WhatsApp’s new self-destructing message feature: Everything there’s to know

In what appears to definitely be a trend, WhatsApp too will soon have the message disappearing feature rolled out to the masses. Currently available only to beta testers, this feature allows a user to decide if and when do they want messages to be automatically deleted. This way, the user gets to control how long does a message stay on their device.

Users can opt from time durations of an hour, a day, a month, a year or the option to disable this option. Currently named as the delete messages option, this feature is only available on group chats and can be controlled only by the user. For example, in the happenstance of a user choosing 1 hour, any message delivered on the group chat will be deleted automatically within one hour.

This feature is not the same as the delete message for all option on WhatsApp, where on deletion, a message saying “this message was deleted” comes up for all group members. This feature only works when used by the user and does not automatically delete messages like the disappearing message option is available to beta users currently.

The feature is basically a self-destruct button to increase user compatibility by clearing up messages on a group chat, which can occupy a lot of space. This feature saves time for the user who will otherwise have to delete messages manually. This self-destruct feature will provide more security to users who have data they don’t want to leave traces of on their phones or on the WhatsApp servers.

Another feature WhatsApp is working on is the dark mode feature. This feature will first be sampled by iOS users who are running iOS 13. Apple iPhone users will also soon get access to call waiting support, chat screen redesign etc.

It is not confirmed if the self-destructing, disappearing messages feature will be available to all users on iOS as well and if it will apply to private chats too.

This feature is rolling out months after the much appreciated “add to group” feature where users can control who can add them to groups is a step ahead towards customer privacy and safety by WhatsApp.

The famous Jony Ive says adieu to Apple for fresh beginnings

Apple’s chief designer, Jony Ive who designed the look and feel of most iPhones and iMac has officially left Apple. Rumours of him leaving the tech giant to begin his own design firm was confirmed by the disappearance of his photo and bio from Apple’s website. Ive who has worked in Apple for almost 30 years announced in June about his desire to move on. His independent design firm is called loveFrom.

On Ive, Apple CEO Tim Cook has been heard saying “Ive is a singular figure in the design world and his role in Apple’s revival cannot be overstated, from 1998’s groundbreaking iMac to the iPhone and the unprecedented ambition of Apple Park, where recently he has been putting so much of his energy and care,”

Ive was also one of Steve Job’s dearest friends. It is said that Jobs considered him as a spiritual partner. Most apple designs currently in use are designed by Ive, including but not limited to the iMac, iPod, iPad etc.Ive’s resignation from Apple comes at a time when the world is looking forward towards Apple for the iPhone 12, and if rumours are to be believed, Apple’s first foldable smartphone.

Ive was born in London. He studied design at the University of Northumbria, who has some of his work displayed at their design museum. He later worked at a startup called Tangerine as a part of their industrial design team. He then left Tangerine and joint Apple full time in September 1992.  He was the senior vice president of industrial design, and he went on to head the team for most of Apple’s commercial successes. Ive’s first design was the iMac in 1998 that made way for all his other design successes. His success in Apple makes LoveFrom a firm player in the whole design game in Silicon Valley.

The brain child of Jony Ive and Marc Newson, LoveFrom will also have Apple as one of their clients.

iPhone models in 2020 will use OLED technology from Samsung and LG

Samsung display is all set to be the sole supplier of the 2020 iPhone line-up for 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch OLED display panels. These future Apple iPhones of the year 2020 will come with display technology that Samsung Displays supplies to Samsung Electronics for their own line of smartphones including Samsung’s on-cell touch OLED panel. Called aY-Octa technology, this method will be used in iPhone displays being manufactured from 2020. While LG is all set to give film touch method-based OLED panels to Apple.

News is that Apple was looking for 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch displays for its future phones produced in 2020. So in came Samsung and LG. According to speculations, Samsung display will be the only supplier of on-cell touch flexible OLED panels of 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch.

A South Korean news site ETNews said, “It is expected that the OLED material for next-generation iPhones will also be coming from South Korean display manufacturers. It is understood that Samsung Display and LG Display will supply their OLED displays to Apple for its new iPhone model that is expected to be released in the fall of 2020. While there is a high chance that BOE, which had drawn many interests, will suffer a sad defeat, South Korean display manufacturers will continue to enjoy being the sole OLED suppliers of Apple. This news confirms once again that South Korea is far ahead of China when it comes to mobile display.”

This means that Apple is looking for better display technology available through Samsung Display for its new phones, which are predicted to be released in fall 2020. Rumours also suggest that Apple is working on a 5G network compatible phone that might be launched next year.

Samsung’s on-cell OLED panel does not need a separate film, leading to a thinner display and reduced production prices. Because of the advantage of the on-cell touch OLED panel along with the fact that Samsung Display is the only company in the world who can mass produce the on-cell touch OLED panels, has brought Apple to them for 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch OLED panels.

Meanwhile, 6.1-inch OLED panels will be supplied by both Samsung Displays and LG as 6.1-inch OLED panel will be based on film touch method instead of the on-touch OLED. In this case, Apple will be another smartphone company that will be paying Samsung to use one of its parts. Overall, this will also increase Samsung’s global revenue.

Twitter to begin deleting inactive accounts from December 11

If you’re someone who created a Twitter account for the sake of it and haven’t used it in a while, beware your account might be removed. Twitter has begun notifying users who have not logged in for more than 6 months. Account closures will not be happening overnight but over a period of many months.

This is to free username’s which are held by inactive users, which can be later given to new users who want a similar username. Make sure to log in soon, though it is not necessary that you have to make or retweet a tweet, signing in should be enough to prevent your Twitter account from being deleted.

The purge cleaning will begin on December 11 2019, continuing over a long period of time.

Twitter explains the purge as an effort to present accurate and credible information for users who depend on the data from Twitter. It also makes the app more user-friendly by saving time while looking for a specific user or tweet.

The downside of the purge will be for the deceased or those unable to login to their accounts and hence all of their activity on Twitter. Memorable posts will no longer be available if the account that made the tweet is deleted. This also might affect famous pages who have recently fallen into silence for at least over 6 months.

Many accounts which have not been active since the last 6 months are receiving emails about their inactivity and requests to sign in to prevent the deletion of their account. The email also asks current users to agree to the new terms, privacy policy and cookie use, this will allow users to get the best experience out of Twitter. Twitter has also rolled out a new feature where usernames with less than 5 characters can no longer register on Twitter.

Twitter was recently in the news because of a malicious SDK that enabled hackers to access private user data, which can be given to third party organisations. Twitter however made a statement and said that affected users were informed and that they have increased security closing loopholes that may have caused this data breach.

Beat Games, the studio behind Beat Saber bought by Facebook

Facebook Inc has now taken over Beat Games, the creators of the Beat Saber game as an independent gaming studio. The Beat Saber game combines music, lightsabers and dancing into one for a secret price. Beat games will be joining Facebook’s very own Oculus gaming studio.  The studio is based out of Prague and it will continue to be situated there. The studio will still continue developing the Best Sabre game but the tech will be used in other games/apps by Facebook.

This merger means that Oculus now owns one of the industry’s most popular games as Oculus is trying to push out VR Gaming to a larger section of consumers. For the unknown, Oculus was bought by Facebook way back in 2014 for a sum of 2 billion USD.

Mike Verdu, the director of Content and the head of VR and augmented-reality content at Facebook, gave clues in his blog post, which made us speculate that more music genres might be added to the game thanks to Facebook’s licensing deals with major music houses.

Beat Saber has been among the top VR games ever, selling more than 1 million copies of it. It also made to the top 12 games on the online game store run by SteamVR. Facebook has said that Beat Saber will continue being available on all gaming platforms and won’t be exclusive to Oculus.

In Mike’s exact words, “The shared experiences of games are profoundly memorable ones, and for millions of people, Beat Saber was their first encounter with immersive VR gaming. Today we’re announcing that Beat Games is joining us in our quest to bring VR to more people around the world. They will join Oculus Studios as an independently operated studio in Prague, continuing to create new ways for people to experience music and VR gaming. Most importantly, what the community has come to love about Beat Saber will remain intact. Beat Games will continue to ship content and updates for Beat Saber across all currently supported platforms, now with even more support from Facebook.”

Beat games seems excited about being a part of Oculus team, we can just wait and see where this acquisition will lead the company to and whether the otherwise ailing Oculus can make something out of it.

Xiaomi recently confirmed that the Xiaomi Redmi K30 will be launching on December 10 in China as its global launch. The Redmi K30 will be the flagship smartphone of Xiaomi Redmi series because of its 5G support and dual punch-hole camera display. The Redmi K30 Pro might be launched alongside the Redmi K30. The Redmi K30 is supportive of both NSA and SA, making for a smoother transition between the networks.

The Redmi K30 is the successor of the Redmi K20. Xiaomi has confirmed rumours that the Redmi K30 has a dual-punch hole camera display. The phone is also said to have a 60MP camera sensor and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.
