Twitter to begin deleting inactive accounts from December 11

If you’re someone who created a Twitter account for the sake of it and haven’t used it in a while, beware your account might be removed. Twitter has begun notifying users who have not logged in for more than 6 months. Account closures will not be happening overnight but over a period of many months.

This is to free username’s which are held by inactive users, which can be later given to new users who want a similar username. Make sure to log in soon, though it is not necessary that you have to make or retweet a tweet, signing in should be enough to prevent your Twitter account from being deleted.

The purge cleaning will begin on December 11 2019, continuing over a long period of time.

Twitter explains the purge as an effort to present accurate and credible information for users who depend on the data from Twitter. It also makes the app more user-friendly by saving time while looking for a specific user or tweet.

The downside of the purge will be for the deceased or those unable to login to their accounts and hence all of their activity on Twitter. Memorable posts will no longer be available if the account that made the tweet is deleted. This also might affect famous pages who have recently fallen into silence for at least over 6 months.

Many accounts which have not been active since the last 6 months are receiving emails about their inactivity and requests to sign in to prevent the deletion of their account. The email also asks current users to agree to the new terms, privacy policy and cookie use, this will allow users to get the best experience out of Twitter. Twitter has also rolled out a new feature where usernames with less than 5 characters can no longer register on Twitter.

Twitter was recently in the news because of a malicious SDK that enabled hackers to access private user data, which can be given to third party organisations. Twitter however made a statement and said that affected users were informed and that they have increased security closing loopholes that may have caused this data breach.

Beat Games, the studio behind Beat Saber bought by Facebook

Facebook Inc has now taken over Beat Games, the creators of the Beat Saber game as an independent gaming studio. The Beat Saber game combines music, lightsabers and dancing into one for a secret price. Beat games will be joining Facebook’s very own Oculus gaming studio.  The studio is based out of Prague and it will continue to be situated there. The studio will still continue developing the Best Sabre game but the tech will be used in other games/apps by Facebook.

This merger means that Oculus now owns one of the industry’s most popular games as Oculus is trying to push out VR Gaming to a larger section of consumers. For the unknown, Oculus was bought by Facebook way back in 2014 for a sum of 2 billion USD.

Mike Verdu, the director of Content and the head of VR and augmented-reality content at Facebook, gave clues in his blog post, which made us speculate that more music genres might be added to the game thanks to Facebook’s licensing deals with major music houses.

Beat Saber has been among the top VR games ever, selling more than 1 million copies of it. It also made to the top 12 games on the online game store run by SteamVR. Facebook has said that Beat Saber will continue being available on all gaming platforms and won’t be exclusive to Oculus.

In Mike’s exact words, “The shared experiences of games are profoundly memorable ones, and for millions of people, Beat Saber was their first encounter with immersive VR gaming. Today we’re announcing that Beat Games is joining us in our quest to bring VR to more people around the world. They will join Oculus Studios as an independently operated studio in Prague, continuing to create new ways for people to experience music and VR gaming. Most importantly, what the community has come to love about Beat Saber will remain intact. Beat Games will continue to ship content and updates for Beat Saber across all currently supported platforms, now with even more support from Facebook.”

Beat games seems excited about being a part of Oculus team, we can just wait and see where this acquisition will lead the company to and whether the otherwise ailing Oculus can make something out of it.

Social media users beware, your data may not be very safe, Facebook and Twitter most vulnerable

Independent researchers recently found out that 2 software development kits, the One Audience and Mobiburn provided access to users’ data on Twitter and Facebook to third party developers.  This Data included email addresses, usernames, and recent tweets/posts on both the platforms. Both social media giants have given statements that they will inform users whose data might have been affected and that they will be improving security.

Many apps allow a user to login using their Twitter or Facebook credentials. If a user logged in to apps running OneAudience or Mobiburn using their Twitter or Facebook credentials then their data may be accessible by third party developers.

“We recently received a report about a malicious mobile software development kit (SDK) maintained by OneAudience.  We are informing you about this today because we believe we have a responsibility to inform you of incidents that may impact the safety of your personal data or Twitter account. This issue is not due to a vulnerability in Twitter’s software, but rather the lack of isolation between SDKs within an application. Our security team has determined that the malicious SDK, which could be embedded within a mobile application, could potentially exploit a vulnerability in the mobile ecosystem to allow personal information (email, username, last Tweet) to be accessed and taken using the malicious SDK. While we have no evidence to suggest that this was used to take control of a Twitter account, it is possible that a person could do so.” Twitter said in a statement.

Twitter also mentioned that they have informed Google and Apple about the malicious SDK so the companies can take actions if required to protect users.

Facebook also made a statement saying that “After investigating, we removed the apps from our platform for violating our platform policies and issued cease and desist letters against One Audience and Mobiburn. We plan to notify people whose information we believe was likely shared after they had granted these apps permission to access their profile information like name, email and gender.”

Currently it does not look like iOS users were affected by this data breach. This is not the first time we have heard about a data breach like this. If you come across an app that is asking you for extra access to your private data and phone settings, it is better not install that app, even if it is from a known source.

Customer data breached yet again on OnePlus’s website

These days incidences of hacking and data breaches are growing. In the middle of it is again OnePlus. The company kept details to a minimum and did not specify what was hacked. However, OnePlus just stated that some user’s information was accessed. The company said that details such as passwords, payment-related information etc were safe and that details like email IDs, address and phone number might have been accessed by an unauthorised party.

Last year, in January 2018, a similar security breach on the OnePlus website exposed the credit card details of almost 40,000 customers. This time, OnePlus did not give any figures, instead said that certain accounts were exposed. The company gave a statement saying that the intruder was prevented from accessing all of the data and that security of the data was increased. The company has said that they are working with authorities to figure out the breach. The company informed affected users that they may receive spam emails. This information was given only to users whose information was affected by the breach.

The company promised to work on security measures of the online store and website. They propose to do this by a bug bounty program starting at the end of December. They also promised that the current website has been thoroughly inspected to ensure security breaches do not occur again.

Ziv, from the Security team of OnePlus made a statement on the OnePlus forum. “We want to update you that we have discovered that some of our users’ order information was accessed by an unauthorized party. We can confirm that all payment information, passwords and accounts are safe, but certain users’ name, contact number, email and shipping address may have been exposed. Impacted users may receive spam and phishing emails as a result of this incident. We took immediate steps to stop the intruder and reinforce security. Before making this public, we informed our impacted users by email. Right now, we are working with the relevant authorities to further investigate this incident. We are deeply sorry about this, and are committed to doing everything in our power to prevent further such incidents.”

We hope OnePlus learns from this and enforces stronger protective measures to safeguard customer data and privacy, as this is not the first time it is happening on its website.

The Huawei Nova 6 SE seems to have taken a leaf out of the iPhone 11 Pro’s book

Rumours tell us that Huawei will be announcing the Nova 6 5G on December 5, but we have heard that this may not be the only phone launching on December 5. Thanks to Twitter pages, Huawei Club (@ClubHuawei) and Teme (@RODENT950), which revealed that a new phone called Huawei Nova 6 SE is in the works and might be launched on the same day as the Huawei Nova 6 5G.

If released, the Nova 6 SE will be the second Huawei phone of the SE series. The previous one being the Huawei Mate SE. Apple too released the iPhone SE (special edition) in 2016.

Seems like designers are Huawei got inspired by the latest iPhone 11 series. Well, the Huawei Nova 6 SE looks to be more than just inspired by the iPhone 11 pro. The rear design image which was leaked shows that the camera module is the same as an iPhone 11 Pro’s with an additional camera with the LED flash being below the camera setup.

According to another image leaked online, the phone will be a mid-range device as it is going to run on a Kirin 810 processor. The feature which will set the smartphone apart, if launched, however, is the 40W Super charged fast charging. This is a feature previously seen on the Mate 30 that will come to Huawei Nova 6.

The phone most likely will have a LED panel with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner which might double as the power button. The device looks like it has a punch-hole display with the hole on the top left corner for the selfie camera. We speculate that the phone in the image is a Huawei Nova 6 SE and has a gradient pink finish, with a gold frame and black borders.

One has to wait for the official announcement by the company to know about the camera’s megapixel definitions, the display quality and other specifications. Hopefully, Things will become clearer on December 5 when these smartphones see the light of day.

Tesla launches company’s first electric pickup truck – The Cybertruck

Tesla’s CEO Elon Musk recently showcased the company’s first electric pickup truck in USA called the Cybertruck. The truck comes in three versions, the versions being that can run up to 250, 300 and 500 miles. Musk put the truck through different tests to showcase the strength and endurance of the vehicle.

The Cybertruck comes out in 3 variants, one with a single motor rear-wheel drive, while the other 2 are all-wheel drive. The Triple motor all-wheel drive comes with 500 miles of range and can do 0-60 MPH in under 2.9 seconds. It can be purchased for 69,900 US dollars (Rs 50.17 lakhs approx.). The Dual motor all-wheel drive has 300 miles of range and can do 0-60 MPH in under 4.5 seconds. It can be purchased for 49,900 US dollars (Rs 35.81 lakhs approx.) and the third variant is a single motor rear-wheel drive with 250 miles range, and can do 0-60 MPH in under 6.5 seconds. This one can be picked up for 39,900 US dollars (Rs 28.63 lakhs approx.).

The truck can seat six adults and the body of the Cybetruck will be made of ultra-hard 30X cold rolled stainless steel. The Cybertruck promises better performance than any sports car. The vehicle will be built with a tough exterior shell made for ultimate durability and passenger protection. Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton on this automobile, every component of the pickup truck is designed for superior strength and endurance.

The company says, “With up to 3,500 pounds of payload capacity and adjustable air suspension, Cybertruck is the most powerful tool we have ever built, engineered with 100 cubic feet of exterior, lockable storage — including cover that is strong enough to stand on.” And talking about using cold rolled stainless steel, they further say “If there was something better, we’d use it. Help eliminate dents, damage and long-term corrosion with a smooth monochrome exoskeleton that puts the shell on the outside of the car and provides you and your passengers maximum protection.”

Also, the Cybertruck has a vault-like lockable storage facility, with the second row having the ability to provide more storage. There is also a 17-inch touchscreen user interface in the central console. The Cybertruck is very futuristic in design and the performance seems too good to be true, we will have to wait and see the actual product in 2021, when it official hits the road. The truck is now available for pre-order on the website in USA.

Sadly, like every other Tesla vehicle, the Cybertruck might not make its way onto the Indian roads.

Beware! Your Samsung or Google phone might be affected by this malicious bug

Recently, Checkmarx found a new bug in the camera apps of Google, Samsung and a few other companies. This bug has made it possible for a hacker to spy on the user through the phone’s camera app and upload it to the hacker’s cloud. All the hacker requires is the user to grant data storage permission to it. Google has recently been giving importance to secure user data with a lot of app privacy.

The California based company currently has a fine grain permission system that asks and grants access to the phone’s hardware one by one. Unfortunately, the bug is able to escape that system setup and seems harmless to Google’s automated anti-malware systems. Google’s security systems do not recognize this malware as it looks similar to a harmless app.The malicious act looks harmless to users and the phone’s anti-malware system.

The app does not ask for permissions beyond access to data storage. The camera application facilitates the bug to control the camera to take photos or record videos. It can even access the user’s GPS to get their location. The bug also records phone conversations by recording calls of the user when the phone kept next to the ear.

While other camera apps may be affected too, the bug is shown to affect mainly camera apps on phones from Google or Samsung. The security research group, Checkmarx who discovered the bug, informed Google and Samsung in July. Google says their security systems have already patched this issue; Samsung is yet to give a statement about their efforts to confront the bug. Hopefully, a bug patch file will be soon sent to the Samsung users as well which will stop this malicious attack.
