Coronavirus Impact: Global Smartphone shipment collapsed 13% in the Q1 of 2020

During this critical situation when the whole world is struggling in the tech industry has been hit by the pandemic the smartphone shipment falls to 13 per cent to 272 million units. In the first quarter, the demand for mobile phones dipped. Samsung managed to regain its first position but its shipment fell 17 per cent to 60 million.

According to a report by Canalys, the smartphone market was doing good when it entered 2020. But in February when coronavirus was spreading in China the brands were mostly worried about how they were going to meet the global demand as most of the industries were shut. When the situation came into control, half of the world entered lockdown.

Canalys Senior Analyst Ben Stanton said, “Smartphone manufacturing has now recovered, but as half the world entered a lockdown, sales plummeted. Poor business results, employee redundancies and furloughs are causing a great deal of anxiety and uncertainty. Smartphones are still a necessity for most people, and device availability in online channels has enabled those who need to replace a broken or lost phone to do so. But many customers who would have bought a new smartphone as a luxury have delayed that purchase.”

Worldwide smartphone shipments and annual growth

According to the report, Smasung was one of the brands who could withstand the impact. Huawei shipped 49 million, as its mix continues to shift toward China and away from overseas markets due to its US Entity List status. Due to its ongoing US Entity List problems its shipment dropped down to 35%.

Whereas Apple was least affected due to the sale of the iPhone 11 in the early stages of the quarter. To overcome the loss the company just launched the iPhone SE. The company aims to increase the shipment of its device as its flagship customers await 5G devices. Apple is currently the third-largest vendor, down 8% with 37 million shipments. Whereas Xioami is going well and it continued to retain its position in the top five list with a  9% growth to hit 30 million units whereas Vivo takes the fifth position with 24 million units, up 3%.

Quarter second of 2020 will show the peak of the coronavirus’ impact. As countries start lifting the lockdown the full economic damage will become visible.

The Counterpoint report also says that “the global smartphone market declined the fastest ever, -13% YoY, during the quarter 5G smartphone shipment share, increased to 8% in Q1 2020 from 1% in Q4 2019 Xiaomi (7%) YoY, and Realme (157% YoY) were the only major brands to achieve growth Apple remained resilient even during the COVID-19 as iPhone shipments declined only 5% YoY Q1 2020”

According to the report, the combined market share of the top 10 brands has increased to 83%, from 80% in Q1 2019. The ongoing effect of the pandemic on the smartphone market is likely to be worse in the second quarter of 2020. The impact on the OEMs will depend on the markets, channels, and price bands they operate in with some OEMs affected more than others.

To take on Zoom the Indian telecom company Reliance Jio has introduced its video conferencing app JioMeet

With the JioMeet app Reliance Jio forays into the video conferencing territory. Reliance Jio Industries announced the arrival of the new app while announcing its quarterly earnings. The company launched the video conferencing app to take on other platforms such as Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Teams who are already running the industry. These are the most popular apps that are widely being used by everyone while staying connected with their loved ones or while working from home hosting virtual meetings.

Zoom is already under scrutiny due to security concerns. Recently, the Indian government warned its employees about using video conferencing app Zoom for official purposes. The app has become popular amongst people during the nationwide lockdown. Many other companies such as Google have also asked its employees to refrain using the app.

The JioMeet app can be used as an alternative to the app due to an increase in demand for video conference platforms in the country. The app comes with features such as it is compatible with any device, any operating system and is capable of doing collaborations. Meaning you can not only use the app for video calling but it can be used to consult a doctor to get prescriptions.

Furthermore, the company aims to collaborate with the education platforms for creating virtual classrooms for teachers as well as students. They would be able to use its submit assignments and ability to take virtual tests. In India, the coronavirus cases are rising so to contain the spread of COVID-19 the Indian Government has imposed lockdown in the country so all the schools and other educational institutions, businesses and offices remain closed.

The JioMeet app allows up to 100 participants to join a video call. Whereas both Google Meet and Zoom also comes with the same capability. Recently social media platforms Facebook also launched Messenger Rooms that allows up to 50 people in a single call.

The JioMeet app will be available across various platforms such as iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Outlook through the plugin, Google Chrome as well as Mozilla Firefox. The users will be able to log in to the platforms via email ID and password as a guest to join a meeting. The app will be offering HD quality for best video calling experience. Let’s see if the JioMeet app will be able to replace other popular platforms.

Live image of OnePlus Z leaked on the web, to come with a punch-hole design display

Very recently ve reported that the new Oneplus smartphone OnePlus Z will get launched by July this year. And now the alleged render of the smartphone is here. The recently launched OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 pro comes with a curved display whereas the leaked render shows the OnePlus Z with a flat display as it is expected to be a toned-down variant of OnePlus 8.

Many of the reports claim that the upcoming smartphone from OnePlus either be called OnePlus 8 or OnePlus Z. Now the live images of the device have been leaked by TrueTech flaunting its front panel. By looking at the alleged live image we could guess that the new OnePlus smartphone is expected to go for a flat-display instead of a curved one which we have seen on the company’s latest OnePlus 8 series. The device is said to come with an in-display fingerprint sensor for security indicating an Optic AMOLED display.

Unlike OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro, the OnePlus Z is seen to feature a centrally placed punch hole to house a selfie camera. The OnePlus 8 series comes with a camera cut out placed on the top left corner on the screen featuring a selfie camera. Whereas the power button and the volume rocker has been placed on the left side of the device.

Recently a tipster shared an image containing the sketch of the OnePlus Z revealing that the smartphone could get launched in July this year. Moreover, the sketch of the smartphone also revealed that the phone will be sporting a hole-punch selfie camera at the centre on the top. This features matched with the leaked alleged live image.

Whereas the previous reports claim that the device will be powered by a MediaTek processor instead of a Snapdragon chipset to support 5G connectivity. The smartphone is said to be offered in 8GB of RAM with 128GB and 256GB of storage option. The smartphone is expected to be a pocket-friendly yet premium device and the price is expected to be around Rs 30,000. The reports also suggest that the OnePlus’s upcoming mobile phone is the successor to OnePlus X that was launched in 2015. It is rumoured to with a  6.4-inch display, a triple rear camera set up and will be supported by a  4,000mAh battery.

The contact tracing Aarogya Setu app will come pre-installed on new smartphones

Earlier last month the India Government launched a mobile tracking app for COVID-19 called Aarogya Setu app. The app is available for both iOS and Android users and has been the National Informatics Centre. The app is aimed at augmenting the initiatives of the Government of India, particularly the Department of Health, in proactively reaching out to and informing the users of the app regarding risks, best practices and relevant advisories pertaining to the containment of COVID-19. The app is under a new controversy as the Government has asked all its employees to come to office after they see a “safe” status for commuting by the app. Now according to a new report touts that the Aarogya Setu app will come pre-install to all the latest smartphones in India.

Yes, from now on whenever you buy a new smartphone you will see the Aarogya Setu App pre-installed in your device. This is because the Government is planning to make this a mandatory for the owner to register themself on the App even before it is ready to use. According to a report by Mint, the COVID-19 tracking app might come installed in your new smartphones by default. This piece of information has been shared by the publisher’s sources from the industry, one a smartphone maker and the other from the Manufacturers Association for Information Technology (MAIT).

Aarogya Setu App

As all the manufacturing units in the country remain closed due to coronavirus lockdown the pre-install of the app on the new smartphones will only be possible when the manufacturing of the new devices resumes. The government aims at popularising the app in greater numbers as the Prime Minister is also urging the citizens to download the app in view of coronavirus spread. This would help the government to trace the infected person with the use of the app. Based on the South Korea and Singapore experience of contact tracing the Indian government will be able to make its own efforts through the app.

Recently the central government employees have been asked to download the app so that they can come to the office. So before they start for the office they should review their status on the mobile application. When it shows a safe status or low risk then only they can come to the office. In case the app shows ”moderate” or ”high risk” status they are not advised for commuting to the office and should remain at home or self-isolation for 14 days till their status starts showing a safe or low risk. The government has issued this order to all the departments that come under central government and a higher level office ( Joint Secretary) should be responsible to ensure strict compliance of the instructions. They can also issue the same orders to all the autonomous, statutory bodies, PSUs etc attached to them.

Intel launches 10th Gen Core S-series Processor for more enjoyable gameplay

0

In what seems to be a strategy to compete with AMD Ryzen line-up, Intel has now launched its 10th Gen Intel Core S-Series Processor with a boost speed of up to 5.3GHz as games and most applications continue to depend on high-frequency cores. It is achieved with assistance from Intel’s Thermal Velocity Boost technology. TVB kicks in when a CPU is sufficiently cooled and power is available for the boost.

According to Intel, the 10th Gen Intel Core S-Series Processor, by bringing world’s fastest gaming processor, provides high framerates, a foundation element for achieving lower latency while playing your favourite game while bearing the multi-tasking workload. Mind you! This is where frequency matters.

The processor also features new Turbo Boost Max Technology 3.0 that identifies the best performing cores to provide increased performance. According to Intel, the 10th Gen Intel Core desktop processor showcases its two best cores operating in this mode for improved single and dual-core turbo performance. However, Intel notifies that there is no increase in voltage applied.

The new processor by Intel has optimized and threaded features like AI Animations, and physics, for Intel CPU Architecture in order to get maximum number of units displayed on screen while maintaining playable framerates.

The new10th Gen Intel Core desktop processor comes with elite real-world performance for gaming. As per the company, “Developed in partnership with Intel, Dynasty Mode is a new horde-style arcade mode for Total War: Three Kingdoms where you choose three heroes to fight off as many waves of units as you can.”

Besides this, the new processor is also optimized to win Remnant: From the Ashes implemented Software Masked Occlusion Culling utilizing more CPU resources, resulting in better game play. Developed on the Unreal Engine, this game as well takes advantage of years of engine optimization driven in part by Intel’s multi-year engagement with the Unreal Engine.

As far as what Intel gaming partners believe about this new processor, Vladimir Ostapenko, Head of Development, World of Tanks, said, “With the 10th Generation of its Core platform, Intel is once again pushing the boundaries of the modern CPU architecture. The performance boost compared to the predecessors will ensure the World of Tanks Core engine fully unleashes its potential, allowing for deeper immersion and more enjoyable gameplay.”

“The decade-long partnership between Creative Assembly and Intel delivers results which directly benefit our players. Through a keener understanding of new hardware architecture, engine optimizations and new load-balancing techniques, our partnership enables the Total War engine to evolve with every iteration, placing us on a sounder technological footing each time and providing class-leading strategy experiences for players, in both gameplay and performance terms,” according to Creative Assembly.

Stay tuned for more updates from Intel.

Microsoft’s cloud computing services help reduce impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Q3 FY2020 earnings

0

With a rise in demand for its cloud computing services during the first three months of the year, Microsoft has announced that its revenue, which was $35.0 billion, has now increased 15 percent and the net income, which was $10.8 billion, has registered an increase of 22 percent for the quarter ended March 31, 2020, as compared to the corresponding period of last fiscal year.

Claiming that Microsoft has witnessed two years’ worth of digital transformation in two months, Satya Nadella, CEO of the tech giant, said, “From remote teamwork and learning, to sales and customer service, to critical cloud infrastructure and security – we are working alongside customers every day to help them adapt and stay open for business in a world of remote everything. Our durable business model, diversified portfolio, and differentiated technology stack position us well for what’s ahead.”

In a statement issued by Microsoft, the operating income was $13.0 billion and has now increased by 25 percent while the diluted earnings per share was $1.40 and it has now increased by 23 percent as against the third quarter during the last fiscal year.

Stressing upon Microsoft’s commitment to balancing operational discipline with continued investments in key strategic areas to drive future growth, Amy Hood, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Microsoft, stated, “In this dynamic environment, our sales teams and partners executed a solid third quarter, with Commercial Cloud revenue generating $13.3 billion, up 39 percent year-over-year.”

Microsoft further revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had minimal net impact on the total company revenue in the third quarter of fiscal year 2020. In the Productivity and Business Processes and Intelligent Cloud segments, cloud usage increased, particularly in Microsoft 365 including Teams, Azure, Windows Virtual Desktop, advanced security solutions, and Power Platform, as customers shifted to work and learn from home. In the final weeks of the quarter, there was a slowdown in transactional licensing, particularly in small and medium businesses, and a reduction in advertising spend in LinkedIn.

Besides this, Windows OEM and Surface benefited from increased demand to support remote work and learn scenarios in the More Personal Computing segment, offset in part by supply chain constraints in China that improved late in the quarter. Gaming benefited from increased engagement following stay-at-home guidelines. Search was negatively impacted by reductions in advertising spend, particularly in the industries most impacted by COVID-19. The effects of COVID-19 may not be fully reflected in the financial results until future periods.

Revenue in Productivity and Business Processes was $11.7 billion and increased 15 percent (up 16 percent in constant currency). Looking more closely, Microsoft has stated that its Office Commercial products and cloud services revenue increased 13 percent driven by Office 365 Commercial revenue growth of 25 percent. Besides this, Microsoft Office Consumer products and cloud services revenue increased 15 percent with continued growth in Office 365 Consumer subscribers to 39.6 million while LinkedIn revenue increased 21 percent.

As per Microsoft, its server products and cloud services revenue increased 30 percent driven by Azure revenue growth of 59 percent. On the other hand, Microsoft Windows Commercial products and cloud services revenue increased 17 percent while Xbox content and services revenue increased 2 percent along with Microsoft Surface revenue registering hike of 1 percent.

As far as Microsoft’s response to COVID-19 is concerned, the company notified “our focus remains on ensuring the safety of our employees, striving to protect the health and well-being of the communities in which we operate, and providing technology and resources to our customers and partners to help them do their best work while remote.”

MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 5G SoC to be world’s first AV1 video decoder for smartphones

0

In order to provide users incredible visual quality and smoother video experiences while using less data, MediaTek has announced that it will enable YouTube video streams using the cutting-edge AV1 video codec on the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 5G SoC. With this, the MediaTek Dimensity 1000 will become the world’s first smartphone SoC to integrate an AV1 hardware video decoder by enabling it to play back AV1 video streams up to 4K resolution at 60fps.

As video streaming is the top most activity that most of the smartphone owners are engaged in, the users can enjoy longer battery life through the Dimensity 1000’s more power efficient hardware-based AV1 video decoder.

“MediaTek is engaged in consistently upgrading its offerings to enhance user experience, and AV1 technology is a prime example. Video is now the most used form of communication, with 70% of Millennials and Gen Z reportedly using streaming services,” said Dr Yenchi Lee, Assistant General Manager of MediaTek’s Wireless Business Unit.

Combined with its ultra-fast 5G connectivity in a single chip, the Dimensity 1000 leads the industry in design and capability.

It is worth mentioning that the AV1 video codec is creating a landmark change in the video streaming industry. First released in 2018 by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia), AV1 is royalty-free, crafted to replace the VP9 codec and become the Internet Video Codec (NETVC) standard. AV1 is an ultra-high-performance video codec technology that delivers 30% more compression efficiency over existing VP9.

“AV1 has become an increasingly important format to allow high-resolution playback on handheld devices, and we’re excited that MediaTek has implemented dedicated AV1 hardware to advance its adoption, such as what’s included in their Dimensity 1000 5G SoC,” said Matt Frost, Director of Product Management of Google Chrome.

“As mobile video streaming becomes more prevalent, new use cases like MediaTek’s emphasize the important work of developing next-generation codecs,” added Frost.

As per the Industry reports, the video streaming market is likely to expand at a CAGR of 19.6 percent and touch $124.57 billion by 2025. Mind you! Video streaming market is one of the principle drivers of 5G services. In order to capture this market, MediaTek is leading the way in enabling effective video streaming with AV1.

OnePlus Z could get launched under the budget segment in July this year

OnePlus recently unveiled its latest smartphone globally, the OnePlus 8 Series. The line up includes two devices namely OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro. The company launched the devices in China a few weeks back and before this, it shared a picture of a white mystery box via its social media channel. The box was rumoured to contain a toned-down variant the new series being called as OnePlus Z. Now again the device is new and this time a tipster has predicted the timeline for the launch of the device.

A tipster named Max J has taken to Twitter to reveal that the Chinese company might unveil the OnePlus Z device in July this year. He also shared an image which contains a sketch of the upcoming device revealing that the handset might feature a centrally placed punch hole housing a selfie camera. The feature tipped is in line with the earlier reports that also declared a similar feature. However, there is still now confirmed dare for the launch of the device.

Many of the previous reports claim that the toned-down variant of the OnePlus 8 will be known as the OnePlus 8 Lite. Whereas some other reports suggest that the company is likely to bring the successor to the OnePlus X that was introduced back in 2015 which means after a gap of five long years the company will begin where it left. The device is expected to range somewhere around Rs 30,000. OnePlus devices are popular for its premium features, loaded smartphones being offered at much affordable pricing so we can expect that the company might launch an affordable option to its fans who are seeking a pocket-friendly yet premium device.

However, it is a matter of consideration that recently the company introduced its new headset called OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z and the “Z” tag used in the name of headphones also indicates the same OnePlus “Z” branding what the reports are talking about.

The reports suggest that the OnePlus Z or OnePlus 8 Lite will come with a  6.4-inch display, a triple camera set up on the back and a hole-punch display. It is said to house a 4,000mAh battery.

Many smartphones, laptops and other gadgets are long due in the country. But the company is hoping to soon bring the long-awaited RedmiBook and Mi-laptops to India.

Earlier this year the company was scheduled to bring the RedmiBook 13 notebook to the Indian market but unfortunately could not. It even got a trademark for RedmiBook in the country registered. Now the company is again planning to bring the MI laptops to India however it did not confirm any official timeline to launch the Redmi device.

Via an online meeting with the retailers Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain revealed to launch Redmibook and Mi laptops in India soon. This piece of information was shared by tipster Ishan Agarwal via its Twitter account. His tweet reads, “@manukumarjain said in today’s online meeting with retailers that Mi/ Redmi Laptops will launch in India ASAP (HOPE!). Didn’t provide any concrete date/timeline. Not planning to launch any Tabs like Mi Pad, though. Didn’t comment on upcoming launches like Mi 10 lite/K30 Pro”

This indicated that the company is ready to launch its products in the country but is waiting until the lockdown is lifted. Until the lockdown is over the government has banned the sale of non-essential items such as smartphones and other electronics gadgets.

Even before the lockdown was not there Manu Kumar Jain dropped a hint about the launch of its Mi10 series in India stating that the Mi 10 series might be pricier in India.

Also, there are so many leaks floating on the web that indicates that the company is going to bring its latest K30 Pro series to India under its spin-off Poco. In India, it will be rebranded as Poco F2 Pro.

Digital platform has gained a centre-stage in our lives in the unprecedented times of the COVID-19 pandemic as people are turning to new apps and communications tools to work, learn, access information, and stay connected with loved ones. While keep us connected at one hand, it is also posing online security risks for the users. Google has now come out with simple tips, tools and resources to help you stay secure everywhere online.

In a blog post, Saikat Mitra, Director – Trust & Safety at Google, said, “During the past couple of weeks across the globe, our advanced machine-learning classifiers have seen 18 million daily malware and phishing attempts related to COVID-19, in addition to more than 240 million COVID-related spam messages.”

If you wish to know how can you identify and avoid COVID-19 scams as the Internet is being bombarded with them in the form of phishing emails, it’s important to pause and evaluate any COVID-19 related email before clicking any links or taking other actions. In a blog post, Saikat Mitra, Director – Trust & Safety at Google, said, “Be wary of requests for personal information such as your home address or bank details. Fake links often imitate established websites by adding extra words or letters to them—check the URL’s validity by hovering over it (on desktop) or with a long press (on mobile).” Google has even provided these tips online on Google Safety centre at g.co/covidsecuritytips in Hindi and English, with more Indian languages being added in the coming weeks. A user can also download these tips as handy one-pagers both in Hindi and English languages.

Google advises you users to use a password manager to create and store strong passwords. With all the new applications and services you might be using for work and school purposes, it can be tempting to use just one password for all. According to the tech giant, “To keep your private information private, always use unique, hard-to-guess passwords. A password manager, like the one built into Android, Chrome, and your Google Account can help make this easier.”

The California-based tech giant has further asked users to protect their Google Account. Therefore, if you use a Google Account, you can easily review any recent security issues and get personalized recommendations to help protect your data and devices with the Security Checkup. Besides this, you can also run a Password Check-up to find out if the password you have saved for third party sites or accounts have been compromised. If that’s the case, quickly change the old password with a new one to be safe.

Besides this, you should also consider adding two-factor authentication in order to be able to gain an extra layer of security. Mind you! This helps keep out anyone who shouldn’t have access to your accounts by requiring a secondary factor on top of your username and password to sign in. If you security is at stake online, all you need to do is enroll in Google’s strongest security offering Advanced Protection Program at g.co/advancedprotection.

Meanwhile, Google has also built advanced security protections into Google products to automatically identify and stop threats before they ever reach its users. The tech giant’s machine learning models in Gmail already detect and block more than 99.9 percent of spam, phishing and malware.
