9 signs that your smartphone may be tapped

Have you ever worried that your personal and business communication is not private? Do you have a consistent feeling that your smartphone has been tapped by someone? The sad truth is that not all systems are as secure as they seem and your device immediately becomes more vulnerable to being tapped the moment you root it or jail-break it, to download third party apps that are not available on the official app store. There are a few signs to look out for to know if you actually have a reason to worry:

You hear unusual background sounds on your phone

Smartphone 1 Watch out for any kind of a background noise when you are on talking to someone on your phone. If you hear strange background noises or pulsating static, high-pitched humming it may be a sign of your smartphone being tapped. However, strange noises can also happen because of other reasons, so it’s not a sure-shot indicator that your phone is indeed tapped. But then, if your phone makes strange sounds even when it is not being used, it is a stronger sign that it has been tapped. You can also use a sound-bandwidth sensor on a low frequency to check for any inaudible sounds. If it detects sounds several times in one minute, it is a sign that your smartphone may be tapped.

Your smartphone’s battery suddenly doesn’t last long

Smartphone battery If your usage of your device is unchanged and still your smartphone’s battery keeps running out sooner than it earlier did, it may be because it is tapped. And by sooner, we mean your phone consistently being low on charge in spite of being charged again and again. But before you jump to any conclusions, check on your device what is it that is using up the battery. Whether you own an iPhone or an Android smartphone, you can see which apps are consuming the most battery in the Settings section. If you find nothing unusual there and your usage seems to be the same as before, you should dig in further to find out if your phone is tapped.

Your smartphone’s battery gets warmed up too quickly

Smartphone 2 Another stronger sign is your phone’s battery getting warmed up even when your device is not in use. This is because this points towards the presence of an uninvited software on your smartphone. And there are softwares available that let someone else listen to your conversations. Although high temperature of the smartphone clubbed with low power if often a sign to look out for, but check for other reasons for this happening before you panic over it.

You have difficulty shutting down your smartphone

Smartphone off If you feel that your smartphone has suddenly become unresponsive or you face difficulty shutting it down, it can point towards someone else having unauthorized access to it. The matter need immediate attention if you try to shut your phone down, but it fails to happen or a back-light stays on even after shutdown process has been completed. However, if you have recently installed an update in your phone, then that may be the reason behind it.

Look out for suspicious SMS messages on your smartphone

Smartphone text Sometimes, we ignore some activity on our phone that may actually be a sign of it being hacked. For instance, an app beginning to install on your phone on its own after your reboot it, weird SMS text messages from unknown senders and strange pop-up advertisements. In fact, weird text messages from unknown senders is a strong sign to watch out for as there are tapping apps which receive commands via coded SMS messages. If your family and friends also say that they have received weird messages from your phone, it means that your smartphone is infected and is trying to spread malware to other phones too.

Check for electronic interference when your phone is off

Smartphone laptop Electronic interference is hardly anything new. But it should only happen if you are on a phone call. If you are not using your phone and it still happens, then that is not normal. You can easily check this by placing your phone close to another electronic device like your laptop or television. If you hear any unusual sound, it can be a sign that someone is listening to your calls.

Your phone bill increases because of data usage…except you didn’t use any

money Did your phone bill go up dramatically? And is data responsible for it although your usage remains unchanged? A reason behind this can be presence of spyware or other malicious apps on your phone. These apps secretly use up a lot of data, so there is a high chance you will see a dramatic jump in your mobile bill. However, do check for other reasons before you conclude. You don’t want to panic only because your child inadvertently activated the hotspot on your device.

You have apps on your phone that you didn’t install

App icons Do look out for the apps you have on your device. We often download apps to try and at times, forget all about them. This leads to the presence of so many apps on our device, that there can be a possibility of missing out any apps that we didn’t install. Check your phone for any such apps because there is a high possibility that they would be malicious. Hummer was an app like this and infected almost 1.4 million Android devices per day in early 2016. Its presence was most prevalent in India, Russia and the Philippines.

You inadvertently downloaded a fraudulent app

Social media apps If you downloaded an app which was malicious in nature, it can lead to your device being affected by Trojans. These malwares can also get root access of the device, make you download fake system updates and gain complete domination over your activities. The only way to be safe is to only download renowned apps and stay away from fake versions of popular apps like YouTube and WhatsApp.

Apple hires Nokia’s Ashish Chowdhary as new India head

Cupertino based technology giant Apple has done an important hiring in India today. The company has hired Ashish Chowdhary, who previously served as Chief Customer Operations Officer for Nokia as its new Country Manager for India. He will take over the operations starting January 2019. Prior to Chowdhary, Michel Coulomb served as the head of Indian operations for Apple. He had taken the post in December 2017 and before him, Sanjay Kaul held the same position. Chowdhary had started working at Nokia in December 2013 and went on to become a part of company’s executive board of Nokia Networks and Nokia Siemens Networks in the year 2009. Besides this, he also served as the Head of Global Services at Nokia Siemens Networks. He was also the Vice President for Enterprise Business at Hughes Communications Ltd. As Apple’s India head Chowdhary has a very challenging task that he needs to do. He would be expected to revive the technology giant’s growth in India, which has proven itself to be a very important market for the technology giant. And this year, Apple has lost a significant market share to newer players like OnePlus. In fact, Apple’s market share has been reduced to 1% in the country. The poor performance of the company has also been acknowledged by CEO Tim Cook. After the company’s Q4 earnings report was published, CEO Cook confirmed that Apple had a ‘flat’ business in the country. He also went on to say that Apple was forced to increase the prices of its devices in the country after the value of Rupee fell against that of US Dollar. It is worth noticing that Rupee’s value has fallen by around 15% against dollar in the last few months and other companies are also expected to increase the prices of their devices amid this. However, Tim Cook did not seem deterred by these results and only described Apple’s fall in India as ‘speed bumps’ in a long journey. He was quoted saying, “I am a big believer in India. I am very bullish on the country and the people and our ability to do well there.”

Always glued to social media apps? They may be affecting your mental well-being

Most of us can’t think of going a day without social media. The new way of keeping in touch with friends is by sharing updates on Facebook, posting Stories on Snapchat and Instagram and speaking about your views on Twitter. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that some of us are even addicted to it. And, according to a new study that has been conducted by the Psychology Department at Penn State University has shown an interesting revelation about social media and our mental and emotional well-being. The study says that there is a direct link between an increase in social media use and the user’s emotional state. The study was conducted on 143 students and it went on for a period of three weeks. During this time, these students were assigned how much time they could spend on social media apps including Facebook, Snapchat and Instagram. To be precise, each student was asked to limit his social media usage to 10 minutes per app every day. So in total, they were allowed 30 minutes of social media use per day. But, they had a choice of limiting their usage or to continue using the apps as they generally did. In order to document the change, all the participants were asked to take a baseline test before the experiment began and this was followed by a weekly assessment on standard tests for social support, depression and more. The report goes on to say that the test group “showed significant reductions” in the feeling of depression and loneliness compared to the group that used social media like they did regularly. Furthermore, there was also a reduction in ‘fear of missing out’ and anxiety in the groups that limited their usage as compare to others. For those unaware, fear of missing out or FOMO, as its popularly called is a prevalent feeling of apprehension that other people maybe having rewarding experiences from which one is absent. However, according to researchers behind the study, this cannot be considered as complete and other researchers can take the study forward to get results that are more comprehensive. According to an initial report by TechCrunch, the study has been published in the latest Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology.

OnePlus 7 would not be the company’s first 5G smartphone: Report

Last month, OnePlus announced that it will be launching a smartphone that will have 5G connectivity. Other than that, there has been no word from the company regarding its upcoming 5G device. But recently, a spokesperson from OnePlus said to CNET that OnePlus 7, which will be the successor to the company’s current flagship, will not come with 5G connectivity. But then, the company does have plans to kick off a lineup of devices which would include the company’s first 5G smartphone. OnePlus’s smartphone with 5G connectivity is expected to be launched in early 2019 and there is a possibility that the company would unveil it during the Mobile World Congress that is scheduled for February next year and will be held in Barcelona, Spain. However, right now this is just a speculation and there is no official word on it. It has been suggested that the upcoming device by OnePlus that has 5G connectivity will be more expensive than the current lineup, but the company doesn’t instead to let go off its ‘affordable flagship’ mantra. So, according to reports, OnePlus is planning a separate lineup for its 5G device. If this is true, then we would expect to see some features that OnePlus has been avoiding for long in its new device. For instance, wireless charging. OnePlus recently launched its 6T smartphone that is available at a starting price of Rs 37,999. The smartphone features a 6.41-inch Optic AMOLED Full HD+ display and sports an in-display fingerprint sensor and a waterdrop-shaped notch on the top. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor and is clubbed with either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. OnePlus 6T has a dual rear camera setup with 16MP and 20MP sensors and there is also a selfie camera with a 16MP sensor. Although the sensors of the smartphone are the same as OnePlus 6, there are new modes like Night Scape and Studio Lighting. The device runs Android 9 Pie skinned with OxygenOS 9.0 and houses a 3,700mAh battery. Recently, OnePlus also launched a Thunder Purple coloured variant of OnePlus 6T that is only available with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. The new colour variant of the device is set to launch in India on November 16.

Other products from Apple don’t directly compete with Amazon offer, but HomePod competes directly with Amazon Echo. When asked about excluding HomePod, Amazon’s spokesperson said, “We make assortment decisions all the time, based on terms and a large number of other factors.” As per independent sellers who sell Apple products on Amazon will have to remove the listing after January 4, 2019. After unveiling its foldable phone last week at Samsung Developer Conference, the South Korean technology giant has today launched a new clamshell phone, called W2019. The phone comes with two displays and a physical keypad is also present on it. As of now, the price of the newly launched Samsung W2019 phone has not been confirmed by the company, but it is expected to be over 10,000 yuan. Apple announces free repairs for these ‘defective’ iPhones and MacBook Pros

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple has admitted that iPhone X’s display. Apple’s tenth anniversary edition that garnered a lot of sales for the company last year is said to have “touch issues” in its display. The issue in iPhone X was first reported by Bloomberg and was later confirmed by the company itself. Apple now has a support page for the issue and it says that iPhone X’s display encountered the touch issues “due to a component that might fail on the display module.” However, as of now there is no word on how may devices are affected by the issue. According to what Apple has said on its support page, if the display of your iPhone X or a part of it does not respond to intermittently to touch, it means you own one among the faulty units of the device. In other cases, the display of iPhone X may react without the user even touching the device. This also happens because of the touch component on the display. If you are facing either of the two issues, you can head to an Apple Authorized Service Provider and get their iPhone X’s screen replaced for free. It is worth noticing that no other iPhones are eligible for the program and if you indeed are planning to get your iPhone X’s display under the program, it will be examined to verify the issue first. Also, before heading out to get the screen replaced, backup your smartphone‘s data on iCloud or iTunes. Another thing that you should know is that the program has no effect on the standard warranty coverage of iPhone X. Also, if your iPhone X has any damage which impairs the ability of complete repair, Apple service centre will fix that before replacing your screen. But anything additional that the company does to fix repairs would not be free. Apple’s repair program covers affected iPhone X devices after the first retail sale of the smartphone. Other than iPhones, MacBook Pro 13-inch (non-Touch bar) are also facing an issue. A number of models with 128GB and 256GB SSD are facing an issue that results in failure of the drive and results in data losses. According to Apple, the affected units were sold between June 2017 and June 2018. The technology giant will be servicing these SSDs for free and it has sent an email to its customers to make them aware about the program. MacBook owners can enter the serial number of their device on Apple’s support page and find out if they qualify for the program.

Samsung foldable phone: 10 things you should know

Last week saw Samsung unveiling its foldable phone at its developer conference. We did get a first look at the much talked about device and now we know for sure that it’s real, but then, the technology giant has revealed very limited information about it. We would have to wait for future updates from the company to know more, but as of now, we have pulled together all the information we could to list down everything that you should know about Samsung’s foldable phone. Check out our list now:

What is a foldable phone?

Samsung foldable phone 1 According to Samsung, it’s foldable phone is a device that looks like a tablet when fully opened and acts like a phone when folded inwards from the centre. The newly unveiled device by Samsung comes with a cellular connection. It is worth noticing that Royole’s FlexPai, which is also a foldable device, has an outward folding display, unlike Samsung’s which folds inwards.

The name of the device

Samsung foldable phone 2 As of now, there is no official word about Samsung’s foldable phone’s name. However, reports online point towards two names – Samsung Galaxy F and Samsung Galaxy X. But then, we cannot confirm anything till the company makes the device’s name official.

The display

samsung foldable phone - foldable adhesive   There are two displays on Samsung’s foldable phone. The cover display is 4.58 inches in size and has an aspect ratio of 21:9. The screen has an 840×1960 resolution and comes with a density of 420 dpi. It can be used when the device is folded into a candybar phone. The main display of the device is 7.3 inches and comes with an aspect ratio of 4.2:3. It has a pixel resolution of 1536×2152 and comes with a display density of 420 dpi. But those are just the specifications. Samsung has actually created a new display for its device and is called it the Infinity Flex Display. Any smartphone’s display is made up of several layers. However, they usually cannot move. In its Infinity Flex Display, Samsung has used a new adhesive in order to coat the layers of the screen in a way that they can fold a “hundreds of thousands of times.”

The battery life

Samsung foldable phone 4 According to Samsung’s Jisun Park, the company intends to give its foldable device a battery that lasts longer than its current Galaxy smartphones. And Samsung wants to achieve this in spite of accommodating a bigger and more active screen that is bound to drain more battery.

The operating system

Samsung foldable phone 6 The foldable phone wasn’t the only new thing that Samsung spoke about last week. The South Korean technology giant also unveiled the redesigned version of its custom software. Called One UI, the operating system is based on Android and will be used on the foldable phone as well as all other future Samsung smartphones. The One UI beta will be made available by the company this month, but only for Android Pie users.

The apps

Samsung foldable phone 7 Samsung was very careful at its developer conference to not speak too much about the device. So as of now, we know very little about the apps that we would be able to use on Samsung’s foldable phone. It would be safe to assume that Google’s suite of apps would be present along with some apps made by Samsung like SmartThings. Besides these, we know that Flipboard will be present on the device. While currently there is no word on what other apps will be available on Samsung’s foldable phone, we can expect some popular ones to be there are the device’s key feature is its ability to multitask. In the tablet mode, users can run up to three apps at once, according to Samsung.

What happens to an app that is running on the device when you fold it?

Samsung foldable phone 8 The device will automatically transfer the app or the screen the user is looking at to the other display. So if you are using an app in tablet mode and you close the phone, the same screen will start reflecting on the device’s second display.

The advantage

Samsung foldable phone 3 The main advantage of a Samsung’s foldable phone is that you get a lot of extra screen space. And let’s face it: A 7.3-inch display does offer a lot more space than what we get otherwise from smartphones. And another key advantage is the multitasking that the company promises. The foldable phone by Samsung is said to have the ability to run three apps at once or let users access more features of a particular app at once. We consider both of these as important benefits that the users can get from the phone.

When will Samsung’s foldable phone will finally be launched?

Samsung foldable phone 8 Reports have surfaced online that claim that Samsung’s foldable device will be launched along with its Galaxy S10 lineup in 2019. The device that we saw last week was only a prototype and the foldable phone is also expected to be there at CES 2019. There is no word regarding the sales of the phone yet, but company has said that it will begin mass production in “coming months.”

The competition

Samsung foldable phone 9 The era of foldable phones has officially begun. The ZTE Axon M and Royole FlexPai are already there and other players like LG and Huawei are also working on their foldable phones.

How to recall a sent email in Gmail

Did you just send out an email to your potential employer with an error that will surely spoil your first impression? Or did you inadvertently send an email to your boss that was meant for someone else? These situations can be embarrassing and can often put people in a place they would rather not be in. We have all done this at some point in our lives. We have all been in a situation where we notice an unacceptable error only after hitting the dreadful ‘Send’ button. But then, it’s not exactly something you need to worry about. There is a way you can save yourself from embarrassment the next time something like this happens. But even then, you must be quick as Gmail originally gives users 5 seconds to recall a sent email, but we can tell you how to extend that time up to 30 seconds. But first let’s talk about what you can do to recall a sent email. You must have noticed that each time you send an email a box appears to notify that the email has been sent. If you use the old version of Gmail, then it would appear on the top, and if you have upgraded to the revamped version, it would appear on bottom left. Right after you send the email this box will show you an option of ‘Undo’. You must click it within five seconds of sending the email in order to recall it. But let’s face it. Five seconds are not always enough. Actually, it only works if you change your mind about sending the email the second you hit ‘Send’. And how many times does that happen? So, if you think you would like to have an option of recalling emails on Google‘s popular email service even after five seconds are over, then here’s what you need to do:
  1. Go to the gear icon on top right of the email page.
  2. Scroll down to ‘Settings’.
  3. Go down in ‘General Settings’ to ‘Undo Send.’
  4. You would see a drop-box next to ‘Undo Send’ where the default option of 5 seconds would be selected.
  5. Click on the arrow on the drop-box to select options that are more than 5 seconds. These include 10, 20 and 30 seconds.
  6. Scroll down after selecting the option of your choice and press ‘Save Changes.’
After you do this, Gmail would get refreshed and you’ll be taken again to the main email page. But you don’t have to do anything else apart from this. The time to recall emails will be updated automatically. It is worth noticing that you can alter time to unsend emails on desktop only. In mobile settings, the option is not available.

Facebook’s dating service reaches two more countries

0
At the beginning of the year, Facebook had promised that it would take on dating apps like Tinder and Bumble. In September this year, it kept its promise when it first launched ‘Facebook Dating’ in Colombia. And now, the social networking giant has expanded its feature to two other countries —Canada and Thailand. Facebook Dating includes user-integration with Groups and Events on the social media platform and encourages people to meet in public. But for its test in Canada and Thailand, Facebook has added some new functions. An interesting addition is ‘Second Look’ that enables users to reconsider a dating decision they made previously. According to The Verge, users can now also pause matching if they are no longer looking to date. Also, you needn’t install a separate app for Facebook Dating. It is a feature inside the main Facebook app itself. Facebook believes that by adding new features during these tests, it can get more people to sign up and make Facebook Dating’s user base swell. It wants more people to come to its app and look for a match using its service, the report further said. Although it was first rolled out in September, the internal testing of the service began in August when Facebook asked its employees to create dating profiles with fake data. Facebook plans to delete all of it before it rolls out its feature to public. As of now, the feature is only being tested in select countries with users who are at least 18 years old. It is free of cost and does not have any advertisements or premium features. Personally, considering Facebook’s history of data leaks, we would not want it to have this additional information about us, especially because there already are other apps available for the same purpose. But if you are one among those who do wish to look for love on Facebook using its new service, we’ll keep you updated with more information about Facebook Dating when we hear more about it. Facebook Dating was first announced at the social networking giant’s F8 keynote that was held in San Jose, California in May 2018.

This is what OnePlus 6T teardown reveals about its in-display fingerprint scanner

OnePlus 6T is the first smartphone by the Chinese smartphone company to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor, which also seems to be the latest trend in the smartphone industry. A number of phones have launched this year with the relatively new biometric technology and a number of smartphones are rumoured to follow the trend in the months to come. Amid all this, JerryRigEverything has performed a complete teardown of OnePlus 6T smartphone to show viewers all the internal components if the device. And of course, the highlight of the teardown is the in-display fingerprint sensor of the mobile, which is actually a camera sensor that has been designed to light up when the phone is being operated. The video starts with Zack removing the back panel of the smartphone and then dismantling the battery unit of the device. Then the video shows him removing the black plastic panel that has the NFC chip, which is followed by the dual rear cameras. On removal of dual rear cameras, we can see the presence of OIS on the primary sensor of the newly launched Android smartphone. After that, we can wee the protective plastic case over the fingerprint scanner being removed. The in-display fingerprint scanner lies right above the charging port. Zack then takes the fingerprint sensor out and it is shown that it has a camera lens and a sensor. So it basically works by taking a close-up photo of your fingerprint and uses illuminators on the screen of the smartphone to record the image for unlocking the device in future. After all this, the video shows the smartphone being turned on without the fingerprint sensor. Although the screen worked, but it doesn’t shine backwards. According to Zack, “The LEDs in the screen only shine in one direction – outwards.” To recall, OnePlus announced prior to the launch of OnePlus 6T that the device uses an optical fingerprint sensor rather than an ultrasonic one, which uses sound to record the ridges and pores on the user’s fingerprint. While ultrasonic fingerprint sensors are supposed to be more accurate, optical ones are said to be faster. Oppo and Vivo, which are also owned by OnePlus’ parent company BBK ELectronics, also use an optical fingerprint sensor in their smartphones.

OnePlus 6T Review: Better than before

Let’s face it OnePlus has made a mark in the industry and is one of the fastest selling smartphone brands in India. The company also has the biggest fan following and much of it is loyal. The fan base has been made on an excellent program of invitation only purchase, which worked wonderfully. The tradition continues to linger on, though not on the smartphones but on some of the products like the latest OnePlus backpack. The newest smartphone to come from the firm is the OnePlus 6T that has both – beauty and brains. We tested out the device for a while to understand what makes it tick. This is our review of the OnePlus 6T.

OnePlus 6T’s Design and Display

The “T” version of any OnePlus smartphone is mostly a facelift version of the actual form. But that is not the case with the OnePlus 6T. Yes, it does come in the Midnight Black and Mirror black colour options, but it has its own distinct features that sets it apart. For starters, the OnePlus 6T has a 6.41-inch optic AMOLED display with 19.5:9 aspect ratio, supporting screen resolution of 1,080×2,340 pixels. Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is on top of it for that much needed protection. The notch has been narrowed down to a waterdrop design and the ear speaker has been moved to the extreme top part of the smartphone. The chin has been reduced and overall the display does seem be edge to edge (well, almost). The fingerprint reader has also been moved from the back and placed on the front. It is located under the touchscreen’s bottom part and is quite delightful to work with, especially after the new update they rolled out a day ago. Setting it up was also child’s play. IT comes with three different animations too, so that user always known where he/she is pressing.OnePlus 6T bottom As for the other aesthetics, the power and the ringer button are on the right, and the volume rocker button along with the 4G ready SIM card tray is placed on the left. The bottom part has the MIC and loudspeaker grille along with the USB type C charging port. Flip the phone around and you are greeted by a seen before Mirror Black rear panel, which still is a smudge magnet. However, we are not deducting points here as most smartphones in the category are a fingerprint attractor. The twin cameras also play house on the rear panel with the dual tone LED flash and OnePlus branding under it. The back panel is curved and pushes into the sides, which enabled us to grip the smartphone better. Coming back to the display the screen is great as one can be. We played a lot of YouTube videos and games on it and not once did we feel the display going out of sync or loosing sharpness. HD videos ran really well on it and we were quite happy with the results. The reduced notch did allow us to enjoy videos better since the it does not get too much from the side where the notch is placed.

OnePlus 6T’s Performance, Cameras and Other Features

Under the bonnet the OnePlus 6T is not a significant upgrade, but does give the users what is needed from a premium smartphone. The performance is now slightly better as this smartphone comes with Android P right out of the box with the latest Oxygen OS on top. Incredibly the OS layer on top of the Android P does not slow it down and keeps everything smooth. It is a lovely UI experience on the OnePlus 6T as not once did the system lag on any of the homescreens or when we quickly drew the app drawer. The animations are smooth and apps open in a jiffy. Yes, the OS does come with its set of bloatware, but nothing you cannot get rid of swiftly. Overall, the smartphone uses the new Android OS to its full potential. Above that, the users get OS upgrades for the next two years and security updates for three years. Inside, the OnePlus 6T is powered by the same chipset combo you get on the OnePlus 6. The 6T comes with Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 quadcore chipset, too. The users have three RAM and storage combinations to choose from. These include 6GB RAM/128GB storage, 8GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB RAM/256GB storage options. The one that came to us for review was the 8GB RAM with 128GB storage version. Which we felt is the right combination. You get good amount of RAM for everyday processes and the right amount of storing capacity to go with it. Moving on to the cameras, there are few upgrades now available to the system. Let’s start with the rear cameras first. Powered by a 16 MP + 20 MP sensor array, which has an aperture size of 1.7. The cameras now are able to take better pictures in low light and night thanks to the Nightscape mode. We found the picture sharpness to be much better than the OnePlus 6 on this smartphone, when clicking at night. For really dark places, we suggest to keep the flash on, which will get you even better sharpness when capturing humans or nearby objects. Studio light mode has been added too, to the OnePlus 6T which does a job of highlighting the subjects face in the images. The selfie camera has been shifted to the middle of the screen, which makes it slightly better to take photographs with. Powered by a 20MP sensor with aperture size of 2.0, auto HDR is available on the front camera, just like it is available on the rear ones. Sadly, the night mode is not available here, which we were hoping to see, as the night bird in us would have loved to take selfies using that. Nevertheless, the front camera does a good job when it comes to day and low light selfies. Though at night you do see a bit of colour loss and pixelated edges in the photos, but nothing to be ashamed of.OnePlus 6T night shot When it comes to gaming and running power hungry apps on the OnePlus 6T, this smartphone is one of the best on the Android platform. We ran games like Asphalt 9 on it and boy-o-boy did it play well. The smartphone did warm up a little during this time. The sound experience is also nice just like what we heard on the OnePlus 6. The thuds and thumps are clear on the loudspeaker, however the resonance is even better on the USB type C OnePlus earphones (sold separately). So, you might want to pick one of those in case you like watching Netflix shows or lot of YouTube videos on your mobile. In case you have a 3.5mm headphone you can still use them with this mobile. Since the OnePlus 6T does not come with a 3.5mm audio port the company does supply its customers with a USB type C to 3.5mm adaptor in the box. OnePlus 6T has also seen a battery bump. It is now at 3,700 mAh. This extra bit makes it last for even longer than a day. And our usual day consists of light gaming, a lot of phone calls, YouTube videos et al. All of it on a 4G networks with WiFi enabled. For us it lasted for more than 24 hours and in most cases we were not charging it at night, but fast charging it with the supplied charger and cable in the morning. So, 80-85percetn charge was good enough for it to last till the next morning and more. We found the call quality on the OnePlus 6T to be much better than what it was on OnePlus 6. It is louder and crisper. Same is the case when talking using the loudspeaker. Other features of the OnePlus 6T include WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 5.0. A-GPS, Adreno 630 GPU, 4K video recording (which comes out to be very close to life during the day time), NFC, Gyro and proximity sensors. On the assessment bench the OnePlus 6T got 8,922 points on Geekbench 4 multicore CPU test and 14,077 points on its compute test. Both indicating high-end performance.

OnePlus 6T’s Verdict and Final Words

Transferring all our data from the OnePlus 6 to the OnePlus 6T was super easy. Just use the OnePlus switch app that is already available on it, select the things you want to transfer and within minutes you will be up and running on the new smartphone. Yes, some apps required downloading them again, but the rest of the data was intact. We had a gala time with the cameras as well, especially in the night. But, what troubled us the most is the price bracket OnePlus is taking its new version of smartphones to. They are now playing in the 45k – 60K category where they will be up against big players likes Samsung and Apple. We still feel that the sub-40K market is best for OnePlus. However, times do change quickly. Will it still be the highest selling premium smartphone in India? We shall get to know in a quarters time. All in all, if you can spend a little over 40K and are looking for good cameras and excellent performance from an Android smartphone then the 8GB RAM with 128GB version of OnePlus 6T at Rs 41,999 will do you right. Pros: Good Cameras Longer Battery Life Larger display with better body to screen ratio Cons: Price might pinch some No 3.5mm audio port

With stickers finally making their way to WhatsApp, conversations on the instant messaging app have surely become more fun. Google’s dark mode can prolong your Android smartphone’s battery life

It has been a known fact that enabling the dark mode is an easy way to enhance the battery life of smartphones that sport an OLED screen. And it’s not something that works exclusively with only Android smartphones or iPhones. The case is the same with both. The reason behind this is that on dark areas of the screen, individual pixels have to do much less work and they use almost no battery while displaying true black on the smartphone’s screen. According to Slashgear, this was reinforced by Google during its Android Dev Summit this week. The technology giant showed a number of slides comparing how much battery is used to display different colours. To get these data points, Google used its Pixel smartphone. According to the chart shared by Google, Black used the least amount of juice, followed by Red, Green, Blue and White. White towers over all the other colours and used the most power. With this, Google realised that having white as the most prominent theme colour across its apps is not a very good idea. Even in Google’s revamped Material Design, white colour is practically everywhere. But on the upside, Google does realize the importance of Dark mode. The company has already rolled out the theme to YouTube and Android Messages and Google will be getting it to its Phone app. The technology giant is also testing the feature in the mobile Google Feed. As of now, Android users can set a dark theme for quick settings and app drawer, but a system-wide night mode is not available yet. Another chart that shows the difference between dark mode and normal mode on YouTube has been shared by Google. At 100% brightness, the difference between the battery used by the two modes is 60%. If one can save that much battery of their device by just switching to Dark Mode, we recommend you to do it right away. Moreover, the Dark Mode is said to be better for our eyes too and we personally felt a lot less strain on our eyes when we first enabled it on our YouTube app. So it’s definitely worth a shot for anyone using an Android device. These Samsung flagship smartphones would not receive Android Pie-Based One UI update

Samsung unveiled its brand new UI when it introduced the world to its much talked about foldable phone. Although Samsung Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+, and Galaxy Note 9 will be getting updated to Android Pie based One UI next year, reports have suggested that the company has no plans of rolling out the update to Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8. The South Korean technology giant’s flagships from last year are running Samsung Experience UX and don’t have support for one-handed features that will come to devices with One UI. According to a report in Tom Guide, it has been confirmed by Samsung that its Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+, and Galaxy Note 8 will “miss out” on the One UI experience. However, at Samsung Developer Conference 2018, the company announced that Android Pie-based One UI would come to Galaxy S9, Galaxy S9+ and Galaxy Note 9 smartphones. It also said that users should expect to get the update by January next year. An open beta programme for the update would begin this month itself in the United States, Germany and Samsung’s home country South Korea. These will be followed by countries in Europe and Asia. One UI by Samsung is supposed to deliver a “more natural and comfortable” one-handed user experience than the one that is currently available on Samsung Experience UX. With One UI, Samsung has transformed the upper part of the display for viewing and the lower part of it has been dedicated to touch interaction. One UI has also rearranged the options in Settings to provide relative functions together and tabs on pre-installed apps have been made more accessible by moving them from top to bottom. According to Samsung, the main aim of the new interface is to provide a less cluttered experience than the one available right now. As of now, there is no clarity on whether Samsung’s last year flagship smartphones — Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 — would receive an Android 9.0 Pie update with Samsung Experience UX. They were initially launched with Android Nougat with Samsung Experience UX baked on top and all three have got an update for Android Oreo.
