Apple and Google rollout COVID-19 contact tracing tool for Android handsets and iPhones

0

In order to assist governments and health agencies across the globe in enabling contact tracing, Apple and Google had earlier announced that the tech giants will be together launching a comprehensive solution that includes application programming interfaces (APIs) and operating system-level technology. Now, Apple and Google’s Exposure Notifications technology is available to public health agencies to work more accurately, reliably and effectively across both Android phones and iPhones.

According to a joint statement from Apple and Google, “What we’ve built is not an app—rather public health agencies will incorporate the API into their own apps that people install. Our technology is designed to make these apps work better. Each user gets to decide whether or not to opt-in to Exposure Notifications; the system does not collect or use location from the device; and if a person is diagnosed with COVID-19, it is up to them whether or not to report that in the public health app. User adoption is key to success and we believe that these strong privacy protections are also the best way to encourage use of these apps.”

The tech giants further added that “this technology is in the hands of public health agencies across the world who will take the lead and we will continue to support their efforts.”

Up until now, public health officials have used contact tracing as one of the most effective techniques during the COVID-19 outbreak. Through this approach, public health officials contact, test, treat and advise people who may have been exposed to an affected person. However, one new element of contact tracing is Exposure Notifications: using privacy-preserving digital technology to tell someone they may have been exposed to the virus, as revealed in a joint statement issued by Apple and Google.

As per Apple and Google, “Exposure Notification has the specific goal of rapid notification, which is especially important to slowing the spread of the disease with a virus that can be spread asymptomatically.”

In an earlier announcement, the second step that Apple and Google will take in the coming months is to enable a broader Bluetooth-based contact tracing platform by building the functionality into the underlying platforms. “This is a more robust solution than an API and would allow more individuals to participate, if they choose to opt in, as well as enable interaction with a broader ecosystem of apps and government health authorities. Privacy, transparency, and consent are of utmost importance in this effort, and we look forward to building this functionality in consultation with interested stakeholders. We will openly publish information about our work for others to analyse,” as per the tech giants.

Over the last several weeks, Apple and Google have worked together by reaching out to public health officials, scientists, privacy groups and government leaders all over the world to get their input and guidance. The two companies believe that there has never been a more important moment to work together to solve one of the world’s most pressing problems. Emphasising on close cooperation and collaboration with developers, governments and public health providers, Google and Apple hope to harness the power of technology to help countries around the world slow the spread of COVID-19 and accelerate the return of everyday life.

Know how Google Photos makes it easy and secure to share personal moments with loved ones

0

Since the start of COVID-19 pandemic, sharing in Google Photos has registered a surge by 50 percent in some regions.  With this, Google has now introduced the default option to share an album with a specific person or people through the Google account. The tech giants stated that “This gives you more control over who’s added to the album.”

In a recent blog post, Google notified that it had launched direct sharing to make it easy to share one-off photos and videos in Google Photos by adding them to an ongoing, private conversation in the app last December.

According to the tech giant, the users will still have the option to share albums in Google Photos through a link, which you can embed in an email, text or blog to make it easy to share photos with people who don’t use Google Photos or have a Google account.

Moreover, the Google Photos users will have the option to turn link sharing on or off at any time and they can even decide if they want to allow other collaborators add photos to an album. Besides this, they will also be able to remove someone from the album. Mind you! One a person is removed from Google Photos, it will also remove the photos and videos they would have added.

With the new update, Google Photos users will find it easy and secure to share personal moments with their loved ones.

Google has also introduced new tools and a redesign of Chrome’s privacy and security settings on desktop to help the users stay safe and secured on the web. With this redesign, it’s easier to manage cookies. A user can choose if and how cookies are used by websites you visit, with options to block third-party cookies in regular or Incognito mode, and to block all cookies on some or all websites.

Moreover, Google has reorganized the controls into two distinct sections to make it easier to find the most sensitive website permissions in Site Settings: access to your location, camera or microphone, and notifications. A new section also highlights the most recent permissions activity.

In addition to this, at the top of Chrome settings, the users can see “You and Google” (previously “People”), where you can find sync controls with redesign of Chrome’s privacy and security settings. These controls put Google Chrome users in charge of what data is shared with the tech giant to store in their Google Account and made available across all your devices. Also, as many people regularly delete their browsing history, Google has now moved “Clear browsing data” control to the top of the Privacy & Security section.

Google Pixel 5 is most likely to be powered by Snapdragon 765 SoC: Report

Google is expected to arrive with its next generation of Google Pixel devices later this year. The Google Pixel 5 is going to succeed its existing Google Pixel 4 series that was launched last year in October. The predecessor comes with the flagship processor  Snapdragon 855 but this time the company is going to adopt a different approach. According to a report, Google Pixel 5 will be powered by the  Snapdragon 765 Soc instead of the latest flagship Snapdragon 865. However not much has been revealed about the device but it seems like the company might drawback its popular Pixel devices from the flagship market.

According to a report by XDA Developers, Google Pixel 5 smartphone will back out from the flagship market. It is most likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 in place of Snapdragon 865. To recall earlier this year in January three Pixel codes namely, Sunfish, Bramble, and Redfin were reported for the first time. The device with the codename Sunfish was said to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730 whereas Bramble, and Redfin was suggested to draw its power from  Qualcomm Snapdragon 765.

The Sunfish codename was believed to be Pixel 4a but there was no actual information related to the other two codenames Bramble and Redfin. These two codenames were speculated to be Google’s late 2020 flagship Pixel devices. At that time the publisher could not find any definitive links proclaiming that the Pixel 5 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765. But later on, both the codenames were spotter in the leaked Google Camera 7.4 APK.

The report says, “We weren’t comfortable definitively proclaiming that the Pixel 5 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 at the time just based on that code analysis, though. That’s because there was still only one piece of evidence linking “bramble” and “redfin” to the Snapdragon 765—our initial code-name discovery back in January. Now, though, we have another piece of evidence linking these two code-names to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 765.”

It was spotted on a pre-installed EUICCGoogle APK that was updated with a new reference to Google’s upcoming devices. He figured out that the  “modem_model_mappings_json” string now contained a new line for the “g7250” modem that is believed to be Google’s code-name for the Snapdragon 765G or Snapdragon 768G.

According to another report by Android Police Google Pixel 5 is claimed to ship Qualcomm Snapdragon 765 SoC. Now enough evidence has been gathered to support the claim that this time the company is going to turn the Pixel 5 into an upper-mid-range flagship. So it is expected to go cheaper and is rumoured to be priced around $699 (approx Rs 52,764) which is $100 (approx Rs 7,548) less expensive than its predecessor Pixel 4. The company is rumoured to be keeping out the Motion Sense technology which uses Project Soli radar chip from its upcoming series is another reason for the decline in the pricing of the device.

Truecaller is getting a new update for Android and iOS users globally, brings full-screen caller ID, Home tab and more

Swedish caller identification app Truecaller on Wednesday announced that it has rolled out updates for its Android and iOS users. The company says that with the new update it has given a new look to its platform for global users. The new version of Truecaller streamlines calls history, SMS and Instant Messages conversations into a single tab with the introduction of the new Home screen.  The Truecaller update brings two new features: a fresh full-screen caller ID and a Smart SMS allowing users to automatically categorize their SMS. According to the company, this will improve the communication experience for  Android and iOS users globally.

Sandeep Patil, Managing Director at Truecaller said, “Communication in 2020 is easier in many ways, but also complicated by the vast amount of ways to connect with people and information. There is a need to streamline this experience, we believe. In recent years we have seen how Truecaller has become your communication hub where all spam – calls and SMS – is identified and there is no need to switch between different apps for calls and messages. With this update, we want to make it, even more, easier for our users to have streamlined communication. At a time when we should be working to support each other in unity, it is unfortunate to see many scammers and fraudsters trying to capitalize on these difficult times. For over a decade now, Truecaller has been the main line of defence against such activity.”

Google Chrome brings new privacy and third-party cookie controls

The search giant Google Chrome has begun the rollout of new privacy and security settings for desktop for better control as well as safety. Moreover, it is also getting safety check tools, third party controls in Incognito mode, secure DNS and much more. The company’s head announced the release of the new tools for the desktop version of google chrome.

Google CEO, Sundar Pichai took to Twitter to announce the roll-out, hos tweet reads, “We’re rolling out new tools + redesigned privacy & security settings in on desktop to help you better control your safety on the web: a safety check tool, 3rd party cookie controls in Incognito mode, Enhanced Safe Browsing, Secure DNS & more.”

Let’s have a look at what the latest Google Chrome update brings for the users:

  • Now you can manage cookies by choosing if and how are used by websites you visit. You also get the choice to block third-party cookies in regular or Incognito mode and to block all cookies on some or all websites.
  • The company has now reorganised the controls into two distinct sections to allow the users to search for most sensitive website permissions such as access to location, camera or microphone, and notifications.
  • Earlier at the top of Chrome settings, there was  “People” to help you find sync controls. In place of that, you will now see “You and Google” allowing you to take charge of what data is shared with Google to store in your Google Account and made available across all your devices.
  • With the new update  “Clear browsing data” has been repositioned to the top of the Privacy & Security section.

New safety tools

The new Google Chrome update brings in new tools that will advise you if the passwords you’ve asked Chrome to remember have been compromised, and if so, how to fix them. Now the users will be warned by Google’s technology before you visit any dangerous site or download a harmful app or extension if Safe Browsing is turned off. Now you will be altered and will be advised how to remove if any malicious extensions are installed.

Third-party cookie controls in Incognito mode

Third-party cookie controls in Incognito mode

The users browsing history and information entered in forms or browser cookies are not saved in Incognito mode. Chrome will now allow users to block third-party cookies in the incognito mode. Also, they can also allow third-party cookies for specific sites by clicking the “eye” icon in the address bar.

Pin extensions to the toolbar

Now the users will see a new puzzle icon on the top right corner of your extensions on your toolbar allowing you more control over data extensions you can access on sites you visit. You can now pin your favourite extensions to the toolbar.

Upgraded security

With the new update, Chrome is getting two major security upgrades Enhanced Safe Browsing and Secure DNS. For protection from phishing, malware and other web-based threats you can turn on Enhanced Safe Browsing. When it is turned on Chrome can check whether pages and downloads are dangerous by sending information about them to Google Safe Browsing.

Whereas with the Secure DNS your security and privacy while browsing the web will be improved. According to the company, while you are accessing a website, your browser first needs to determine which server is hosting it, using a step known as a “DNS (Domain Name System) lookup.” Chrome’s Secure DNS feature uses DNS-over-HTTPS to encrypt this step, thereby helping prevent attackers from observing what sites you visit or sending you to phishing websites. By default, Chrome will automatically upgrade you to DNS-over-HTTPS if your current service provider supports it. You can also configure a different secure DNS provider in the Advanced security section, or disable the feature altogether.

Xiaomi launched MIUI 12 with improved privacy and a revamped UI design: Details

Xiaomi has finally launched its 12th iteration of Android-based custom operating system MIUI 12. It comes with a slew of changes as well as improved privacy features and revamped UI as well as wallpapers. The MIUI 12 has been released for the global market including India. The company will begin the rollout from next month in phases.

To recall the company released its latest OS in the Chinese markets a few weeks back and it has launched the much-awaited MIUI 12 for the global market which marches up with the Chinese version. Xiaomi will begin the final roll out later in June but the beta version of the operating system will start rolling out from next week. Let’s take a look at its new features.

Privacy features

This time the company has focused on bringing new privacy tools. The company says that MIUI 12 grants the user stronger control over permissions which takes privacy protection to the next level. With the launch of the new version now an individual app will ask for permission. You will now get options such as While using the app” and “Notify” for permission. This allows the user to manage apps request sensitive permissions such as location, permissions to access the camera, microphone, contacts, call history, calendar and storage are only allowed under “While using the app” mode. Now the users can clear away their location information and metadata before they send their pictures.

Super Wallpaper

Revamped Interface Design

The company has also aimed its attention at giving a new look to its UI design and nuanced system animations. With the use of Mi Render Engine, you will get a smoother UI experience. It brings refreshed design that is inspired by nature from the opening and closing of apps to the smooth switching between apps. The company says that with the nuanced system animations, MIUI 12 introduces a lifelike OS experience where every detail becomes tangibly real.

The MIUI 12 brings in  “Super Wallpaper” that represents iconic planetary landforms based on NASA’s official imagery. This has been spread out to Always-on display, Home screen, and Lock screen.

Other features and improvements

With the release of MIUI 12 multitasking will become manageable. Now a global floating window has been introduced that allows the users to navigate the system using full-screen gestures, floating windows can facilitate multitasking and save the trouble of constantly switching between apps. The floating windows can be moved, closed and resized by simple gestures applied to the action bar. For instance, when a video is playing the users will now be able to read a received text and can also respond to it without having to pause a video.

MIUI 12 also draws enhanced screen casting functionality allowing the users to cast documents, apps, videos, and games with a single tap. According to the company, the windows that are being cast can be minimized at any time. The option to cast items with the screen off decreases power consumption and hiding private items doesn’t allow floating notifications and incoming calls to appear on external monitors.

In addition to this MIUI 12 supports an Ultra battery saver mode, Dark mode, App drawers and more. The company plans to begin its first phase of the rollout from June to Mi 9, Mi 9T, Mi 9T Pro, Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro.

Facebook Shops now launched to help businesses of all sizes prepare for future

0

With many small businesses are struggling and with stores closing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, entrepreneurs are finding ways to bring their businesses online. Now, Facebook Shops have been rolled out to empower business owner and to make shopping seamless

“Facebook Shops make it easy for businesses to set up a single online store for customers to access on both Facebook and Instagram. Creating a Facebook Shop is free and simple. Businesses can choose the products they want to feature from their catalogue and then customize the look and feel of their shop with a cover image and accent colours that showcase their brand. This means any seller, no matter their size or budget, can bring their business online and connect with customers wherever and whenever it’s convenient for them,” the Mark Zuckerberg-led company revealed in a blog post.

Wondering where you can find Facebook Shops? Well, people can discover Facebook Shops on a business’ Facebook Page or Instagram profile as well as through stories or ads. From there, they can browse the full collection, save products they’re interested in and place an order — either on the business’ website or without leaving the app if the business has enabled checkout in the US.

Facebook Shops work just like a physical store. If you need to ask someone for help while being in Facebook Shops, you’ll be able to message a business through WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct to get support, track deliveries and more. Moreover, Facebook also revealed that users will be able to view a business’ shop and make purchases right within a chat in WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram Direct in the coming days.

In a blog post, Facebook revealed, Facebook Shops “will be more widely available in the coming months. You can learn more about how we built Shops with privacy in mind here. We’re also investing in features across our apps like Instagram Shop, live shopping and more that will be integrated with Facebook Shops to help customers discover products they’re interested in and make purchasing easier.”

Let’s check out what Instagram Shop is all about. According to Facebook, This summer, starting in the US, we’re introducing Instagram Shop, a new way to discover and buy products you love in Instagram Explore. You can get inspired by collections from @shop, browse selections from your favourite brands and creators, filter by categories like beauty and home, and purchase the looks you love all in one place. And later this year, we’re adding a new shop tab in the navigation bar, so you can get to Instagram Shop in just one tap.”

Asserting that Facebook-owned apps users have been using live video across its social media platforms to showcase products for years, from shoe stores announcing new sneakers to beauty influencers trying on different lipsticks, Facebook notified, “Now, we’re making it easier to shop for products in real time. Soon, sellers, brands and creators will be able to tag products from their Facebook Shop or catalog before going live and those products will be shown at the bottom of the video so people can easily tap to learn more and purchase.”

Initially Facebook Shops is being tested with businesses on Facebook and Instagram, and the social networking giant would soon roll it out more broadly in the coming months.

Besides this, Facebook is also testing ways to make it easier to earn rewards with businesses you love by enabling you to connect your loyalty programs, like the points program at your local cafe, to your Facebook account. “You’ll be able to easily see and keep track of your points and rewards. And we’re exploring ways to help small businesses create, manage and surface a loyalty program on Facebook Shops,” the social networking giant mentioned.

In order to provide small businesses the assistance they need, Facebook is also working more closely with partners like Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, ChannelAdvisor, CedCommerce, Cafe24, Tienda Nube and Feedonomics. Mind you! Facebook stated that “these organizations offer powerful tools to help entrepreneurs start and run their businesses and move online. Now they’ll help small businesses build and grow their Facebook Shops and use our other commerce tools.”

The study by Andrea Pozza and her team from University of Siena and Scotte University Hospital has notified, “Online romance scams are a modern form of fraud that have spread in Western societies along with the development of social media. Through a fictitious Internet profile, the scammer develops a romantic relationship with the victim for 6-8 months, building a deep emotional bond with the aim of extorting economic resources in a manipulative dynamic.”

The research revealed that there are two notable features that might lead to underestimation of the number of cases:

  1. Firstly, the double trauma of losing money and a relationship
  2. Secondly, the victim’s shame upon discovery of the scam

As per the research by Pozza, “Sixty-three percent of social media users and 3% of the general population report having been a victim at least once. Women, middle-aged people, and individuals with higher tendencies to anxiety, romantic idealization of affective relations, impulsiveness and susceptibility to relational addiction are at higher risk of being victims of the scam. Understanding the psychological characteristics of victims and scammers will allow at-risk personality profiles to be identified and prevention strategies to be developed.”

Over the last decade, nearly about 1400 dating sites/chats have been created in North America alone, the researcher added. Solely in the UK, 23 percent of Internet users have met someone online with whom they had a romantic relationship for a certain period and that even 6 percent of married couples met through the web.

As per a recent report by Research and Markets, the global online dating market has witnessed continuous growth in the past few years and is expected to augment even further during the forecast period (2020-2024). The market is expected to be driven by various growth-enhancing factors such as rising internet penetration, increasing smartphone penetration, rising single adults population, changing perception of online dating, etc.

Soon, a reusable sensor could detect COVID-19 in just 60 seconds

0

With the COVID-19 pandemic grappling the world, ‘testing’ is the new mantra to contain the outbreak of the coronavirus. Now, it seems that people could soon use a reusable sensor to detect the COVID-19 in mere 60 second. In order to develop a portable, reusable coronavirus sensor that people can always carry with them, University of Utah electrical and computer engineering professor Massood Tabib-Azar has received a $200,000 National Science Foundation Rapid Response Research (RAPID) grant.

The sensor, about the size of a quarter, works with a cellphone and can detect COVID-19 in just 60 seconds. As Tabib-Azar has already developed the technology—and a prototype—to detect the Zika virus, an official blog post on the University of Utah website stated that “he said he could have a prototype of the new COVID-19 sensor for clinical trials in two to three months.”

According to Massood Tabib-Azar: “It can be made to be a standalone device, but it can also be connected to a cellphone. Once you have it connected either wirelessly or directly, you can use the cellphone software and processor to give a warning if you have the virus.”

In April this year, Tabib-Azar along with Subhashish Dolai got two papers published in IEEE Sensors Journal. Mind you! The technology, which is based on a sensor Tabib-Azar first began developing for the NSF about a year ago to detect the Zika virus, involves just a drop of saliva and can produce results in a minute. Tabib-Azar is now converting the same technology to work with COVID-19.

In an official blog post on the University of Utah website, it was revealed, “The sensor would use single-strand DNA called aptamers in the sensor that would attach to the proteins in the COVID-19 virus molecule if it is present. A person would plug the small sensor into the cellphone’s power jack and launch an app made for the device. To test for the presence of the virus, the user would place a drop of saliva on the sensor, and the results would appear on the phone.”

Moreover, this sensor could also test for the virus on the surface of something, like a table or desk, by brushing a swab on the surface and then on the sensor, the blog post added. Besides this, it was also notified that this amazing technology by Tabib-Azar could help detect the presence of COVID-19 in floating microscopic particles in the air in enclosed spaces such as an elevator.

Mind you! Up until now the virus is not considered not airborne, but numerous researches are being done to discover if minute particles of the virus can hang in floating droplets in the air. Therefore, “if the virus is present, the DNA strands in the sensor would bind to the virus’ proteins and electrical resistance is measured in the device, signaling a positive result,” the blog post added

Now if you wondering about the structure of this sensor that could help you detect the COVID-19 pandemic, Tabib-Azar has stated that the sensor would include an array of tiny devices inside it. Each of these tiny devices will come fitted with a DNA strand that looks for a different protein. A specific combination of proteins would be unique to just COVID-19, he added.

Tabib-Azar further added that “By increasing the number of devices and single-strand DNA, we can increase the sensor’s accuracy and reduce the false positives and false negatives.”

What’s more interesting is that the sensor is designed to be reusable as it can destroy the previous sample on it by producing a small electrical current that could heat up and remove or disintegrate the virus. All that this the entire process would require is a little battery power from the smartphones, said Tabib-Azar.

The researcher at the University of Utah also talked about “another possible method would involve putting the saliva sample on disposable sheets that are placed on top of the sensor like a sticky note. This would decrease cross-contamination on the sensor and eliminate the need to heat up and destroy the sample afterward.”

In addition to these impressive testing techniques, it was stated that researchers across the world can get a clearer and more accurate picture of where hotspots are with big outbreaks of the virus the device also can be designed to upload the results to a central server that maps out positive results in an area.
