This Chrome extension can ‘transform’ Gmail into Inbox for Gmail

1
Inbox by Gmail has finally bid farewell to the world today. The app never garnered as much popularity as Gmail enjoys, but some users really loved Inbox because of the useful features that it offered. Launched in 2014, the app survived for almost five years before it was killed off by its parent company. However, before the app was removed from the face of the earth, a Chrome extension emerged that can be used to transform Gmail into a service that looks more like Inbox. Dubbed Inbox for Gmail, the Chrome extension can be downloaded via the official Chrome Web Store. But it is worth mentioning that the new extension has been made by a team of developers in Sweden and comes with a number of UI elements that Inbox for Gmail had. If you are someone who is going to miss Inbox for Gmail, you will love this extension. But it is worth pointing out that the extension is nowhere affiliated with the official Inbox for Gmail service.
According to the listing of the extension on Chrome Web Store, the Inbox Theme for Gmail gets the experience of Google Inbox to Gmail. It gives users a clean and organised design on Gmail, that was earlier available exclusively on Inbox by Gmail. On installing the extension, you would be able to see the mix-and-match of grey and grey and white colours on your Gmail account. Furthermore, the extension will also transform the top bar of the email service with colour schemes on the mailbox components that are active on the screen. So, if you are looking at your Inbox, the top bar will be shown in a vivid Arctic Blue colour, while it changes to a bright Orange when you look at Starred messages. However, while the extension manages to add the look and feel of Inbox for Gmail to Google’s current email service, it does not get any of the renowned features that Inbox was known for. But it is worth adding here that in the last few months, Google has added a number of features from Inbox for Gmail to Gmail. Smart Reply, Nudges, and inline attachments are among the Inbox for Gmail features that have now been added to Gmail. However, since only some of the features that Inbox users loved made their way to Gmail and many are not available even now, many users feel that using Gmail after being accustomed to Inbox is more of a downgrade. If you wish to download the extension you can head to Chrome Web Store and look for Inbox Theme for Gmail. The extension will soon work with Firefox and Safari too.

WhatsApp Groups are a necessary evil. Sometimes, being in a WhatsApp Groups helps save a lot of time as you don’t have to call different people in order to get your plan into action. However, there are also times when being a part of a group on WhatsApp is downright annoying, because you simply aren’t interested in the conversation other participants are having. Popular email app Spark makes its way to Android

0
Technology giant Google didn’t just kill off its social media platform Google+ right on April 2, but its email service ‘Inbox for Gmail’ too. It was an alternative email service by Google that packed a number of features that Gmail initially did not have like message grouping and reminders. Although it never managed to garner the kind of popularity that is enjoyed by Gmail, the app will be missed by a lot of its users because it offered some very useful features. However, we should add here that the last few months saw a number of features of ‘Inbox for Gmail’ make their way to the regular Gmail app. These include Smart Reply, Nudges, inline attachments and others. But then, only some of the features that Inbox users loved made their way to Gmail. There are many that are not available even now, and because of this, many users feel that using Gmail after being accustomed to Inbox is more of a downgrade. Amid all this, Spark saw an opportunity that it could make use of. For those unaware, Spark is an email client on iOS that has garnered a lot of appreciation for the features that it offers like smart notifications, snoozing, send later, quick replies and reminders. And now, Spark is becoming available for Android smartphones too.
However, in its current version for Android, some features of the app are missing. Quick replies and integrations with third-party apps are two such features. However, they are expected to be made available on the Android version of Spark’s app very soon. In case you loved Inbox and don’t want to settle for Gmail in spite of the additions that it has got, Spark is definitely app that is worth giving a try to. We should mention that Spark is not identical to Inbox, but it does have a number of features that we have seen previously on Inbox. Also, it is one among the best alternatives to Inbox that you will find. We should mention that Google is doing everything that it can in order to make Gmail attractive to potential users. We have already spoken about Gmail getting a number of Inbox features, but it is worth adding that the email service recently also got a Material Redesign that completely changed its look and feel. Other than this, Gmail is also getting support for AMP, which will enable users to shop and fill out forms from their inbox itself, as they would not be redirected to the website they got the email from. Update: You can also read here about a Chrome extension that will make your Gmail account look like Inbox.

Airtel to launch an e-books platform soon

0
After launching digital content platforms like Wynk Music and Airtel TV, Bharti Airtel Ltd will soon be unveiling a service for readers. Dubbed Airtel Books, the service will come with a collection of e-books for smartphone users. We should add here that with the launch, Airtel aims to upgrade its subscribers to a higher tariff plans and retain then on its network. The digital content strategies of telecom companies are now becoming increasingly crucial for them because cheap data tariffs are no longer a way to attract consumers, primarily because all the players are offering data at dirt cheap prices. As of December 2018, Airtel had a total of 284.2 million playing subscribers on its network. Its music streaming app Wynk has 120 million users, which Airtel TV enjoys a user base of 80 million. Speaking about the upcoming book service, Sameer Batra, CEO, content and apps, Bharti Airtel said, “In the past, we made good progress on the entertainment side and we were studying many categories apart from music and video. We realized e-books is a niche and strong category, especially as Airtel has high-quality customers on its network. Also, it’s an uncluttered space.”
While Reliance Jio‘s apps does include JioMags, it focuses on magazines and not books. The upcoming service will be available to both Airtel and non-Airtel customers and those who subscribe to it will be able to access it on Android as well as on iOS. Airtel Books will initially offer more than 70,000 titles from leading Indian as well as international authors across various genres like crime, romance, fitness, diet, spirituality, business, history and politics, and classics. Furthermore, although at the beginning Airtel Books will have books in English and Hindi, it will soon diversify and include titles from other languages as well. It is worth mentioning that in December 2017, the company had acquired a strategic equity stake in Juggernaut Books via its wholly owned subsidiary Nettle Infrastructure Investments Ltd. Juggernaut Books was co-founded two years ago by Durga Raghunath and Chiki Sarkar and the company has Nandan Nilekani as its investor. The telco will be relying on Juggernaut to curate content for its upcoming application. Airtel has also said that it will give all its users a complimentary trial for 30 days. The Readers Club subscription will cost Rs 129 for six months and Rs 199 for a year. Other than this, there will be an option to pay separately for a single book too. Batra also added, “As e-books is a niche category, we believe the propensity to pay will be higher compared to other kinds of content. We also plan to offer special benefits for Airtel subscribers and are exploring how to bundle the e-books offering with our rewards programme Airtel Thanks. If you are a high-paying Airtel subscriber, we may give some complimentary benefits also.”

Google Pixel’s Call Screen feature to come to Nokia and Motorola smartphones: Report

0
Google Pixel smartphones are known to have a useful feature called ‘Call Screen’ that helps the users identify and avoid spam calls on their device. The ‘Call Screen’ feature does this with the help of Google Assistant. While till now, you needed to have a Google Pixel smartphone to get this feature, Call Screen is now all set to come to the Google Phone app in Nokia and Motorola devices as well. A code has been found in the beta version of the Google Phone app that indicates that smartphones from Nokia and Motorola may receive the Call Screen feature as well. The Call Screen feature was introduced by the search giant back in October 2018. A Reddit user named hkyq wrote on the platform that he found the Google Phone beta app while browsing the code. The user also found two flags, which clubbed with the codes found, suggest that the search giant might expand its Call Screen feature to other smartphone manufacturers including Nokia and Motorola. But other than the mentions of the two brands, there are no other details mentioned.
The name of the device or model which is set to receive Google’s Call Screen feature has not been mentioned. However, it is being speculated that only those devices of Nokia and Motorola which run Android One will receive the said feature. We should mention that are a number of smartphones from both the manufacturers that runs on Android One. However, no official comment from either of the companies has been made in this subject. When Call Screen feature is enabled, the users see an option of Screen Call whenever they receive a call on their device. If the feature is turned on, it uses Google Assistant to talk to the caller and present a transcription of the same to the user. After looking at the transcription, the user can decide if he wants to attend the call, disconnect it or let the Assistant keep the conversation going. The Call Screen feature was launched by Google back in October 2018 and it rolled out in the new Pixel 3 and the Pixel 3 XL devices which were launched last year. The feature was then rolled out to other Pixel devices later in December 2018. Google’s Support Page states that English-speaking people in the United States who own the Pixel 2, Pixel 2 Xl, Pixel 3 or the Pixel 3 XL can use the said feature. Waiting for PUBG 2? Here’s some bad news for you

PUBG or PlayerUnknown’s Battle Grounds is one of the most popular games in the world today. Although earlier, the game was only available for PCs, the PUBG’s popularity surged tremendously since its mobile version was rolled out. PUBG Mobile has scores of users in India as well as in other parts of the world. However, there won’t be a second version of the ever-popular game. And this has been confirmed by none other than PUBG’s creator Brendan Greene has. Greene has said that he is not planning on making a second version of PUBG Mobile. He also added that he has moved to other projects within the PUBG Corp. and his next game will be different from PUBG. The upcoming game will be of a completely different genre, however, it will still be a multiplayer like PUBG. But it is being speculated that in the new game, the players would not have to kill other players. “I’ve done the killing thing. It’s fun. I think I’ve provided others with a good way of killing each other. But I want to explore some other things,” Greene said in a conversation with GamesIndustry.biz. But when asked if the new project he has been working on will be a co-operative game/multiplayer game, he confirmed that there might be a possibility of such a game releasing.
“That’s something we’re going to explore. The last man standing concept is great, but I’ve done that. I don’t really intend to make PUBG 2. I’ve done battle royale, it’s time to try something else. There are ideas about how we connect to people and how we provide the different experiences I have,” he further added to his statement. It should be noted that in the heat of the new releases of battle-royale genre of games like Battlefield: Firestorm or COD: Blackout, PUBG Mobile still remains popular. Although the PC version of the game might be facing stiff competition from its rivals, PUBG Mobile continues to grow in popularity with more and more number of people joining in the battle. It should be noted that PUBG has now been released for other platforms as well such as the Xbox One, PS4, PC and Mobile. The game has also gotten a new map called Vikendi snow map which was demanded by the players for quite some time. Furthermore, PUBG regularly releases new updates and contents for its game to keep it interesting for players as well as make sure that it’s bug free. But it should also be noted that PUBG Mobile, which is hugely popular in India, has received its fair share of criticism too. The game was banned in Rajkot, Gujarat, and some players were also arrested for playing PUBG Mobile after it was banned. Google+ shut down begins today: Everything that you should know

0
Technology giant Google has finally started shutting down Google+ and it is now deleting the accounts of all the consumers on its social media platform. This marks the end of Google’s attempt to compete with the likes of Facebook and Twitter. Google has said that Google+ is being closed down due to “low usage” and also because it became a liability for the company to keep it secure. The technology giant revealed that Google+ suffered two data breaches that had the potential of exposing information of millions of users on the platform to outside developers. It was the first data leak that made Google decide that it was time to close down Google+. When the second data breach happened, the search giant preponed the date for closing down the social media platform. So while Google+ earlier had to be shut down by August, it will now close down by April.
In the case of both the data leaks, Google has clarified that there is no evidence of developers being aware of the bugs, let alone them taking an advantage of them. According to Google’s timeline for the shutdown for Google+, the APIs for the social media platform have already been cut off. Speaking further about the platform, Google’s Ben Smith said in October last year, “While our engineering teams have put a lot of effort and dedication into building Google+ over the years, it has not achieved broad consumer or developer adoption, and has seen limited user interaction with apps. 90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds.” We should add here that during the first few years of Google+, the search giant forced its users to create an account on the platform in order to comment on its other services. For instance, user could not comment on YouTube videos without having a Google+ account. Needless to say, the move drew criticism from many. Furthermore, Google also tied the process of creating a Gmail account to being on Google+. However, being forced into the platform did not work well with most users, so they couldn’t really get themselves to appreciate Google+ features that were not present on other social media platforms. The features that made Google+ stand out included Circles, which let users organise people into different categories like Friends, Work, Family and more, so they could decide what to share with which Circle. Other than this, it was a platform where people could have conversations based on a topic, something that is not present on Facebook. In spite of all this, Google+ never managed to become a hit among the masses. Google has already said that it will take it a few months to delete all personal Google+ accounts, so don’t be surprised if you come across pages from the website even after today. However, the content deletion has already started. Ford’s electric car will travel more than 300 miles on a single charge

Ford will be seen launching its first long-range electric vehicle — an SUV that is inspired from the Mustang muscle car — in 2020. The company has also announced that the SUV will be able to travel more than 300 miles on a single charge. Ford first teased its upcoming car at the Detroit Auto Show and since then, the electric vehicle has been codenamed as ‘Mach 1’ The executives from the company have stated time and again since 2017 that they intend to offer more than 300 miles their first electric vehicles that reaches the masses. We should mention that although this is the company’s first long range electric vehicle, shorter range all-electric Focus hatchbacks and Ranger trucks from Ford have gone on sale in the past. With Ford‘s latest announcement, it looks like the company is all set to execute its plans. The company has said that based on Europe’s Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicle Test Procedure, ‘Mach 1’ will eclipse 370 miles or 600 kilometres.
It is worth adding that the WLTP standard came into action in 2018 in order to evaluate the energy consumption of cars, including EVs, on the road. The standard is more strict than the one that it replaced, however, the estimates of WLTP are more optimistic than the ones that were generated by the Environmental Protection Agency in the US. But then, it is hard to say what estimate the EPA will arrive at just on the basis of the WLTP one. For instance, the Jaguar I-Pace has a WLTP rating of around 292 miles and it wound up with an EPA range of 240 miles. Going by this, we can assume Ford’s upcoming car’s range to be closer to 300 miles. Other comparisons between WLTP and EPA show a narrower difference between the two estimates and extends Mach 1’s range to 330 miles. But then, we should add that any value above 300 miles will be good enough to make Ford one among the top companies on the EV range leader board. Currently, the only company that sells electric cars with over 300 miles of range is Tesla. Electric vehicles from companies like Mercedes-Benz, Audi and Jaguar have ranges between 200 miles and 260 miles. However, this is set to change with Porsche’s first all-electric car, which is all set to hit the road this year.  We should add here that Ford has committed more than $10 billion to its EV line-up, so we are expecting that the upcoming car to really turnaround things for the company.

PlayStation Store will now only refund pre-orders and games if they aren’t downloaded

Japanese electronics maker Sony has validated a refund policy for purchases that are made from the PlayStation Store, which is coming into effect starting today. With the new policy enacted, the terms for refund will differ on the basis of the type of content that you are returning. Going forward, users will not be able to get credit back on a purchase if you have downloaded it or started playing it. However, the only exception to this are subscriptions like PS Plus and PS Now. We should mention that this comes right after Sony cut off third-party retailers like Gameloft from selling PS4 download codes. It is worth adding that if you have pre-ordered a game, you will have up to 14 days from the date of purchase to receive a refund for it. However, this is also not applicable if you begin downloading and streaming the content or even preloading it, for that matter. But then, in spite of all this, if you are eligible to get your money back, the company will return it to the original payment method. This is not even the worst bit yet.
In case games are already released along with all DLC and season passes, you would still get 14 days to get a refund in case you haven’t downloaded or streamed the content. However, in this case, you will get the refund as PSN wallet credit. Sony has also suggested users turn off ‘Automatic Downloads’ since if a game that you don’t wish to keep gets downloaded with this function, you would not be eligible to get a refund. This is an important tip to keep in mind, considering that a majority of the players have the feature on, as it enables them to start playing the game as soon as they have some time at hand instead of having to wait for it to download first. It’s a nightmare for some users to wait for a game to download, and with the new policy, Sony is asking users to do that with every game that they play on PlayStation. Coming to subscriptions to PlayStation Plus or PlayStation Now, they can be refunded within 14 days of purchase, however, Sony will credit this to your PSN wallet and not your original payment method. But then, the company has also added that it will initiate the refund on the basis of how much of your subscription has lapsed. So, if you get lesser money than what you originally paid, don’t be surprised.

Samsung Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e to receive the monthly security updates

Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones – Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10+ and Galaxy S10e – were launched in February this year. And one month after its launch, Samsung has announced that Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e and Galaxy S10+ will get security updates every month. However, with the addition of the Galaxy S10 models in its monthly updates list, Samsung has downgraded its previous Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge to quarterly updates. But the South Korean technology giant has also assured that the devices above the Galaxy S7 will receive the monthly updates. This includes all smartphones starting from Samsung Galaxy S7 active. According to the updated list on Samsung Mobile’s official security website, the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy S10+ and the Galaxy S10e will now get the monthly security updates. The list includes the Galaxy S10 series, the Galaxy S9 series, the Galaxy S8 series, the Galaxy Note 9, the Galaxy Note 8 and the Galaxy A5 (2017) along with the Galaxy A8 (2018).  It should be noted that all these devices have been launched after 2016 including Galaxy S7 Active, which is the only model of the Galaxy S7 which will receive the monthly update. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge have been put in the list of devices to receive the quarterly security updates. The list of smartphones that receive quarterly security updates includes the Galaxy S8 Lite, Galaxy Note FE, Galaxy A8+(2018), Galaxy J2 (2018) etc. Also, the newly launched Samsung Galaxy A70, Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, Galaxy A30, Galaxy A40, Galaxy A50 along with the Galaxy M-series models also come under the list of devices that will receive quarterly updates.
The quarterly update list of Samsung also have devices such as the Galaxy A2 Core, which has not been released yet. It is an upcoming Samsung device which will run on Android Go platform. According to some leaks and rumours online, the Galaxy A2 Core may get unveiled on April 10 but other than that there is no news about the device. Other than smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 which was launched back in February 2017 is demoted by the company. Earlier, the tablet was on the list of devices to receive quarterly security updates but now Samsung has made a few changes and has put the tablet’s name on the list of devices to receive other regular security updates. Snapchat is now available in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, and Punjabi

Photo-messaging app Instagram has announced today that it will now be available in four Indian languages. The social media company has said that it has localised the app experience for its Indian users. Starting today, Snapchat will be available in Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati and Punjabi. Besides these four languages, Snapchat will also be getting support for Filipino, Malay, Vietnamese, and Urdu. We should add that the app has got support for these languages less than a month after Snapchat announced that it was found testing languages in the beta version of its app. It is worth mentioning that Snapchat’s updated iOS app will now come with support for new languages and will be available via the App Store. However, the update is expected to come soon to the Android version of the app too. The launch of the photo-messaging app in local languages is one of the many steps that have been taken by Snap over the last few months to expand in India. However, we should point out that four years back, Snapchat’s CEO Evan Spiegal called India poor and said that Snapchat is “only for rich people.” After Spiegal’s statement, a major chunk of Indian population uninstalled the app and started using photo-sharing app Instagram instead. While Snapchat completely denied that the statement was ever made, ultimately what company lost in terms of users became Instagram‘s gain. In fact, back then, even ratings of the photo-messaging app on App Store suffered greatly.
A few months back, Snapchat also partnered with four Indian Premier League (IPL) teams. The company has teamed up with Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders to offer updates and behind the scenes highlights for its fans on the app. Other than this, the app also had some special lenses, filters, and stickers for IPL. Prior to that, the app also launched some Holi-themed filters, stickers, and lenses for users in India. For International Women’s Day, the company also partnered with six female artists from the country and created sticker, filters and bitmojis especially for the day. Other than this, last year, Snapchat had also introduced a local version of Discover for India, under which people could find a curated list of vertical-format video stories from publishers and creators. To get content that interests Indian users, Snap also tied up with the likes of Brut, The Logical Indian, Pocket Aces, The Viral Fever, QYOU, Saavn and MissMalini.

T-series loses its lead as the No.1 YouTube channel

0
Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg’s PewDiePie was defeated by India’s T-series last week where the latter’s YouTube channel gained a lead of more than 50,000 subscribers making it the No.1 channel on the video platform. But that victory of T-series didn’t last long as PewDiePie has once again taken the lead from T-series. Today, PewDiePie became the biggest YouTube channel again after it surpassed T-Series by more than 1,50,000 subscribers. After being defeated last week, PewDiePie’s channel was promoted by two YouTube channels – kwebblekop and Philip DeFranco – who already have a large number of subscribers. The promotion gave PewDiePie the push he needed to defeat T-series and now they stand with a difference of more than 1,50,000 subscribers. This is not the first time the win-lose game between the two biggest YouTube channels had been played. We should mention that T-series has defeated PewDiePie many times in the past to become number 1 channel on YouTube. But PewDiePie and his followers find a way to surpass T-Series, even if that means buying billboards, hacking printers or getting slots on TV. The battle between the two channels has been going on for more than seven months now. Last week, when PewDiePie was defeated and he didn’t take being the No. 2 very well. He actually made a video ‘congratulating’ T-series and posted it on YouTube. However, he was actually being sarcastic and telling it took a “corporate with every Bollywood son” to defeat him, conveniently not mentioning his prior association with Disney, which is also a corporate. He didn’t stop at taking digs at the record label, but went ahead and took jabs at Indians as well in his video by talking about ‘India’s broken caste system’ and ‘crippling poverty.’
It is not the first time PewDiePie has been supported by other YouTubers and YouTube channels. Many channels came to support PewDiePie so that an individual would become the No. 1 channel on YouTube rather than a corporate – T-series. In the past, to increase PewDiePie’s subscribers hacking was also used where ‘someone’ hacked printers worldwide and urged the people to subscribe to PewDiePie. According to the data from Social Blade, T-series surpassed PewDiePie over 120 times since the battle however, the YouTuber found a way to make a comeback every time, even though he claims that he doesn’t care about T-Series or numbers in general. The last lead T-series had over PewDiePie was in March where it had gained a lead of more than 50,000 subscribers. Till now, T-series chairman Bhushan Kumar had stayed away from the battle and all the controversy going on between the two channels. But last month he too came forward and asked the Indian YouTubers to support the channel and make India win’. Bhushan Kumar on his Twitter handle wrote, “We’re on the brink of becoming the world’s biggest @YouTube channel. We can make history.” With the battle reaching new heights, it is yet to be seen which of the two will become not the winners but be first to reach 1 billion YouTube subscribers as both the channels have more than 90 million subscribers. Lok Sabha Elections 2019: WhatsApp launches ‘Checkpoint Tipline’ in India to counter the spread of fake news

Facebook-owned instant messaging service WhatsApp has announced its ‘Checkpoint Tipline’ feature on Tuesday. This feature allows the users to check the authenticity of the information they received, the new feature by WhatsApp comes weeks ahead of the India’s general election to counter the spread of fake news. Checkpoint Tipline was launched by Proto, an Indian based media skilling start-up. With the new feature, users in India can submit the misinformation and fake news they received to the Checkpoint Tipline on WhatsApp to +91-9643-000-888. Once the information is shared, the suspicious message will be verified by Proto’s verification centre. Once verified, the verification center will inform the user if the news is a fake or not. The verification centre can review the content sent to it – images, video links or text. The verification centre is able to verify content of four languages – Hindi, Telgu, Bengali and Malayalam.
In a statement, WhatsApp said, “Launched by Proto, an India-based media skilling start-up, this tipline will help create a database of rumours to study misinformation during elections for Checkpoint – a research project commissioned and technically assisted by WhatsApp. The response will indicate if information is classified as true, false, misleading, disputed or out of scope and include any other related information that is available.” Proto will also be working with other organisations to look into the information and check if the shared information is true or a piece of misinformation. The information checking initiative came after the platform faced criticism from the government when the spread of fake news claimed the lives of many individuals in mob-lynching last year. Lok Sabha Elections 2019: WhatsApp launches ‘Checkpoint Tipline’ in India to counter the spread of fake news So, to stop the spread of fake news on its platform, WhatsApp is taking various steps before the elections. WhatsApp is also putting ads on TV, papers and online to stop believing the information the users received until it is from a verified source. On Tuesday, WhatsApp said Dig Deeper Media and Meedan, which previously worked on misinformation-related projects around the world are helping Proto to develop the verification and research frameworks for India. This will make countering the fake news easier. Meedan has also developed the technology to support the verification of rumours which are spread on the platform. And it will also maintain the database of such content that have been processed. For doing this, they have expanded their check platform and then integrated it with the WhatsApp Business API, so that they receive and respond to messages at scale. Ritvvij Parrikh and Nasr ul Hadi, Founder of Proto said, “The goal of this project is to study the misinformation phenomenon at scale — natively in WhatsApp. As more data flows in, we will be able to identify the most susceptible or affected issues, locations, languages, regions, and more.” For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Apple begins production of iPhone 7 in India at Wistron’s plant in Bengaluru: Report

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple has started working on its India manufacturing plans. The company has reportedly started assembling its iPhone 7 at Wistron’s facility in Bengaluru. Taiwanese industrial giant Wistron is one among Apple‘s supplier and it already assembles the iPhone 6S in the country. Speaking to news agency IANS, a spokesperson from Apple said, “We are proud to be producing iPhone 7 in Bengaluru for our local customers furthering our long-term commitment in India.” Wistron started assembling iPhone 7 last month in India. We should add here that Wistron announced its plans to invest Rs 3,000 crore in the Narasupra industrial sector in Karnataka’s Kolar district last year. Initially, it was only assembling low-end iPhone SE in India and then later, it expanded its operations and started assembling iPhone 6S too.
According to Gujuran A, the head of Wistron India, the company will be setting up a unit to make iPhones in India in 43 acres of land that will be allotted to it. It is said that the unit will have an employment potential of over 10,000 people. The facility by Wistron will also manufacture a wider range of Apple’s devices. The Cupertino-based technology company is slowly and steadily implementing its plans to make deeper inroads in India, which happens to be a very important market for Apple since there are over 450 million smartphones users here. Starting the assembly of iPhone 7 in India is just a step further in achieving its plans for Apple. Speaking on the matter, Tarun Pathak, Associate Director of Hong-Kong based Counterpoint Research said that the Indian electronics market is growing very fast and has a significant advantage over some of the countries it is competing with. Speaking to the news agency, he said, “I think to start with, it makes sense for Apple to localise assembling of models that have the potential to scale up and then slowly expands it to the entire portfolio.” It is worth mentioning that the iPhone 7’s 32GB variant costs Rs 39,900, and the 128GB model costs Rs 49,900. In India, the price is one among the key factors for users when they are looking for a new smartphone to buy. To begin assembling more handsets in India, Apple is also seeking tax relief and some other incentives. We should also add that Apple has started reducing the price of the iPhone in China and may do the same in India, where a number of people still consider most iPhones to be expensive.

Design

The design of the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker seems to be from the early 1,900’s. It is an old-school design mixed with modern technology. The BT speaker has a mixed built of wood and plastic. The majority of the SP-50 is made out of wood while some of its parts like the controls or the smartphone dock is made out of plastic. Even though it is made of two materials, but both have more or less same colour scheme which gives it a one-tone colour look. The front of the speaker houses the speaker grills made out of plastic, inside which two small sized speakers are placed along with a small sub-woofer. The UBON logo prominently sits on the front of the speaker grills. The top of the speaker has the smartphone dock where you can place your smartphone or tablet in a dock cut out. The top also houses the media controls and the volume dial.
To elaborate, there are 4 buttons placed on top of the UBON SP-50 accompanied with the volume dial. The four buttons are — Previous, Next, Play/Pause and the Mode selection button. All the buttons are made out of plastic and have a sturdy feel, but the volume button is a bit hard to rotate i.e., its movement is not fluid. The left and the right side of the speaker is plain and doesn’t have anything. But the back of the device houses the main controls and connectors. There is a power on/off switch at the back of the UBON SP-50 speaker along with a USB connector, which can be used to play songs from a pen drive. There is also a microSD card slot that can be used to directly play the songs from a compatible card. Over that, there is also an AUX jack available here, which can be used to connect the speaker to the smartphone or other devices.

There is also a micro USB slot which is the charging port of the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker. Weirdly, the LED notification light is located at the back of the device. It was hard to understand if the device was turned off or on when looking from the front. The light usually glows blue when in normal mode, red in low battery mode and blue + red while charging the speaker. The device comes in only one colour variant – Brown Wood. Since it is light wood, we at times felt that if the device drops it might break. Also the surface will get scratched very easily.

The Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker has a boxy build and although it seems like one would want to carry it, it will be a hard task carrying this speaker inside a bag, as portability is a bit of an issue. These are best kept inside the house.

Performance

The Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker packs two 10W speakers and they have a frequency range of 60Hz to 15KHz (15,000Hz). There is also a small hole cut-out between the speakers, which houses the sub-woofer. It comes with Bluetooth 4.0 and has 10 metres BT working range, which is an acceptable distance. The speaker comes with a 2,000mAh battery and the company has promised a battery life of 6 hours of playback time on a single charge. And when we tested the speaker it was able to give just about that much, which is a good battery backup for a Bluetooth speaker. As mentioned earlier, it can play songs via Bluetooth, microSD card, Pen drive, AUX cable and it also comes with an in-built FM Radio.

The company had also promised that it can reconnect with the last device connected to it which is true. Once our smartphone’s Bluetooth was turned on, the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker automatically detected and connected with the smartphone. So the headache of re-pairing a device goes away, as the device remembers. Now coming to the main part of the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker — the sound. In which the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker performs quite well. In brief, the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker is loud. It gives a good mixture of lows and highs. The treble is clear and it also has a good level of bass. Although the speaker doesn’t have a wide sub-woofer, it delivers quite well in the bass department.

Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker smartphone holder
The company promised HD and stereo sound quality from the Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker and it was true to quite an extent. What we expected from this Speaker was delivered to us. Even though it did not exceed our expectations, it passed our tests with good marks. Verdict The Ubon SP-50 Wooden Wireless Bluetooth Speaker delivers what the company said it will deliver, no more and no less. It offers good sound quality with good levels of treble and bass. The sound offered by it is clear and loud and even the low notes are precise. Its build quality gives a retro and vintage look but at times we did feel it is not too sturdy. And lastly the price, with a price tag of Rs 2,990, it has stiff competition in the market. As others are giving water proof capability for just Rs 200-300 more. Rating 3.0 Pros : Excellent sound quality Good bass and treble Battery Backup Cons: Build not super sturdy Slightly expensive Not very portable For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Google discontinues its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones

0
Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were released back in October 2017 and they were the search giant’s flagship offerings to the smartphone market. And now, 2 years after their launch and months after their successors got unveiled, Google has stopped selling its Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL in the US markets. On Google’s official product website, you will only find Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL being sold along with the Pixel Stand, Pixel Cases, Google Pixel Buds, and other accessories. The only place where the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL are mentioned is the ‘Find the right Pixel for you’ section. This is the section where the Pixel, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 3 are compared with each other. But there is no ‘Buy Now’ button besides the Google Pixel 2 devices. On its official products website, Google is asking the users to buy the Pixel 3 series instead of the Pixel 2 series of smartphones. The news was first spotted by Android Police, and before its discontinuation, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL were sold with discounts and offers during festivals and sales. And now, the company has completely stopped the sale of the Pixel 2 devices. However, it should be noted that the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL software support will last another year.
After discontinuation from its products website, Google has removed the Pixel 2 series listing from its India website as well. On the India website, only the Pixel 3 and its other accessories are seen in the phone section. We should add here that on Flipkart, the Google Pixel 2 with 4GB RAM Just Black variant is still being sold. All the other variants of the device are listed ‘out of stock’ on Flipkart. Earlier, we saw that the search giant might be planning to launch its Pixel 3a and the Pixel 3a XL which will be a watered down and affordable version of the Google’s Pixel 3 flagship smartphones. The Pixel 3a will reportedly sport a 5.6-inch display and will be powered by Snapdragon 670 SoC while the Pixel 3a XL may feature a 6-inch display and will be reportedly be powered by the Snapdragon 710 SoC. Both the devices might come with 4GB of RAM and 18W fast charging support with USB Type-C port. Some reports suggest that the smartphone will be unveiled at Google I/O 2019, however, Google has not confirmed this yet.
