Google discovered and removed more than 500 malicious Chrome extension

0
The popular search engine Google has discarded more than 500 malicious Chrome extensions from its conclusive Web Store after a long investigation conducted by Cisco’s Duo Security, Jamila, and Google.  Jamila Kaya a security researcher found out a large scale campaign of copycat Chrome extensions that infected users and extract data through malvertising while attempting to avoid fraud detection on the Google Chrome Web Store. More than 500 malicious Chrome extensions have been detected and been removed by Google. Jamila used a CRXcavator that can analyse Chrome extensions as well as helped her in discovering a network of copycat plugins sharing nearly identical functionality. After identifying a few dozens of extensions she reported to Google. Then Google and Jamila together searched the entire Chrome Web Store corpus to find out and remove more than 500 related extensions. A Google spokesperson said, “We appreciate the work of the research community, and when we are alerted of extensions in the Web Store that violate our policies, we take action and use those incidents as training material to improve our automated and manual analyses. We do regular sweeps to find extensions using similar techniques, code, and behaviors, and take down those extensions if they violate our policies.” As per a report published by Duo, these extensions used generic names to mask their true identity to have access to user’s private browsing data. This is done by showing a malicious advertisement to bypass the Google Chrome Web Store’s fraud detection system. Jamila discovered a few dozens of extension which were found to be matched across 1.7 million users. This means that more than 1.7 million users were affected therefore points out that the Malvertising attack was on a large scale.  “Increasingly malicious actors will use legitimate internet activity to obfuscate their exploit droppers or command and control schemas. A very popular way to do this is to utilize advertising cookies and the redirects therein to control callbacks and evade detection. This technique, called “malvertising” has become an increasingly common infection vector in Jamila’s experience, and is still hard to detect today, despite being prominent for years,” the report explained. Jamila recommends that users should regularly audit what extensions they have installed, remove those they no longer use and report ones they do not recognize these simple steps will keep you safe. Our Take

All the three newly launched phones come with quad-camera set up with 108-megapixel Samsung’s ISOCELL Bright HMX sensor. But The Pro variant of the Xiaomi Mi 10 comes with a better camera set up as compared to both the other two smartphones which are its biggest USP. But in the front camera department, Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra takes on both Xiaomi’s phones as it comes equipped with a 40-megapixel front camera whereas the Mi 10 phones have a 20-megapixel selfie camera. Samsung phones offer a longer battery life as it comes with a 5000mAh battery that is supported by a 45W fast charging. In the hardware department, all three devices are powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC which is till date the latest processor. It is very hard to decide which amongst the three mobile phones is the best. But if you are on a tight budget then you need to wait for a few more weeks until Xiaomi launched Mi 10 Pro because it might cost you half the price of what you have to pay for Galaxy S20 Ultra.  For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. The new Amazon Echo (2019) review: Comes with many improvements

The smart speaker segment is completely dominated by just Google and Amazon. The two technology giants keep on launching new and improved devices to compete with one another. The latest to come into play is Amazon Echo (2019). We spent a few days with the smart speaker and here’s what we think of it:

Amazon Echo (2019) design

Let’s begin by talking about the look and feel of the Amazon Echo (2019). The smart speaker by Amazon is cylindrical in shape, which basically means that its sound output is not unidirectional. Instead, the speaker can distribute sound in all directions uniformly. It is worth mentioning that there is a wraparound mesh-casing on the speaker. On the top, there is a ring that lights up each time the word “Alexa” is said. Other than that, there are four buttons on the top — two to control the volume, one to summon Alexa and the last is the mute button. Users can make use of the mute button on Amazon Echo (2019) to stop the digital assistant from listening to their commands. This is surely a good thing from privacy point of view, especially for people who wish to use the device in living room or bedroom. The speaker also has a power port and it has support for an AUX cable, too. Amazon Echo (2019) The Amazon Echo (2019) is available in Charcoal, Heather, Sandstone and Twilight Blue colour options. The one that we got for review was dressed in Charcoal Black. We should mention that unlike the Echo Plus, Amazon Echo (2019) does not have Zigbee interface, which basically means that there’s no support for smart home devices. But then, smart home devices are yet to gain too much popularity so there will be very few who will be affected by the lack of this feature. To sum it up, we would say that we liked the design of the smart speaker. It is compact and one can put it literally anywhere. Whether you plan to use it in your living room, kitchen or bedroom, the Amazon Echo (2019) will look chic sitting anywhere.

Amazon Echo (2019) performance

When we speak about the performance of Amazon Echo (2019), the first thing that we should talk about is its digital assistant Alexa. The smart assistant can be used a lot like Google Assistant or Siri on our smartphones. You can ask it to answer your day-to-day queries like what the weather is like or how long will it take for you to commute from your home to office. You can also ask it to play particular kind of songs like Dance, Bollywood and more. It will immediately start a playlist of the genre that has been curated in the music services it has support for. Users can also set alarms and reminders and create shopping lists using Alexa. Having the ability to do all this makes Alexa a great personal assistant plus source for basic information. Amazon Echo (2019) 2 Users can also create Routines via the Alexa app. With the Routines feature, you can pre-set the action you want Alexa to take when you speak a particular command. The digital assistant at times will also direct you to a certain Skill in order to complete a task. While we were happy with Alexa’s performance most of the times, we should point out that there were times when it apologized for not being able to complete a particular command. However, it didn’t happen too many times, so one can completely overlook it too. Amazon Echo (2019) 4 Coming to the sound quality of the Amazon Echo, it was pretty decent. According to Amazon, the device comes with neodymium drivers, 3-inch woofer and enhanced back volume which makes the bass feel stronger. We tried listening to various genres of music on Amazon Echo (2019) at different volume levels. While the sound output remained consistent across genres, we should point out that even the maximum volume of the speaker may not be high enough for some. We have used a number of Bluetooth speakers that can play music at high volumes, however Amazon Echo (2019)’s is not  the loudest of the lot.

Verdict

At a cost of Rs 9,999, the Amazon Echo (2019) is a decent buy. It has its share of pros and cons. The pros of Amazon Echo include its design and improvements in its digital assistant Alexa. While the sound quality of the speaker is also good, the fact that it could not play on very high volume was a downer. Also, you may have to sign up for a lot of services to make the most out of Amazon’s smart speaker, as the company’s ecosystem in India is limited as compared to Google’s. Pros
  • Good design
  • Improvements in Alexa
  • Mute button
Cons
  • Cannot play music at very high volume

Breaking: Mobile World Congress cancelled confirms GSMA

GSMA has announced the cancellations of the 2020 Mobile World Congress. The reason behind the cancellation of the biggest trade show is the fear of the possibility of getting infected by the novel coronavirus.  The GSM Association organiser of the Mobile World Congress has been hosting the biggest trade show in the mobile device world since 2006. Like every year the MWC 2020 was to be held in Barcelona Spain from February 24 to February 27. Now due to the outbreak of Coronavirus, the Association has decided to cancel the trade show as there have already been two cases of coronavirus in Spain.  GSMA statement on MWC 2020, “With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.” It further added, “The Host City Parties respect and understand this decision. The GSMA and the Host City Parties will continue to be working in unison and supporting each other for MWC Barcelona 2021 and future editions. Our sympathies at this time are with those affected in China, and all around the world.” Even before the GSMA’s cancellation of MWC on February 12 many companies that were earlier taking part in the biggest trade show have recently withdrawn from Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2020 with the outbreak of deadly Coronavirus in China and other parts of the world. Companies such as Amazon, AT&T,  Cisco, Amdocs, BT, Ericsson, Facebook, Intel, Deutsche Telekom, HMD Global, MediaTek, Nvidia, McAfee, Nokia, LG, Orange, NTT Docomo, Sony, Vodafone, Sprint, Western Digital, Rakuten, Royole and Vivo have withdrawn their names from the event. More than 30 companies pulled off from exhibiting as well as participating at the show prior to the Association’s announcement. Companies such as TCL and ZTE even cancelled their press conference but assured that they would still have their booths at the tech show.  Despite  AT&T and Nokia’s announcement over their withdrawal from the MWC the GSMA persisted that the show would go on as in Barcelona as planned. While it affirmed that it will follow measures recommended by WHO and will also provide additional medical support and sanitising products across the venue. The death toll from the coronavirus is on a rise. Earlier this week big companies such as Amazon and Vivo also pulled off from participating at MWC 2020. Amazon issued a statement, “Due to the outbreak and continued concerns about the new coronavirus, the company has decided to withdraw from exhibiting and participating in the Mobile World Congress 2020 event.” Vivo said, “Vivo has been closely monitoring the Novel Coronavirus Pneumonia (NCP) outbreak and continuously evaluating planned activities. The health and safety of our employees and the public are our top priority. Based on the present situation, we have decided to withdraw from our debut at MWC 2020 and other related events later this month in Barcelona, Spain. We will soon introduce the APEX 2020 concept phone which we had originally planned to showcase at MWC. We will share more updates in due course. We apologize for any inconvenience caused and would like to thank our partners, media friends and consumers for their understanding.” For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV review: A good smart option at affordable price

0
Onida was a household brand in the late ’80s and most of the ’90s. However, with the emergence of television from makers such as Samsung and LG, the homegrown brand has always been on the back foot ever since. Now the game has changed as Onida has partnered with Amazon and brought Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV to the India market. This is the first of its type from the Indian company, which is trying to make a comeback in the already thick TV market. We got our hands on the Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch and this is our review of the new smart TV.

Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV Design and Display

Upfront the Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV looks like any other flatscreen in the market. Black plastic bezels hold the 32-inch LED flat tube. The front also has the Onida branding at the bottom. The box contains the table feet as well as the wall mount. Setting it up is easy and with the supplied screws as well as an easy to understand user guide, you can set it up in no time. The TV set weighs 4.5 Kg, which is not heavy at all to work with. Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV has twin down-firing speakers, which have 16W RMS output. The rear is also made up of plastic that has a lot happening on it. The right bottom has the single-use joystick button that can be used to change channels and also volume. The rear has two ports placements. One is on the side that holds 3 HDMI, 1 USB and a 3.5mm headphone port. The bottom has a down-facing port panel that has Ethernet, Antenna, composite and a power port. Both are accessible easily since the TV is light to manoeuvre. The Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV comes with a minimalistic remote that has all the essential buttons as well as quick buttons for Amazon Prime, Netflix etc. It also has a MIC on it since the TV is a smart one. One can just talk to Alexa and find their latest OTT programs with a push of a button. 2 triple ‘A’ cells power the remote and those also come in the box.

Performance

Let’s get this out of the way, the Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV is not FHD TV it is just HD, which means it can only display graphics up to 720P resolution. Which kind of is a deal-breaker for many, however, we would want to stress on the point that the colours and sharpness along with the swift FireTV OS make up for it. Talking about which, the Fire TV OS setup takes about 10 minutes to complete and once done you are set to watch all your favourite shows. The boot time is slightly high, however since it just has 1GB RAM inside, 20-25 seconds for the TV to start is not bad. The TV opens directly in the FireTV OS system and you get all the apps such as Amazon Prime, Netflix, Zee5, Alt Balaji, Hotstar etc right from the get go. YouTube is also there and one can download more apps if the need be. There is 4GB storage inside, so that can hold some extra apps. For video and picture playback, you would need to connect them using the USB drive. All popular formats such as JPEG, MP4, MP3 are supported from the USB drive. We played a lot of YouTube videos as well as Netflix programs on the TV and we found the experience to be very decent. Since this TV is made for small to mid-size rooms, the sound drivers do good. In rooms bigger than 20×15 feet you might want to buy additional speakers. Another great aspect of the TV is Alexa integration and it works almost flawlessly. It recognised our accent 10 out of 10 times and 9 out 10 times displayed the correct results. All the Alexa skills come into the Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV as well and one can make use of them just like any other Alexa device.

Verdict

At Rs 13,999 Onida has got itself a contender in the segment. We would have loved it if the Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV was Full HD and not just HD. However, good crisp colours and deep blacks do make up for it. The TV is being built near Mumbai and Onida assures good after-sales for the product. The Fire TV OS makes you feel at home and one can easily navigate through. If you are looking for a smart TV in a budget and do not mind the common looks, the Onida Fire TV Edition 32-inch TV is a very good option.
