Netflix mobile-plan launched for Rs 199 per month: Key details

Popular video-streaming service Netflix has today announced a new mobile-only plan for India. With this new plan, Netflix wants to cater to the audience that only watches its content on smartphones or tablets. Netflix’s mobile-plan is more affordable than its other existing plans and this shows that the video-streaming service is eyeing to take on the likes of Amazon’s Prime Video and Hotstar, that enjoy a lot of popularity in the country.

Users would only have to pay Rs 199 per month for the mobile-only plan by Netflix. We should mention that this is less than half of its other monthly plan that starts at Rs 499. As a part of the plan, the users will get only one concurrent stream and only SD quality will be supported on it. There would not be any ads present as a part of the plan. Interested customers would have the option of paying for Netflix’s mobile-plan via any credit card or debit card. The

Netflix has said that the mobile-plan has been ‘Made for India’ so India is the first and only country to get it. Netflix did say that the mobile-plan will roll out to other South East Asian countries later. However, it did not specify when it plans to make this plan global and exactly which countries will be getting it.

Considering that people who access internet services via smartphones in India have grown tremendously since mobile data became affordable after Reliance Jio’s entry, the move by Netflix seems to make perfect sense. It is also worth mentioning that there are scores of people in India who only access the internet via their handsets, and Netflix’s mobile plan will be effective in catering to that audience.

It is worth mentioning that is you opt for this plan; you would not have the option of screencasting Netflix content on TV. The only way to watch it will be via smartphones and tablets.

Netflix 4

We should mention that this plan has been under testing for a while now. However, while it was being tested, it cost Rs 250. Now, the company seems to have reconsidered its decision and hence, the price has been reduced even further. This will, of course, help Netflix compete with Amazon’s Prime Video and Hotstar. While Hostar costs Rs 299 per month, Amazon’s video and music streaming services are bundled with its Prime membership that bears a price tag of Rs 129 per month.

Speaking at the launch of the new mobile-plan, Ajay Arora, Director, Product Innovation, Netflix said, “Our members in India watch more on their mobiles than members anywhere else in the world – and they love to download our shows and films. We believe this new plan will make Netflix even more accessible and better suit for people who like to watch on their smartphones or tablets – both on the go and at home.”

Snapchat’s daily active users go up by 13 million

Photo-messaging app Snapchat has added 13 million daily active users in the last quarter, according to its parent company Snap Inc. With the new additions, the total number of people across the globe who use the app have gone up to 203 million, and it should be mentioned that this is the highest number that Snap has seen since it went public.

The growth is a clear indication of the fact that Snap has invested in product features to attract a more global user base has actually paid off. Some credit should also be given to the viral face filters that Snapchat got in the last few months. According to the company, around 7 to 9 million people joined after the face filters were introduced and the remaining 4-6 million can be attributed to the company other efforts.

We should also mention that an updated and optimized version of Snapchat’s Android app was released last year. The company rolled it out as Android users had been complaining about a lagged experience for users. Considering that a major chunk of the world’s population uses Android smartphone, the redesigned app was a very welcome move by Snapchat.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel revealed today that with the redesigned app, users have been sending 7% more snaps as compared to what they did earlier. It is also worth pointing out that the company is also making efforts to get Snapchat accepted outside of English-speaking countries. In order to manage data costs, the company is said to be partnering other global telecommunication companies that have been serving more than a billion people. However, he did not mention the companies that Snap has been working with.

snapchat features

In 2019, Snapchat got support for eight new languages including Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi, Gujarati, Vietnamese, and Urdu. It should be noted that more than 750 million people use these languages to communicate. Since most of these languages are spoken in India, it can be assumed that Snapchat looks at the country as an important market for itself.

Snap has said that it is optimistic about the fact that this growth in terms of user engagement will continue into the next year. The company has also announced that its Snapchat Stories would be coming to Tinder and Houseparty and that it is working to build a video game platform and a roster of original programs. The company has also said that it has developed new AR filters that will make the Eiffel Tower puke rainbows.

Apple rolls out an update to fix GPS bug in old iPhones and iPads

Do you own an iPhone or iPad that was launched before 2012? It is recommended for you to check your device for an iOS update to ensure that it keeps on showing you the accurate date, time and location.

Cupertino based technology giant Apple has started rolling out a new software update to some select old iPhones and iPads. The update has the fix for an issue that has been affecting the global GPS of these devices. The problem is being termed at the Week Number Rollover issue, and it arises when GPS systems record the weeks as a 10-bit figure. So, when they hit the week number 1,024, their count is automatically reset.

This problem has been surfacing in some of the old devices by Apple and it is speculated to be the same as the Millennium/Y2K bug. To recall, the Millennium/Y2K bug was also caused because the date count was resetting automatically.

While in the past we have seen GPS makers like Garmin and TomTom issue patches for this particular problem. Now, Apple is doing the same for the iPhones and iPads that are affected by the issue. It has been reported that the Week Number Rollover issue first started affecting devices on April 6 this tear. However, Apple has said that its devices will not be affected until November 3.

We should mention that the new smartphones and tablets that have the latest version of iOS installed on them are not encountering this issue, and now, Apple is rolling out the same protection against this problem to its older devices too.

For iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPhone, the software update has the version number iOS 10.3.4, and for iPhone 4S, first-generation iPad Mini, iPad 2 and third-generation iPad, it has the version number iOS 9.3.6. Apple has also given a statement that says that the Wi-Fi online iPads or the iPod Touch will not be affected.

In case you have an old iPad or iPhone with you, you must update it. According to Apple’s website, here’s how you can do this:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap General, then tap About.
  • Look for the number next to Software Version.

Apple’s website also says, “If you don’t update to the newest version of iOS available for your device before November 3, 2019, some models might not be able to maintain an accurate GPS position. And functions that rely on the correct date and time—such as syncing with iCloud and fetching email—might not work.”

Pinterest has rolled out a more ‘compassionate search’ for people in distress

0

Pinterest is very different from other social networking websites. It has 250 million users, but rather than spending their time to spread content that ends up making someone sad, they spend their time making boards of the content that makes them happy. And when its users search the platform for something depressing or sad, the company does step in. However, now it will be doing more in such cases.

Today, Pinterest has rolled out a new set of “emotional well-being activities” that will offer a “compassionate search” for its users who search for topics that make it clear that they are going through stress or are feeling unhappy. These exercises have been developed in partnership with Stanford School of Medicine’s Brainstorm lab and one of them asks such users on the platform to take some deep breaths.

In a blog post, Pinterest said, “These guided activities were created with the help of emotional health experts at Brainstorm, the Stanford Lab for Mental Health Innovation, and with advice from Vibrant Emotional Health and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Each practice offers people an interactive way to try to improve their mood––from tools to help someone relax to self-compassion exercises. “

The company also adds, “People will see a prompt to explore these resources when they search for things like ‘stress quotes,’ ‘work anxiety” or other terms that indicate they might be feeling down. The experience is not meant to replace professional care, but it may help someone if they need support.”

Till now, if a user searched for words like ‘suicide’, ‘bulimia’ or ‘depression’, they are pointed towards some helpline numbers. Users in different countries are shown different numbers that are available for them locally. This is the company’s way of doing its bit to provide help. In fact, the platform does not even show any search results for some controversial topics. We should mention that there are hardly any other social media platforms that have undertaken so many steps.

Pinterest compassionate search 2

Speaking about it to Wired, Pinterest’s product manager Annie Ta said that the company calls this idea as ‘Compassionate Search’. She also added, “We didn’t just decide to throw this in the app. We decided to put it in the app because people are already searching for these things so much.”

Pinterest says that it does not want to be seen as a social network. We personally think that it is a good thing to have a platform like this which is so different from other social media websites that have so much hate content. A number of such platforms are also coming up with their own ways and techniques to combat such content, but then, Pinterest does manage to leave them all behind.

10 PUBG Mobile settings you can adjust to get the chicken dinner easily

PUBG Mobile is a game that involves a strategy to survive till the end. While there are a number of tricks and tips that are available on the internet, just adjusting a few settings may help you get closer to your chicken dinner. Here, we have listed down 10 PUBG Mobile settings that you can adjust to get your chicken dinner with ease. Take a look:

Enable Lean options

PUBG Mobile settings

Lean shooting can prove to be extremely useful in PUBG Mobile. You can scout for enemies or shot opportunities while making sure that you are not spotted. Just enable ‘Peek & Fire’ and then go and enable Lean options in Settings. Select Open Scope > Hold To Lean to activate your ADS automatically.

Set the frame rate at maximum

game settings

The higher the frame rate, the better the game would perform and the easier it would be to spot and shoot your enemies. It is worth noticing that some Android smartphone models may not show some frame rate options in PUBG Mobile. In such a case, just go with the highest one. However, you must always adjust the game quality to ‘smooth’ or ‘balanced’ with this.

For fewer control errors, enable 3D controls

PUBG settings

If you are someone who often presses the wrong buttons, you would find this option to be useful. However, you must practice it after enabling this in PUBG Mobile because it takes a while to get used to it.

For auto adjust frame rates, disable the graphics

PUBG Mobile 10

If you disable anti-aliasing and auto-adjust graphics, it will make sure that the frame rate of your game does not fluctuate and will also ensure that your device’s processor is not overworked.

Aim accurately by changing the colour crosshair

changing the colour crosshair

While changing your crosshair’s colour may seem like a small change, it can lead to a big change in PUBG Mobile. It will allow you to aim better, and even shoot at enemies more accurately.

For better performance, you may have to lower graphics

lower graphics

By lowering the graphics, you would only be affecting the texture of trees and some other structures in-game. If you couple lowering of graphics with higher frame rates, you will be able to spot enemies very easily in PUBG Mobile.

This colour style will help you spot enemies quickly

PUBG Mobile has four colour styles to choose from. If you want to sport your enemies more quickly than you do now, pick the brightest option that has the highest contrast.

Use Walls before adjusting aim sensitivity

adjusting aim sensitivity

Players are recommended to adjust sensitivity settings according to their personal preference. Focus on a wall in-game and adjust cross-hair to see which sensitivity level is the apt one for you. Use only the one that you are comfortable with.

Enable auto-loot if you have just started playing

Enable auto-loot

If you are a beginner in PUBG Mobile, you should enable the option of auto-loot. It will be easier for you to play the game by enabling this and you will have one less thing to worry about. Low-level items will be swapped out automatically with higher-level items with this setting.

Turn up the volume

increase volume

Whenever your enemies will be around, you will be able to hear footsteps and gunshots. However, you can always make sure you hear it better by turning up the SFX volume. This will help you in locating your opponents better.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 teased on Flipkart days ahead of launch

Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is all set to be launched officially in less than two weeks’ time. Ahead of its launch, e-commerce website Flipkart has started teasing the device as Samsung‘s next flagship. In addition to this, a number of new details have surfaced online about the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Plus. A number of reports have thrown some light on what to expect from the handsets in terms of battery, display and colour and storage variants. The latest report shows that Galaxy Note 10’s updated S Pen will have support for air gesture and the selfie camera of the device will support Night Mode.

Samsung has set up a dedicated page for its upcoming Galaxy Note 10 flagship handsets on Flipkart. On the page, August 8 (India time) has been highlighted as the event date for Galaxy Unpacked event date and it also has a teaser that highlights the S Pen of the device. While nothing new has been revealed by Flipkart’s teaser, it does confirm that Samsung has partnered with Flipkart to sell the Galaxy Note 10 devices.

A new report has surfaced on TechManiacs that says that Samsung Galaxy Note 10 sports a 6.3-inch display that comes with a Full HD+ resolution. We should mention that a prior report claimed the same size of display but said that the mobile will come with a QHD+ resolution and HDR 10+ support. The Galaxy Note 10+, on the other hand, is said to feature a 6.8-inch full HD+ display, according to the recent report, but this is different from the 6.7-inch screen that was reported about earlier.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ will reportedly arrive in gradient white and black colour options, while the regular device will be made available in Red colour too. Both are said to have a 3.5mm headphone jack. The new report also says that Galaxy Note 10 will house a 3,500mAh battery and its elder sibling will pack a 4,300mAh battery. We should mention that 3,500mAh battery is smaller than Galaxy Note 9’s cell. Also, another leak has suggested a 4,500mAh battery for Galaxy Note 10+.

The report also says that Galaxy Note 10+ will house 12GB of RAM and its base variant will have 256GB of internal storage, and this is in-line with a previous report. Another key detail that has been revealed that S Pen will come with support for gestures and will produce sounds like a highlight marker while the user jots things down.

The two handsets are also tipped to come with night mode for the selfie camera and will also have support for the live focus feature. In addition to this, the smartphones will also have support for an audio zoom feature that was present on a few LG phones. While Samsung Galaxy Note 10 is said to come with support for 25W charging, the Galaxy Note 10+ will reportedly support 45W charging. However, it is worth adding that previous reports claim that both the devices will have support for 25W charging.

PUBG Mobile: Everything you need to know about the India Bonus Challenge

0

Have you been a part of the PUBG Mobile’s India Bonus Challenge yet? If not, then this is a challenge you must try out as it has been garnering a lot of appreciation from the gaming community for the kind of unique opportunities that it offers. With the challenge, players have the opportunity to convert battle coins to the in-game currency that is called UC.

If you are familiar with PUBG Mobile, you would know that UC can be used to buy outfits, skins and make other in-game purchases. As a part of PUBG Mobile India Bonus Challenge, players will get to score higher points on their kills, so earning UC in this manner is much quicker.

Overview of the PUBG Mobile India Bonus Challenge

Indian players can access the bonus challenge at the Esports tab on the main screen of PUBG Mobile. Here, players can go and register for the bonus tournament. It is worth noticing that this is a weekly challenge and it goes live on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 12 pm to 6 pm IST. The only requirement for the PUBG Mobile challenge is that in order to participate, players need to be above level 20 and should be between Bronze V and Conqueror rank.

Details on how it works

Firstly, this is technically not a free challenge. Every PUBG Mobile player who participates would at least have to pay around 10 UC, 20 UC and 30 UC to access Novice, Adept, and Expert modes respectively, based on their skills. However, in order to make it easier for players to access this challenge, even when running short on UC, the game registration will let players finish a Novice guide first.

Once they complete this, PUBG Mobile players will get a bonus of 100 battle coins and one voucher to register for the Novice round. In the Novice round, players would have the opportunity to earn 300 points and 15 points per kill. This is usually enough to get players to begin trying their luck as many numbers of times as they wish and while doing this, they can use the earned UC to buy their fills.

The nitty-gritty of the process

We should mention that PUBG Mobile players need to click on the Register button and even specify the mode that they wish to access. So, if you are playing with the novice voucher, then you would have to choose the Novice mode. In the next prompt, the players receive need to begin matching, and they would be able to see an option with Register again. This time when you hit the Register button, the entrance UC is immediately deducted, and the matching process will begin.

In case the matching goes on for more than 5 mins or if it fails for some reason, the deducted registration fee (in the form of UCs) gets refunded. From here, players can continue to play the game as they do with a higher stake in-store and better chances of earning big, along with the usual chicken dinner. The players can choose to play the game in solo or squad mode. The only difference in the squad mode is that the players need to Match with their teams first, before proceeding to register/match and begin the game.

We should also mention that the returns are higher for solo mode as the risk is higher. On the other hand, the squad mode is considerably safer as a player is not alone in PUBG Mobile, and the chances of getting the chicken dinner are more. Each week the battle shop gets upgraded, offering players more variety in inventory and more reasons to play the challenge. The PUBG Mobile India Bonus Challenge is a unique offering and players will find the rewards highly attractive.

Apple rolls out new iOS, watchOS and HomePod updates: Here’s everything new

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple has started rolling out software updates across iOS, watchOS and the HomePod. The company is expected to introduce some new features in fall this year. According to the update release notes, the iOS 12.4 release will be introducing a new “iPhone migration” option that will get the ability to transfer data wirelessly and migrate it directly from an old iPhone to a new one.

The company has already had an option of wirelessly transferring data between two iOS devices, however, it depends completely on iCloud for doing this. With the new method, users will be able to transfer app data, device settings, photos and more directly from one iPhone to another. However, it is worth pointing out that the apps would still need to be downloaded from the App Store after the migration of data is completed.

Another very important addition that has been made is that passwords are now included in the data that is transferred from an old iPhone to a new one. Earlier, passwords were not saved as a part of the iCloud backups and Apple always cited security and privacy concerns for this. Prior to this, there was always an option of encrypting a device backup using iTunes to save all the passwords, but then, Apple wanted to give its users an option with which they could do this without using a computer.

In addition to this, iOS 12.4 also enhances the browsing on Apple News Plus by making it easier to access all the publications that are a part of it from the top of the News Plus section. With today’s update, Apple has also fixed the flaw in the Walkie Talkie feature on Apple Watch. We should mention that the feature was taken down after a vulnerability had surfaced that allowed people to listen to another person’s iPhone secretly without their consent. While Apple maintained that the security loophole was not misused by anyone, it also took it down to fix it. The latest watchOS update that is being rolled out by the company — version 5.3 — also takes the support for EKG feature and regular heartbeat detection to Canada and Singapore.

Last, but not the least, Apple says that going forward, its HomePod smart speaker will begin working in Japan and Taiwan.

Have you got the new update for your device yet? If yes, then which is the upgrade that you like the most? Let us know in the comments below!

WhatsApp starts rolling out on KaiOS globally

KaiOS, the operating system that is present on various feature phones including last year’s Nokia 8110 4G, has finally got an official version of WhatsApp. The app is now available to download via KaiStore. However, the device must have 256MB or 512MB of RAM to have support for WhatsApp. The app will come pre-installed in select feature phones starting Q3 2019. The KaiOS version of the app has support for messaging as well as calling and it comes with end-to-end encryption like Android and iOS.

We should mention that WhatsApp has gradually been released for select KaiOS devices over the past one year. JioPhone handset, which also runs KaiOS, got support for the app last year. Nokia 8110 also got support for WhatsApp for KaiOS in April this year, however, that was only limited to India. Now, the app is available on the KaiOS feature phones globally. WhatsApp is now available for seven KaiOS devices including JioPhone, JioPhone 2, Cat B35, Doro 7060, MTN Smart, Nokia 8110 4G, and the Orange Sanza.

In global markets, phones like Nokia 8110 4G are considered to be devices that you buy when you want to get away from smartphones and modern apps. However, the same is not true in developing countries where people like these phones because they are affordable, simple to use and have a long battery life. In most such countries, WhatsApp is a very key tool for communication. Going forward, people would be cut off from the rest of the world only because they have a preference for feature phones over smartphones.

We should mention that KaiOS is a lightweight operating system that is available on a few feature phones. The operating system has started out as a fork of Firefox OS after Firefox gave up on the idea of creating an operating system for phones. Since then, the operating system has got an investment from technology giant Google, and it supports voice-typing that is powered by Google Assistant.

Nokia 8110 4g

Speaking of Nokia 8110 4G or ‘banana’ phone, it is the successor to the iconic Nokia 8110 and was initially showcased at MWC 2018. The feature phone runs KaiOS skinned with Smart Feature and has support for Google apps including Assistant, Search and Maps. Another key highlight of the phone is the revamped Snake game. Now, Nokia 8110 phone has got support for WhatsApp globally. The dual SIM phone features a 2.45-inch QVGA display and is powered by 1.1GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor clubbed with 512MB of RAM. The device offers 4GB of onboard storage. It features a 2MP primary camera and has an LED flash. Nokia 8110 4G houses a 1,500mAh battery that is touted to have a standby time of 25 days and 9.32 hours of talktime on VoLTE.

2020 iPhone models to sport 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate displays

0

Apple has scores of loyalists everywhere in the world. Maybe that’s the reason that rumors about the iPhones that it will be launching next year have already started pouring in. The internet is already flooded with reports about the iPhone models the company will be launching next year. According to a new report that has surfaced online, the 2020 models of iPhone is likely to come with gaming-centric features. A famous tipster has also said that the new models of iPhone will come with displays that have a refresh rate of 120Hz.

A tweet shared by Ice Universe reveals that the 2020 iPhones are likely to come with a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate screens. In addition to this, it has also been revealed that the company is having a discussion with LG and Samsung as they have been the biggest supplier of OLED displays to the Cupertino giant.

The tweet reads, “Apple is considering a switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rate screen on the iPhone in 2020, and is discussing with Samsung and LG.”

It is assumed that if the smartphone maker is considering to use the switchable 60Hz/120Hz refresh rated and the new models of Apple’s iPhone would be able to toggle to a 60Hz refresh rate. By doing this, the 2020 iPhones will reduce power consumption to normal when the user is only viewing motionless images on the screen. But this is not the first time when the company would launch a device with a 120Hz display.

Last year, the company released the 10.5-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models that used ProMotion technology on its display that vigorously delivers up to 120Hz of refresh rate for smooth scrolling and motion as well.

Another report also suggests that Apple is planning to put in the 3D sensing camera setup on the rear panel of the 2020 iPhone. With this, the user will be able to capture a more detailed picture with the use of AR-based applications.

This year, Apple will be launching the successors of iPhone XR, iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max that are expected to come with reverse wireless charging feature and A13 processor. This time, the company is also considering to add with extra cameras. It is rumoured that the 2019 iPhone XR will be featuring a dual rear camera set up and the other premium models will get a triple rear camera set up placed in a square-shaped unit.  A report has also claimed that the iPhone XR successor will come with an LCD screen while iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will sport OLED displays.
