Microsoft launches ‘Teams for Education’ features to support new remote and hybrid learning formats

0

With an aim to engage and prepare students and teachers for new remote and hybrid learning formats in the upcoming school year, Microsoft has now launched ‘Teams for Education’ that include expanded audience view of up to 49 participants, custom backgrounds, class insights, and virtual breakout rooms, among other new features.

After carrying out a survey with nearly 500 members of the Microsoft Education community, comprising teachers and institutional leaders from around the world, Microsoft discovered that there has been a strong uptake in the use of remote learning tools. Around 61 percent expect to begin the next school year in a hybrid learning environment—a mix of remote and in-person learning—and 87 percent said they expect to use technology more in physical classrooms.

“It’s more important than ever to help educators find ways to connect with students and keep them engaged, motivated, and safe in a digital world. It is inspiring to see how technology is helping educators and students maintain learning continuity,” said Manish Prakash, Country General Manager-Public Sector, Health and Education, Microsoft India.

Microsoft academic solutions is enabling learning and continuity schools in India. The British School in New Delhi moved to Microsoft Teams to enable its teachers and students interact and collaborate in remote learning scenarios. Others such as The Ardee School in New Friends Colony (NFC) had started with remote learning via Teams even before the schools were shut due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Moving to Teams has provided teachers new tools to engage with their students remotely. While some teachers are using Kahoot quizzes at the end of their classes, others are encouraging students to create and share content using Sway, Buncee, and Paint 3D. To replicate the test environment, teachers are also sharing Microsoft Forms on Teams, which they need to fill and send back.

In order to create compelling, engaging, and inclusive content to ensure strong student engagement under new remote learning formats, educators are turning to a central hub of digital tools for remote learning across different activities while maintaining secure learning environments.

The new ‘Teams for Education’ features are aimed at increasing student participation and give educators’ new methods to keep students digitally engaged.

  1. Accommodate 49 participants at once on a single screen: Teams will be expanding its grid view to 7×7, accommodating up to 49 participants to boost student engagement, as well as social and emotional connection. Previews will be available later this month and available more widely later in the year.
  2. Virtual breakout rooms: Educators will be able to create virtual breakout sessions for students to meet and collaborate in small groups closer to the end of the year.
  3. Enhancing student participation: In ‘Teams for Education’, students can digitally Raise Their Hands during class meetings. Educators can also see Attendance Reports and, later in the year, view Class Insights, an intelligent data analytics breakdown on student engagement in class, rate of assignments turned in, activity metrics and grades, with a new trends view.
  4. Meeting Lobby: Maintaining student security and control over the classroom experience is critical. New meeting options in Teams prevent students from starting meetings unattended, allows educators to determine who can present in a meeting, and give educators the ability to ensure only assigned students can join a meeting.
  5. Customized images and personalize learning spaces: With people working, living, and learning in shared spaces at home, in addition to using background blur and pre-selected background images, students and teachers can customize their own images and as a result, personalize their own learning space.
  6. Partner integrations: ‘Teams for Education’ now also includes integrations with Kahoot, Prezi, GO1, Nearpod, Piazza, Gaggle, Moodle, Canvas, and others. Microsoft will continue to add partner integrations making it easier for schools and universities to use Teams.

Microsoft will also continue working with a number of global non-governmental and non-profit organizations like UNESCO and UNICEF to harness technical expertise to support communities around the world with the highest need.

According to Taneja, who just finished his freshman year at the University of Texas at Austin, “That whole experience of two to three months of suffering — I think that really inspired me to learn programming and to use it as a problem-solving tool.”

Palash Taneja, then, drew on his own experience with illness to help others. He went on to create a web-based tool that uses machine learning to predict how mosquito-borne diseases like dengue fever would spread.

For his Swift Student Challenge submission this year, created against the backdrop of COVID-19, Taneja designed a Swift playground that teaches coding while simulating how a pandemic moves through a population, showing how precautions such as social distancing and masks can help slow infection rates. He created it to help educate young people, after he saw others not taking warnings seriously.

A man ordered a body lotion worth Rs 300 via Amazon and delivered Bose SoundSport Free wireless earbuds priced Rs 19,999

Many times, we came across so many incidents where many customers have complained of mistakenly being delivered with wrong products or of cheating related to other purchases or with regard to payment on e-commerce websites in India. But this time something unexpected happened, a person ordered a lotion from Amazon and received Bose earphones worth Rs 19,000.

This incident happened in Pune, Maharashtra where a man ordered a body lotion worth Rs 300 via e-commerce website Amazon. Instead of receiving the lotion, he was delivered Bose SoundSport Free wireless earbuds that retail in India around Rs 19,000. The man who orders the lotion is Pune-based Gautam Rege who duly informed the e-retailer and shared what he got delivered on Twitter. But instead of getting this returned the company asked him to keep the wrongly delivered order or the earphones as the shipment was non-returnable.

Interestingly he also shares in his tweets that the company has also given him a refund of Rs 300 for not delivering the lotion. Soon after this, his series of tweets became viral and other users also shared similar experiences on the microblogging site. One of the users revealed that sometime back he ordered an after-shave lotion worth Rs 180 on Amazon but surprisingly he got a wrong shipment and he received a Lenovo Tab 4. In another Tweet, Kalyan Gandhapu shared that he ordered a Dell Monitor worth Rs 13,000 and instead of that he received Colin bottles, garbage, etc. To set the things right when he informed this to Amazon, they say the order is non-refundable.

Pune-based Gautam Rege has also shared pictures of what he delivered. In the pictures, one can also see a packet of 2-liter Surf Excel Matic liquid. In response, many users shared hilarious comments as well as suggestions. Take a look at people’s reactions to this incident.

This is not the first time we came across such an incident. Last year a Bangalore based engineer delivered a fake Apple iPhone 11 Pro model. The images, as well as videos of the fake phone, have also gone viral on the web. The phone looked like an iPhone but had different internals and it runs on Android instead of iOS.

Politicians who use humour on Twitter may lose credibility and support: Study

0

Political candidates’ use of humour on social media could sometimes backfire on them with potential supporters, suggests a new research that appeared in the journal ‘Communication Research Reports’. The study involved 476 college students from The Ohio State University who viewed a profile of a fictious political candidate on the social media site Twitter named Alex Smith. Mind you! No political party was assigned in this research.

Participants were randomly assigned to see an Alex Smith who was either male or female and either young or old, as depicted by their photos. The Twitter profiles contained five tweets pertaining to infrastructure, education, voting and campaign donations.

As per the study, people who participated in the research were more likely to view messages using humour as inappropriate for a political candidate they didn’t know. That led participants to rate a candidate using humour as less credible than one who didn’t – and less likely to get their vote.

“Candidates should be cautious about using humour on social media. People have expectations that politicians will show seriousness and competence even on social media, where users are often encouraged to be more informal,” said Olivia Bullock, co-author of the study and a doctoral student in communication at The Ohio State University.

Stating that people who participated in this research reacted to posts from a fictitious candidate about whom they had no prior knowledge, study co-author Austin Hubner, also a doctoral student in communication at Ohio State, said, “It is possible that the rules may be different for politicians – like Donald Trump or Elizabeth Warren – who are already known. For candidates who aren’t well-known, using humour may be more of a risk than for established politicians.”

Half of the participants saw straightforward tweets on the issue, while the other half saw tweets that used a humorous device – puns – to send the same message. As a result, candidates who used humour in their tweets were deemed less credible and participants were then less likely to say they would vote and campaign for and donate to them if they were running in their district. Mind you! The sex or age of the candidate did not affect how participants in the study judged the use of humour.

Therefore, the research hints that candidates should be mindful of their audience on social media, particularly when they’re first starting out as people have certain expectations of political candidates and they need to keep those in mind when they are communicating, concluded Bullock.

Windows 10 May 2020 Version 2004 update is causing sign-in issue to Google Chrome: But here is a hack to address this issue

Last Month in May Microsoft began the rollout of Windows 10 May 2020 Update. This time it came with the latest features, along with a slew of improvements focused upon consumers, gamers, and organizations. At the time of the release the company said it would take a “throttled rollout approach” so the users will receive the update in stages. But now many of the users have come up with a flaw that has been caused after installing the Windows 10 Version 2004. The new update related bug is keeping the users signed out from their Google accounts in the Chrome browser automatically while making them sign in again.

After the rollout of the latest Windows 10 May 2020 Update by Microsoft the users have been facing some issues related to Google Chrome along with other apps such as OneDrive causing a bunch of new issues. The update has been afflicted with some major problems that include compatibility problems, issues with the Bluetooth connectivity, causing performance issues, Blue Screen of Death errors for PCs with older drivers among others. It has another horrible undocumented bug causing Google Chrome to breakdown. One of the important issues caused is authentication or sign-in. Many of the users have reported that Windows 10’s version 2004 will sign out automatically and you will be asked to sign in again. This issue occurs once you close the Chrome browser and open it once again, hence all your saved credentials are also lost. However, uninstalling and again reinstalling the browser also doesn’t work. The issue was found to be inside the Insider Builds of Windows 10 v2004.

According to a report, this issue was also faced by the Chromium team but they were not planning to investigate it further at the initial stage until Google Security researcher Tavis Ormandy confronted a similar issue therefore a prompt action was taken and the team started investigating the issue further.

On investigation, the bug was discovered to be related to the Windows Data Protection API (DPAPI). This helps in keeping the data in Windows 2000 and later protected. It includes private keys, stored credentials, and other confidential information. The reason for this problem is still not known. Until Microsoft figures the problem out Tavis recommends following steps to address the issue:

  • Close Chrome.exe. You can also do it by opening Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to be sure that it is closed completely.
  • Press and hold Windows + L to lock the system
  • Now unlock the system by entering your password
  • Relaunch Chrome

According to Tavis this issue is seeming to be related to the master key cache and one can try the above-mentioned steps till Microsoft acknowledges the reports. He also mentioned this issue will appear as more people install 2004.

WhatsApp launches digital payments for its users in Brazil

In order to enable WhatsApp users to be able to send money securely or make a purchase from a local business without leaving their chat, the Facebook-owned instant messaging app has now introduced digital payments to its users in Brazil.

Asserting that more than 10 million small and micro businesses are the heartbeat of Brazil’s communities, a blogpost by WhatsApp revealed, “It’s become second nature to send a zap to a business to get questions answered. Now, in addition to viewing a store’s catalogue, customers will be able to send payments for products as well. Making payments simple can help bring more businesses into the digital economy, opening up new opportunities for growth.”

Besides this, WhatsApp also announced that it’s making sending money to loved ones as easy as sending a message. This step was much need as people are physically distant from one another. It must be noted that payments on WhatsApp are enabled by Facebook Pay. It was notified that there is a possibility for people and businesses to use the same card information across Facebook’s family of apps in the times ahead.

According to the blog post by WhatsApp, “We have built payments with security in mind and a special six digit PIN or fingerprint will be required to prevent unauthorized transactions. To start, we will support debit or credit cards from Banco do Brasil, Nubank, and Sicredi on the Visa and Mastercard networks – and we are working with Cielo, the leading payments processor in Brazil. We have built an open model to welcome more partners in the future.”

While sending money or making a purchase on WhatsApp is free for people, businesses need to pay a processing fee to receive customer payments, revealed the official blog post. This would be similar to the amount businesses would already pay while accepting a credit card transaction.

The Facebook-owned instant messaging app also added that it is looking forward to bring this digital payment feature to all its users across the world.

Here are some tips from Google for those working from home on G-Suite

The coronavirus pandemic has taken the world by storm insisting the employees from every corner of the world to take work from home. However, many countries including India have lifted the imposed lockdown due to dropping the economy, however half of the workforce from every industry is still preferring to work at home to stay safe and to contain the spread of the deadly virus. To make it easier for them Google has come up with few tips to brush up their G-Suite skill during the quarantine.

“The more people work from home, the more help we can use collaborating. If you use G Suite’s content collaboration tools—Google Docs, Sheets and Slides—we have some quick tips, based on our popular series of short videos, that can help you take your productivity game up a notch,” the company in its blog post said.

Here are five tips for users working at home on G-Suite:

  • One can add comments or even suggestions to make the document better or to update a slide. You can make use of the comments to give feedback or to interact around the content. To do this firstly highlight the sentence if you want to interact, then right-click and select comment. Now inside the box, you can leave feedback or comment. You can also tag a teammate by typing the “@” sign and their email address, and check the box to assign them an action item (they’ll receive an email notification). In addition to this, you will be able to use suggestion mode to propose edits without replacing the original text—then, the document owner and users with edit access can accept or reject the changes.
  • Sometimes we need to see what changes or how the old version of your documents has evolved or to restore your earlier version of Doc, Sheet or Slide. Google explains that you can do this in the file by clicking the grey text at the top saying “Last edit was on [date].” After this, a list of your last edited version will show up at the right column according to date as well as time. Clicking on a particular version will allow you to view associated changes. You can also revert to a particular version by clicking “Restore this version” (a blue button on the top left above your file). You can even name your versions to help keep track and quickly find the one you’re looking for.  If you’re working in Sheets, use edit history to track edits for a specific cell.
  • The G-suite users will also be able to have a live discussion around their project in order to cooperatively discuss and edit a file in real-time. This can be done by having a virtual meeting via Google Meet, click the Present button, choose the content you’d like to present such as Docs, Sheets as well as Slides then click Share (you can present your entire screen, a window or a Chrome tab).
  • Now the slow internet connections will not stop you from being productive. G-Suite features are also available for those having a weak or no internet connection; it also works offline. Yes, the offline mode allows you to still create, view and edit Docs, Sheets and Slides even when you are offline.  This can be done by enabling Offline mode in Google Drive, open Settings (click the gear icon in the top right of your screen in Drive) and check the box next to Offline. Then right-click on what you want to work offline and select “Available offline.”
  • Now you can comment on a colleague’s Word document, PowerPoint slide, or on an Excel spreadsheet. Using the Office edition one can also edit, comment and collaborate on Microsoft Office files, even if they don’t have Office installed. To do this go to Google Drive and double-click your Office file, which will open a preview of the file. At the top, click Open in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides. Then you can edit, share and collaborate as you usually would in a G Suite file and your changes will be saved to the original Office file.

WhatsApp multi-device support spotted in the latest beta version, will be available in future

Since the past one year, we have been hearing that to make its app more user friendly WhatsApp is working on a new feature to its smartphone platform that will allow users to enable multiple devices with one account. Now according to new development, the instant messaging service will soon bring this feature on its platform. A screenshot has been shared on the microblogging website Twitter giving us the indication the multi-device support is still under the pipeline and will soon be rolled out for the beta testing.

According to a new tweet by WABetaInfo which shares all the important updates related to WhatsApp the company will allow the users to use the messaging service with one account enabled on multiple devices. The WhatsApp beta tracker has also shared a screenshot to confirm that the upcoming feature is under development and is yet to be released.

The company is working on the ability to use WhatsApp accounts from four devices at the same time and would use Wi-Fi to connect or sync your data from multiple devices. The tweet reads, “Yes, it’s the ability to use your WhatsApp account from 4 devices at the same time. Under development, but it’s great!”

In some of the previous reports that stated that WhatsApp parent company Facebook is working on a UWP version of the application that will allow this feature to take place. It will be platform agnostic and consumers can use the messaging service with one account enabled on multiple devices and expected to be rolled out to Android as well as iOS devices. A concrete timeline for the rollout has not been confirmed as yet. But if we go by the past rollouts by WhatsApp, this update should be out in the coming months.

Moreover, a very recent report also claimed that the much-anticipated feature was spotted in the latest WhatsApp version 2.20.143 beta for Android beta users. As purported by WABEtainfo only one can make use of the multi-device support by just scanning the QR code. This means that you won’t be disconnected from your main device when you try to log in from a different phone. According to a shared screenshot which shows that the string “Use WhatsApp on other devices”, suggesting that other devices will be able to use the same account in the future. The connection to the internet won’t be necessary for the main device!

It is also being suggested that this feature is important for those using a tablet. “Android, WhatsApp is currently working, on the 2.20.143 beta update, on the main registration screen, that asks to use your WiFi network to save data” the report stated. However, in the coming months, the feature will be available on the platform and it is important to note that all your devices will be getting incoming messages when the multi-device feature is active, and all actions will be synced (for example starring a message, muting/archiving a chat, etc..).
