Samsung Galaxy S20+ Review: The 2020 flagship all of us have been waiting for

Recently, Samsung unleashed three new smartphones in India. Yes, we are talking about the Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra. These are the first set of flagships by the company in the year 2020. They are built to outperform any smartphone in the market as they come with the latest tech specs and style. We got to play around with the Samsung Galaxy S20+ and have been tinkering with the smartphone for over 2 weeks now. Did it impress us? Well, read the rest of our review of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ to know that and more.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Design and Display

Samsung has been building great smartphones since a very long time and what their designers excel at is making great looking smartphones. This time, however, the theme got a little subtler. There are no flowing edge displays, instead, the form factor has been kept very vanilla, yet appealing. Available in a plethora of colours we got the Cosmic Grey over to our headquarters, which we must say is a very cool colour to own.

Moving on, the design of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ includes a metal band running on the sides of the device. This has the power and volume buttons on the right side, while the primary microphone, USB-C charging port and the speaker grille are placed at the bottom. The top part has the secondary MIC and the dual SIM tray. Flip it around and you would get to see an army of cameras. These are situated in a rectangular camera bump, which also has a third microphone for videos along with a LED flash. The rear has a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 6, which can also be seen on the front.Samsung-Galaxy-s20+-bottom

Talking about which, yes, the front of the Samsung Galaxy S20+ also has CG6 on top of a 6.7-inch AMOLED display. The company has also pre-placed a screen protector on top of the display. This is Samsung’s Infinity O display that comes with a selfie camera punch hole in the top middle part of the screen. This does not hinder the viewing much and we could barely make it out when watching YouTube or Netflix videos. Further, the display supports 20:9 aspect ratio, 1,440 x 3,200 pixels resolution and 120Hz refresh rate. This means the screen can refresh 120 times in one second.

So, what does the high refresh rate do? Simply put, the user interface becomes more fluid. However, if you increase the refresh rate, it will use up more battery. Here we used it every day with the 120Hz refresh rate on, so our battery test will be with that, read about it at the end of the article. Moving on, the sunlight legibility of the screen is superb and the character sharpness is top-notch.

We loved the gaming experience on the Samsung Galaxy S20+. It does a fabulous job with the colours and the smooth display did give us the edge in games such as Mario Kart and Asphalt 9 legends. Things like edge lighting, blue light filter and edge apps panel also come in this smartphone. All in all, Samsung has built close to perfect flatscreen for this mobile device.

Samsung Galaxy S20+ Performance

To tell you the truth we had a lot of expectations from the Samsung Galaxy S20+ when it was launched. After using it for a while, we were happy with most of its aspects, except one. Can you guess which one, without reading further down? Tell us in the comments if you guessed it right?

On paper, the Samsung Galaxy S20+ is a tank. It comes with Exynos 990 chipset that has an Octa-core CPU running at a max clock speed of 2.73GHz. Graphics are provided by Mali-G77 MP11 chip and this setup is partnered with 12GB RAM/128GB storage (with UFS 3.0). A 256GB variant is also available for people who need more storage. So, before anything else, we quickly downloaded benchmarks such as GeekBench 4. It scored 4,757 points on the single-core score and 11,688 on multi-core score. The compute test on GeekBench 4 gave us a score of 8,819.Geekbench-score-Samung-Galaxy-S20+

Jumping on the OS (operating system) side, the Samsung Galaxy S20+ comes packs the Android 10 with Samsung UI 2.0 out of the box. As said, the smartphone comes with a 120Hz screen so it enhances the whole OS outlook. There is minimal bloatware since it is a premium smartphone. The quick settings menu comes down when you swipe down from the top and a sperate app drawer in this smartphone is a boon in our books. The navigation can be either kept as screen buttons or gestures. We personally like the gestures as that makes it more intuitive. Users can go back to the previous screen by swiping up from the bottom right, back to home screen by swiping from the bottom middle and will show all the open apps if you swipe up from the bottom left. Over that, assistant menu floating button can also be enabled that does all this and more.

Let’s switch gears and come to the cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S20+. The rear panel of the smartphone holds 4 cameras. This includes 12MP wide sensor, 64MP telephoto, 12MP ultrawide and 0.3MP Time of Flight (TOF) camera. We thoroughly used the cameras and this is the part where we got mixed performance. While the images indoors and outdoors in the wide and ultrawide mode were exceptional, we got inconsistent imagery with the 64MP telephoto camera. Some subjects lost sharpness in this mode and colours also were not up to the mark in low light.

To turn it on one would need to switch over to the 64MP mode, which only works in 4:3 ratio. Otherwise, you would need to switch to the other two lenses that also support up to 30X digital zoom. Here, (when zoomed) you will not get the same clarity as you will get when zoomed out, but you are able to capture faraway objects with decent clarity. Shots in the night mode also gave us mixed results. While some with less ambient light came out of to be good, the ones that were clicked in absolute darkness lost a lot of details.

Skipping over the single 10MP selfie camera of the Samsung Galaxy S20+, we were quite happy with it. The colours were good, the sharpness was nice and there is no shutter lag. When clicked in low light the pictures still came out to better than expected. Videos on the rear cameras can be shot in 8K 24FPS and that is another plausible effort by the company. This is the first by Samsung in any of their smartphones and will give video creators the edge. The quality here is very good and colours pop out more under good lighting conditions. The front camera supports 4K videos at 60FPS and here too we were able to get some fabulous videos.

The battery was another aspect we were happy with. Since it has 4,500 mAh battery inside we knew it would last for long. But then when we started discussing the 120Hz display amongst the team, a small sense of doubt did come. Nonetheless, all of it was put to rest once we started using it. We got a full day of battery life with the 120Hz display mode on. Our usage included 2 hours of gaming, a full day of making or receiving calls on the 4G network with WiFi on. This is not bad at all for 4,500 mAh rechargeable cell. The sound of the device is also great. You get twin speakers on it (the ear speaker doubles up as the second loudspeaker), which are quite loud. A pair of AKG headphones are also supplied in the box, that also supply good resonance for videos and games.

Verdict

All in all, at Rs 73,999 Samsung Galaxy S20+ is a winner if you want top-level performance, superb gaming capability, exceptional display and a rather good camera zoom mode. Yes, the 64MP sensor could be better, but going by past record of Samsung they will patch it up in one of the upcoming updates. Frankly, the price did surprise us as the company has kept it competitive. If you are looking for a flagship that can stay with you for the next couple of years and do not want to break the bank, your search ends here.

Pros

120Hz display

Good selfie camera

8K video recording

Cons

64MP sensor needs tweaking

Sony’s next-generation PlayStation 5 console to have Ray Tracing, 3D Audio

0

With fans eagerly waiting to know more about Sony’s next-generation gaming console PlayStation 5 (PS5), the company has finally lifted curtains off its technical and hardware components revealing that it will comprise of the ultra-high-speed SSD, integrated custom I/O system, custom AMD GPU with ray tracing, and 3D audio.

It is believed that these new specification of PS5 will allow developers to be more creativity, building expansive worlds and new play experiences in the games they design.

According to Mark Cerny, lead system architect for PlayStation 5, “PS5’s ultra-high-speed SSD and integrated custom I/O system were developed with the goal of removing barriers to play – specifically loading screens. Developers are able to stream assets into PS5 games at an incredibly fast rate, so PS5 play experiences can be seamless and dynamic, with near-instantaneous fast travel through large game worlds.”

Apart from this, there is a custom GPU in PlayStation 5. The AMD Radeon RDNA 2-based graphics engine will allow for higher resolution in games.

Moreover, the new feature of ray tracing also seems to be interesting. With a variable frequency of up to 2.23 GHz (that is 10.3 TERAFLOPS), the company revealed that ray tracing will render objects much more accurately, and with heightened realism. This means that water, glass, light refraction, a character’s hair etc. will look even more realistic.

Moving on to the 3D audio tech that has been designed for the PlayStation 5, Sony has revealed that “the sounds you hear while playing will offer a greater sense of presence and locality. You’ll be able to hear raindrops hitting different surfaces all around you, and you can hear and precisely locate where an enemy is lurking behind you.”

In addition to this, an official PS5 blog post has stated that PlayStation 5 users will also be able to play the top 100 PS4 titles ranked by play time owing to the backwards compatibility feature. Isn’t that interesting?

There is more good news for gamers as PlayStation Store has come out with a Mega March offers deals up to 50% on a massive sale line-up. This sale has started on March 18, 2020 and will continue till March 30. Gamers can explore and conquer hundreds of titles, including Borderlands 3, Resident Evil 2, etc. Check out the list on PS Store.

How to identify and avoid downloading fake Coronavirus Tracking app

The spread of Coronavirus in India as well as in other parts of the world is currently on the rise. Even the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced that COVID-19 is a pandemic. In consideration of the ongoing global pandemic of coronavirus disease, Microsoft has launched a web portal for tracking COVID-19 infections worldwide. Whereas the other tech giant, Google is still working on a coronavirus screening and tracking website.

While everyone is panicking as well as curious to know what’s going on in the world many malicious tracking apps have started rising up for Android as well as iOS devices. These fake apps attract users to provide information or maps which will show the confirmed cases of Coronavirus affected people in their neighbourhood. If you have downloaded this app to know about the sick people around you for your information there isn’t any app that is capable of tracking the affected people around you. We would recommend you to immediately uninstall the app from your phone and install an antivirus or antimalware app to clean your device properly.

Instead, Microsoft’s web portal will definitely provide up-to-date infection statistics for each country. It contains data collected from sources such as the Organization (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). Currently, it is showing 147 total confirmed cases in India out of which 14 have recovered and three fatal cases. It also suggests new videos related to the disease in the country.

Over that, the internet is also flooded with information related to COVID-19 out of which there are videos that are misleading and spreading dangerous information to people across the globe. To this Google has taken a strong step by taking down thousands of such videos from its platform with the help of Artificial Intelligence-based technology. The company has also announced a temporary ban on all ads for medical masks and respirators. The company has collaborated with the US government and is developing a tracking web portal so that it can provide information, education and prevention as well as local resources.

The Google CEO, Sunder Pichai said in his blog post, “On YouTube, we’ve taken down thousands of videos related to dangerous or misleading coronavirus information, and we continue to remove videos that promote medically unproven methods to prevent coronavirus in place of seeking medical treatment. On Google Maps, our automated and manual review systems continue to take down false and harmful content such as fake reviews and misleading information about healthcare locations.”

However, there are rumours that release date of PS5 could be delayed as shipment of this gaming console could not be possible due to the Coronavirus global pandemic. We reserve our final statement until and unless it’s officially said.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max to get Time of Flight feature

A few months back Apple introduced its latest iPhone 11 series. Not much time has passed but rumours related to its upcoming iPhone 12 series have already started surfing on the internet. Some reports now suggest that Apple’s upcoming line up will include iPhone 12 pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. It is reportedly to feature Time of Flight (ToF) sensors. This feature has been spotted in the code of iOS 14 for enhanced depth sensing to improve the camera capabilities as well as AR. This time the company will be offering four cameras instead of a triple rear camera set up on the Apple iPhone 12 series.

According to a report by 9to5Mac Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max and iPhone 12 Pro is going to include Time of Flight (ToF) sensors. The feature has been spotted inside the iOS 14 code. The publisher confirmed that inside the code the new iPhone models from its upcoming lineup were also spotted.

The new camera set on the iPhone 12 line up will include a time-of-flight 3D sensor along with a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide lens, and a telephoto lens which indicates that this time the devices will also come with a quad rear camera set up. The smartphone company is also working on a new augmented reality (AR) application for iOS 14 that let the user get more information about the world with the help of AR

The ToF sensor is said to include an infrared projector that is alike the front-facing TrueDepth camera present in iPhone X as well as its latest models. This will allow the device to capture point clouds from the environment in order to produce 3D models. The ToF is actually related to the Measure app that turns your phone into a tape measure to calculate the measurement of an object from multiple angles.

Previously Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also mentioned last year that in the coming year that is 2020 two of the Apple devices could feature time-of-flight sensors in the rear camera.

Separately another report also suggests that the company is also developing new affordable budget iPhones and those will be Apple iPhone 9 and iPhone 9 Plus. The Apple iPhone 9 will carry similar design factors as of iPhone 6 which features a 4.7-inch LCD as well as a TouchID. Whereas iPhone 9 Plus is rumoured to feature a 5.5-inch display.

IQOO 3 5G review: Excellent for gamers

Vivo’s sub-brand IQOO recently launched its IQOO 3 5G smartphone in India at a starting price of Rs 36,999. The device comes with a number of high-end specifications like (the latest chipset) Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, up to 256GB of internal storage and four cameras including a 48MP primary lens. With these specifications, the smartphone seems to be great on paper. We spent a few days with it to see if it is as good as the company claims it to be and here’s our review of IQOO 3 5G:

IQOO 3 5G design and display

As always, let’s begin by talking about the design of the mobile. The smartphone has a very sturdy built and its look and feel is very pleasing. It has a premium design and comes across as way more expensive than what it actually is. The IQOO 3 5G smartphone is made up of glass and its back panel comes with a gradient design. The handset is available Tornado Black, Quantum Silver and Volcano Orange colour options and the one that we got for review was dressed in black.

IQOO 3 5G 3

Since the smartphone is made up of glass, it catches fingerprints rather easily. So, we would suggest that you always keep a micro-fibre cloth with yourself to keep your handset clean. The back panel of the device also houses its camera module and has the IQOO branding. The edges of the IQOO 3 5G house the power and the volume rocker keys on the right side, while the Google Assistant key is placed on the left. The 3.5mm headphone jack and the secondary microphone are at the top, while the bottom edge has the SIM tray, speaker grille, the Type-C port and the microphone.

Flip over and you’ll see the 6.44-inch Full HD+ E3 Super AMOLED display that has an aspect ratio of 20:9 and comes with 2.5D curved glass. The screen of the smartphone also has support for HDR10+ video playback and comes with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits.

Bezels that outline the display of the device are thicker than the ones we have seen on other devices that we have reviewed recently. But then, there’s enough real estate and you can’t really term them as ‘thick’. The smartphone also has a punch-hole selfie camera on the top right of its display. A very key feature of the screen of the smartphone is that it has a touch response rate of 180Hz. We should mention that this is an added advantage for gamers as most phones have a touch response rate of 60Hz.

IQOO 3 5G 4

The colours that are projected on the display of IQOO 3 5G are vibrant and accurate. The images are sharp and clear and watching videos, and playing games was a treat. In fact, we spent hours watching Netflix on this smartphone. The sunlight readability of the device was good too.

In a nutshell, we would say that the design and the display of IQOO 3 5G can both be counted amongst its pros.

IQOO 3 5G performance and cameras

Before we begin talking about the performance of IQOO 3 5G, let’s shed some light on the specifications of the device. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 865 SoC clubbed with up to 12GB of RAM and has up to 256GB of onboard storage. We should point out that these storage configurations can be found in the 5G variant of the smartphone only. The device comes with Adreno 650 GPU and has UFS 3.1 storage memory. It runs on Android 10 and houses a 4,450mAh battery. The mobile device has a quad-camera setup on its back panel that has a 48MP primary sensor, a 13MP telephoto sensor, a 13MP wide-angle lens and a 2MP portrait camera. For selfies and video calls, there is a 16MP camera on the front panel of the device.

Since the smartphone is aimed at gamers, it comes with Game Space that gives the user information like GPU clock speed and temperature of the device. It also has a dedicated Ultra Gaming Mode, and has Carbon Fiber VC Liquid Cooling to keep the temperature of the smartphone in check.

And since we are talking about the software features of the smartphone, we should also mention its downside, which is bloatware. There are a number of apps pre-installed on the device including Amazon, Flipkart, Facebook, WPS Office, Daily Hunt and more. Luckily most can be uninstalled.

The performance of IQOO 3 5G was simply superb. The smartphone was extremely fast in performing most tasks and our experience with it was extremely smooth.  We multi-tasked a lot on the device and did not experience lag even once. But then, with specifications like that of IQOO 3 5G,  lag was not even expected.

Gaming on the handset was a great experience in itself. We played a number of games on the smartphone and they all ran extremely smoothly. Even the graphic hungry games like PUBG Mobile and Asphalt 9: Legends ran very smoothly. As we mentioned earlier, IQOO 3 5G comes with a number of features that are dedicated for gaming. These obviously enhance the gaming experience on the smartphone. If we talk about Game Space, it gives users all the vital information that is required for gaming. Ultra Gaming Mode, on the other hand, has options like turning off notifications, and disabling automatic Wi-Fi connection. Using it will ensure uninterrupted gaming for users.

Coming to the 4,450mAh battery of the device, it did a decent job during our time with the device. With moderate usage, it lasted us an entire day. If your usage is heavy, expect a few hours lesser than that. Another thing worth mentioning is that the smartphone takes around 45 minutes to charge completely, which we think is excellent.

The fingerprint scanner as well as the face unlock feature of the smartphone did a good job at all times. There wasn’t a single time that we faced a problem in unlocking the device.

Now, let’s talk about the cameras of IQOO 3 5G. If we look at the performance of the 48MP primary camera, it worked very well in areas that had ample light.

IQOO 3 5G image sample

The colours were accurate and the images were extremely clear and sharp. In dimly lit conditions the quality of the images fell down. Unless we had the flash on, the pictures taken didn’t turn out to be very good, even with the Night Mode on.

IQOO 3 5G image sample
Image taken with Night Mode on

The 13MP ultra-wide angle does include a lot more surface area and it managed to do a good job only in well-lit conditions. The zoomed in shots we took also at times lacked clarity. The portrait shots were mostly good.

Coming to the 16MP selfie camera of the device, we are far more impressed with that. The selfies that we took using the device were always of good quality.

Verdict

There are a number of good things about the IQOO 3 5G that make it a worthy buy. It has a sturdy built and a beautiful design, comes with a vibrant display and its performance is extremely smooth. The gaming performance was simply excellent and the biometric locks were good too. However, the cameras of the smartphone could be more consistent and the battery life could be better, as we have seen in most phone from Vivo in the past. But then, we won’t count the battery as a downside as the device can charge from 0 to 100% in 45 minutes. So, most aspects of IQOO 3 5G smartphone are good and hence, we consider it to be a good buy.

Pros

  • Beautiful design
  • Vibrant display
  • Excellent gaming

Cons

  • Cameras could be better
  • Battery could last longer

Vivo V19 with dual punch hole confirmed to launch in India on March 26

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Vivo has finally announced the launch date of Vivo V19. The device is now scheduled to launch in India on March 26. The smartphone is the redesigned variant of the model which was launched in Indonesia earlier this month. The Indian variant will come with slight changes as per a report.

To officially announce the launch date of Vivo V19 in India the company took to Twitter. The company revealed that the smartphone will arrive in India on March 26. Alongside this, Vivo also shared a teaser image that confirmed that the Indian variant of Vivo V19 will be different from the Indonesian variant. The shared image displayed the silhouette of the upcoming handset which reveals that it will feature a dual punch hole instead of a single hole punch to house a selfie camera.

But, even before the official announcement could be made, an online leak already confirmed that the phone will be powered by Snapdragon 712 along with 8GB of RAM instead of  Snapdragon 675 chipset besides the front camera set up.

According to a report, the Indian model of Vivo V19 will come with a 6.44-inch FHD+ Dual iView E3 Super AMOLED display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 409ppi. Under the hood, there will be a 2.3GHz octa-core Snapdragon 712 SoC paired with 8GB of RAM along with two storage options 128GB and 256GB. It is likely to go with an all-glass body and will be available in two colour finishes Mystic Silver and Piano Black. In addition to this, the display is supposed to support an in-display fingerprint sensor and will run on Android 10-based FunTouch OS 10.

In terms of cameras, Vivo V19 is suggested to feature four cameras stacked vertically inside an L shaped camera module similar to the Galaxy S20 series. The setup will consist of a  48MP primary sensor, an 8MP super wide-angle lens, a 2MP macro lens and a 2MP depth sensor. The Indian variant will come with a dual selfie camera on the front display housed inside a dual punch hole on the right corner. The front camera set up is said to include a 32MP main sensor and an 8MP wide-angle lens. Besides this, it is expected to come with a 4,500mAh battery with a 33W Vivo Flash Charge 2.0 support instead of an 18W fast charger which is provided with the Indonesian model.

In terms of connectivity, it will include Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, 4G and Type-C port. The device is expected to measure 159.64×75.04×8.5mm and weigh 186.5 grams.

These changes will ultimately increase the pricing of the Indian model, which in Indonesian currency comes at IDR 4,299,000 that translates to Rs 22,100 for the base variant whereas the 256Gb storage costs IDR 4,999,000 which translates to Rs 25,700 as per Indian currency.

YouTube is relying more on Machine Learning and less on humans amid Coronavirus outbreak

2

As the world is grappling with the Coronavirus pandemic, businesses across the globe are doing its best to protect their workforce. Following the trend, YouTube will temporarily start relying more on machine learning to help with some of the work normally done by reviewers.

This means that YouTube will be seeking help of automated systems in removing content that violates its norms without human review so that it has workplace protections in place.

“We have teams at YouTube, as well as partner companies, that help us support and protect the YouTube community—from people who respond to user and creator questions, to reviewers who evaluate videos for possible policy violations. These teams and companies are staffed by thousands of people dedicated to helping users and creators.
