Apple now owns Intel’s smartphone modem patents valued at$1 billion

0

Apple in a deal valued at $1 billion USD with Intel purchased the greater part of Intel’s smartphone modem patents. As per the deal, 2200 Intel employees will join the company alongside intellectual property equipment and leases in order to manufacture its own line of 5G chips in order to diminish its reliance on Qualcomm. In addition to this, the Smartphone maker will now be the owner of 17,000 wireless technology patents that will include a variety of cellular communication standards to modems hence it will now be a more influential competitor across the world. Therefore playing a vital role in global licensing talks between chief 5G patent holders like Huawei Technologies.

Intel CEO Bob Swan said “This agreement enables us to focus on developing technology for the 5G network while retaining critical intellectual property and modem technology that our team has created. We have long respected Apple and we’re confident they provide the right environment for this talented team and these important assets moving forward. We’re looking forward to putting our full effort into 5G where it most closely aligns with the needs of our global customer base, including network operators, telecommunications equipment manufacturers and cloud service providers.”

intel

After this news, Intel’s shares rose 5.7 percent to $55.05. Intel, a leader in the semiconductor industry, will continue to build up modems for the non-smartphone applications, such as PCs, industrial equipment along with self-driving cars.

Johny Srouji, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Technologies said “We’ve worked with Intel for many years and know this team shares Apple’s passion for designing technologies that deliver the world’s best experiences for our users.  Apple is excited to have so many excellent engineers join our growing cellular technologies group, and know they’ll thrive in Apple’s creative and dynamic environment. They, together with our significant acquisition of innovative IP, will help expedite our development on future products and allow Apple to further differentiate moving forward.”

After the news spread, Apple’s shares rose by 0.1 percent to $207.29. The Cupertino based company has always relied on external suppliers for Modem chips to connect devices. After its dispute with Qualcomm over patent licensing practices Apple chose Intel as its sole source of iPhone modem chips. After its deal with Intel will boost up Apple’s aspiration to manufacture its own modem chips. Apple’s two biggest competitors Samsung and Huawei by now are capable of manufacturing their own modem chips leaving behind Apple. This will speed up the development of producing a modem under Apple, too.

It is also reported that Apple is planning to make use of Qualcomm’s modem technology for a 5G iPhone in 2020 because the smartphone company will not be able to self-supply modem chips till September 2020. So it has collaborated with Intel to start the development of the 5G modem technology all set to be used in some of its devices by 2021.

However, smartphone brands such as OPPO and Vivo have shifted their focus on online channel expansion strategy. Both the brands have also increased their offline platform incentive by launching mid-range Smartphones A5 and Y91i. To increase its sales the company heavily promoted its products during IPL and Cricket World Cup. While trade ban on Chinese Smartphone brand Huawei shipments declined Year on Year.

Google launches Sound Amplifier app to help people with hearing impairments

0

Earlier this year, search giant Google introduced an app to help people with hearing impairments. As promised, the company has launched the Sound Amplifier app that assists the people ‘hear better’. The app is now available for Android devices running Android 6.0 Marshmallow and beyond.

In its blog post the company said, “For the 466 million people in the world who have hearing loss, the inability to hear a conversation or the sounds around you can be isolating. Without a clear sound, it’s challenging to connect to the people around you and fully experience the world. And simply asking others to speak louder (or turn up the TV volume) isn’t a helpful solution because people hear more clearly at different audio frequencies.” The app can be downloaded via the Google Play Store.

It is an Android Accessibility app that helps the group of people hear more clearly without having to ask someone to speak loudly or turn the volume up in order to perceive sound more noticeably. Google has stated that “Using machine learning, we sorted through thousands of publicly available hearing studies and data to understand how people hear in different environments and created a few simple controls.”

How Google’s Sound Amplifier app works

Before using the Sound Amplifier app, the user has to first plug in their headphones. It allows the user to modify frequencies to bump up essential sounds as per their needs.

It helps to filter out all the unnecessary background sounds and also helps to amplify the voice of the people that the user wants to hear while sitting with them. In addition to this, the app assists the user to listen to the conversation more clearly in noisy places like restaurants or malls. It also allows the user to personalize frequency levels of sounds coming from a TV without bothering others. It also increases the presenter’s voice at the lecture.

Besides this, Google has also added an audio visualization feature for detecting or enhancing sound by using the Sound Amplifier.

The visualiser helps to give the user an idea about when it detects some sound or someone’s voice so that it can assist them to visualize the changes they are making to it.

Google explains, “Like a volume number on your TV, you know how much the sound is boosted even if you can’t hear it yet.” The app comes added with a couple of new visual updates. The users can easily start the app directly from their smartphone’s home screen instead of heading to Accessibility settings. With the help of reorganized control settings, the user can easily choose between increasing the sound or filter out the background noise.

“Sound Amplifier is the latest step in our commitment to make audio clear and accessible for everyone. And we’ll continue to improve the app through new features that enhance sound for all types of hearing,” Google has added.

However, now the WhatsApp Payments service is in its final stage and will be made available in India soon.

Speaking about it, Cathcart said, “To boost digital inclusion in India, we can launch the (Pay) service across the country later this year after meeting regulations.”

It is worth mentioning that India’s digital payments industry is estimated to hit $1 trillion by 2023.

Niti Aayog’s CEO Amitabh Kant said that WhatsApp was delayed in meeting India’s regulatory norms and that is why it had to delay the launch of the payments service. He said, “We look forward to WhatsApp Pay in India once it fulfils all the regulatory requirements.”

We should add here that WhatsApp Pay would be able to create a huge opportunity for the MSMEs to go digital. Speaking about WhatsApp payments coming to India, Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research said to news agency IANS, ” Given the popularity and reach of Whatsapp in India, it is a given that WhatsApp Pay will make a strong dent on the payments ecosystem, and the incumbents therein.”

In April this year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that the company was working to launch the payment service in India.

WhatsApp payments would pose as a big competitor to Paytm, which is one of the most popular digital payments apps in India till now. Ram also agrees to this and he said, “WhatsApp Pay has the potential to take Paytm head on, and race to the top of the payments market in India.” He further added, “WhatsApp Pay’s entry is a very pivotal moment in India’s e-payments history. It is almost akin to the launch of WeChat Pay that transformed payments in China. Imagine being able to make payments on platforms like BookMyShow via the WhatsApp integration.”

WhatsApp Payments launch

It is worth adding that WhatsApp has a user base of over 300 million people in India, and once it gets its payments service to the country, even at the inception, the number would surpass Paytm’s user base of 230 million.

Speaking on it, Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research said, “Digital wallet payment solutions are becoming more relevant for the Indian economy driven by mobile-centric Internet penetration. WhatsApp has the potential to leverage its existing user base and become the leading payments services.”

Telecommunications major Vodafone has revised its Rs 1,699 prepaid plan to offer 1.5GB daily data benefits for up to 365 days. It also includes unlimited voice calls and 100 free daily SMS per day. Recently, Vodafone also launched two new prepaid recharge plans of Rs. 205 and Rs. 225. The telecom company lately also modified its Rs. 129 prepaid recharge plan and it now offers 2GB data for up to 28 days. We should mention that prior to this, Rs 1,699 prepaid plan was offering a validity for 365 days and it came with an unlimited local and national calling exclusive of any FUP.

As mentioned on Vodafone’s website, the upgraded Rs 1,699 prepaid recharge plan now offers 500MB of added 4G/ 3G data per day over the 1GB data benefits that were available till now. The telecom company has also revised the Rs 365 prepaid plan, so it now offers unlimited local, STD, as well as roaming calls along with 100 SMS for each day. The plan also has a validity of 365 days. In addition to this, the company is also offering complimentary access to the Vodafone Play app that offers a variety of live TV shows and movies.

The revision of Rs. 1,699 Vodafone prepaid recharge plan was first reported by Telecom Talk. At present, the company has rolled out the prepaid recharge plan for select states including Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, Kolkata, Maharashtra and Goa, Mumbai, and the UP East circles.

With the revised Rs. 1,699 prepaid recharge plan, the company is directly taking on its competitor Airtel. For those unaware, Airtel also recently revised its Rs. 1,699 prepaid plan. Airtel’s plan now provides 1.4GB daily data benefits with 365 days of validity.

But then, there’s no telecom war Reliance Jio is not a part of. Recently, the telecom company also came up with Rs. 1,699 prepaid plan that offers a similar 1.5GB daily data, along with unlimited voice calls and 100 SMS daily for 365 days.

To recall, Vodafone made revisions to some of its prepaid plans earlier this month after which itsRs 129 plan now offers up to 2GB data for 28 days. Besides this, it also introduced two new prepaid recharge plans of Rs 205 and Rs 225 that also offers 4GB data benefits.

The two will also be developing programs to address the challenges that are faced by women entrepreneurs. We should mention that under the new initiative, the register users of WEP will be targeted.

WhatsApp will also be partnering with Women Transforming India (WTI) Awards 2019, which is the flagship initiative of NITI Aayog. The company has also decided to provide support of $1,00,000 to the winners of WTI. The WTI Awards are organised by NITI Aayog in partnership with the United Nations. The awards aim at recognising the “exceptional achievements by women who are breaking the glass ceiling and challenging stereotypes through businesses, enterprises, and initiatives aimed at solving key societal challenges.”

Microsoft is removing Cortana from Xbox One with new redesign

Software giant Microsoft is making changes to the dashboard design of Xbox One again and this time, it will be removing the Cortana digital assistant from it. The company is currently experimenting with the more “streamlined user interface” for the Xbox One dashboard’s home section. It is worth noticing that this is the area that you will see when you switch on an Xbox One console.

With the new design, the dashboard will get quicker access to Xbox Game Pass titles, Microsoft’s Mixer service, Xbox community feature and the Microsoft Store. Speaking about the newly introduced changes, Bradley Rossetti, Microsoft’s Xbox Insider chief said, “We’ve heard your feedback and have continued to iterate on Home to get you into your gaming experiences faster and keeping more of your content front and center. With this new experimental Home design, the first thing you’ll notice is we’ve removed the Twists from the top of Home in favor of separate buttons that launch your gaming experiences.”

We should point out that this will make it easier for users to access frequently used games directly from the home screen of the console. The software giant is testing this new home screen with Xbox Insiders only in the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings. The company has also said that it is looking for feedback from them. It is worth noticing that Microsoft has tweaked the design of its Xbox One dashboard a few times already since the console was unveiled in attempts that are aimed at improving the user experience that it offers. A big revamp was done in 2015 and the Fluent Design update was introduced in 2017.

Xbox one console

Apart from the latest Home update, the company is also removing Cortana from the Xbox One. The software giant has said that it is moving closer to cloud-based assistants, so you no longer be able to “talk to Cortana via your headset.” But then, the company has also added that users will be able to power on an Xbox One gaming console via Xbox Skill for Cortana on iOS, Android or Windows and it will be similar to the existing Alexa integration.

We should add that it is not surprising to see that Cortana is going away from the Xbox One. The company also has a new focus for Cortana in scenarios that are more business-related. Microsoft is also working to make Cortana better at conversations. Prior to this, Microsoft also decoupled Cortana and Search in the Windows May 2019 update that was released recently. After that, it was reported that Cortana will be added as a separate app on the Microsoft Store.

Samsung Galaxy Fold issues have been fixed, to launch in September

The wait for Samsung Galaxy Fold is finally coming to an end. After postponing the launch of its foldable smartphone for months, Samsung has said that it has redesigned the handset to address all the issues in it and will now be launching it in September this year.

We should mention that the South Korean technology giant was one among the first companies to announce its foldable smartphone. However, when the company sent some units of Galaxy Fold to reviewers and YouTubers in the United States, several issues were discovered. The most prominent one among these was that the display of some units of the device cracked.

In a blog post, the company has said, “Earlier this year, we announced Galaxy Fold—Samsung’s first foldable device, and the beginning of an entirely new mobile category. Since then, we’ve made improvements to the Galaxy Fold to ensure consumers have the best possible experience.”

While Samsung has announced that it has fixed the issues with Galaxy Fold and will be launching it in September, it is yet to announce a specific date for the same. Speaking about the changes it has made, the company has said, “Samsung has taken the time to fully evaluate the product design, make necessary improvements and run rigorous tests to validate the changes we made.”

According to Samsung’s blog post, the improvements made in Galaxy Fold include:

  • The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.
  • Galaxy Fold features additional reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles while maintaining its signature foldable experience:
  • The top and bottom of the hinge area have been strengthened with newly added protection caps.
  • Additional metal layers underneath the Infinity Flex Display have been included to reinforce the protection of the display.
  • The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.

Samsung Galaxy Fold launch

Samsung has also added that it “has also been continuously working to improve the overall Galaxy Fold user experience, including optimizing more apps and services for its unique foldable UX.”

The company, however, has specified that the handset will only be launching in a few markets initially. But then, before the Samsung Galaxy Fold controversy happened, the company’s CEO DJ Koh had said that the smartphone will be launched in India too. But then, we can’t say whether that will happen in September along with other countries which will get it during the first wave.
