Nokia 7.1 to get Android 9.0 Pie update next month: Report

HMD Global recently unveiled its Nokia 7.1 smartphone at an event in London. Although the smartphone runs Android 8.1 Oreo, it announced at the event that the mobile phone will soon be getting an upgrade for Android 9.0 Pie. And it seems like the company is keeping its promise. Just two weeks after Nokia 7.1 got launched, the smartphone has reportedly appeared on Geekbench with Android 9.0 Pie. The report further said that this means that that the company will be rolling out the latest Android version’s update to the smartphone next month, as it was initially scheduled. To recall, Nokia 7.1 sports a 5.84-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display and comes with PureDisplay screen technology. The smartphone is powered by 1.8GHz Snapdragon 636 processor clubbed with 3GB/4GB RAM and 32GB/64GB of onboard storage. Nokia 7.1 comes with 12MP+5MP dual rear cameras that come with Zeiss-branded lenses. It also has an 8MP selfie camera on its front panel. The smartphone houses a 3,060mAh battery and is ARCore certified. It is worth noticing that all Nokia smartphones that we have seen getting launched recently are a part of Android One program, and we consider this to be a big plus for any smartphone. Being a part of Android One program, the smartphone receives timely security patches for three years from the date of launch, And regular Android updates for two years. The company also plans to roll the latest Android version update to Nokia 6.1, Nokia 6.1 Plus, Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco. While Nokia 6 and Nokia 6.1 are scheduled to get an update this month, Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco users will have to wait till next month. HMD Global has also said that it plans to roll out the Android 9 Pie updates to Nokia smartphones other than the ones it mentioned. The company recently also launched the Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone in India. Although Nokia 3.1 Plus (first impressions) runs with Android 8.1 Oreo, it also falls under Google’s Android One program, much like other Nokia smartphones. So although it has not been announced, it is very likely that we will see the smartphone getting the Android 9.0 Pie update too. And it this turns out to be true, then Nokia 3.1 Plus will be one among the first budget smartphones in the country to get the Android Pie update. Image courtesy: GSMArena

Why customers are not happy with Flipkart, Amazon’s festive season sales

0
The festive season sales of Amazon and Flipkart have become a time that shoppers look forward to. Every year, Amazon and Flipkart hold this sale before the festive season begins. Like every year, technology companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, Nokia, Honor, Asus, etc announced discounts on their products. Shoppers generally consider these festive season sales on Flipkart and Amazon a good to time to get the products they want at a reduced price. However, not all customers are happy with what they got. We came across a few tweets on Twitter in which buyers have complained about counterfeit products or products they ordered for being delivered to them followed by bad customer service by both Flipkart and Amazon. A Twitter user che guevara has claimed that his friend bought a new pair of Apple Airpods during the recently held Big Billion Days sale, only to get fake ones instead. https://twitter.com/cheguwera/status/1052101604609019904?s=19 The tweet further explains that when the customer tried to contact Flipkart in order to either exchange or return the counterfeit product, the e-commerce giant did not address the issue. Instead Flipkart said that it cannot help because the product was bought during the festive season sale. The tweet also carries pictures of the allegedly ‘fake Apple Airpods’, and till now, it has been retweeted over 1,200 times. A number of other users have recounted their similar experiences on the Twitter thread, where most of them have spoken about buying a product from Flipkart only to find out that the product is fake. Another thing common between these experiences is the fact that none of them were happy with Flipkart’s customer service. Most of them were supposedly told by the company to contact the seller they bought the product from. It is worth noticing that Flipkart Support has also replied to the che guevara’s tweet saying that “they are working on it to get it sorted.” However, this is not the only customer complaining against Flipkart after Big Billion Days sale. Another Twitter user, Srikanth, claims that he got a defective product delivered to him. When he contacted Flipkart, he was told by the customer care executive that the only solution is to get the money refunded and buy the product again. However, since Big Billion Days sale is over, the product is now available at a higher price. A different complaint on Twitter says that the user ordered Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, but instead got a smartphone from Oppo. To make things worse, it seems like Amazon isn’t far behind too. A Twitter user Amit Arora, claims that a small plastic fan was delivered to him, when actually he had placed an order for the 256GB storage variant of iPhone X. He further explained that he had raised the complaint multiple times, but Amazon India was not addressing it. Arora also said that he has approached Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Consumer Court regarding the same. Amazon has replied to the user on Twitter urging him to send them his details via a link they provided. Another user on Twitter with the name of Prathamesh Bovlekar, said that Amazon’s delivery boy came with one item instead of two for which he had placed the order. However, he was demanding Bovlekar to pay for both the items. When Bovlekar did not agree to this, his order was rejected. A customer care executive then told him to place his order again, but now that the Great Indian Festival is over, the prices have risen again. Well, we can only hope that these customers do get the required support from the respective companies. While Amazon’s Great Indian Festival kicked off on October 10 and carried on till October 15, Flipkart’s Big Billion Days sale started on October 10 and went on till October 14.

Tesla, CEO Elon Musk’s settlement with SEC gets a nod from US Judge

0
The settlement between a federal regulator, Tesla and its CEO, Elon Musk has been approved by a US Judge. With this, a difficult period for Tesla’s investors has come to an end which started after Elon Musk tweeted that he has secured an investment to take the company private. Post the announcement, Tesla’s shares rose around 5.5% to $273.88 but then fell to $271.63 on Nasdaq, according to Reuters. However, even then, stocks are still 20% less than what they were prior to August 6. It was on August 6 that Elon Musk took to Twitter and said that he will be taking the company private. And now, the motion filed by the US Securities and Exchange Commission which highlights the agreement with Tesla and Elon Musk has been approved by Judge Alison Nathan of the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. A Tesla spokesperson confirmed the settlement, but did not comment any further on the matter. According to the agreement, Musk has to a fine of $20 million and step down as the chairman for the next three years. He agreed to this to settle the charges that has to the potential to make him leave Tesla. Even though the company has not been charged with fraud, it will be paying a fine of $20 million too. Tesla also must appoint an independent chairman, two independent directors and a board committee that will control Elon Musk’s communications. Including his Twitter account. It was last month that Musk got accused of fraud for his “false and misleading” tweets in August by the US Securities and Exchange Commission. Earlier this month on October 4, when Musk and SEC were asked by Judge Nathan to explain why their settlement was just, Musk took to Twitter to mock the SEC. His tweet read, “Just want to that the Shortseller Enrichment Commission is doing incredible work. And the name change is so on point!” Just a day after Musk’s tweet was posted, billionaire investor David Einhorn’s Greenlight Capital hedge fund criticized Tesla and said that Musk had been deceptive. He further said that Tesla’s situation was similar to Lehman Brothers right before the company collapsed. This led to a fall in the electric carmaker’s shares by 7%. Tesla now has time till November 13 to appoint a new Chairman and according to a report in The Financial Times, Twenty-First Century Fox Inc CEO James Murdoch is a lead candidate for the role. However, Musk has said that the report is incorrect.

This Android smartphone is more expensive than the iPhone XS Max

0
It seems like Huawei doesn’t want to launch a flagship without collaborating with Porsche for a limited edition smartphone. The company yesterday launched its flagship smartphones Huawei Mate 20, Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Huawei Mate 20X at an event in London. The fourth smartphone that it launched was Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design. It comes with same set of specifications as Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but has an upgraded design. While the entire front panel is occupied by the display of the smartphone, the back panel sports all the aesthetic differences. When you flip over the device to see its back panel, you will see a glass stripe races down the length of the smartphone with soft leather on both the sides. There are two colour options available if you wish to buy the Huawei Mate 20 Porsche Design. One is Black on Black variant and the other is a limited edition Red on Black model. It is worth noticing that the Red on Black model will only be available in China. Another difference in the handset is its RAM and storage. While Huawei Mate 20 Pro mobile comes with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage onboard, Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design has an 8MP RAM clubbed with 256GB internal storage or a massive 512GB of inbuilt storage. However, you’ll have to pay a lot if you indeed are smitten enough by the design of the Android device to buy it. The 6GB RAM variant is priced at €1,695, and the 8GB RAM model can be picked up at €2,095. It is worth noticing that in Europe, the price of the 512GB storage version of iPhone XS Max starts at €1,649, which means that Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design exceeds it price by €50. Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design features a 6.39-inch QHD+ curved OLED display, and has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The smartphone sports an indisplay fingerprint sensor and has IP68 rating, making it is water and dust resistant. The leather clad smartphone sports a triple rear camera setup with 40MP+20MP+8MP sensors. The rear cameras come with LED flash and Super HDR. For selfies and video calls, the front panel of the smartphone houses a 24MP RGB camera that comes with 3D facial unlock and 3D live emoji with GIF and MP4 files. Huawei Mate 20 RS Porsche Design houses a 4,200mAh battery.

This is when Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is getting launched

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 smartphone is all set to be launched at an event in China that is scheduled for October 25. Xiaomi has made it official that the third generation of its Mi Mix flagship range will be unveiled this month. Much like other smartphones in the Mi Mix series, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will also feature a bezel-less design and come with high-end specifications. It is worth noticing that a teaser which leaked earlier this month revealed that Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 smartphone will be launched at Nanjing Sports Centre. The development regarding the launch of Mi Mix 3 has been confirmed on Xiaomi’s official Weibo account and also by Donovan Sung, the company’s official spokesperson, on Twitter. A number of speculations and rumours about the upcoming device have surfaced online since the last few weeks. It is expected that the smartphone will come with 5G capabilities because it sports a 5G+ logo on the status bar. Xiaomi’s President Lin Bin also teased a camera slider. But rather than the one we saw on Oppo Find X, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 mobile is likely to sport a camera slider similar to Honor Magic 2. Reports also suggest that Xiaomi Mi Mix 3’s camera slider could come with both front and rear cameras. This is because the company has teased a nearly bezel-less display that comes without a notch, much like Vivo Nex. Xiaomi has also teased on Weibo two features of the upcoming smartphone. In the picture shared by Xiaomi, two cards are place together and one says 5G, while the other says 10G. The same image has also been shared on Sung on his Twitter handle. The ‘5G’ obviously means that Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will come with 5G capabilities, and the 10G points towards the presence of 10GB RAM on the device. What makes us even more sure is the fact that Sung said in his tweet, “5G speeds, 10GB RAM, 8 days left.” If this turns out to be true, then Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will be one among the first smartphones ever to arrive with that much memory. However, 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM variants of the smartphone are also expected. While the 6GB RAM model will come with either 64GB or 128GB inbuilt storage, the 8GB RAM variant is expected to have either 128GB or 256GB storage onboard. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will reportedly sport a Samsung QHD+ AMOLED display and will be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor. The upcoming Android smartphone is expected to feature a 20MP selfie camera. For more details, we will have to wait till October 25, but we’ll keep you updated as more information about the device surfaces.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen dies at 65

0
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen died due to complications of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma today. He was 65 and had confirmed earlier this month that he was undergoing treatment for the disease. Paul Allen was Bill Gates’ friend since childhood and started Microsoft with him in 1975. In 1983, he left the company while he was being treated for Hodgkin’s lymphoma, but he stayed on the company’s board through 2000. He was treated for the condition in 2009, but later the disease relapsed. Gates have given a statement to ABC News saying that he is “heartbroken by the passing of one of my oldest and dearest friends.” He further went on to say that, “From our early days together at Lakeside School, through our partnership in the creation of Microsoft, to some of our joint philanthropic projects over the years, Paul was a true partner and dear friend. Personal computing would not have existed without him. But Paul wasn’t content with starting one company. He channelled his intellect and compassion into a second act focused on improving people’s lives and strengthening communities in Seattle and around the world. He was fond of saying, ‘If it has the potential to do good, then we should do it.’ That’s the kind of person he was. Paul loved life and those around him, and we all cherished him in return. He deserved much more time, but his contributions to the world of technology and philanthropy will live on for generations to come. I will miss him tremendously.” Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella also spoke about Allen saying that his contribution to Microsoft and to the industry was ‘indispensable.’ He said in a statement that, “Paul Allen’s contributions to our company, our industry, and to our community are indispensable. As co-founder of Microsoft, in his own quiet and persistent way, he created magical products, experiences and institutions, and in doing so, he changed the world. I have learned so much from him — his inquisitiveness, curiosity, and push for high standards is something that will continue to inspire me and all of us as Microsoft. Our hearts are with Paul’s family and loved ones. Rest in peace.” In 2011, a memoir was published in which Allen revealed that he was the mind behind naming Microsoft and it was him who created the two-button mouse. According to the book, Allen was under-credited for the work he did at Microsoft and Bill Gates took more ownership of the technology giant than he deserved. Although the book initially did create some stir, two years later, Gates and Allen posed for a photo together and confirmed that they were still friends. After Allen left Microsoft, he became an investor through his company Vulcan and started putting his money in a number of companies. A lot of Allen’s work was focused in Seattle, where he became a big name because of his investments and donations. CEOs of other technology companies including Apple, Google and Amazon spoke about Allen on Twitter after the news of his demise came in. While Apple CEO Tim Cook and Google CEO Sundar Pichai talked about his philanthropic work, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said that his work inspired many. WhatsApp is updating its ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature

WhatsApp has modified its ‘Delete for Everyone’ feature that was launched last year. The rather useful WhatsApp feature enables users to retract messages that they may have sent inadvertently. When the feature was launched, users could recall the messages within seven minutes of sending. However, later on, the limit got increased to 1 hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds. And now, the Facebook owned messaging app has plans to change the feature even more in order to enhance the user experience of the app. The Twitter account that keeps a track of changes made in WhatsApp Beta, WABetaInfo, WhatsApp will soon be getting a ‘Recipient limit.’ Once the update comes to WhatsApp, if you delete a message for everyone, the message may not get recalled if the revoke request doesn’t reach the recipient within 13 hours, 8 minutes and 16 seconds (maybe because the phone was off). Basically, even if you delete the message within the time limit that has been given by the company, but the revoke request somehow doesn’t reach the recipient, your message will not be deleted. It is worth noticing the new additions work in the background and users don’t have to do anything extra to make sure the revoke request is sent. The new modification to the feature has been added to prevent manipulation. WABetaInfo’s Twitter handle further says that the feature has been added as ‘a protection against modded users that revoked messages sent weeks, months and years ago.’ Don’t confuse the time limit of revoke request being sent to recipient with the time limit of being allowed to delete messages. A sent message can still be recalled for only up to 1 hour 8 minutes and 16 seconds, while the time limit for revoke request reaching the recipient is 13 hours, 8 minutes and 16 seconds. The update in WhatsApp’s Delete for Everyone feature is expected to come to the popular instant messaging app in a few days along with the stickers update. Just days before tweeting about the ‘Recipient limit’ update, WABetaInfo’s Twitter handle has revealed that stickers will be coming to WhatsApp in its Android 2.18.307 version.

Nokia 3.1 Plus first impressions

This week saw a big yet affordable upgrade come to HMD Global’s Nokia lineup. The company launched its Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone in India, which is the successor to Nokia 3.1 that was unveiled in July. To recall, although Nokia 3.1 was a value for money device, it did lack some key features. For instance, the smartphone did not come with a fingerprint sensor. But we don’t have a reason to complain anymore, because Nokia 3.1 Plus does address the complaints users had with its predecessor. The smartphone features a bigger screen than Nokia 3.1, comes with a fingerprint scanner on its back panel and even has a bumped up MediaTek HelioP22 processor and a 3,500mAh battery. But that’s still not the best thing that the company has added to the new smartphone. Nokia 3.1 Plus sports a dual rear camera that enables it offer portrait mode effects. And like all other Nokia smartphones that have been launched recently, the mobile phone comes under the Android One program, which gives it an edge over others because it will get timely Android updates for two years and security patches for three years. The smartphone costs Rs 11,499, and at this price it competes with the likes of Moto G6 (review), Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 (review). We spent some time with the Nokia 3.1 Plus and here are our first impressions of the device. Nokia 3.1 Plus design   We really liked the design of Nokia 3.1 Plus. The smartphone has a sturdy built and it feels solid to hold. And it was certainly refreshing to use a smartphone that has matte finish as it means no fingerprint smudges. The back panel of Nokia 3.1 Plus houses the dual rear cameras, LED flash and the fingerprint scanner. The volume rocker and power buttons are sandwiched on the right edge and the SIM card and microSD card slots are on the left edge. The top and bottom edges house the 3.5mm jack, USB port and speaker grilles. Flip the phone over and you’ll see the 6-inch screen of the smartphone with Nokia branding, earpiece and selfie camera on top. Overall, we really liked the design of Nokia 3.1 Plus. It definitely is one among the better looking phones in the budget segment and its matte finish makes it stand out. Nokia 3.1 Plus display Nokia 3.1 Plus smartphone sports a 6-inch HD+ IPS display that has an aspect ratio of 18:9. One thing that we found to be a differentiator is the fact that Nokia 3.1 Plus does not sport a notch on its display, something that is not very common anymore. Coming back to the display, it showcased bright and vibrant colours and had good viewing angles. The colour reproduction is accurate and the images projected are sharp and clear. In our limited time with the phone, the only downside to the display that we observed was its sunlight readability. That certainly could have been better. But you’ll have to wait for our review till we give you our complete opinion on it. Nokia 3.1 Plus cameras Nokia 3.1 Plus sports dual rear cameras with a 13MP sensor that comes with an f2.0 aperture and a 5MP sensor that has an f2.4 aperture. The front panel of the smartphone houses an 8MP camera with f2.2 aperture. Bokeh feature is present on the dual rear cameras as well as on the selfie camera of Nokia 3.1 Plus. It is worth noticing that the dual rear cameras have the Live Bokeh mode, which basically enable the user to adjust the depth in Bokeh mode before he clicks a picture. However, the same cannot be done while clicking selfies. Time-lapse and slow motion videos can also be recorded using Nokia 3.1 Plus. We took a few shots using the smartphone and we were impressed by the colour reproduction and the details that the cameras captured. However, our opinion as of now is limited to shots taken in brightly lit areas. You would have to wait for our full review to know about the low-light shots. One aspect of the smartphone that truly disappointed us was the selfie camera. If you are selfie fan, you may not be too happy with the results you’ll get from Nokia 3.1 Plus’ front facing snapper. We tried to take a number of shots, but the selfies we took were just not up to the mark as compared to other smartphones in this price segment. But then, we will use it for a little longer before we jump to any conclusions about it. What we think In the limited time that we got with the Nokia 3.1 Plus, we loved its design and even found our experience with the display to be good. The cameras did leave us with mixed feelings, but as we said, it would be too soon for us to jump to any conclusion. The smartphone does have its own set of positive points and because it comes under the Android One program, it may be one among the first budget phones in the country to get an Android Pie update. Till now, Nokia 3.1 Plus seems to be a promising budget smartphone, but we will use it for a few more days and come back to talk about its performance and battery life.
