Realme CEO “caught” using an iPhone

In the past, many Brand Ambassadors have goofed up by posting tweets through iPhones endorsing other brands. Following this trend, the latest ambassador was Madhav Sheth, Realme India’s CEO. Realme is trending in the news for the big release of the Realme X2 Pro and Realme 5s on November 20 in New Delhi. However, right now the buzz is not on the phones, but instead on the Realme India CEO, Madhav Sheth. The now deleted tweet was sent from an iPhone, which Twitterati realised and took screenshots of. The users spotted the “Twitter for iPhone” tag right below the message. As a response to all the trolling, Madhav Sheth responded on Monday with a new tweet: “Having used all the renowned flagship phones over the last few days. I can assure you that #realmeX2Pro is not just the #FastestChargingFlagship but also has many more category best features in the lot. #FasterSharperBolder.” Madhav Sheth’s tweet is more shocking, as this tweet is not from the brand ambassador but the CEO itself is totally unexpected. Madhav Sheth’s witty comeback sets precedence to other brands who have faced similar issues before Realme. In what has become common occurrence, brand ambassadors often goof up while tweeting. For example, The Brand Ambassador of the OnePlus brand, Robert Downey JR of Iron man fame, was found tweeting from an iPhone to which he smartly responded “Well, I guess it’s time to upgrade my assistant to a new OnePlus 7 pro so mistakes don’t happen again,” after the post went viral. While causing issues to the person tweeted and the companies involved, it is a definite laugh out loud moment for all of us who get entertainment from such goof-ups. Before this Huawei handle was also used by one of this social media employee who posted a tweet using an iPhone, after which news broke that two employees have been sacked because of the same. Beware: New threat for WhatsApp users found in Malicious MP4 videos

The CERT (Computer Emergency Response Team), a government cyber security agency, reported a “high” rated vulnerability of the popular messaging platform WhatsApp. This allowed hackers to target phones by sending videos in MP4 format. “Stack-based buffer overview vulnerability exists in WhatsApp due to improper parsing of elementary system metadata of an MP4 file; a remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a specially crafted MP4 file to the target system.” CERT said in a notification on their website. CERT went on further to say, that the file could “allow the remote attacker to cause Remote Code Execution or Denial of Service condition”, which could adversely affect the system further. Facebook, WhatsApp’s parent company, has now issued a security warning about this threat, listing out the various versions of Android, iOS and Windows Phone that are at risk. This description is very similar to the Pegasus spyware developed by Israeli company NSO Group, a problem that WhatsApp has claimed to have solved in its latest update. The Pegasus virus entered the phone through a missed call and gave attackers unlimited access to all the data available on the device. Now, beware of MP4 videos on WhatsApp from unknown numbers to escape from being a victim to the new threat. An attacker can use a person’s cell number to send a video file through WhatsApp and install a malicious file into the phone’s system. This issue is said to exist on both, the individual and business versions of the popular messaging platform. The report of a second virus, which can violate a user’s privacy so close to the Pegasus is very concerning. We highly recommend our readers to update to the latest version of the WhatsApp app to stay secure from malicious viruses, which are aiming to violate user’s privacy. Also, not just WhatsApp, do update any other App you use on your smartphone. Often App makers send out a new update that has a critical hack or bug fix. So, keeping all the apps updated on your smartphone is good for you and shuts down loopholes and back doorways to malicious attacks. Apple removed all vaping apps from the Apple App Store

iPhone’s manufacturer Apple banned 181 vaping apps from its App Store across the world. This big move came after warning from health experts when 42 people have died from lung illness caused by vaping. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, these people were involved in using cartridges containing THC although many of them used nicotine cartridges. In June this year, the company stopped accepting new vaping apps and it never permitted the sale of e-cigarette refills or vaping cartridges directly on its platform via the app. But many of them allow the users to control the temperature as well as lightening and heating of vape pens, also these apps provided news related to vaping, vaping related social networks and games. Apple in a statement to a news platform Verge said, “We have updated our App Store Review Guidelines to reflect that apps encouraging or facilitating the use of these products are not permitted. As of today, these apps are no longer available to download.” In their statement to another publisher, Axios, Apple said, “We take great care to curate the App Store as a trusted place for customers, particularly youth, to download apps. We’re constantly evaluating apps, and consulting the latest evidence, to determine risks to users’ health and well-being.” As per the company, they have updated the Guidelines of App Store Review to give a message to the apps that promoting and facilitating the use of e-cigarette or vaping devices are not permitted. Also, these apps are no longer available on the App Store for download. This big move also helps the company to decrease youth exposure to e-cigarette marketing as well as it will also discourage them from using these products. According to CDC vaping has attributed at least 42 deaths and more than 2,000 lung-related diseases around the US. TikTok tests in-app monetisation through links in bio

TikTok is one of the most popular video platforms when it comes to Android and iOS Apps. A news report recently suggested that popular application TikTok, previously called Musical.ly. is going to soon launch ways of monetising it as a platform. With more than over a billion users, TikTok is a craze amongst teenagers who lip sync and create performances, which are shown to other users on the platform.

Currently, Influencers on TikTok make their money thanks to their audience. The influencers promote brands and products in their videos, motivating their fans to buy and use the same product. The influencers upload TikTok videos on Instagram, with the link to purchase items on their “Instagram bios” and through “swipe up” stories on their Instagram pages.

To help the users on its own platform and promote monetisation of the App, TikTok has currently launched, for US users, an option to add links to their bios and swipe to access URL options. This makes it easy for influencers to promote products directly from TikTok. Because of this ease in making money, more and more users will start using the TikTok application directly and not flock to competing apps.

TikTok has confirmed that these two features being out is part of an experiment to improve app experience for users.

As a spokesperson said, “We’re always experimenting with new ways to improve the app experience for our users. Ultimately, we’re focused on ways to inspire creativity, bring joy, and add value to our community.”

We for one are excited to see where this move will go if implemented to TikTok’s users all over the world, and where will this take TikTok in the social commerce race. This will surely motivate more youngsters and video content creators to come to the App and produce more and better content. Just like YouTube, one would be able to make a quick buck on TikTok soon, world over.

Amazon Echo Dot with clock review: A more intelligent localized Alexa is what you get

Amazon has been doing great with its voice-based AI/Assistant — Alexa. Integrated with various devices including some of the latest smartphones, we quite liked how it has become more intelligent and keeps learning. This time we did no test Alexa with a smartphone or smartwatch, but did in the new Amazon Echo Dot with clock. This is what we could make of the device.

Design

Amazon Echo Dot with clock is a puck-sized smart speaker that is very similar to the third generation of Amazon Echo Dot. The volume and mic buttons are still on the top and a LED ring circumferences the top part. The cloth mesh is still there around the speaker, but it is available in just one colour. We were hoping to see at least one more colour option. The rear has the audio port as well as the charging port.amazon echo dot The major design difference between the third-gen of Amazon Echo Dot and Amazon Echo Dot with clock is actually the clock. It is a great addition if you ask us and now this smart speaker becomes an even better option for your bedroom or kitchen, where you might want to place it. The clock has the ability to dim or brighten itself according to the ambient light, another plus in our books.

Amazon Echo Dot with clock performance

The Amazon Echo Dot with clock becomes a very interesting device since it has Alexa. Which keeps becoming better as time goes by. It is learning new skills and now can even speak in Hindi. Setting it up, like always, is easy. We did try to converse with it in Hindi and 8 out of ten times it understood us and had an answer to our query. As time goes by this will also become better, we are sure. The Indian accent is a great touch.echo dot with clock The buttons on the Amazon Echo Dot with clock works well and the LED ring indicator let you know when it is on mute and when it is not. The sound is very similar to the last-gen with slightly better voice clarity. As always, you can control the connected wireless device with voice commands and 9 out 10 times were able to do that from up to a distance of 25 feet. If you go beyond 30 feet then it struggles a bit. Verdict and Final Words The Amazon Echo Dot with clock needs to be connected to the internet at all times for it to answer all your questions and work. Which in some homes might be a drawback where you have weaker wi-fi connections. Also, it does not have a battery inside, which mean at the time of power cut Alexa also goes to sleep. But this is an issue with all smart speakers and not just Amazon Echo speakers. However, what is bright about the Amazon Echo Dot with clock is Alexa, it is by far the best AI on the block. It becomes a family member in your home. The small size and affordable price of Rs 4,999, this smart speaker makes it a great addition for your bedroom or kitchen. Microsoft is ending support for Cortana app on Android and iOS

There are so many Voice assistant platforms available in the market right now and the most well-known are Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple’s Siri, but there are other companies in the market that have their own voice assistant service and one of them is Microsoft’s Cortana. Cortana is a voice assistant platform for Windows 10 Operating System, which was released in 2015. Now the company has decided to discontinue the Cortana app service on Android as well as iOS platforms. Microsoft will end the service of the Cortana mobile app on Android and iOS on January 31st, 2020. The company has confirmed that after the mentioned date the app will be pulled off in most of the markets like the UK, Australia, Germany, Mexico, China, Spain, Canada as well as India. However, users will still be able to access the app in the US. But it is not yet confirmed until when it will continue to operate in the US after the last date. “After January 31st, 2020, the Cortana mobile app on your phone will no longer be supported and there will be an updated version of Microsoft Launcher with Cortana removed. “ Microsoft posted a new support article in the UK, Canada and Australia. Those who are unaware, Microsoft released Cortana for Android and iOS in December 2015. The app service was specifically designed by the company to connect Windows 10 PCs and mobile phones. The app is also used to access the settings and update the software of the devices such as the Surface Headphones, which is another Microsoft device. So we are a bit confused about how the headphones users will be able to access its features in the future. “To make your personal digital assistant as helpful as possible, we’re integrating Cortana into your Microsoft 365 productivity apps. As part of this evolution, on January 31st, 2020, we’re ending support for the Cortana app on Android and iOS in your market. At that point, the Cortana content you created–such as reminders and lists–will no longer function in the Cortana mobile app or Microsoft Launcher, but can still be accessed through Cortana on Windows.”, the company said. According to Microsoft, Cortana reminders, lists and tasks will automatically get synced to the Microsoft To-Do app, which can be downloaded to the phone for free. Huawei releases Mate X sans Google apps

Tech giant, Huawei, is selling its first folding smartphone with Google apps or US made processors, in accordance with sanctions imposed by Washington. The Mate X, which folds out to 14.6 cm wide went on sale last Friday on Huawei’s official online store priced at 16,999 Yuan.

The device competes with Samsung’s galaxy Fold launched last September. Huawei is China’s first global tech brand, and is struggling to preserve its business after the US imposed controls on sale of American components and technology to the company, deeming it a “Security risk”.

The company is the 2nd smartphone brand right behind Samsung. And is the current biggest manufacturer of network gear for mobile carriers.

Huawei denies the accusations made by US that the company facilitates Chinese spying. The current administration is lobbying its allies to exclude Huawei equipment as they prepare to update to next generation telecom networks.

The Mate X uses Huawei’s Kirin 980chipset instead of the Qualcomm or other US suppliers. The phone comes loaded with Chinese alternatives to Google music, maps and the other Google apps.

Talking about the phone’s features, the screen opens up to 5.8-inches x 6.4-inches. The Mate X uses the Huawei’s EMUI 9 OS, which is based on Google’s Android. The company is not using the open-source version of Android, because, if the US Sanctions are fully enforced then the company will loose access to all of Google’s popular apps, making it difficult for them to compete with Samsung.

American officials say that companies might be allowed to export some parts to Huawei, but it will need to be properly licensed. Huawei phones in China use the local music and other apps as Google services aren’t licensed in Beijing. The company has kept mum about its plans to sell the Mate X outside of China and about the sales forecast of the Mate X.

Huawei has unveiled a smartphone operating system in August, called the Harmony OS that can replace Android if necessary. Company officials however, have said that they want to continue working with American vendors.

Huawei’s sales earlier rose 24.4% in the first 9 months of 2019 to 610.8 Billion. The chairman, Liang Hua warned in July that they would face difficulties in the second half of the year.

As a mark of appreciation, Huawei will be paying bonuses of 2 billion Yuan to 90,000 employees as thanks for helping to cope with the US sanctions. All of its 1,80,000 workforce will also receive an extra month’s salary.

Google will not just translate, but will help you pronounce difficult words too

Google has released a new function in Google translate that will help users practice difficult words while providing their meanings. This new function is a test and only works for US English as of now. This is a great update for people looking to practice their English pronunciation. Google will also be adding imagery into their dictionary to assist visual learning. As Google explains it, the previous version of translate only offered a word’s pronunciation to users. Now, however, users can both hear and pronounce the word into the phone’s microphone for feedback on pronunciation. This feature currently supports American English, with a Spanish option soon to follow. This feature works on advance speech recognition technology, which converts spoken words by separating them into individual sound recordings.  Later, through machine learning, it checks the user’s pronunciation with the expected pronunciation. It gives the user this information as feedback later. “Studies have shown that practicing how to say a word can be helpful for remembering it, especially when you’re learning a new language. Previously, when you searched for things like “how to pronounce quokka,” you could play audio and hear the word. With the new pronunciation feature, you’ll be able to also practice saying “quokka” into your phone’s microphone and receive feedback on what, if anything, can be adjusted in your pronunciation,” the Google blog post says. Some words will get a visual representation with their translations and/or definitions as additional content. This feature will be implemented first with nouns and expanding from there. In other words, when a user searches for a word or a definition, an image may pop up to make the message clearer. Images will be featuring in Google’s dictionary and will be available in English and all its translations very soon. We for one, hope this new feature in Google translate will help people learn better by practicing visualising and pronouncing new words to learn a different language. It is a great way for people to learn difficult words too and understand US English better. Realme-5s smartphone teased by the Company, to possess 5,000mAh Battery

The Realme 5s is expected to be an upgraded version of Realme 5 that was launched in August earlier this year. The Realme 5s will come with a 5,000 mAh battery, the same as its predecessor. The India CEO of the company, Madhav Sheth, announced this recently. He also mentioned the presence of a 48-megapixel quad camera setup on the phone’s backpanel. Even after his statement, it still leaves us puzzled about what are the key differences between the Realme 5 and the Realme 5s. The Realme 5s is all set to be released on November 20 with the Realme X2 Pro. And till then the company is tight lipped about the rest of the smartphones features. “As promised, the second surprise launching on 20th Nov. is the all new #realme5s with 48MP Quad Camera and 5000mAh battery,” Madhav Sheth said in a tweet. Apart from these two features, we do not know anything from official sources about the Realme 5s. Currently, it is possible that the Realme 5s might turn out be an exact copy of the Realme 5 with an addition of a 48-megapixel main shooter. Other possibilities are RAM and storage upgrades. Talking about the Realme 5 launched earlier in August this year, it possesses a 6.5-inch HD+ screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 SoC and a 5,000mAh battery. The phone also had a quad rear camera setup that is headlined by a 12-megapixel primary camera. The other three cameras are an 8-megapixel wide-angle shooter, a 2-megapixel macro camera, and a 2-megapixel portrait camera. According to reports, the Realme 5s will be a better and improved version of its predecessor, which was released earlier this year. We now know that the main camera offers a 48 MP sensor compared to the mere 12 MP on Realme 5. We believe this will be a key difference between the phones. As said, the Realme 5s will be having a 48MP quad camera setup, while everything else remains similar to the Realme 5. This means that the Realme 5s will also have a Snapdragon 665 SoC. There are also speculations that the Realme 5s will come with a 6.5-inch HD+ display and Corning Gorilla Glass 3+ on top. We are sure many fans are looking forward to the launch, thankfully for them, November 20 is not too far away. Our Take

If we talk about the foldable design Motorola Razr looks exactly similar to the iconic version of Moto Razr but with a 6.2-inch flexible OLED HD+ screen. Whereas Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with a 7.3-inch dynamic AMOLED Infinity Flex display. The phones when folded carry a 2.7-inch Quick View display and a 4.6-inch HD+ Super AMOLED Display respectively. As per your preference if you want a phone with a larger display then you can choose the latter one and if you are looking for a much compact version then go for the Motorola Razr. Now if we compare the cameras Fold has six cameras whereas Razr has two cameras. As for the pricing, Motorola has not launched the phone in India and also did not revealed the Indian pricing so we should wait till January when the company officially brings the revamped version of the iconic smartphone in the country. This new browser offers online browsing experience like never before

With online privacy becoming a growing concern for the modern internet user, a new web browser has been launched. This browser is currently available on Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and iOS for free. The Brave browser, launched by Brave Software offers complete privacy. The browser comes with built-in ad blockers while simultaneously preventing websites from tracking the user. The Brave browser comes with in-built anti trackers and ad blockers. The browser also claims that it does not store user’s data. Over that, the browser possesses a dashboard, which shows the number of ads and trackers the browser has blocked during an internet browsing session. “Browse confidently with default settings that block phishing, malware, and malvertising. Also, plugins, which have proven to be a security risk, are disabled by default. Brave Sync, currently in beta, can be enabled to encrypt and synchronize your preferred settings and bookmarks. However, Brave does not have the keys to decrypt your data,” the company said on its website. Apart from the extended security feature, the browser promises 3x to 6x faster browsing than its main competitors, Chrome and Firefox. To prove this, the company has also posted a video comparing the browsing speed on the three browsers. The beta version had more than 8 million monthly users who rated the browser positively. In today’s day and age, built-in ad-blockers are a rare find amongst browsers. Most browsers offer ad blockers as an extension. Brave is different as it offers a plausible solution in the form of Brave Ads, a form of ads that pay you to view them without accessing your data. Brave also has a scheme under which users can also tip creators and contribute to monthly websites. By turning on “brave rewards”, a user can earn tokens by watching ads. These tokens can be used to donate to your favourite content creator or websites. Brave ads will appear as push notifications instead of the banners we see on all other browsers. Brave says that the ads being shown will be targeted to the participating user and that none of the user’s private information will leave the browser. The user can also control the number of ads they are shown during each hour. A recent bug exposed that Facebook is using your iPhone’s camera

There have been numerous reports that Facebook has been violating the privacy of its users. Even the US congress had questioned them about the same. Now another bug has been reported, (we still do not know if it was an actual bug or deliberate) which enables Facebook to use the camera on your Apple iPhone to scout on you. Thanks to a user, Joshua Maddux who reported this bug in the iOS version of the mobile app on Twitter. We now know about a new bug on the iOS 13.2.2 version’s Facebook app. He has shared footage where viewers can see his camera actively working in the background without him starting it up. Maddux claims that he saw the same issue on five iPhones running iOS 13.2.2. We also found out that users didn’t see it on iOS 12 or iOS 13.1.3. This issue only crops up if the Facebook app is given access to your device’s camera. Which is misuse of a user’s privacy policy. Facebook On the 13th of November, Facebook gave a statement calling the camera recording as a bug and that they are working on fixing it. “We recently discovered our iOS app incorrectly launched in landscape. In fixing that last week in v246 we inadvertently introduced a bug where the app partially navigates to the camera screen when a photo is tapped, we have no evidence of photos/videos uploaded due to this.” Facebook VP of Integrity Guy Rosen tweeted. This privacy issue is concerning considering the number of Facebook users who have iPhones running on iOS 13.2.2. We sure hope that this bug will be fixed soon, if you are on this version of iOS on your iPhone, then our recommendation is to keep the Facebook app in a dormant state or remove it for the time being. Till there is a permanent fix for the issue.
