxy S10+, the most high-end variant of the three devices, comes with a dual selfie camera setup, it would have a capsule-shaped hole on its display. Other than this, 30% of the screen of Samsung Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10+ will have fingerprint sensing technology, which means that if you place your finger anywhere on that portion of the display, the smartphones will unlock. Samsung Galaxy S10E, on the other hand, will come with a fingerprint sensor on its right edge. There are a number of reports that have been circulating about the upcoming devices. We would finally get to know tomorrow which ones among the reported features actually made it to the smartphones. You can tune in here to watch the event getting live-streamed 12:30 am IST on February 21.
