The Coronavirus cases seem to be on the rise in every region of the world. Also, this pandemic has severely affected the electronics industry especially smartphones and as well as computing devices. As we all know the major smartphone companies are located in China from where this deadly disease has originated. During this period factories have been shut down that have affected the manufacturing of the devices.
The International Data Corporation (IDC) has forecasted that in 2020 there will be a decline of 2.3% in the global smartphone market. In the first half of 2020, smartphone sales are expected to fall 10.6% year-on-year. The huge shortage of components, factory shutdowns, quarantine mandates, logistics, and travel restrictions is going to be the biggest reason that will create difficulty for smartphone companies to manufacture the mobile handsets as well as its shipment.
The global smartphone market recovery will be impacted in 2020 as uncertainties around COVID-19 increased over the last month.” The report further explained, “The worldwide smartphone market is expected to decline 2.3% in 2020 with shipment volume just over 1.3 billion. The COVID-19 outbreak is expected to stress the short-term scenario with shipments declining 10.6% year over year in the first half of 2020. Global smartphone shipments are expected to return to growth in 2021 driven by accelerated 5G efforts.”
The present scenario has given the largest smartphone market in China the biggest hit. The situation is going to start getting better from the third quarter of the year when the COVID-19 situation that is also referred to as coronavirus improves and the 5G plans pick up the pace globally.
February and March is usually the time when most of the smartphone companies introduce their flagship products. According to Will Wong, research manager with IDC’s Asia/Pacific Client Devices Group, “For the epicenter, China, we forecast the domestic market to drop by nearly 40% year over year for the first quarter and even with a potential March recovery it will still be difficult to reach last year’s levels.” Furthermore, he says, “Buyers will purchase from online channels, which will account for a significantly increased share of phones sold in the first half of 2020 and may represent a permanent shift in buying behaviors.”
This means the pandemic is likely to cripple the Chinese economy. Unfortunately, this will put the burden on the SMEs and we are going to see an increase in the pricing of devices.
As more and more employees are shifting to work from home in the light of health concerns due to the coronavirus outbreak. The major telecom companies in India are either offering free internet access at home or revising their regular plans with more data as well as non-Jio FUP minutes. To connect and lure more customers now Jio has updated its 4G data vouchers that will now offer double high-speed data. The upgrade vouchers earlier did not offer FUP minutes but now all the users will get FUP non-Jio FUP minutes excluding Rs 251 data voucher.
India telecom service provider Reliance Jio has now upgraded its old recharge pack such as 4G data vouchers. The revived plan will now come with double high-speed data access along with non-Jio voice calling minutes. In addition to this, the company has also revised its old recharge packs except Rs 251 which offers 2GB high-speed daily data valid for 51 days.
The telecom operator has also listed the revised prepaid 4G data vouchers on its website. As per the listing, Jio’s Rs 11 voucher will now offer 800 MB of data and 75 non-Jio FUP minutes. Earlier the recharge voucher provided 400MB of data access along with 75 minutes of non-Jio voice calls.
In a similar way, Jio’s Rs 21 voucher will now provide 2 GB data and 200 non-Jio FUP minutes. Prior to the upgrade, the same voucher offered 1GB of high-speed data. Whereas Rs 51 voucher now offers 6 GB data which has been upgraded from 3GB data access along with 500 minutes of non-Jio voice calling.
Similarly, Jio’s Rs 101 will be offering 12 GB data and 1000 non-Jio FUP minutes in this voucher.
However, any changes to Rs 251 4G data voucher remain the same. It is still offering 2GB high-speed data for 51 days but it does not include non-Jio FUP minutes.
The increasing coronavirus cases in India have now forced all the people to work from home. This scenario has automatically increased the demand for internet access as well as broadband connections in the country. The impact has also shown an increased burden on the telecom operators such as BSNL, Reliance Jio, Airtel as well as other operators also.
Government-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has now launched a “Work@Home” broadband plan for its users. The promotional plan will be offering free Internet access to its existing landline customers to support as well as encourage people to work from home. The new plan will be offering 10Mbps download speeds with a cap of 5GB per day. This plan is applicable to all the BSNL landline subscribers across the country including Andaman and Nicobar circle. In addition to this, the plan is also going to provide email ID access with 1GB storage space free of cost. However, the plan is available for the existing landline users but new customers can also get access to this service by activating any landline plan.
On exceeding the limit the users will be able to access the internet at 1Mbps speed. Additionally, the plan has no download as well as upload limits like we mentioned earlier there is no extra cost so you don’t need to pay any monthly charges nor any security deposit. There are also no installation charges. The BSNL Work@Home plan is only valid for one month from the date of activation. Those willing to activate the new plan can dial toll-free number 1800-345-1504.
According to a report currently, there is about 19 million fixed broadband that includes enterprise and office connections. Moreover, around 17 million users have home broadband connections. The ongoing coronavirus crisis has now turned the employees to work from home which means all the fixed broadband networks load has been relocated to home broadband networks while impacting the network traffic.
The coronavirus impact has also increased the demand for new fixed as well as high-speed broadband connections at home. This has increased the pressure on internet service providers to deal with additional data traffic.

The device is the successor of Honor 8X that was launched last year in India. The company has launched the phone at an affordable price of Rs 13,999 for the 4GB RAM and 128GB storage. For the review, we received the 6GB variant. In this price segment, the device is expected to give tough competition to Realme and Xiaomi smartphones. However, the X series is the most successful under the budget smartphone that offers attractive design along with decent specifications. To recall, the smartphone was launched in China in mid of 2019 however it arrived in India this January. To know more about the device read our review of Honor 9X.

Design
Starting with the design, the Honor 9X comes with a notch-less large display. The biggest problem of the bigger display is that sometimes your one hand cannot reach the top and the edges of the screen and ultimately you will need to use your other hand to handle the phone. Also, the phone is a bit heavier, even when it is all plastic built. It comes with a big 6.59-inch LCD FullView display with 1,080×2,340 pixels resolution and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The benefit of a big screen is that you can enjoy streaming videos and movies on it, plus if there is no notch to house a selfie camera the overall viewing experience becomes distraction-free. The smartphone comes with Widevine L1 support enhancing streaming videos with an HD resolution on compatible apps such as Netflix, Amazon prime among others.
The rear body comes with a 3D curved panel with a glossy finish, which is offered in two colour options Midnight Black and Sapphire Blue. The phone attracts more dust also the fingerprints are much visible on the Midnight Black variant which we got for the review. The pill-shaped rear camera is located on the upper left corner of the rear panel. The camera set up consists of three camera sensors that have been placed vertically inside it whereas the flash has been placed just below the setup. Honor 9X features a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor that is quick at unlocking the phone. The company has not provided the face unlock feature on the phone because it houses a motorised selfie camera. So this method will take time to unlock the phone as it has to rise up every time the user asks for face recognition. Like we mentioned earlier this phone is Honor’s first pop-up selfie camera phone, which sits just beside the SIM card tray. On the right side, there is a volume rocker and a power button. At the bottom, you can find a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C port for charging and a speaker grille.
Coming to the display Honor 9X features a 6.59-inch IPS LCD FullView display which is just perfect in this price point. During our review, the display had an accurate colour as well as brightness and contrast. The smart resolution feature on it lowers the screen resolution to save power when necessary. When used outdoors the visibility of the display was not great under direct sunlight, so this is something Honor needs to work upon in future phones.
Performance And Camera
The Honor 9X is powered by Huawei Kirin 710F processor, which is also provided on its predecessor Honor 8X. This really failed to impress us because it rivals Xiaomi and Realme already offers their devices with the latest processor at very decent pricing. Moving ahead the processor is paired with up to 6GB of RAM and 128Gb of storage. However, it lacked an upper mid-range processor, the overall experience was fair enough as it did not suffer any lag or slowdowns while loading apps such as Facebook, Instagram, etc. But it could not handle heavy games such as PUBG on higher settings despite having GPU Turbo 3.0 that usually delivers good results. So, in this case, we would suggest you to play the game on the lower graphics settings. We would need to point out here, other smartphones such as Redmi note 8 at this price range deliver better performance.
The provided software is not the latest but good for the money. The smartphone runs on EMUI 9.1 based on the top of Android 9. Here you get full gesture navigation support, however by default it comes with the standard three buttons on it. Navigation on such a large smartphone will cause a bit of difficulty to bring down the notification panel for people who have small hands. But here is a trick, you can enable it from the fingerprint ID section that will allow you to use the fingerprint scanner to show the notification panel, on a double tap you can clear all the notifications and slide up to close the notification shade, which is impressive.
Else it comes with a 4,000mAh battery for longer battery life. We used the mobile phone for a few days regularly, spent a couple of hours watching videos, checking our social media accounts such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, listening to music and checking emails and it lasted a day. On discontinuous usage, the battery survived more than a day. We really don’t need to worry about putting it on charge or saving the battery to get through the day. It has a better battery life than most in the category, which we have reviewed in the recent past. It never made us feel like, plug in the charger or the phone will die during the day.
The overall performance of the phone is fairly good. However, the cameras left us with a mixed bag of feelings. The Honor 9X comes with a triple rear camera set up that includes a 48-megapixel primary sensor, a 2-megapixel depth sensor and an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens. The phone clicks pictures with the 12-megapixel sensor on the main camera by default. Here, the white balance and the colours were accurate. You can opt for a full-resolution 48-megapixel image within the settings. Yes, you can shoot in 48 megapixels, but to get to it is a task.
12 megapixel48 megapixel
The shots taken under low lighting conditions were good and detailed. But we discovered that the 48-megapixels deliver good images only when there is good lighting otherwise the pictures were a bit noisy. The shots taken in portrait mode were really disappointing. The camera lens just could not detect the edges and the outcome was not satisfactory. You do get a dedicated aperture mode so that you can adjust the blur effect manually. Over that, there are other camera modes on the phone such as slo-mo, moving picture, light painting and stickers.
With night mode/ Without night mode
We were surprised by the results of the night mode. The images taken under dark conditions delivered good details as well as colours. The main camera was also capable of capturing low light pictures, but we would recommend you take images with the dedicated night mode that delivers good pictures with low noise and perfect colours.
The performance of the selfie camera is also average. The Honor 9X comes with a 16-megapixel pop-up selfie camera, which is a bit slow. We clicked the selfie shots while keeping the AI beautification mode disable because the resultant images with it softened the edges too much. We noticed the same problem when selfie pictures were clicked in the portrait mode. Firstly it over smoothened the skin texture and then again the edge detection was not accurate, it blurred many strands of our hairs and we would definitely not recommend you to use this feature for taking selfies. Other than that, the device is capable of recording 1080p at 60fps and wide-angle video at 30fps.
Verdict
Honor 9X is a good mid-range smartphone being offered by Huawei at the price point. You get a notch-less screen, a semi-decent camera set up and excellent battery life. A good phone for day to day tasks, however, a powerful processor could have uplifted the performance of the camera because in 2020 it would not be easy for it to compete with other brands at this price range. In the same price segment, Redmi 8 Pro comes with a powerful chipset whereas Samsung M31 is giving a super large battery. So you can pick from these in the range.
Just like WhatsApp now Instagram is also working on the disappearing messages feature on its platform. For quite a long time this feature is under testing on the messaging app. Now some emerging reports suggest that the Photo-sharing app Instagram is also following the footprints of the messaging app. This ephemeral messaging has been inspired by Snapchat’s popular feature in which pictures disappear after a specific time.
The ephemeral messaging feature was first spotted by reverse engineering specialist Jane Manchun Wong inside Instagrams’s Android app code labelled “speak no evil” emoji. Wong took to Twitter to reveal how the feature works. According to him the self-destructing messages or disappearing messages work for the users who have enabled dark mode via Instagram Direct message. The message sent automatically gets vanished when the chat window is closed.
Instagram is working on “🙊 mode” where messages disappear
It seems to be in an early barebone version but I tried my best to demonstrate how it might work pic.twitter.com/ZrUZZj0TWo
In addition to this Instagram confirmed that it is working on this feature. A spokesperson in its statement said, “We’re always exploring new features to improve your messaging experience. This feature is still in early development and not testing externally just yet.”
Other social media apps such as Twitter as well as WhatsApp are testing the disappearing messages feature. Twitter recently confirmed that its feature will be called “Fleets” In which text messages, photos as well as videos will automatically disappear in 24 hours.
Furthermore, WhatsApp was also spotted testing this feature in two Android beta versions – 2.20.83 as well as 2.20.84. The users will be allowed to set a specific time for self-destructing messaging in their private chats. The messages will be short-lived for a period of one hour, one day, one week, one month or one year which can be set as per preference. When the user enables the feature, a clock icon will appear in the bubble. This was spotted by WABetainfo and it mentioned that the feature is currently disabled by default which is not accessible right now. This indicates that soon the Facebook-owned chatting app might roll out the stable version.

On taking a close look at the leaked image which is circulating online, it seems that Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) is likely to be equipped with two speakers at the bottom of the tablet and one on the top panel. In addition to this, there could be a Type-C charging port at the bottom, a 3.5mm headphone jack on the top, and a SIM/MicroSD card tray on the left side of the device. And the Power/ Lock as well as volume button could be placed on the right panel.
However, the leaked image of Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) reveals no information regarding the fingerprint recognition module.
On the camera front, Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.4 (2020) carries an 8MP rear-facing camera and a 5MP selfie snapper. According to news report it is likely that this upcoming tablet from Samsung could derive its power from Exynos 7904 SoC paired with 3GB RAM.

According to the company, Samsung’s new eUFS 3.1 breaks the 1GB/s performance threshold in smartphone storage by delivering three times the write speed of the previous 512GB eUFS 3.0 mobile memory.
“With our introduction of the fastest mobile storage, smartphone users will no longer have to worry about the bottleneck they face with conventional storage cards,” said Cheol Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales & Marketing at Samsung Electronics.
This latest development means consumers can enjoy the speed of an ultra-slim notebook when storing massive files like 8K videos or several hundred large-size photos in their smartphones, without any buffering. Moreover, transferring contents from an old phone to a new device will also require considerably less time.
Talking about the performance, the 512GB eUFS 3.1 processes up to 60 percent faster than the popularly used UFS 3.0 version, offering 100,000 input/output operations per second (IOPS) for reads and 70,000 IOPS for write speed. The tablet’s official launch date is still unclear, however sources close to Gadget Bridge do tell us it can happen in April of 2020.
