Samsung Galaxy A90 will be powered by Snapdragon 855 SoC, to come with Tilt OIS: Report

0

Earlier this year, Samsung had promised to launch a new Galaxy A-series smartphone every month till June 2019. Till now, the company has kept its promise as there are more than 10 smartphones launched under the Galaxy A-series in the last 5 months. Till now, the top-end and the most unique smartphone in the Galaxy A-series is the Galaxy A80, that came with the world’s first rotating camera. Now, according to reports, Samsung might be planning to launch a new Galaxy A90 smartphone in the next few weeks. Last week, there were reports that Samsung Galaxy A90 would be a part of the company’s Galaxy R-series but now, the report seems to be incorrect. According to some new sources, the smartphone will be a part of the Galaxy A-series only and it would not be rebranded.

Currently, Samsung Galaxy A90 is still under development and it will be launched sometime in future. However, there is no specific timeline for the launch that has been confirmed as of now. According to a new leak, the device will come in two variants. The two variant of the Galaxy A90 holds the model names – SM-A905 and the SM-A908.

The Samsung Galaxy A90’s SM-A905 model will come with 4G connectivity and it will sport a large 6.7-inch display. The device will also come with an in-display fingerprint scanner and it will feature a triple rear camera setup. Its camera will reportedly comprise of a 48MP main camera sensor paired with a 12MP secondary camera along with a 5MP tertiary sensor. Other than that, there is also a new and unknown feature that the Galaxy A90 will be coming with called the “Tilt OIS”. From just the name, it sounds like a camera-related feature but nothing is known about what it is and what it does.

On the other hand, the Galaxy A90 with model number SM-A908 is the 5G variant and it sports a similar screen with an in-display fingerprint scanner. However, its sensors vary, it too features a triple-rear camera setup. Its camera setup includes a main 48MP primary sensor paired with an 8MP secondary sensor and a third 5MP tertiary sensor.

Camera features aside, the most important aspect of both these models of the Galaxy A90 is that they will reportedly be powered by the Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC. This makes it the first smartphone in the Galaxy A-series to be powered by the top-end Snapdragon CPU as all the other devices in the Galaxy A-series house Exynos or lesser CPUs.

If the reports are true, then it might be Samsung’s way of bringing a flagship CPU in an affordable smartphone. Although the price, the launch date and other details of the Galaxy A90 is still unknown, it will be launched sometime in the future.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC has been certified as secure for offline payments

0

American chipmaker Qualcomm’s current flagship processor – Snapdragon 855 – has today received a Common Criteria EAL-4+ certification, and this makes it the first ever SoC (system on chip) to be recognised to offer a smart card level security. With this certification, manufacturers can now use Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 855 process as the only secure storage area for applications like payment IDs, encryption keys and eSIM management. This, in a way, completely removes the need for a separate security chip.

We should mention that prior to the certification, smartphone makers had to include a separate security chip in the device so that it acted in a trusted manner. There was also a need for adding a secure area for holding sensitive data such as payment IDs and encryption keys. The companies also had to make sure that they complied with Google’s most stringent security requirements in Gatekeeper and StrongBox.

It is also worth adding that the possibilities go beyond current use cases as well. According to the company, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor can now be used as a secure storage container for applications like transit passes, Trusted Platform Modules, and crypto wallets.

However, with the certification, Qualcomm says that the companies can just use the Snapdragon 855 SoC and they don’t have to include any separate chip for security reasons. This is expected to save companies money on the overall build of materials and at the same time, it will free up some space in the device. In most cases, any amount of complexity that can be removed from the internal design of a smartphone is considered a win. It should be pointed out that this is not anything major for mobile phones that have been shipped with Snapdragon 855 and a security chip. However, we should mention that the certification does not apply retroactively.

But then, this is a very big deal for the new smartphones that will house the Snapdragon 855 SoC and even the future handsets that will run the next generation Snapdragon 800-series processor that is expected to go through the same certification.

A number of flagship devices this year house the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor. These include Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e, Galaxy S10 Plus, OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro and Asus 6Z. Even the upcoming flagship smartphones from Google are expected to be powered by the American chipmaker’s flagship SoC. Most of these devices are known for the powerful performance that they can offer, apart from other high-end features.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 5G variant receives the FCC certification: Here’s more on it

0

South Korean technology giant Samsung had unveiled its first foldable smartphone – Galaxy Fold – at the Unpacked event in San Francisco in February 2019. The device was showcased with the flagship Galaxy S10-series, and was considered to be one of the unique looking and impressive devices at the time of announcement. Days before its official launch, Samsung Galaxy Fold was diagnosed with multiple problems like blackened screen and hinge issues. After that, Samsung recalled all its Galaxy Fold units and put an indefinite halt to the launch of the Galaxy Fold smartphone.

Later, the company confirmed that it was working on solutions to fix the problems of the Galaxy Fold. Earlier, a spokesperson from the company had said that it will be releasing the Galaxy Fold in the coming weeks but he didn’t mention the dates of the launch.

Now, a 5G variant of Samsung Galaxy Fold has received the FCC certification. According to the leaks, the Galaxy Fold 5G variant’s FCC certification was filed back in April 25, 2019 and the one from an EMC report was approved on June 3. The leaks were first spotted by My Smart Price and if these leaks are true, then we might be seeing the launch of the Galaxy Fold soon enough. The EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) test makes sure that the handset doesn’t emit too much energy to cause interference to or from other devices.

We should mention that Galaxy Fold that was launched earlier this year did not come with 5G connectivity, so this seems to be a new variant of the handset. The 4G variant of the device supports dual-SIM cards through a nanoSIM along with an eSIM card. On the other hand, the 5G variant will support a single SIM card.

Other than this, the 5G variant of the Galaxy Fold still holds similar specifications and features that were present in the regular model of the smartphone. However, it will pack a smaller 4,235mAh battery instead of a 4,380mAh battery.

Talking about the delay of the Galaxy Fold, it was found by the YouTube Reviewers that the display of the Galaxy Fold was too fragile and was easily damaged. Due to Samsung’s recall of its Galaxy Fold devices, Huawei also delayed the launch of its Mate X foldable smartphone.

It may seem like the foldable smartphones might not make it to the mainstream market anytime soon, however, Samsung is still optimistic about it. The company’s Display VP said last week that Samsung will be launching the Galaxy Fold soon. However, he didn’t give a timeline of the launch so nothing can be said for now.

Compare: LG W30 Pro and Samsung Galaxy M40

After weeks of releasing teasers, LG finally launched its new W-series smartphones in India. According to the company, the LG W-series smartphones are aimed at the entry-level smartphone segment in India and it has three smartphones in it – the W10, W30 and the W30 Pro. We are comparing the top-end of the lot the LG W30 Pro with the newly launched Samsung Galaxy M40. Read on to find out how these two new devices compete against each other:

Display

LG W30 Pro: 6.217-inch HD+ FullVisionTM Display

Samsung Galaxy M40: 6.3-inch Full HD+ Infinity-O display with Gorilla Glass 3

The Samsung Galaxy M40 holds a larger display, and offers more resolution than the new LG W30 Pro and it also comes with a Gorilla Glass protection on top. This makes it the winner here.

Processor

LG W30 Pro: Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 632 SoC

Samsung Galaxy M40: Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 SoC

Both the smartphones come with the latest CPUs. However, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 675 SoC is fairly more powerful than the Snapdrgaon 632 SoC.

Rear camera(s)

LG W30 Pro: Triple Real Camera setup with 13 MP main sensor + 5MP secondary sensor + an 8MP tertiary sensor

Samsung Galaxy M40: Triple-rear camera setup with a 32MP main sensor + an 8MP ultra-wide-lens + a 5MP depth sensor.

Both the smartphones feature a triple-rear camera setup on their back panels but the resolution of their main cameras vary. Other than that, the other two cameras hold similar resolutions.

Selfie camera

LG W30 Pro: 16MP selfie camera

Samsung Galaxy M40: 16MP front camera

Both the smartphones have the same 16MP selfie camera. So as far as front-facing cameras go, there is a tie.

RAM and storage

LG W30 Pro: 4GB RAM/ 64GB storage

Samsung Galaxy M40: 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage

Samsung Galaxy M40 comes with more RAM and storage than the LG W30 Pro as it holds just 4GB of RAM.

Support for microSD card

LG W30 Pro: Yes

Samsung Galaxy M40: Up to 512GB

Both the smartphones support a microSD card and they both come with a hybrid SIM slot, so users will be able to put either two SIMs or a single SIM and a microSD card. But till the microSD card capacity of the LG W30 Pro is unannounced, we can’t really say which among the two wins.

Battery

LG W30 Pro: 4,000mAh battery

Samsung Galaxy M40: 3,500mAh battery

This is the department where the LG W30 Pro shines as it packs a larger 4,000mAh battery as compared to Samsung Galaxy M40’s 3,500mAh battery.

Operating system

LG W30 Pro: Android 9 Pie

Samsung Galaxy M40: Android 9 Pie skinned with One UI

Both the smartphones run Android 9 Pie. One comes with LG’s UI while the other has the Samsung’s One UI. However, we should mention that Samsung is far better than LG when it comes to rolling out software updates.

Starting Price

LG W30 Pro: TBA

Samsung Galaxy M40:  Rs 19,990 for the 6GB RAM/ 128GB storage variant

Although the price of the LG W30 Pro is currently not known but considering the specifications of the smartphone, it should be priced under Rs 15,000. On the other hand, the Galaxy M40 holds a price tag of Rs 19,990. However, it does come with better specifications and features. Both the smartphones have their own pros and cons, but then, we would have to wait till the price of LG W30 Pro is known to call one among the two a better value for money device.

Apple acquires self-driving startup Drive.ai days before it dissolved

Self-driving startup Drive.ai was once valued at $200 million. However, recent reports indicated that the company was shutting down and laying off all its staff. But now, that’s not going to happen as Cupertino-based technology giant Apple has confirmed that it has acquired the startup.

Around three weeks back, Apple was said to be in talks to acquire Drive.ai, that was founded in 2015 by machine learning researchers from Stanford University. The startup used to run a ride-hailing service in Texas, but the difference was that it used autonomous shuttles. The deal could mean that a dozen of Drive.ai engineers may join Apple’s Project Titan, which is known to have gone through its own set of troubles.

Earlier today, it seemed like the deal between the two companies did not work out as Drive.ai filed a notice with the state agency that indicated that it permanently wants to close down and lay-off its 90 employees. The report about this first surfaced in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Prior to this, a year ago, Drive.ai looked like one among the most promising startups that focussed on autonomous cars. The company was primarily known for using deep learning to recognize and avoid objects on the road. The company also made headlines last year when it conducted fixed route tests with its autonomous vehicles without any human safety drivers on public roads.

The company’s fleet consists of a modified Nissan NV200s that were orange in colour and had a wavy blue stripe and “self-driving vehicle” emblazoned on the side. The cars also featured four LED screens — one was placed on the hood, one on the rear and two were above each of the front tires. These display messages to pedestrians and anyone else in close proximity to the car. The screens displayed messages that conveyed the vehicle’s intent to others on the road. The messages included words like ‘Waiting’, ‘Going’, ‘Entering’, ‘Existing’, and more.

While a number of investors have put billions of dollars into autonomous vehicle startups and a number of them have readjusted their timelines because of the challenges that they have encountered. A lot of experts also see the full deployment of self-driving cars being years away.

As of now, there is no clarity on whether the company will be going ahead with its layoffs on Friday. According to reports, Apple has purchased Drive.ai’s assets, including its autonomous cars. However, it has also been said that the technology giant has chosen to hire engineers away from Drive.ai directly. Other workers may not get the same option.

Facebook may let you customize in-app notification badges

Social media giant Facebook is testing a new option of notification customization in order to make the elements present on its platform less distracting. According to a recent report that has surfaced online, Facebook is currently testing its ability to turn on and off the red notification dots on its platform that you get for various individual tabs. For those unaware, these are also known as badges. This should be useful for many. Not everyone is interested in what’s happening at Watch or Groups, so in a way, it’s distracting to see these badges on the top of the mobile app.

This development was found by app researcher and reverse-engineering expert Jane Manchun Wong. A report in TechCrunch said that Facebook is conducting a global experiment on its iOS as well as Android platforms. Speaking to the technology website, a Facebook spokesperson said, “We are testing new ways to give people more control over the notifications they receive in the Facebook app.”

The spokesperson also said that Facebook is aware of the fact that users don’t have to be reminded again and again that notifications are waiting for them. This is particularly true because now there are options of managing how specific app notifications appear with system-level customizations in Android as well as iOS.

Last year, John Herrman wrote an article in New York Times titled ‘How Tiny Red Dots Took Over Your Life’ that spoke about how the new notification design has been made in a way that it actually increases the likelihood of an average smartphone user to tap on an app icon or an in-app icon.

In his article, Herrman said, “What’s so powerful about the dots is that until we investigate them, they could signify anything: a career-altering email; a reminder that Winter Sales End Soon; a match, a date, a ‘we need to talk’.” So, the effect that a small notification can have on our brains can be categorised as hypnotizing to a great extent.

A number of technology companies have lately had awakenings about the kind of effects their apps and services can have on people and even society at large. A lot of companies have also started making efforts to help people manage their relationship with technology in a better and healthier manner. Google‘s Digital Wellbeing and Apple’s Screen Time are two such initiatives that have been taken by technology companies to help us manage our time on our devices.

However, until now, Facebook has not come up with its own way of helping people manage their time better. But then, it is worth pointing out that the social media giant does have dashboards for monitoring usage in the app as well as in Instagram. If it introduces notification customization, it will be another step in the direction of helping its users save their time.

Google has started testing offline mode for Google Drive

0

Google Drive is testing an offline mode for PDFs, images, and Microsoft Office files. Sometimes due to slow internet service, we are unable to access important files and documents. So, to find a solution for this problem Google is currently testing beta for offline access of PDFs, images, Microsoft Office files stored in Google Drive.

Previously in the month of May also Google drive introduced offline mode for documents, slides, and spreadsheets. So, to access this offline service Google is accepting applications for its beta programme. Only G suite organisation users are eligible for this testing feature. Till now Google has not revealed that when will be the final rollout of the Google Drive offline mode. But, it is being expected that the company will launch the final rollout of offline Google Drive soon.

This rollout will make the cloud services and to store content on the cloud easy to use. According to Google, the current version is not available for the users of Chrome OS, but the company has assured that it is working to bring this feature on Chrome as well.

As we mentioned earlier only G suite organisations are eligible to apply for the new beta version. So, they need to apply for the beta programme. The administrators and end users who have already opted for Google Drive offline mode for documents, slides, and spreadsheets will automatically be granted access for the beta as well.

The final users will need to allow the offline mode within Drive or settings. Then by signing into Chrome with your account that has been whitelisted for Google Group and admits Drive File stream. Now you are all set to test the beta version of Offline mode by selecting the non-Google file that is available offline. The offline preview of the file will also be displayed in the new feature.

In addition to this, the end users can also open any non-google file by clicking on the native applications. That means by within the native Microsoft office application you can open a Microsoft file in offline mode of Google Drive.

This seems to be an interesting move by Google. A lot of us were waiting for this feature to come in, as it saves a lot of internet data. The beta mode for Google Drive will also be active for some time, as we have seen in the past in some of the Google products.

MediaTek’s new Helio P65 SoC is able to support 48MP camera sensor and will offer better gaming performance

0

MediaTek makes CPUs for mobile phones and it is known for its mid-range SoCs offering good performance. Now, the company has announced a new CPU for mid-range smartphones – the MediaTek Helio P65 SoC. As its name suggests, the Helio P65 SoC falls in the Helio P-series of mid-range mobile CPUs and it is an upgraded version of the earlier Helio P60 SoC. According to the company, the new CPU offers a better gaming performance. It also offers 25% faster overall performance compared to the other similar SoCs in the market right now.

MediaTek P65 SoC has an octa-core build and it offers 100% boost in the AI performance of the smartphones along with a 30% improvement in the AI-assisted camera performance. These camera tasks include face recognition, bokeh effects etc. Other than that, the new CPU from MediaTek is also able to support 48MP camera sensors, in other words, we will get to see competitor to the Snapdragon 600-series CPUs, which is also capable of supporting the 48MP sensor. Over that, the new Helio P65 SoC is claimed to offer better security features to the smartphone users.

Talking about the specifications of the new CPU, the MediaTek Helio P65 SoC has two Cortex-A75 cores clocked at up to 2.0GHz (for high performance) and six Cortex-A55 cores (for daily tasks). The new CPU also comes with MediaTek’s CorePilot resource control system, which according to the company offers consistent performance when gaming. The MediaTek Helio P65 SoC is paired with the Mali-G52 GPU that can offer a peak frequency of 820MHz. It can also support up to 8GB of RAM and 2K (2,520 x 1,080 pixels) resolution display.

According to the company, the Helio P65 SoC comes with the most accurate GNSS and positioning system used by a mobile CPU.

As mentioned above, the MediaTek Helio P65 SoC is capable of supporting a 48MP camera sensor, it means that it can also support dual-camera setup with two 16MP sensors as well. Other camera features, which the Helio P65 SoC is capable of supporting are EIS (electronic image stabilization), RSC (rolling shutter compensation) along with a depth engine for a better bokeh effects while capturing images. The connectivity features that the Helio P65 SoC is capable of supporting is dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0 and FM radio.

All the features and the specifications of the new MediaTek Helio P65 SoC makes it sound like quite a powerful mobile SoC. But it remains to be seen how it handles the daily performance and how it competes with its rivals. The closest competitor to the Helio P65 SoC is most likely the Snapdragon 675 SoC or the Snapdragon 710 SoC. And till now, there is no announcement of any new smartphone with the Helio P65 SoC inside them. So, it remains to be seen how it compares against its rivals and how it performs.

Over 2,000 dangerous apps have been found on Google Play Store: Report

If there’s one thing that makes smartphones worthwhile, it is apps. Without apps, smartphones would not be able to do a number of things. However, not all apps are healthy for your smartphone. In a two-year long study that was conducted recently, it was found that 2,040 apps on the Google Play Store are harmful in some way. While some require permissions that they don’t really need, others come with malware.

The research was conducted by the University of Sydney and Data61 of CSIRO and it included around 1 million apps on the Google Play Store. It was then found that a large number of fake apps exist without malware, but still, they need permissions to access data that they don’t really need. If this is shocking to you, then you’ll be even more surprised to know that the list includes titles like Hill Climb Racing and Temple Run.

To process all the 1 million apps on Google’s Play Store, the researchers used neural networks and machine learning. The algorithm was designed to look for similar text description and icons. It scanned more than 10,000 most popular apps on Google Play Store and it was able to find 49,608 threats.

We should also mention that with the use of VirusTotal, around 7,246 of the apps were flagged as malicious and among these, 2,040 were spotted as fake and high-risk apps. In addition to this, 1,565 of the apps were found to be requesting at least five sensitive permissions and 1,407 embed third-party ads.

It is also worth adding that the apps that have been studied are also being removed and according to Google’s team, the number of rejected app submissions have increased more than 55% over the last one year. On the other hand, the suspension rate has gone up to 66%.

Speaking about the study, co-author Dr Suranga Seneviratne from the University of Sydney, “While Google Play’s success is marked on its flexibility and customizable features that allow almost anyone to build an app, there have been a number of problematic apps that have slipped through the cracks and have bypassed automated vetting processes.”

He further added, “Our society is increasingly reliant on smartphone technology so it’s important that we build solutions to quickly detect and contain malicious apps before affecting a wider population of smartphone users.”

This is not the first time that popular apps on Google Play Store have found to be malicious. There have been a number of times since the beginning of this year that the company has removed apps from its Play Store.

How to download and install the new iOS 13 beta build in your iPhone?

0

Apple has finally released the public version of its new iOS 13 beta. Although the stable version of the new OS is still months away, users can download and install the new OS in their devices and give it a test run. They can install the new iOS 13 and see what changes it has brought to the iPhones. Some of the new features have already been announced by the company at the WWDC 2019. But it’s always a different experience to actually use these features.

According to Apple, the new iOS 13 has a 30% faster face unlocking capability than the previous iOS. It also claims that the apps can now open twice as fast as they did in iOS 12. One of the most anticipated feature of the iOS 13 is the system wide dark mode which will darken the apps and background. It is also claimed to help in saving the battery life of the device. According to Apple, the dark mode will be supported by all the first party applications as well as app dock and notifications. Siri is also getting a new voice with the iOS 13.

But it should be kept in mind that not all the iPhone models will support the iOS 13. The only iPhones that can run the iOS 13 are – iPhone X-series, iPhone XS-series, iPhone 8-series, iPhone 7-series, iPhone 6-series, iPhone SE and iPod Touch (7th gen).

Here’s how you can install the iOS 13 public beta version in your iPhone (if it falls in the abovementioned list):

  1. First go to Apple’s beta software website from Safari browser. Keep in mind that the website won’t open in any browsers like Chrome or Firefox.
  2. Once the website opens, you need to click on “Enroll Your Devices” present at the top of the page.
  3. After that, click on “iOS”. On doing this, a reminder will open which will remind you to send a backup of your iPhone’s contents to your macOS PC. This is important because if you want to go back to the old OS, then you would need this backup file.
  4. After this, scroll down and look for a button with “Download Profile” written on it. Once clicked, it will bring a warning that will say that the website it trying to download a configuration profile. Click on “Allow”. This will download the configuration profile to your device.
  5. After that, a pop-up window will open that will say that you can set the new profile from the Settings app. Head to Settings, and then go to General and click on Software update.
  6. Tap on Download and Install.
  7. Once the new iOS 13 beta is downloaded, you can click on Install to download the beta build in your iPhone.

Keep in mind that since the iOS 13 is still in its beta version it may come with its own share of bugs. You can give feedback and report of the bugs and problems that you find in the new iOS 13 beta build. Hopefully, they will be fixed in the stable version of the new OS.

Apple’s iPhone 11 new case and screen protector reveal a protruding camera module

0

Apple is scheduled to launch its next iteration of iPhones later this year and it is expected to launch more than one iPhone models. This year’s model will be called iPhone 11 and it will have the most unique design seen in an iPhone till now. But even before its launch, the camera module and the exterior of the iPhone 11 has already been leaked. According to the leaks, the iPhone 11 will be sporting a triple rear camera setup placed in a square camera module. Although the company hasn’t confirmed it yet, but all the leaks state the same thing and that hints that the upcoming iPhone will hold the very same camera design.

According to the recent leaks, there will be three iPhone 11 models this year – the Phone 11 R, iPhone 11 and the iPhone 11 Max – although the names of the devices might vary. The rear cameras of the upcoming iPhone 11 will be the main focus point of this year’s iPhones. Apple is reportedly developing a dedicated night mode camera for improving the low light photography of the iPhone 11. There is also news is that the upcoming iPhone 11 will have 128GB of internal storage as its base variant, and this can also mean an increase in the starting price.

Recently, the cases of the iPhone 11 Max, the successor to the iPhone XS Max from the case maker Olixar have surfaced online. The cases are currently on sale even months before the launch of the official devices. If you are interested, you can head to UK retailer MobileFun’s online store to find them. It looks as if the camera placed in the module will be protruding as the case maker has also released a camera protector to prevent it from scratches.

Other than back covers, Olixar is also making and selling screen protectors for the upcoming iPhone 11 as well. Looking at their design, it seems as if the Cupertino-based technology giant will be adding additional sensors at the front of the smartphone.

A recent leak suggests that the upcoming iPhone 11’s triple-rear camera setup will pack a main camera, a telephoto lens and an ultra-wide lens. There are also hints of packing a quad-LED flash and secondary microphone placed in the square camera cut out module itself. With iOS 13’s beta build released today, the company claimed that the Face Unlock is 30% faster. So we might see a better face unlocking mechanism in the upcoming iPhone.

With iPhone 11’s launch on the horizon, it remains to be seen what new technologies Apple brings to the market. As a number of leaks earlier suggest that the device will come with a new iPhone with 5G support, however, it is highly unlikely that we would see it before 2020.

Microsoft warns users of a disguised Excel attachment that carries a notorious malware

Microsoft is one among the well-known and biggest PC operating systems in the world right now and due to this, the company’s products are used by a majority of the people. However, it is also one of the reasons that it is constantly targeted by hackers, viruses, malware and other infections. Previously, we saw that the around 1 million computers running Windows OS were exposed to a security exploit. Now, the company has made the headlines again as a new malware is attacking the Windows system using Microsoft’s own MS Office software’s macro functions. The malware uses the complex infection chain to download and run the FlawedAmmyy RAT malware directly to the PC’s memory.

The malware attacks start with an email and an .xls attachment. The attachment has content written in Korean language that hints that the malware has currently made Korean users as its primary target. The malware uses malicious macro features of the MS Excel spreadsheet attachment to attack the Windows PC.

According to a security firm Proofpoint, the malicious attack campaign was started by a group named TA505. They were caught in the past using similar patterns to attack the PC using malware. The security firm further states that this time, the group is using a malicious email along with an Excel attachment which Microsoft itself has asked the users not to open.

Microsoft has warned the users about the malware attacks using its Twitter account. It has tweeted, “When opened, the .xls file automatically runs a macro function that runs msiexec.exe, and that, in turn downloads an MSI archive. The MSI archive contains a digitally signed executable that is extracted and run[s], and that decrypts and runs another executable in memory.”

Microsoft has also said that its Threat Protection defends the users from this type of attacks. According to the company, “Cloud-based machine learning protections in Microsoft Defender ATP blocked all of the components of this attack at first sight, including the FlawedAmmyy RAT payload. Office 365 ATP detects the email campaign.”

Once the user downloads the attachment on his system, the malware also installs a file named wsus.exe. The downloaded file is then decrypted and it is designed in such a way that it would pass off as an official Microsoft Windows Service Update Service (WSUS). The digital signature of the file is signed on June 19 and it then decrypts the payload it is carrying in the RAM. The payload is none other than FlawedAmmyy Rat that has a notorious reputation.

Oppo teases its under-display camera technology a day before the launch

Chinese smartphone brand Oppo had earlier teased the selfie camera that is placed under the display of its upcoming handset. Now, the company has taken to microblogging website Twitter to say that we will be getting to see more of this technology very soon.

However, we should mention that there is not too much information that accompanies the tweet. All that it talks about is its plans to show a new solution for full-screen displays at the MWC Shanghai in June 2019. However, this is something that we knew already because the media invite to the company had leaked earlier.

The company has shared a 15-second video that has been embedded with a tweet that shows the progression that smartphones have gone through over the years. One can also see the clever ways a selfie camera has been included in the handsets and how the bezel has been shrinking increasingly.

The evolution also shows Oppo’s manually flip around selfie camera, the notch and the slide out front cameras. Other than this, we also get to see a full-screen display that has a circular outline where the sensor is hidden underneath the display.

Oppo’s tweet just read, “A brand new solution for full-screen display. OPPO Innovation Event @GSMA MWC Shanghai, June 26. Stay tuned. #MoreThanTheSeen #MWC19.”

In the previous teaser, the tweet showed off a disguised smartphone with a full-screen display. However, then the camera app of the smartphone opens up to reveal a live view camera underneath the screen.

As of now, there is no information about the specifications, details and the quality of the camera that hides behind the screen of the smartphone. It is expected that Oppo will be giving us more information about how the camera works and what its quality is like soon.

It is also worth mentioning that Oppo is not the only smartphone maker that has expressed its interest in under-display camera technology. Other companies like Xiaomi and Honor are also working on similar technologies and are expected to announce their respective offerings soon.

Since last year, a number of companies have found ways of hiding the selfie camera in ways that help them provide a completely full-screen experience. While Vivo has used a pop-up selfie camera module in a number of devices, Oppo came up with the camera slider that was also copied by others. This year, we have seen the rotating camera module from Samsung, and now, we are all set to see an under-display camera technology getting launched.
