The noise-cancelling series of headphones from Sony has been one of the best that comes to India and the world. Yes, it has competition from the likes of Bose and Sennheiser, but Sony usually outplays them with superior sound, built and features. This time we got to tinker with the upgrade to the last years XM3 in the form of Sony WH-1000XM4. This is our review of the newly launched noise-cancelling headphones by Sony.
In This Article
Design
When it comes to design, you will not find the Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones as a significant upgrade to the XM3. There are subtle changes, but when kept side by side, you really cannot make out one from the other. Well, there was nothing wrong (built-wise) on the XM3, so we guess Sony did not want to re-invent the wheel. So, they kept everything very similar, except, they have made the comfort better. They have added 10 percent extra cushioning to the headband and ear cups. Added comfort is always an A+ in our books.
Available in two colours Black and Silver, we got our hands on the Black version to meddle with. The matt black texture can be seen all over-ear cups with a hint of bronze in the form of the Sony logo and vents. The faux leather headband and ear cups (insides) are premium grade and look good. Users also get a couple of buttons on the Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones ear cups, these include power and a custom button to access AI assistants (like Google assistant) on the smartphone. Along with that, you get USB Type-C charging port and 5 microphones located all over the left and right earpieces.
These are wireless headphones so you do get a neat carry case with the Sony WH-1000XM4 and it is as premium as one can get (in the segment). Over that, user can also connect a 3.5mm auxiliary cable (comes in the box) to the headphones in case you run out of battery juice.
Sony WH-1000XM4 wireless headphones Performance
Now let us come down to business and talk about its resonance. This is a place where Sony WH-1000XM4 predecessors excelled and this one is no different. In fact, these are a notch better. The noise cancellation works well, and you end up getting pure beautiful sound with excellent bass, mids and lows. We just loved every bit of it.
Sony WH-1000XM4 did not take any time to set up and within 2 minutes we were up and running. The Sony Headphones Connect app is needed to run them perfectly and to access the extra features of the headphones. Sony has added a sensor inside these headphones, which basically knows when you are wearing them and when not. As soon as you bring them down from the ears, the music stops playing, you put them back on the music starts again. Which means you end up saving battery and there no need to reach for the phone to pause the music.
Another enhancement Sony has brought about in Sony WH-1000XM4 is the multi-point connection. Users can now connect the headphones to multiple gadgets at the same time. This is great as many wanted this to come in the XM4 and the company listened. So, what does this feature do? Seamless connectivity with multiple devices. For example, if you are working on the laptop and listening to music on it with the headphones, and you get a call on your smartphone, you need not take down your headphones to take the call, as they can connect to both the devices at the same time. No need to switch between Bluetooth signals either, you can seamlessly work with multiple devices at the same time. Neat!
When it comes to battery life, Sony claims that the Sony WH-1000XM4 can provide 30 hours of playback. On our test bench, it did almost that. We squeezed about 29 hours (of music and gaming playback) over a span of a week. Before we had to put them to charge. Over that, in case you are running out of battery juice, you can charge the headphones for 10 minutes and it will give you 5 hours of playback time.
And yes, the same cool smart feather touch gesture controls do come back on the Sony WH-1000XM4. You can just put your hand on the right year cup to hear if someone is talking to you or swipe and slide on it for volume controls or skip to the previous or next track. We took them out for a walk and they really work well, the ambient noise cancellation (as said) is brilliant. And the best part is that with the sense engine inside the headphones learn about your surrounding and will let important announcement seep in. It works well on the road as you can hear the car honks so that no mishap happens. However, since we are not travelling so Airport use was out of the question, but otherwise a job well done Sony!
Verdict
Overall, Sony did a mighty fine job in bringing a top-class noise cancelling headphone. Sony WH-1000XM4 are a worthy upgrade to the last years XM3’s and are absolutely rocking. However, the Japanese major does ask for a shiny penny for these headphones. You would need to shell out Rs 29,990 for them. That some might find on the higher side of things. If you can afford them, these are best in class headphones for all-day use.
Pros:
Good looks
Premium sound
Excellent noise cancellation
Cons
Price could have been better

Moreover, OPPO A93 is equipped with a 6.43in off-screen AMOLED FHD+ dual perforated display with a screen-to-body ratio of up to 90.7 percent. Recently, OnePlus launched its new budget offering in the India market. Yes, today we are here with the much-awaited review of the OnePlus Nord. The device delivers a similar Android experience just like OnePlus 8 and it also borrows a lot of similarities with its flagship line up. Nord is first in the company’s “affordable smartphone product line”, which comes in three distinct configurations. Though it has taken some shortcuts when it comes to SoC and the build quality, it still feels like a solid phone. OnePlus Nord price starts at Rs 24,999 for the 64GB variant and is Amazon exclusive. So, if you are hesitant to own a OnePlus device because of its expensive price tag then you should read our review of the OnePlus Nord as it brings you to a much closer mid-range segment price and performance. OnePlus Nord Design and DisplayThe OnePlus Nord looks decent with on-paper specifications but first allows us to give you a closer look of the smartphone’s form factor and display performance. This time also the OnePlus smartphone has a glass on the back, but instead of a metal frame, it has used plastic. Subtle changes in the design give it a very fresh look. We got to lay around with the Gray Onyx colour, which we liked. There is another (Marble Blue) colour variant available, but we do think the company could have given more colour options to the users.Built-wise it has a Gorilla Glass 5 protection on the front as well as the back. And to bring the cost down (as we said) this time the company has provided a plastic frame instead of the metal one which it usually offers on all its flagship devices. There is also a signature slider but it lacks a 3.5mm headphone jack or the support for expandable memory.More on the design, up front it has a 6.44-inch full-HD+ Fluid AMOLED display with 90Hz refresh rate having 1,080×2,400 pixels of resolution and 20:9 aspect ratio. Which we have rarely seen being offered by any other brand at his price. On the right side of the frame, you get the slider and power button while the volume button has been given on the left. At the bottom, there is a nano-SIM, a USB Type-C port for charging and, of course, a downward-firing speaker.Altogether there are six cameras on the OnePlus Nord. Two on the front and four cameras on the back of the Nord. The rear quad camera set up is aligned vertically inside a pill-shaped module positioned on the top left corner. There is an OnePlus logo, which is right in the middle of the phone and the branding is done a little above the lower frame. The device ships with a silicone back cover, a charging cable and few stickers. When it comes to its display performance, the 90Hz refresh rate driven screen feels smoother and it’s a blessing. Apart from gaming, scrolling news, Instagram and Facebook feed is buttery as well as effortless. Recently, we heard that the device has come across some issues concerning the display. We have come to know that about the red tint issue under darkness along with a horizontal line near the pill-shaped front camera cut out, but we are glad to inform you that our unit is completely glitch-free. We did not find any of those issues here.In case you are facing any such issue do not hesitate to ask for a replacement from the manufacturer as soon as possible, Oneplus is doing that for all its customers. The AMOLED display also offers an excellent contrast ratio and the brightness is sufficient enough to be used under bright sunlight. And yes, there is a dark mode that has been perfectly implemented on the phone.Performance and cameraThe dual-SIM (Nano) OnePlus Nord is powered by octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G SoC, which is an excellent mid-range chipset, paired with Adreno 620 GPU and up to 12GB LPDDR4x RAM with up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage that doesn’t support expansion via a microSD card. So we recommend you to go for the 128GB or 256GB storage as the 64GB variant might prove inadequate after a year. The device usually handles normal to heavy usage with ease but not as fast as the OnePlus flagship phones. On the brighter side, the Qualcomm’s cheapest that comes here is integrated with 5G modem in the price range. On the gaming front, the 765G and the 90Hz refresh rate screen proves to be a great combo, which brings out a smooth playing experience. We extensively played Call of duty and Asphalt 9 on this phone under highest graphics settings and it handled them smoothly as well. We did not come across any lag or touch latency and heating issues either as it is supported by 180Hz touch sampling rate. The device is a multitasker and it is smooth and fast at whatever you throw at it. OnePlus Nord runs on Android 10-based OxygenOS 10.5. The UI is much similar to what we get on the flagship devices, which are clean, bloat-free, customisable and portrays Stock Android-like experience that also allows changing the UI’s theme colour as well. Here you get a call recording feature on the phone in the dialler app to record all your incoming as well as outgoing calls. To access it, swipe to the second panel on which you have received a call, but the caller will get alert when the recording begins as it has an audible voice prompt. In addition to this, it also lets you hide apps as well as a file that you wish to keep safe. Moreover, it also lets you turn on ambient display features. You can find this feature in the setting app to customise the feature when it needs to be activated. Besides the dark theme, you can also customise the power button too.And yes, for the gamers the Game Space on the phone will help you organise all your games at one place, which also offers Fnatic mode to restrict all the background activities. As we mentioned earlier, the OnePlus Nord does not have the option to further expand the memory but those who are on a tight budget can go for the 64GB variant one where you get additional storage on the OnePlus cloud. All users get 5GB of free cloud storage to back up photos, videos and lots more. And last but not the least, the most useful feature on the phone is of FileDash. Users can easily transfer large files to any phone that uses Wi-Fi and is comparatively quicker than Bluetooth. The fingerprint sensor on the phone works great ten out of ten times, while the face unlock does its job well too.As you already know that the device comes with a quad rear camera setup it includes a 48-megapixel Sony IMX586 primary sensor with an f/1.75 aperture with optical image stabilisation (OIS) support. Moreover, it comprises of a secondary 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens that has a field of view (FoV) of 119 degrees with an f/2.25 aperture. For macro shooting, OnePlus Nord has a 2-megapixel macro lens and a 5-megapixel depth shooter both having an f/2.4 aperture. The macro lens on the phone lacked colours as well as details and we think it is of less use. But the 5-megapixel depth sensor does a pretty decent job with impressive bokeh effect. The edge detection is also perfect as it delivers nice subject focus with a superior background too. The pictures taken from the primary 48-megapixel sensor are full of details, but the colour looks unnatural. Also, it gives too much weight to the contrast while the images are over-saturated. Overall, they look good and spunky, but saturation could have been better. On the other hand, the ultra-wide images delivered good pictures with decent colours and details. The only complaint here is that they came out to be slightly darker and not as vibrant as the primary sensor.Just an FYI, OnePlus Nord is the company’s first phone with a dual selfie camera. It has a 32-megapixel Sony IMX616 primary sensor with an f/2.45 aperture and an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens that has an FoV of 105 degrees and f/2.45 aperture. The colour and details of the selfies taken from the primary lens comes out as pleasant as one can be. The colours are vibrant and the skin looks natural. While the ultra-wide-angle selfies are much similar to the ones taken through the primary camera. However, on zooming, we realised the images lack the detail and sharpness to the ones from the 32-megapixel sensor. Now here comes the best part of the camera, the device is at par when it comes to low light photography. We tested out at a few different locations and to our surprise, the images have a good amount of details. However, there is a dedicated nightscape mode on the OnePlus Nord that helps to improve the visibility and details of low light conditions. In terms of videography, the phone maxes out at 4K 30fps, which is often seen on the premium ones. The stabilisation works great here. It is perfect for the vloggers and travel enthusiasts and same goes with the selfie camera. It too can shoot up to 4K resolution videos at 30fps, however, there is no stabilisation feature here. All in all. the cameras on the OnePlus Nord are above average and nothing world-shattering. Not that we thought it would be, but it is at par compared to other smartphones in this mid-tier segment. Personally, speaking, the cameras on the Nord could have been a lot better. Which can be the case as OnePlus does improves cameras performance over time with the new software updates. In terms of battery life, OnePlus Nord ran for about a day and a half on a single charge. But on heavy usage, if you are a heavy user who plays lots of games, keeps checking social media profile and watches lots of videos, then the battery life will drop down to a day. During our test, it took an hour to charge it from zero to 100 percent.VerdictThis is the company’s most affordable device with top features which you get on flagship smartphones. The audio output is average from the single firing bottom speaker with a decent 4,115mAh battery with support for 30W Warp charge. At the moment it does not support wireless charging. The device is the best smartphone at its price and is the best option for those looking for a cheaper OnePlus device. OnePlus Nord has all the ingredients to be the top contender in the mid-segment and is a worthy buy.

Alexa is making it easier than ever to navigate, stay connected, and be entertained on-the-go, while helping you focus on the road ahead. Make the most of your drive with Auto Mode, a new feature that makes Alexa in the vehicle even better. As per Amazon, “This Auto Mode is rolling out to Android and iOS in the coming weeks, and will be available in the U.S., Canada, Germany, France, India, Italy, Spain, UK, Australia and New Zealand.”
Auto Mode in the Alexa app lets you see and do more with your Echo Auto and supported Alexa auto accessories by turning your phone into a smart, driver-friendly display that enhances Alexa’s in-vehicle voice experience.
According to an official blog post, “Auto Mode was designed to help you stay focused on the road with easy to read visuals, large touch targets and intuitive features and shortcuts for the most common Alexa interactions used in the vehicle like navigating to saved locations, placing calls to contacts and Alexa devices, and playing recent media.”
Mind you! Auto Mode consists of four screens — Home, Navigation, Communication, and Play — and a persistent menu bar allows users to quickly switch between them. The Auto Mode home screen is designed to enable one-touch access to the Alexa users’ frequent actions, with shortcuts to play and pause your current music source, navigate to home or work, and to make a call. The users can simply tap on the shortcut to initiate the action or ask Alexa, for example “Alexa, continue playing my music.”

The users can switch back to the Alexa app using only your voice by simply asking, “Alexa, go back to the Alexa app.” They can also ask Alexa to help you find someplace new, for example, “Alexa, find nearby coffee shops.” As Alexa reads back the responses, Auto Mode displays a simplified list showing only the most relevant information, allowing them to either use the voice to make a selection or simply touch on it to begin navigation.
Moreover, the Communicate screen helps one to place a call with much ease. A user can drop in or make an announcement to his/ her Alexa devices. They can ask Alexa to initiate the action or touch their selection, and Auto Mode will provide an easy to read list of recently placed calls and devices. If one wants to drop in on their family to let them know they are headed home, they can say “Alexa, Drop In on my Kitchen Echo Show,” or simply tap on the screen and Alexa will do the rest.
Besides these features, the Play screen showcases the most recent media played using any Alexa device and a convenient button to play or pause, along with a list of most recently played media. Selecting any of the items in the list starts playing the media and brings up the Now Playing screen, which provides additional controls specific to the type of media being played and the service used. A user can stay entertained while on-the-go just by asking Alexa or using Auto Mode’s shortcuts and easy touch controls.

Google has now announced that it will be continuing its unlimited Meet calls (up to 24 hours) in the free version through March 31, 2021, for Gmail accounts.
“That’s why we made Google Meet, our premium video conferencing product, free for everyone back in April. When we re-engineered the service we built for secure business meetings and made it available to all, we also made calls unlimited (well, the limit is really 24 hours, but I’ve yet to hit the limit) through September 30, so that people could enjoy the same benefits as our business users with their existing Google Account. From book clubs, band practices, and dance parties–millions of you have turned to Meet to connect safely over the video,” said Samir Pradhan, Group Product Manager, Google Meet.
Google has also added a ton of experiences to Meet to make connecting more fun and more productive, too. You can now see your family on the big screen when you cast your calls to your TV, or join hands-free on your Nest Hub Max. Jump on the call without worrying about the holiday wrapping paper mess behind you with background blur, or take trivia night to the next level by seeing 49 of your competitors (and yourself) at the same time. You can even keep score using our collaborative digital whiteboard.
The tech giant hopes these updates will help you do more at home, at work and everywhere you choose. If you haven’t tried Meet yet, you can access it right from Gmail, get the app or head to meet.google.com from your browser to start a call.
Earlier, Google Duo has announced that it is rolling out a Beta on Android TV in the coming weeks. With Google Duo, the tech giant revealed that you can initiate one-on-one and group calls from your TV, and if your TV doesn’t have a camera built-in, you can simply plug in a USB camera.
Besides Google Duo, Google Meet on Cast can help you turn any room in your house into your own personal conference room, taking advantage of your TV or a Smart Display. “Whether you want to step away from the notifications on your laptop or phone to be more present in a meeting or you are on mute in a larger meeting and want to concentrate on your task at hand, casting to your TV can help you be more productive and stay focused,” said TJ Varghese, Group Product Manager, Google Meet hardware.
The blog post further added that Meet and Cast can also work together to simplify distance learning. Students can view their classmates and lesson plans on the big screen while working from their laptops, and teachers can get a broader view of their students on a call.
In order to get started, all you need is to have a Google account, update to the latest version of Chrome and ensure that your Chromecast device has the latest firmware installed. Google Cast functionality is available for all Meet users, and casting works on Chromecast, TVs with built-in Chromecasts, and Nest displays.
Apart from TVs, Duo and Meet also work seamlessly with Nest Hub Max. The Google blog post added that you can simply say “Hey Google, join my next meeting” or “Hey Google, start a group call” and jump right into the video hands-free, staying productive from a separate device on your desk.
