SpaceX Crew 2 mission: NASA Astronauts safely splash down in Gulf of Mexico

In the first splashdown of an American crew spacecraft in 45 years, SpaceX’s Crew Dragon, carrying NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Douglas Hurley, splashed down in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida at 2:48 p.m. EDT on August 2, 2020 for the first time in a commercially built and operated American crew spacecraft, returning from the International Space Station to complete a test flight that marks a new era in human spaceflight.

Mind you! Behnken and Hurley’s return was the first splashdown for American astronauts since Thomas Stafford, Vance Brand, and Donald “Deke” Slayton landed in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Hawaii on July 24, 1975, at the end of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project.

According to NASA, The spacecraft was recovered by SpaceX and brought aboard the recovery ship ‘Go Navigator’ after returning from the International Space Station on completing a test flight that marks a new era in human spaceflight. After returning to shore, the astronauts immediately will fly back to Houston.

“Welcome home, Bob and Doug! Congratulations to the NASA and SpaceX teams for the incredible work to make this test flight possible. It’s a testament to what we can accomplish when we work together to do something once thought impossible. Partners are key to how we go farther than ever before and take the next steps on daring missions to the Moon and Mars,” said NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

NASA’s SpaceX Demo-2 test flight was launched May 30 from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After reaching orbit, Behnken and Hurley named their Crew Dragon spacecraft “Endeavour” as a tribute to the first space shuttle each astronaut had flown aboard.

“Congratulations to the entire SpaceX and NASA team on such an extraordinary mission. We could not be more proud to see Bob and Doug safely back home—we all appreciate their dedication to this mission and helping us start the journey towards carrying people regularly to low Earth orbit and on to the Moon and Mars. And I really hope they enjoyed the ride,” said SpaceX President and Chief Operating Officer Gwynne Shotwell.

Behnken and Hurley participated in a number of scientific experiments, spacewalks and public engagement events during their 62 days aboard station. Overall, the astronaut duo spent 64 days in orbit, completed 1,024 orbits around Earth and traveled 27,147,284 statute miles. The astronauts contributed more than 100 hours of time to supporting the orbiting laboratory’s investigations.

The Demo-2 test flight is part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, which has worked with the U.S. aerospace industry to launch astronauts on American rockets and spacecraft from American soil to the space station for the first time since 2011. This is SpaceX’s final test flight and is providing data on the performance of the Falcon 9 rocket, Crew Dragon spacecraft and ground systems, as well as in-orbit, docking, splashdown, and recovery operations.

The completion of Demo-2 and the review of the mission and spacecraft pave the way for NASA to certify SpaceX’s crew transportation system for regular flights carrying astronauts to and from the space station. SpaceX is readying the hardware for the first rotational mission, called Crew-1, later this year. This mission would occur after NASA certification, which is expected to take about six weeks.

Mind you! The goal of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is safe, reliable and cost-effective transportation to and from the International Space Station. This could allow for additional research time and increase the opportunity for discovery aboard humanity’s testbed for exploration, including helping NASA prepare for human exploration of the Moon and Mars.

Technology to play integral role in achieving Diversity and Inclusion: Intel and Lenovo research

The first release of a new global research report from Intel and Lenovo finds that technology will play an integral role in achieving diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the workplace of the future.

“Intel has a longstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion. We believe that transparency is key, and our goal is to see our representation mirror the markets and customers we serve. Just as we apply our engineering mindset to create the world’s leading technological innovations, we do the same with our D&I strategies, using data to inform our decisions and sharing it transparently to drive clear accountability and deliver results across the industry,” said Barbara Whye, chief diversity & inclusion officer and vice president of Social Impact and Human Resources at Intel.

“We know that to truly progress D&I, it takes companies working together, and being a global company, this work can’t be limited to the US only. That’s why with both companies sharing a rich history of collaboration, we decided to extend our partnership and conduct a global survey,” added Barbara.

The study explores how people around the world view D&I in their personal and professional lives, and their perspective on the role technology plays to address systematic inequities, create more access and enable growth.

The findings within the technology chapter suggest that, if a more diverse and inclusive workplace is the goal, technology has the potential to get us there, as it facilitates human connection, understanding, and ultimately, empathy.

According to the research by Intel and Lenovo, nearly 89 percent of respondents in China and 75 percent in the United States say a company’s diversity and inclusion policies are “extremely” or “very” important when deciding where to apply and whether to accept an offer.

In the US, parents are more likely than non-parents to view flexible work hours as a prominent impact of technology in the workplace by a 12-point margin. Respondents from higher income brackets are more likely to agree that tech plays an “extremely large role” in improving diversity and inclusion in the workplace.

More than 80 percent of employees in Brazil and China agree that artificial intelligence can be used to make the workplace more diverse and inclusive, as do half of respondents in the US, UK and Germany.

Lenovo and Intel’s Diversity and Inclusion in the Global Workplace study explores the attitudes of approximately 5,096 respondents across five key geographic markets of China, the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom and Brazil between December 19, 2019 and January 7, 2020.

Google releases a new Android Auto 5.5 version: Here’s what you must know

It seems that Google is trying introduces some interestingly features to help you focus on the road. Yes, the tech giant has released a brand-new version of Android Auto. An APK teardown by Softpedia has helped us delve deep into what’s new being offered under Android Auto 5.5 + version as Google is still tight-lipped to reveal any details.

This latest update to Android Auto would enable Google to solve issues easily as the updated version will start collecting diagnostics data from the car. Furthermore, the app bar in Android Auto will also witness some changes.

Know how Google works to improve user privacy in digital advertising

With a vision to increase transparency into how digital advertising works and ensure that people’s choices about the use of their data are respected, Google has shared updates on its work in these areas, including new tools that provide people more information about the ads they see.

“We’re also introducing new resources for marketers and publishers that offer guidance on how to navigate today’s privacy environment, along with real-world examples from brands and media companies who are delivering effective, privacy-forward ad experiences that use data responsibly,” Mike Schulman, VP, Ads Privacy and Safety.

For many years Google has offered a feature called ‘Why this ad’, where from an icon in a digital ad, users can get more information on some of the factors that were used to select the ad for them, or choose to stop seeing that ad. There are over 15 million user interactions per day with ‘Why this ad’ as people seek to learn more about and control the ads they see, and Google recently extended this feature to ads on connected TVs.

“Over the next few months, we’ll be making improvements to the experience with a new feature called ‘About this ad’, which will also show users the verified name of the advertiser behind each ad. About this ad will initially be available for display ads purchased through Google Ads and Display & Video 360, and we’ll bring it to other ad surfaces throughout 2021,” as per a Google Blog post.

In order to provide people with detailed information about all the ads they see on the web, we’re releasing a new tool called Ads Transparency Spotlight, now available to try out as an alpha extension from the Chrome Web Store.

Furthermore, Google stated that Chrome continues to explore more privacy-forward ways for the web browser to support digital ads with the Privacy Sandbox open standards initiative. As part of the Privacy Sandbox, several proposals have been published for new APIs that would solve for use cases like ad selection, conversion measurement, and fraud protection in a way that doesn’t reveal identifying information about individual users. One of the proposed APIs, for trust tokens that could combat ad fraud by distinguishing between bots and real users, is now available for testing by developers, and more will move to live testing soon.

Once these approaches have addressed the needs of users, publishers and advertisers, Chrome plans to phase out support for third-party cookies. These proposals are being actively discussed in forums like the W3C. Google’s ads team is actively contributing to this dialog—as it encourage any interested party to do—and it expect to incorporate the new solutions into the products by this tech giant in the years ahead.

The future state of digital advertising promises new technologies, new standards, and better, more sustainable approaches, but it will take some time to get there. Google recognizes the unease that many in the industry feel during this period of transition. While there is certainly more change on the horizon, it’s critical that marketers and publishers do not wait to take action.

Google will continue its work to move the digital ads industry towards a more privacy-forward future.

Now, artists will have the opportunity to connect with fans around their official music videos on Facebook, too,” as per a blog post.

In order to stay up to date and see their latest music videos and posts in the users’ News Feed, the users can also follow their favourite artists. The users can follow an artist directly from a music video, and click through from a video to their Page to learn more about them and find information like when they’re performing next and where to buy their music.

“We’ll continue working with our music partners to build unique social experiences and bring music into the ways people connect and share. In the coming weeks, we’ll add more of your favourite music videos to Facebook. Google One app now offers some features for free to Android and iOS users

In 2019, Google had launched automatic phone backup for members on Android devices. So no matter what happens to the smartphone, the users won’t lose the important stuff like texts, contacts and apps, and photos and videos. Now, Google One’s phone backup as well as a new storage manager tool are available for free for Android and iOS users. Mind you! The users can back up the devices and clean up their files across Google Photos, Google Drive and Gmail.

“Automatic phone backup will be available on Android phones, even if you don’t have a Google One membership. And if you have an Apple iPhone, we’re introducing a new iOS app that lets you store photos, videos, contacts, and calendar events with Google. Start backing up your phone with the Google One app, and save the stuff you care about using the free 15 GB of storage that comes with your Google Account. If you break, lose, or upgrade your phone, you can rest easy knowing that your data is safe in the cloud,” Larissa Fontaine, Director, Google One, told in a blog post.

In order to easily manage and clean up the files across Drive, Gmail, and Photos, Google is also adding a new storage manager in the Google One app and on the web, which gives the user an easy way to see how they are using the storage and free up space. Moreover, they can keep the files they want, get rid of the ones that is no longer in need and make room for more.

The tech giant further revealed that if a user requires more storage and want the full Google One experience, they can always upgrade to a membership right from the app. With plans of all sizes, the users can get the additional storage they need at a price that works for you, starting at $1.99/month. Being a member, one can share their plan with up to five additional family members, access live help with anything Google and get benefits including premium support and family sharing.

Google further added that these updates to the app only applies to consumer accounts and will not be available for G Suite business customers. All that’s need to be done to access the updates is simply download Android or iOS version of the app.

Sony introduces PlayStation 5-ready TVs for smooth gaming experience

Ahead of the next-generation game console releasing this holiday season, Sony has announced that its TVs are officially ‘Ready for PlayStation 5’. Mind you! NASA’s Mars 2020 mission all set to carry first-ever helicopter for another planet

In order to protect NASA’s newest Mars rover Perseverance and deploy the first-ever Mars helicopter, Lockheed Martin has developed the technology behind the aeroshell. The Mars 2020 spacecraft with its Perseverance rover is scheduled to launch at 7:50 am EDT on July 30 (which translates to 5:20 pm IST) from Space Launch Complex-41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station on a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

Emphasising that this mission is pivotal to the future of Mars exploration, Lisa Callahan, vice president and general manager of Commercial Civil Space at Lockheed Martin Space, said, “Our partnership with NASA to build the aeroshell and engineer the Mars helicopter delivery system allowed us to draw upon our deep expertise in aeroshells while also inventing new systems to enable the first flight in the atmosphere of Mars. This all moves us closer to the day humankind will walk on the Red Planet.”

Lockheed Martin was tasked by JPL to build the Mars helicopter delivery system (MHDS) that will deploy the helicopter to the Martian surface for its flight. The delivery system was designed by Lockheed Martin collaboratively with JPL and attaches the Ingenuity helicopter to the belly of the rover. The lightweight system was designed to reliably deploy the 4-pound helicopter to the surface using four pyrotechnic separation events. It also protects Ingenuity from debris during landing with a durable, yet light, composite debris shield.

Built by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), the Perseverance rover will study the geology of Mars while searching for signs of past microbial life, collects samples of rock and will even set the stage for human exploration to the planet. The 2,260-pound rover is enclosed in an aeroshell capsule that protects the rover during its seven-month deep space flight and atmospheric descent toward the Martian surface. Lockheed Martin built this large aeroshell and every previous NASA aeroshell sent to the Red Planet.

The Mars 2020 aeroshell, along with the one built for the Mars Science Laboratory mission, is the largest built for a robotic mission. Composed of a heat shield and cone-shaped back shell measuring 15 feet in diameter, the aeroshell is constructed in a composite aluminium honeycomb structure sandwiched by graphite-epoxy face sheets. The heat shield is covered with tiles of a protective material called phenolic impregnated carbon ablator (PICA) that can withstand the more than 2,370 degrees Fahrenheit seen during peak heating.

Nasa‘s Perseverance rover is expected to land on Mars on February 18, 2021.

SpaceX Crew-2 mission: NASA announces astronauts to fly to International Space Station

NASA and its international partners have assigned crew members for Crew-2, which will be the second operational SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the International Space Station as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. While NASA astronauts Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur will serve as spacecraft commander and pilot, respectively, for the mission, JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Akihiko Hoshide and ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Thomas Pesquet will join as mission specialists.

Targeted to launch in spring 2021, the Crew-2 astronauts will remain aboard the space station for approximately six months as expedition crew members along with three crewmates. These astronaut will launch via a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The increase of the full space station crew complement to seven members – over the previous six – will allow NASA to effectively double the amount of science that can be conducted in space.

According to NASA, “This will be Kimbrough’s third trip to space and his second long-duration stay at the space station. Born in Killeen, Texas, and raised in Atlanta, Kimbrough was selected as an astronaut in 2004. He first launched aboard space shuttle Endeavour for a visit to the station on the STS-126 mission in 2008, then aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft for Expedition 49/50 in 2016. He has spent a total of 189 days in space, and performed six spacewalks. Kimbrough also is a retired U.S. Army colonel and earned a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, and a master’s degree in operations research from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.”

On the contrary, McArthur will be making her second trip to space, but her first to the station. After being selected as an astronaut in 2000, she launched on space shuttle Atlantis as a mission specialist on STS-125, the final Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission, in 2009. McArthur operated the shuttle’s robotic arm over the course of the 12 days and 21 hours she spent in space, capturing the telescope and moving crew members during the five spacewalks needed to repair and upgrade it.

As far as Hoshide is concerned, this will be his third spaceflight. He was part of the STS-124 mission aboard space shuttle Discovery in 2008 and a crew member for Expeditions 32 and 33, launching aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft in 2012 for a 124-day visit to the station. On the other hand, Pesquet previously flew as part of Expeditions 50 and 51, launching aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft and spending 196 days in space.

NASA’s Commercial Crew Program is working with the American aerospace industry as companies develop and operate a new generation of spacecraft and launch systems capable of carrying crews to low-Earth orbit and the space station. Commercial transportation to and from the station will provide expanded utility, additional research time, and broader opportunities for discovery on the orbital outpost.

The International Space Station is a critical testbed for NASA to understand and overcome the challenges of long-duration spaceflight. As commercial companies focus on providing human transportation services to and from low-Earth orbit, NASA is free to focus on building spacecraft and rockets for deep space missions to the Moon and Mars.

Hisense announces launch of its range of QLED, UHD & Smart TVs in India

BlackBerry to provide autonomy systems in Canoo’s upcoming electric vehicles

As the global autonomous vehicle market is expected to reach nearly $600 billion by 2026, BlackBerry Limited and electric vehicle (EV) startup Canoo has announced that the ADAS systems for the company’s membership-based semi-autonomous EVs will be powered by the BlackBerry QNX operating system (OS), including radar sensors, parking sensors and cameras.

As part of the agreement, BlackBerry will license its BlackBerry QNX technology to Canoo, including its QNX OS for Safety 2.0 to serve as the safe and secure foundation for the autonomous features within the company’s sleek and city-friendly EVs. Canoo aims to bring its first production vehicles to market with advanced level 2 (or level 2+) autonomous features as standard at the end of 2021. Level 2 features are consistent with partial autonomy, enabling the vehicle to manage acceleration and steering and monitor components of its environment in certain conditions.

“Canoo is pushing the boundaries of AV development, challenging the traditional way of building, offering and using vehicles and we look forward to working with them to achieve their vision of a world in which transportation is affordable, electric, shared and autonomous,” said John Wall, SVP and Co-Head, BlackBerry Technology Solutions.

“As these systems become more affordable and available to implement in the mass market, our membership model makes it easy to keep our vehicles up-to-date with the latest in ADAS technology. BlackBerry QNX is the industry standard for safety certified software operating systems, so it was a natural choice for us,” said Phil Weicker, In Charge of Propulsion & Electronics at Canoo.

According to BlackBerry, “QNX OS for Safety is an operating system that embedded developers can use to build safety-critical systems.”

On the basis of BlackBerry’s advanced and secure QNX Neutrino real-time operating system (RTOS), the QNX OS for Safety has been certified to ISO 26262 ASIL D and IEC 61508 SIL3. With a pre-certified microkernel RTOS, the solution enables automakers and embedded software developers in a wide variety of industries to accelerate their development timelines and reduce the cost in moving projects from research to production.

Outside of automotive, BlackBerry QNX OS is widely used in life and safety-critical systems for medical devices, industrial controls, rail, robotics and aerospace & defense. BlackBerry’s pedigree in safety, security, and continued innovation has led to its QNX technology being embedded in more than 175 million vehicles on the road currently.
