Our Take

In terms of specifications, both phones are nearly identical. The only difference between the two phones is the processors, selfie cameras, and refresh rate. The 4G model has a 90Hz display, whereas the 5G model only has a 60Hz display. The Oppo F21 Pro has a 32-megapixel selfie camera, while the F21 Pro 5G has a 16-megapixel front-facing camera. The Oppo F21 Pro is Rs 22,999, while the Oppo F21 Pro 5G is Rs 26,999. This implies a Rs 4,000 price difference between the two smartphones. There are no significant differences between the two phones; the real question is whether now is the right time to purchase a 5G smartphone. You still have to decide whether to spend more money now on a 5G smartphone in the hopes that connectivity will be available soon, or opt for a feature-packed smartphone with 4G support. The point we’re trying to make here is that 5G phone prices have plummeted by nearly half in the last year. There’s also no harm in purchasing a 5G smartphone, but once 5G is available in India, prices are expected to drop, giving you more and better options to choose from. As a result, we recommend the Oppo F21 Pro. Alert! Alert! Hackers in China are using the VLC media player to launch malware attacks

According to the latest cybersecurity report VLC media player is being used by Chinese hackers to launch malware attacks on users. In a wide-ranging and sustained campaign, the hacking group Cicada is using VLC to hack Windows systems, targeting government organisations as well as NGOs as victims. Symantec’s cybersecurity experts state, “A Chinese state-backed advanced persistent threat (APT) group is attacking organisations around the globe in a likely espionage campaign that has been ongoing for several months.” The VLC media player is open source and does not require payment. It can play all types of media files. As a result, the hacking group is profiting from its fame. Cicada aka APT10 is a state-sponsored Chinese group that is launching malware for spying on the government, legal, religious, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in multiple countries around the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. It’s intriguing that Cicada’s initial activity centred on Japanese-linked companies several years ago, but it has since been linked to attacks on managed service providers (MSPs) with a more global footprint. The Symantec cybersecurity experts say, the presence of a custom loader and custom malware believed to be used exclusively by the APT group on victim networks led to the attribution of this activity to Cicada. The initial activity on victim networks is seen on Microsoft Exchange Servers in several cases, suggesting that a known, unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange may have been exploited in some cases to gain access to victim networks. It has also been seen that the attackers use a variety of tools, including a custom loader and the Sodamaster backdoor, once they have successfully gained access to the victim machines. The loader used in this campaign was previously used in a Cicada attack. Moreover, Sodamaster is a well-known Cicada tool that this group is thought to use exclusively. It’s a fileless malware that can evade detection in a sandbox by looking for a registry key or delaying execution; enumerating the username, hostname, and operating system of targets; searching for running processes, and downloading and executing additional payloads. It can also obfuscate and encrypt traffic before sending it back to its command-and-control (C&C) server. Cicada has been using this powerful backdoor since at least 2020. Using a custom Mimikatz loader, the attackers have also been seen dumping credentials. This version of Mimikatz includes mimilib.dll, which collects credentials in plain text for any user accessing the compromised host and maintains them across reboots. The attackers also use the legitimate VLC Media Player to launch a custom loader via the VLC Exports function, as well as the WinVNC tool to remotely control victims’ computers. Government-related institutions or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) appear to be the primary targets of this campaign, with some of these NGOs working in the fields of education and religion. In addition, there were victims in the telecommunications, legal, and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to this, the victims are from a variety of countries, including the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Turkey, Israel, India, Montenegro, and Italy. There is also only one victim in Japan, which is noteworthy given Cicada’s previous focus on Japanese-linked businesses. Auto-saving of private images in WhatsApp’s Disappearing mode will no longer be possible

WhatsApp appears to have finally patched up a major flaw in its Disappearing mode feature, which allowed users to save media files automatically. WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that prevents media from being automatically saved to the device’s gallery or Camera Roll.  After the fix when disappearing messages are enabled in a chat users will only be able to save sent media manually. Meanwhile, WhatsApp has also been spotted releasing new drawing tools to some people on WhatsApp beta for iOS. According to the latest report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is working on a feature that will allow users to prevent certain disappearing messages from expiring in a future update, the company is now rolling out changes to the way media from disappearing chats is automatically saved on your device to all users on the latest beta and public builds of WhatsApp for Android and iOS.

As shown in this screenshot, WhatsApp for Android is now automatically turning off the option “media visibility” for disappearing chats, which allows users to view media in their phone’s gallery. This is to provide a better privacy experience when using disappearing messages and to keep media in disappearing chat threads more private.  In addition, WhatsApp for iOS is implementing the same change, with the option “Save to Camera Roll” for disappearing chats being automatically disabled. So if the general setting is enabled, images, videos, and GIFs are never automatically saved in your camera roll. It’s worth noting that the users can still save media manually in disappearing chats: some Android users already have the option to do so. You can save media in WhatsApp for iOS as you normally would. The changes are being rolled out to all beta and public build users and should be visible within 24 hours. The instant messaging app has also been working on the new image editing tools, including the two new pencil tools for annotating or marking up images before sending them on chats. The features are available through a new update via the TestFlight beta programme. On WhatsApp beta for iOS, some users have access to new drawing tools.

The blur tool was already available on WhatsApp for iOS, so the drawing editor’s interface when using these new drawing tools is brand new. Some beta testers who have installed the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS updates, in particular, the WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.8.0.73 update, are now seeing the changes. The blur tool will be moved from its usual location (the colour bar) to the bottom of the screen, along with two new pencils, as shown in the screenshot.  According to the report some beta testers have access to the new drawing editor interface, and more activations are planned in the future. Some users have already received this feature on WhatsApp beta for Android, and a new changelog will be available once more users have received it. Redmi Note 11 Review: A decent phone for multimedia use on a budget

The Redmi Note 11 was recently released in India, and we got our hands on it. The phone starts at Rs 13,999 for the base model and goes up to Rs 15,999 for the most expensive variant. For that money, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck, as it includes numerous upgrades over last year’s wildly popular Redmi Note 10. In this full review of the Redmi Note 11, we’ll see if it’s a compelling phone in its class.

Redmi Note 11 Review: Design and Display

The phone is the first thing you see when you open the relatively large box. Although we have it in Horizon Blue, the black and white colour variant also look quite nice. So, we’ve been using the phone for a few days now, and the design and build quality are the first things that have impressed us. Because it is not overly bulky and weighs around 180 grams, the device feels quite light when held.  review of Redmi Note 11 With a minimalistic design, the phone appears to be quite durable. The matte finish does a good job of keeping fingerprints and smudges at bay. Unlike the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G (Review), which has a two-step design, the camera module seamlessly houses all four sensors. Because the phone is entirely made up of plastic, including the side frames. Our recommendation, you should use the silicon case that comes with it to avoid any mishaps. review of Redmi Note 11 The volume keys and a power button with a fingerprint sensor (embedded within) are located on the right frame. The scanner is both fast and dependable. It has a SIM tray on the left that can hold two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on top, as well as an IR blaster and speaker grill, as you can see. A USB Type-C port, as well as a speaker grill, are located at the phone’s bottom. review of Redmi Note 11 On the front of the Redmi Note 11, Xiaomi has included a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1,080×2,400 pixels. It has a 20:9 aspect ratio and a refresh rate of up to 90Hz. Outdoor visibility is not an issue because the colours pop well and the display can get quite bright. Unlike the Redmi Note 10 from last year, Xiaomi has included a much improved 90Hz panel on this one, which is a significant improvement over the standard 60Hz panel.  Redmi Note 11 Review in India As a result, having a higher refresh rate panel improves the overall smartphone experience by making scrolling through the UI and social media feeds much more fluid. In addition, Gorilla Glass 3 is used to protect the screen, which is welcomed in this price bracket.

Redmi Note 11 Review: Performance and Cameras

A 6nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC and up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM are found under the hood. The phone has a built-in storage capacity of up to 128GB, which can be expanded to 1TB using a microSD card. The chipset is an upgrade over the Snapdragon 678 from last year.  The new 680 SoC is faster than the 678, but it is still not as fast as the Snapdragon 732G processor. However, the 680 uses less energy than its predecessor. The Redmi Note 11 is capable of handling everyday tasks with ease. While browsing the internet, watching videos, using social media, and playing games, performance did not stutter. When it comes to gaming, the Redmi Note 11 can run games like COD, BGMI, and Asphalt 9. We played Asphalt 9 on high settings, but the graphics appeared to be a little off. While the COD gameplay remained stable, the device did not become warm over time. Redmi Note 11 Review in India Furthermore, the smartphone comes preloaded with MIUI 13 based on Android 11. Although the mobile device comes with bloatware, most of the apps can be uninstalled with ease. We didn’t notice any micro stutters or lags because the user interface is well-designed. The phone is responsive and smooth thanks to the presence of a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz dot sampling rate.  In fact, the RAM management is excellent, and the apps do not consume a lot of memory in the background. With MIUI 13, the dark mode optimization has been improved. When it comes to cameras, the Redmi Note 11 has a quad-camera setup with a 50-megapixel main sensor and an f/1.8 aperture on the back. The rear camera setup also consists of an 8-megapixel secondary sensor with an ultra-wide lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. A 13-megapixel selfie camera sensor with an f/2.4 aperture is included for selfies, too. Redmi Note 11 Review: Performance and Cameras The Redmi Note 11 has a native resolution of 12.5-megapixels, which is achieved by combining four pixels. So, when the lighting is good, the image quality from the main sensor is great. It manages to produce good images in bright ambient lighting. The colour, contrast, and sharpness appear to be adequate. However, it struggles to take good photos in low light. The photos taken in low light lacked detail and appears to be noisy. The device does, however, have a night mode, but it appears to be not doing too much. Best is to use the flash at night time for optimum results.

Similarly, the 8MP ultrawide sensor fails to capture images that are sharp and detailed. We noticed a pink tint in the images when switching from primary to the ultra-wide sensor, which could be a software thing that Xiaomi can take care of in the next update. The portrait shots appeared to be satisfactory. The edge detection is also accurate. Moving on to the front camera, the selfies are okay. The skin tone appears slightly pale for our liking, resulting in a lack of sharpness and detail. Redmi Note 11 Review: Performance and Cameras

Wide/ultrawide
In terms of videography, Redmi has dropped support for 4K recording. In fact, the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G lacks 4K resolution, which is surprising given that the previous generation of Redmi Note series supported 4K video recording. This is significant due to the chipset, as the Snapdragon 680 is limited to FHD recordings. In addition, videos lack stabilisation, making them wobbly and lacking in detail. The front camera’s videos tell a similar story. So, overall the cameras left us with a mixed bag of feelings.

With the 33W charging brick that comes included in the box, charging is also a breeze. It takes about an hour to charge the phone from zero to 100 percent. The battery lasts for a really long time and is good for your day to day use.

Our Take

So, is the Redmi Note 11 a good buy? The device is aimed at casual users who want a device with a good design, decent display and long battery life in a budget. If you fall in any of those categories go for it without a doubt. You will get good imagery from the primary sensor and you can do a bit of everyday gaming on this handset too.

Redmi Note 11 Pros

  • Excellent display
  • 90Hz refresh rate
  • power-efficient

Redmi Note 11 Cons

  • Average secondary and selfie camera performance
  • Lacks 4K video recording
  • No video stabilisation
