Redmi Go vs Nokia 1: Comparison

Xiaomi has today launched its most affordable smartphone in India – Redmi Go. The handset runs Android 8.1 Oreo (Go Edition) and competes with other entry-level smartphones in the Indian smartphone market. Considering its price, the closest competitor of the Redmi Go is Nokia 1 which offers similar specifications. The Nokia 1 was launched way back in March 2018. But, even though the Nokia 1 is one year old, it offers similar performance and has a very similar specification sheet as the newly launched Redmi Go. It is fair that everyone has the Redmi Go vs Nokia 1 comparison on their minds.

It should be noted that both these smartphones are aimed for the first-time Android smartphone users so they offer specifications which proves ample for the simple day-to-day use. Nokia 1’s successor – Nokia 1 Plus –  has recently been launched at MWC 2019. Although some may argue that Nokia 1 Plus would have been a more eligible competitor for the Redmi Go, the smartphone has not been launched in India yet so we don’t know about its pricing details.

Here, we are comparing the Redmi Go with the Nokia 1 so that you will have an easy time deciding which smartphone to go for:

Display

Redmi Go: 5-inch HD display

Nokia 1:  4.5-inch FWVGA IPS display

Processor

Redmi Go: Quad-core Snapdragon 425 processor

Nokia 1: Quad-core MT6737M processor

Primary Camera

Nokia 1: 5MP sensor with LED flash

Secondary Camera

Redmi Go: 5MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture

Nokia 1: 2 MP selfie camera

RAM and storage

Redmi Go: 1GB RAM with 8GB storage

Nokia 1: 1GB RAM with 8GB storage

Expandable storage

Redmi Go: Yes, up to 128GB

Nokia 1: Yes, up to 128GB

Battery

Redmi Go: 3,000mAh battery

Nokia 1: 2,150mAh battery

Operating system

Redmi Go: Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition)

Nokia 1: Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition)

Starting price

Redmi Go: Rs 4,499

Nokia 1: Rs 4,599

On one hand Redmi Go offers a good set of specifications and on the other hand, Nokia 1 is made by HMD Global, which is known to roll out timely Android updates and security patches. Redmi Go and Nokia 1 offers similar specifications in the same price range. It can be said that they both are the cheapest offering in the smartphone segment from Xiaomi and HMD Global. Both are priced at the sub-5K price segment and are a part of Google’s Android Go program. And in the end, it all comes down to choices and personal preference, people can either go for the Snapdragon offered by Redmi Go or they can opt for MediaTek offered by Nokia 1.

Samsung will be hosting press events in Milan, Bangkok and Sao Paulo and the event will be live-streamed on Samsung’s official YouTube channel.

Although the company has not yet specified the named of the smartphones it will be launching in April, but it will be another Galaxy A-series device. The South Korean technology giant has already launched three A-series devices namely Samsung Galaxy A10, Galaxy A30 and Galaxy A50. So, we could see the launch of a much-leaked device – Samsung Galaxy A90. There is also a possibility that Samsung will be launching its Galaxy A40, Galaxy A60 and Galaxy A70 at the event.

Samsung’s official invite reads that the company will ‘unveil its latest Galaxy A devices’ at the event so we can assume that there will be more than one devise launching on April 10. Out of all the devices mentioned above, Samsung Galaxy A90 and the Galaxy A40 have the highest possibility of being launched because they were earlier spotted on the company’s official website. However, along with them, more smartphones of the Galaxy A-series could be launched.

Samsung Galaxy A90 was earlier spotted on the company’s official US website where it was mentioned alongside the Galaxy S10 series devices which were to receive special Asphalt 9 gifts. According to the concept renders and leaks, Samsung Galaxy A90 might come with a sliding and rotating camera or a pop-up selfie camera. There might also be a new Infinity Display without a notch or hole-punch. Samsung Galaxy A90 will reportedly come with a 6.41-inch display and will be powered by Snapdragon 710 SoC.

Microsoft’s Halo: The Master Chief Collection can be tested by PC players ahead of release

Software giant Microsoft has announced that as a part of its Halo Insider Program, PC players will be able to sign up to test the upcoming Halo: The Master Chief Collection. We should mention that the Halo: The Master Chief Collection version will be rolled out on Windows this year, however, there is no confirmed date of launch that we know of yet.

The PC port of developer Bungie’s Halo trilogy, besides Halo: Reach and Halo 3: ODST, will be available on Microsoft’s Store as well as Valve’s Steam marketplace, both of which are popular among gamers. We should mention that the collection was initially launched on Xbox One in 2014.

The company has spoken about it on its dedicated Halo Insider page saying, “As a Halo Insider, you’ll have the opportunity to regularly provide feedback and insights that help shape and inform current franchise initiatives and the future of Halo. You will also be given exclusive opportunities to participate in public flights of in-progress Halo game releases and provide feedback to the development teams.”

The software giant has said that the entire collection will not be released at once. Rather, it will begin with Halo: Reach, which we should mention was not a part of the original Xbox version. In addition to this, Microsoft also stated that Halo: Reach will be made available in 4K/60 fps and will have support for HDR. However, you would only be able to enjoy the version with 4K/60 fps with HDR support if you own the collection on Xbox and play it on an Xbox One X console.

However, we must also point out that a drawback here. The collection would not be a part of the Xbox Anywhere program, which lets players get a game that has been published by Microsoft on either PC or Xbox. The program makes the games accessible and at times, even interoperable across various platforms.

According to a report in Kotaku, Microsoft made the announcement during a panel discussion at Austin’s South by Southwest festival. Bonnie Ross, the studio head at 343 Industries spoke about the development at the event saying, “One of the questions we’ve gotten is will MCC PC support Xbox Play Anywhere, and first off I want to say we so appreciate all of the support we’ve had from the Xbox One community with MCC and we’re obviously bringing Reach to MCC. While MCC shipped before the XPA Play Anywhere, we are exploring ways to make sure that we show our appreciation and recognition for the support we’ve had from the amazing fans on MCC and we’ll have more to announce as we get closer to launch.”

Netflix would not be a part of Apple’s video streaming service

0

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple is all set to unveil its new video service next week. However, even now, there are a number of things that we don’t know about Apple’s plans. But today, we know one thing for sure: Netflix is definitely not a part of Apple’s video service plans.

This has been confirmed by none other than Netflix CEO Reed Hastings. He has clarified that the company would not be selling its subscriptions via the hub that Apple will be launching. Apple’s platform will be a lot like Amazon‘s which sells services like HBO and Showtime. We should also add here that Facebook is also working on a very similar idea.

Speaking to Recode, Hastings said, “Apple’s a great company. We want to have people watch our shows on our services.”

We should say that is was expected as Netflix already dominates the video streaming space and it has been consistently been distancing itself from Apple if you trace back the last few years. Interestingly, this is exactly the period when Apple developed an interest in launching its own video service.

And this is not the first time when Netflix has counted itself out of an Apple service. To recall, in 2016, the Cupertino-based technology giant launched a new TV app which was supposed to be a digital TV guide. No surprises here: Netflix did not sign up for it.

When asked about this, the company’s content head Ted Sarandos said that Apple is not an important source of revenue for Netflix.

However, now there are going to be a number of other companies that Netflix will have to deal with including Apple, Disney and WarnerMedia. Speaking on how Netflix plans to compete with them, Hastings was quick to say “with difficulty.” On a more optimistic note, he added, “These are amazing, large, well-funded companies … but you do your best job when you have great competitors.”

We should add that the CEO has maintained this even when he was asked previously about competition like HBO and Amazon. He has also pointed out that those services and Netflix have grown simultaneously, which means that the success of his video streaming platform does not have to be at any other service’s expense.

But considering that the number of services is now going up, not all of them will succeed as video streaming space is getting increasingly competitive now.

Although there will be some people who would subscribe to Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple, Disney Plus, HBO and others. However, there wouldn’t be too many such people.

Huawei P30 Pro to sport Samsung’s AMOLED display panel: Report

Huawei upcoming flagship devices, the P30 and the P30 Pro are scheduled to launch on March 26 at an event in Paris, France. In the last couple of weeks Huawei’s upcoming smartphones have been in talks for one reason or the other. And now, a new report suggests that the upcoming Huawei P30 Pro will sport Samsung’s AMOLED display panel.

Samsung has reportedly made a contract with the Chinese smartphone manufacturer for supplying curved AMOLED display panels for Huawei’s upcoming flagship smartphone. It should be noted that Huawei might take the contract off from its previous partners – LG and BOE to use Samsung’s AMOLED panel in its upcoming smartphones. The reason for the change of business partners is said to be Samsung’s production capability where it can produce and offer high quality display panels to the Chinese smartphone manufacturer. Although there is no official news from both the companies about the supply of OLED panels, but it is expected to be announced in the coming days.

The information about the contract between the South Korean technology giant and Huawei comes from a tipster on Weibo who reports that Samsung will be the only supplier of AMOLED panels for the Huawei P30 Pro. The report further states that Huawei will be taking the curved display panels from Samsung on a large scale. For this reason, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer might have to break ties with its previous partners who supplied OLED panels to Huawei – LG and BOE. And with this new deal, we will reportedly see AMOLED display panels in the future Huawei P-series and Mate-series smartphones, both of which are high-end devices.

The exact reason and the type of the business contract between Samsung and Huawei is still unknown but it is being speculated that Huawei wants to use Samsung’s OLED panels in their smartphones. And it is a known fact throughout the smartphone industry that Samsung produces great quality of OLED panel, which is also the reason Apple uses the company’s display panels on its flagships. Samsung’s latest flagship device – the Galaxy S10 has received DisplayMate’s highest ranking – A+ in its display quality which further proves the point.

But it should be noted that LG’s OLED panels, which Huawei used in the Mate 20 Pro, had a display bleeding issue which created greenish tint at the edges of the display. So, Huawei’s partnership with Samsung might mean that it wants to use the best OLED panels for its upcoming flagship devices.

Black Shark 2 render revealed by the CEO Peter Wu before its launch

Xiaomi’s gaming smartphone sub-brand, Black Shark is all set to launch the second iteration in its line-up of gaming smartphones in China today – the Black Shark 2. But before the official launch of the smartphone, its official render has been shared by the company’s CEO Peter Wu. According to the render, the Black Shark 2 comes without a notch and features a premium metal build with rounded corners. There was also a controller placed besides the Black Shark 2 in the render image which indicates that the device will come with the new circular touchpad controller.

It is already known that the Black Shark 2 will be powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC. The smartphone has been spotted on benchmark platforms twice before its launch. But it should be noted that the design and the build of the Black Shark 2 was unknown, till now. Some new gaming accessories are also rumoured to be tagged along inside the box of the Black Shark 2.

Other specifications of the Black Shark 2 include a Liquid Col 3.0 technology which lets the device stay cool even during intense gaming and heavy work load. And it might come with 8GB/12GB or RAM to aid the users in multitasking.

Google+ public posts will be preserved by Internet Archive before it is shut down

After Google+ suffered a data breach that was brought to light last year, the technology giant announced that it will be closing down the social networking platform in April 2019. Considering that the said date is now just weeks away, the Internet Archive and the ArchiveTeam has said that it is working to preserve public posts on Google+ before Google begins deleting all the data next month. If this is not done, even the public posts on the platform will vanish forever.

The websites took to Reddit to explain the method that they are taking to archive the posts. The post on Reddit says that scripts will be used to capture the data and back it up in order to keep them safe. However, it has been pointed out by the teams that their efforts will focus on only on the posts that are visible to the public and they would not be able to take a backup of the posts that have been marked as private by the user. And needless to say, even the ones that have been deleted would not be archived too.

The teams have also asked people who do not wish to have their data archived to go and delete their Google+ accounts. A procedure that can be followed to remove specific content from the social media website has also been specified. However, even in the posts that will be archived, the teams would not be able to capture everything.

For instance, comment threads will have a limit of 500 comments when being recorded, “but only presents a subset of these as static HTML. It’s not clear that long discussion threads will be preserved.” It has also been mentioned that images and videos from Google+ will not be saved at full resolution.

As we mentioned earlier, Google+ saw a major data breach last year in October. While Google said that its platform has “low usage and engagement” and a majority of sessions on the social media website only lasted for roughly 5 seconds. Although even back then Google announced that its social media website will be closed down, the timeline was shifted after the platform suffered a second data breach. The new timeline for deletion of all consumer data was decided to be April 2.

However, in February this year, the company stopped letting users create new profile pages and communities on Google+.

The teams that have posted on Reddit have said that their mission is to preserve parts of internet so that people will be able to look at them in future. They have also added that they save contents from popular websites before they are shut down or die a slow death.

Majority of Android antivirus apps are not reliable or effective: Report

There are hundreds of anti-virus apps for Android and other mobile platforms and they have only one task to perform – to keep smartphones secure and free from viruses. But according to a recent report, a majority of anti-virus and anti-malware apps for Android are unreliable and ineffective.

A report states that Austrian antivirus testing company AV-Comparatives chose 138 vendors including Avast, AVG, Cheetah Mobile, DU Master, BitDefender, ESET, Falcon Security Lab, and others, that have their antivirus apps up on the Google Play. Then, 250 antivirus apps were tested manually.  The apps were installed on Android devices in order to run an automated process which involved opening a web browser and downloading a malicious app on the same device. The process was followed 2,000 times to observe the apps’ behaviours and it led to a final outcome that most of the apps weren’t able to detect the virus or malware.

We should also add that among the antiviruses that were put to test, 170 of them failed in the basic detection tests while only 23 of the antiviruses managed to detect 100 percent of the malware samples. Surprisingly, 16 of the antiviruses in the list of apps that were tested didn’t even support Android 8.0 Oreo or above.

However, in the testing done by the AV-Comparatives, there were some antiviruses which were able to detect and block the malicious apps. But as mentioned earlier, there were a majority of antivirus apps which were able to detect the some of the old malicious apps and samples and allowed other apps which contained certain strings, they used a ‘whitelist’ for the protection.

However, the most shocking finding in these test was that some of these Android antivirus apps detected themselves as malicious apps since their vendors hadn’t added their own package name to the whitelist. But there were some apps which were noticed with wildcards to allow packages beginning with text such as ‘com.adobe’. Such packages were allowed to enter the system without effort, however this could be a way for the hackers to bypass the security and enter the system using similar package names.

The AV-Comparatives team noted that since they tested 2,000 of the most common Android malware threats that were prevalent last year, the detection rates were between 90 to 100 percent. These numbers could easily be achieved if an effective anti-malware app is used.

Facebook invested its money at the right place when it acquired instant messenger WhatsApp and photo-sharing app Instagram. Today, when the popularity of the native social media platform has gone down compared to what it was a few years back, the two apps that it acquired continue to be people’s favourites.

However, it is also a known fact that some key people from WhatsApp and Instagram eventually left the company sometime after their apps were acquired. The reason for this was always said to be disagreements about how the apps should be taken forward.

One among these key people who left is WhatsApp co-founder Brian Acton, who recently went to Stanford University as a speaker. At the university, he shed light on the decision to sell his company to Facebook and then went on to advise students about deleting their accounts on the social media platform.

According to a report in BuzzFeed News, Acton made an appearance at the undergraduate course called Computer Science 181 along with the founder of Ellora Israni, who is also a former Facebook employee. During his speech, Acton pointed out his reasons for selling WhatsApp to Facebook and then told the class about why he left the company. He then went on to criticize Facebook’s decision to prioritize monetization of the app over user privacy.

He then urged people to deactivate their Facebook accounts. Acton said, “These companies are not equipped to make these decisions. And we give them the power. That’s the bad part. We buy their products. We sign up for these websites. Delete Facebook, right?”

Since Acton left Facebook in 2017 over the company’s desire to monetize its services including WhatsApp, he has been very vocal about his criticism about the social networking platform. We should add here that this is not the first time that Acton has asked people to delete their Facebook accounts. After Facebook’s Cambridge Analytica scandal came to light last year, Acton had called people to delete their accounts from the platform for the first time.

To recall, last year, Facebook was embroiled in one data breach after another and the social networking giant has faced a lot of criticism over not valuing user privacy and not being careful enough about their data. After Acton, Instagram founders had also quit Facebook citing similar reasons for disagreement.

The company had already monetized Instagram with advertisements in News Feed as well as in Stories. And soon, ads are expected to come in WhatsApp Status too.

Spotify calls Apple a ‘monopolist’ as their tension escalates further: Report

The tension between Apple and music streaming service Spotify is catching fire as the two companies continue to take jabs at each other. Last week, it was reported that Spotify had filed a complaint against Apple in the EU anti-trust regulators where it blamed Apple for playing fair as they limited the app’s reach to its users. Following this, Apple countered by saying that Spotify wanted all the benefits of a free app without being free. Now, the tension between Apple and Spotify has escalated even further as Spotify called Apple a ‘monopolist’ and the Cupertino-based technology giant has gone out of its way to write an aggressive statement, which is not something that Apple is known for.

Yesterday, Apple stated on its Newsroom page that the company leaves out the fact that Apple’s fee for use of the secure in-app purchase servers is cut down to 15 percent after the first year of use from 30 percent. They also went on to state that the Cupertino-based company had always helped Spotify with Apple’s Siri and AirPlay 2 compatibility issues.

Apple further added, “Let’s be clear about what that means. Apple connects Spotify to our users. We provide the platform by which users download and update their app. We share critical software development tools to support Spotify’s app building. And we built a secure payment system — no small undertaking — which allows users to have faith in in-app transactions. Spotify is asking to keep all those benefits while also retaining 100 percent of the revenue. Spotify wouldn’t be the business they are today without the App Store ecosystem, but now they’re leveraging their scale to avoid contributing to maintaining that ecosystem for the next generation of app entrepreneurs. We think that’s wrong.”

After Apple’s statement, Variety quoted a Spotify executive saying “Every monopolist will suggest they have done nothing wrong and will argue that they have the best interests of competitors and consumers at heart. In that way, Apple’s response to our complaint before the European Commission is not new and is entirely in line with our expectations. We filed our complaint because Apple’s actions hurt competition and consumers and are in clear violation of the law. This is evident in Apple’s belief that Spotify’s users on iOS are Apple customers and not Spotify customers, which goes to the very heart of the issue with Apple. We respect the process the European Commission must now undertake to conduct its review.”

Last week, the music streaming service had filed a complaint against the Cupertino-based company that they were not playing fair as they limited Spotify’s reach to its users as they gave their own platform – Apple Music more priority. Spotify’s complaint was over Apple Tax and restrictive rules that the company imposes on apps which are part of the App Store. Spotify went further to claim in its complaint that apps and companies who are not willing to pay 30 percent cut of the in-app purchases were prohibited from linking to or even mentioning any means of alternative payment by Apple. Spotify had also stated that Apple uses its power over its platform to make the App Store an ‘uneven playing field’. To which Apple rebutted Spotify’s remarks saying that ‘time to play fair’.
