ARM cuts ties with Huawei amid the US trade ban

After Google, Intel, Qualcomm and Broadcom, chip designer ARM has suspended its business with Chinese smartphone maker Huawei. This is a major cause of concern for the smartphone brand as this would affect its ability to create its own processors. According to a report that has surfaced online, employees at ARM have been instructed to stop “all active contracts, support entitlements, and any pending engagements” with Huawei because of the US trade ban.

The United States has banned any companies in the country from doing business with Huawei without getting permission from the government. We should point out that ARM is based in the United Kingdom and is owned by Japan’s SoftBank. But even then, it has decided to halt its business with Huawei, according to a report in BBC News.

The company is concerned that it is affected because of the US ban as it has an internal memo that reveals that its chip designs come with ‘US-origin technology‘. We should mention that ARM develops some processor designs in Austin, Texas and San Jose, California and these can be counted under the restrictions that have been imposed by the United States.

Huawei depends on ARM for chip architecture designs for its own processors and it pays the company to get a license for these. Without these licenses, the Chinese smartphone brand will not be able to continue manufacturing its own processors using ARM designs. Huawei needs these designs for its HiSilicon fabless semiconductor company.

As of now, it is not clear if ARM has made this move because it is being cautious about the ban that has been imposed by the US government or because it has directly been advised to step its business with the Chinese smartphone brand. If it is the former, Huawei would still have other semiconductor companies to go to, however, if it is the latter, we may get to see other companies backing off too.

It has been reported though that Huawei has stockpiled enough US made parts to last three months to a year, so it definitely does have enough to keep its operations running. However, stockpiling is not exactly a solution as the company will run out the parts at some point in time.

Other US-based manufacturers that Huawei relies on include Micron, Skyworks, and Qorvo. Without access to key components from them and ARM, Huawei now faces a nearly impossible task of manufacturing smartphones without any US technology inside them.

Windows 10 May 2019 update is now rolling out to all via stable update

Software giant Microsoft has finally started rolling out the Windows 10 May 2019 update to everyone. The Windows 10 May 2019 update is the next major build of Windows 10 and it is currently being rolled out in a phased manner and will soon reach all the people across the globe. The new update comes with a number of new features such as giving users enhanced control over the installation of updates, a dedicated sandbox that can be used for testing apps and more.

We should mention that Windows 10 May 2019 update rollout is accompanied by the release of Windows health dashboard that lets users find out about the status of updates, bugs that are associated with them and more. In addition to this, you should know that you need to have a minimum of 32GBof storage on your system for both the versions of the update (32-bit and 64 bit). You would also have to make sure that there isn’t any SD card or a USB drive plugged into the PC or laptop, because in such a case, the update would not be installed.

It is also worth adding that the update had arrived on the Windows Insider Release Preview Ring and Microsoft’s Media Creation tool before it finally became available for everyone today via a stable update. Microsoft had promised that it will be releasing the stable update in May itself and it kept its word.

Coming to the changes that have been introduced by the update, a new delivery mechanism has been added that gives users more control over when they should install an update. With the new update, users will also be able to pause all update activity for 35 days and instead go for installing updates manually. Speaking of Windows Health dashboard, it will enable users to check the status of updates and understand what are the potential issues that are associated with it.

The integrated Cortana search bar will also be separated and you will now be able to find it as a separate Cortana button and a dedicated search bar. We should mention that this change is being tested since the beginning of 2019.

Windows Sandbox is another very key change that has been added. It is basically a virtualisation feature that will allow users to test programs in an isolated environment so that it can be of no harm in the native system. The software giant has announced that the update will be rolled out in a phased manner. You can check for the Windows 10 May 2019 update on your PC by going to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.

E3 2019 is scheduled to kick off in the second week of June. It will be a place where all the major video game companies will be revealing their main and concept works. But it has already been confirmed that one of the biggest players of the video game industry, Sony, won’t be attending the E3 2019 this year. According to the company, it is busy developing the next generation of gaming console – the Sony PS5. So, it is only obvious that the next big player of the tech and game industry, Microsoft, will take the stage to reveal its own new projects taking the lead from Sony.

A NeoGAF user Braldryr has leaked detailed information about Microsoft’s plans, launches, hardware, software and press conference at the upcoming E3 2019. According to the leak, Microsoft has planned some serious gaming titles releases at the E3 2019. Although the company hasn’t said anything about the leaks or the titles. The leaks states that Microsoft will be releasing Halo Infinite, Gears of War 5, Cyberpunk 2077, a Fable reboot, Battletoads and Age of Empires IV.

It should be noticed that some of these games have been postponed multiple times in the past while some of them weren’t confirmed by the firm. Only few of them among these titles had their trailers or teasers released by the company. Also, there are many games in the list which are scheduled to be launched next year in 2020.

Microsoft reportedly will also be releasing the Project xCloud – a cloud-based gaming service which will be a major focal point of the company at E3 2019. Project xCloud’s public test dates will also be announced at the gaming expo. Other than that, Microsoft will reportedly also be announcing the Xbox Lockheart along with Xbox Anaconda next-gen consoles. There is news that the company might not release the hardware and the consoles at the E3 2019.It might be, they will be talking about the internal specifications and the features the new consoles will come with.

Furthermore, Microsoft might also reveal a new Forza Motorsport game along with a new MechAssult game. There might also be a reboot of the Perfect Dark series that will be developed by a new Studio, in association with MS.

With Sony out of the picture from the upcoming E3 2019 gaming expo, Microsoft should take a huge lead in the gaming and the game console industry. And with new gaming consoles and titles scheduled for launch, this year will be an exciting one for the gamers.

Google Duo now lets you add up to 8 people in a single group video call

1

Google Duo – the video calling application by Google has gotten a new feature, which will allow up to eight people to join in on a single call, all at once. Earlier the group video chat size was limited to just four people. This new feature was rolled out by the California-based tech firm Google after the company had brought its new group video calling feature to the Duo platform. Earlier, the company had limited this feature to Indonesia only. But with the beginning of this month, Google rolled out this feature to Brazil, Canada, India, Mexico, US, and other countries as well.

Principal Engineer and the Engineering Lead of Google Duo, Justin Uberti in a tweet revealed that the number of people in Google Duo’s video calling has been increased from four to eight members.

The new update of Google Duo will allow its users to add 7 more members to the group video call and they can all see and hear/talk to each other at the same time. The users can download the new update by going to the Google Play Store on Android and App Store for iOS. Yes,the feature is now available on both Android and iOS devices.

When it started, Google Duo only allowed one person to call on its video chat. But Google released a new update last month which allowed the users to make group video calls and add three people to their video call. As mentioned above, the group video calling feature of Google Duo was earlier made available to Indonesia. This was later rolled out to other countries including India.

And now with Google Duo supporting eight people on a group chat it has leaped ahead of its competition. The instant messaging platform, WhatsApp too has a video calling feature and it allows a maximum of four members to video chat simultaneously with each other in a single video call. And seeing the usage and user base of WhatsApp, it was an extremely useful feature to connect with friends and family together by adding three people to a video call. But now that Google Duo gives the user to add up to seven people in a single video call it has gotten ahead of its competition.

Although, Google Duo now supports group calling, it still is behind WhatsApp in terms of user base. Over that, it is behind Google’s own Hangouts in terms of number of people who can be invited to a video call. Google Hangouts allows up to 25 people to be connected with a video call simultaneously.

Sony has revealed details about its upcoming PlayStation 5

0

Sony’s last gaming console – the PS4 Pro was one of the best consoles of its time. But in the field of technology, everything gets old in a matter of a few months and so did the PS4. Although Sony hasn’t revealed the launch date of its upcoming gaming console – the Sony PlayStation 5 (PS5) – the company had teased us with some elements of the PS5. During a corporate strategy presentation, Sony has listed out all the information it has revealed about its next console till now. The company also confirmed that the PS5 will be backwards compatible, which means that it will be able to play all the games designed for current-generation consoles and it will also be compatible with the current version of PlayStation VR. It is made possible as the PS5’s architecture is similar to that of PS4.

Other than that, Sony has also said that it will bring out more AAA titles for the PS4 and it will use the PS4 games to encourage the early adopters which is vital for its success. The company also sees the earlier PS4 as the “engine of engagement and profitability” for the next three years. But if the company is planning to make the PS5 big then its own PS4 could prove to be challenging.

The upcoming PS5 will be powered by a new CPU as well as a new GPU, and both of them will be much more powerful than the current generation consoles. According to the lead System architect March Cerny’s interview in Wired, the PS5 will use a 3rd-generation AMD Ryzen CPU with 8 cores paired with a custom GPU built on AMD Radeon Navi family. Sony also confirmed that the PS5 will support Ray Tracing which we have only seen on high-end gaming PCs till now.

Sony has said that the PS5 will have 3D Audio support and it will use SSD instead of HDD to make it faster than before. The company also compared the Sony PS5 to the current generation of Sony PS4 showing that the next gen console will be around 10 times faster than the PS4 Pro. It will also perform more complex and intense graphics related work more smoothly.

The PS5 will have support of 8K graphics which will only be support on an 8K TV, a feat which even the most powerful gaming PCs have trouble overtaking. The company also announced that the Sony PS5 will not be fully digital as it will also have disc support and can play disc games as well. So, it will be able to run the PS4 disc games with ease. Sony is also making its PlayStation Now better and stronger to support streaming which has become a big thing now.

But all the information aside what the company still hasn’t revealed yet is its date of release, its price, what the user experience will be like and which countries will be the first to receive the all new PS5. The company also hasn’t revealed information about a single game which will be coming to the PS5 but it is assured that it will be able to play the current generation titles.

Google stored some passwords in plain text since 2005

Technology giant Google has published a blog today in which says that it recently discovered a bug that caused passwords of some G Suite users to be stored in plain text. The company also admitted that the bug has been there since 2005, however, there is no evidence of anyone’s password being accessed improperly. In order to take corrective measures, Google is resetting any passwords that might have been affected and is also letting G Suite administrators know about the problem.

For those unaware, G Suite is the business version of Gmail and other apps by Google. The bug is said to have come in this product because of a feature designed especially for companies. Previously, it was possible for the company administrator for G Suite apps to set user passwords manually. This was usually used when a new employee came on board. However, if the company administrators did set the password manually, the admin console saved them in plain text and did not has them. Google has now removed this capability from administrators.

Google has spoken in detail about the entire issue in its blog post. It says that even though the passwords were saved in plain text, they were stored inside Google’s servers. According to the company, they will be harder to get than they were had they been on the open internet. While Google has put this in a way that is less explicit, the company seems to be making sure that people don’t put this incident in the same category as other plain text password problems where passwords have been leaked.

to recall, microblogging website Twitter advised all its users to change passwords in March this year because of a breach. Facebook admitted that it had stored “hundreds of millions” of passwords in plain text in a way where up to 20,000 of its employees could access them. The Facebook breach affected millions of users on Instagram too.

While Google has not characterized how many users have been affected by this bug, we can assume that anyone who was using G Suite in 2005 is affected. Speaking about the issue, Google said, “We take the security of our enterprise customers extremely seriously, and pride ourselves in advancing the industry’s best practices for account security. Here we did not live up to our own standards, nor those of our customers. We apologize to our users and will do better.”

Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 unveiled with a more powerful CPU and a better camera

Google Glass was one of the most futuristic and unique looking devices of its time and it may not have worked the way the company expected it to, but it surely did leave its mark. The first iteration of Google Glass, in a way had paved a way for smart devices. And now, the California based technology giant is coming up with a new version of its eye-wearable smart device – the Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2. The next iteration of Google Glass comes with an improved camera, USB Type-C port along with safety frames as well.

The next Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 is basically like a lightweight computer in front of the user’s eyes. Similar to the previous edition of Google Glass, the successor too comes with a transparent display which brings information in front of the user’s eyes. The successor of Google Glass comes with advanced Machine Learning (ML) capabilities which enables the significant power-saving and support for computer vision.

The upcoming Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 is powered by a multi-core Qualcomm’s XR1 CPU platform.

In a blog post, jay Kothari, the Project Lead of Glass at Google wrote, “Glass Enterprise Edition 2 helps businesses further improve the efficiency of their employees. Enterprise businesses interested in using Glass Enterprise Edition 2 can contact our sales team or our network of Glass Enterprise solution partners starting today. We’re excited to see how our partners and customers will continue to use Glass to shape the future of work.”

According to the company, the Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 is easier to develop and deploy. It will also come with support for Android Enterprise Mobile Device Management to the wearable smart device. Currently, the company hasn’t said anything about the price of the device. But if we look back to 2017, the first Google Glass Enterprise Edition was selling for $1,829 (approximately Rs 1.3 lakhs) by Streye. So, the price of the successor, the Google Glass Enterprise Edition 2 should be more than its predecessor.

It should be noted that the first Google Glass has been known to help scientists and other professionals in their works by making it easier. But earlier, the technology wasn’t advanced as it is today and people weren’t ready to accept such technology as part of their lives yet. But today, that is another matter.

Top 5 photo-storage services that you should know about

Smartphones are evolving, and with them, the camera size and the picture quality is also going up. Clicking pictures with smartphones has become a second nature of almost all smartphone users. But the photos take up space and if not managed correctly, they could eat up all the internal storage of the device. Almost all the smartphones come with limited storage option, but then, there is an option to invest in a microSD card. However, since some of the smartphones don’t support microSD card, the options for additional storage become very limited. There are many photo storing platforms available on the internet which offer varying options and features. Here we are listing down some of the best photo-storage services that you can find:

Google Photos

Google is bringing ‘Express backup’ and ‘Data Cap’ feature to Google Photos

Google Photos a very useful service by the technology giant and it is basically an online gallery of the smartphone pictures. The users can use their own Google ID to store their photos on Google Photos. Once it is uploaded to Google Photos, user can access their images from any part of the world. Even if the photos of the user’s smartphone are deleted, the photos on Google Photos will remain. The Google Photos also comes with an automatic backup option which lets the user take the backup of every photo he takes.

It too comes with plans and options – if the ‘High Quality’ option is chosen, Google will let the user store unlimited photos for free but the kick is, the photos should remain under 16MP in size. While the videos will be kept in 1080p resolution.

And if the ‘Original Quality’ option is chosen, Google Photos will let the user store the pictures to a certain point. Currently, Google gives the user 15GB of free storage which includes all its services. But once it exceeds, the user will have to pay for additional storage or delete some of his old photos or files to make the space.

Flickr

Flickr

Flickr is one of the oldest platforms to save and share photographs. But it should be noted that Flickr lets the user save only 1,000 photos, and if a user has exceeded this number then his/her older photos will be deleted. To store more photos on this platform, the user would have to pay for the storage service. The user will be charged $50.24 (approximately Rs 3501.85) per year for unlimited storage of photos without ads.

Photobucket

PhotoBucket

Photobucket is a platform where you can store as well as share photos. It offers free as well as paid photo storing and photo hosting. The platform helps the users to insert their photos to another website using direct image links. But the free plan limits some of the functions. Using the free plan, the users can upload as much as 2.5GB of images but it will come with lots of ads.

For paid services, Photobucket has Beginner plan at $4.48 which increases the upload limit to 25GB. There is an Intermediate plan at $6.48 (approximately Rs 451) per month which increases the upload limit to 250GB and the Expert plan which offers 1TB of photo upload limit. But it costs $11.48 (approximately Rs 800.18) per month.

500px

500px

500px is a Canadian company which is targeted more towards professional photographers. The platform offers the professional photographers a place to store, share, exhibit and license their pictures. But to store or exhibit pictures, 500px charges some amount. It also has a free or Basic plan which basically doesn’t cost anything but it offers limited options to the users who don’t really do anything useful. It allows the user 7 photo uploads in a period of 7 days. Other than that, the platform offers two paid services – Awesome and Pro, but there is also Adobe Creative Cloud Photography which can be added to the Pro plan for a yearly charge.

Amazon Photos

Amazon Photos

Lastly, Amazon.com as well has its own photo storing platform named Amazon Photos. The Amazon Prime members get additional benefits and other options along with free shipping. Amazon charges $119 (approximately Rs 8294) per year for its unlimited photo storage. The users can upload photos up to 48.82GB in size but it should be noted that for files more than 2GB in size the user will need Amazon Photos desktop application.
