Oppo K3 expected to launch in India soon, teased on Amazon India

Chinese technology company Oppo has started teasing its new, upcoming smartphone on Amazon India. The company is all set to launch its Oppo K3 handset in India, that is the successor to its previously launched K1 smartphone. Oppo has set up a dedicated ‘Notify Me’ teaser page on Amazon India, and it is being speculated that it is meant for Oppo K3. But then, we should mention that the page does not have the name of any handset on it.

According to a report in MSP, the company is getting the Oppo K3 to India, that will come with a few additional features and upgrades from its predecessor K1. It is worth pointing out that Oppo launched its K3 smartphone in its home country two months back, so it is very likely that the company is planning to get the device to India too. In China, the Oppo K3 is available in two storage variants – 6GB RAM/64GB storage and 8GB RAM/128GB storage. While the former is priced at RMB 1,599 (approximately Rs 16,000), the latter costs RMB 1,899 (roughly Rs 19,000). We would have to wait for a few more days to get more concrete information on the pricing and availability details of the smartphone in India.

The key feature of the Oppo K3 smartphone is its selfie camera that is housed in a pop-up module. The handset is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 processor and comes with the company’s VOOC 3.0 fast charging. Here’s a look at the complete specifications of the Oppo K3 smartphone:

Oppo K3 specifications

The newly launched Oppo K3 handset runs Android 9.0 Pie skinned with Color OS 6.0 and it features a 6.5-inch AMOLED display that has a screen-to-body ratio of 91.1%. The screen of the device has Full HD+ resolution and it comes with DC dimming. The smartphone comes with a 3D gradient back design and an S-shaped curve. Oppo K3 also comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner that is claimed to be 28.5% faster.

Oppo K3 phone

The handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 octa-core processor and comes with up to 8GB of RAM. It houses up to 256GB of UFS 2.1 storage. The device comes with a pop-up selfie camera module that packs a 16MP lens. On the back panel of the handset, there is a dual rear camera setup that comes with a 16MP sensor and a 2MP sensor.

The device comes with a 3,765mAh battery that, as we mentioned earlier, comes with support for VOOC 3.0 fast charging technology.

Ola gets a green light to launch taxi business in London

Ola Cabs is India’s answer to taxi-hailing service Uber and it has grown phenomenally since it was launched in 2010. In 2018, the company started expanding overseas when it took its operations to Australia and New Zealand. Now, the company has received the approval from London’s transport regulator to begin private hire vehicles in the United Kingdom’s capital.

Ola UK Private Limited now has a carriage license from TFL for a year to operate that permits it to operate ‘PHV vehicles’ across London. With this, the drivers would have to apply for a licence and list their vehicle as privately registered for hire, the company has specified in a statement that it issued to the press.

We should mention that Ola has taken this move just days after Morgan Stanley analyst says that the company will become a threat to Uber in the United Kingdom. A big reason behind the prediction was the fact that Ola has raised more capital as compared to other app-based cab-hailing companies.

We should mention that according to Morgan Stanley, Ola Cabs has a total funding of $3.8 billion, and this makes it far ahead of others. To give you a better idea of the competitors, Bolt has just re-entered the market in the UK recently, has till now raised a funding of $190 million to $280 million.

Prior to Ola’s entry in the UK, analysts had said, “We believe Ola is arguably a greater threat if media reports of Ola’s entry into London at the end of the year prove accurate.”

Ola Cabs’ investors include the likes of SoftBank, Sequoia Capital, Accel, Kia Motors and Hyundai. In addition to this, the company is also trying to get more investors onboard to give Uber a good fight, especially in India where the market is extremely competitive.

Ola

An Ola spokesperson, in a statement to the press, said that the company is “looking forward to building world-class mobility offerings for London, by collaborating with drivers, riders, the government, and local authorities. London is one of the world’s most iconic cities and hosts a progressive mobility environment. We couldn’t be more excited to bring Ola to London in the time ahead.”

Currently, Ola’s operations are active in 150 countries in India. Since last year, the company has been expanding its operations to other countries too, and it has reached Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom so far. The company serves more than 150 million users and has reported to have a billion rides annually.

OnePlus smartphone catches fire even though it was switched off and not charging: Report

Chinese technology company OnePlus usually gets applauded for offering smartphones with premium specification at an affordable price. However, this time, the company has created headlines for the wrong reasons. A report has surfaced online that says that a user’s OnePlus One smartphone caught fire randomly in the middle of the night. But then, the user was able to douse the fire so the situation was under control before the handset exploded.

According to an email the user sent to the company, his device was switched off when the incident occurred and it was not even put on charging. This makes it even more strange as most other smartphones that have been reported to catch fire usually did so while they were being charged. The report has pointed out that the incident took place on July 3 at around 3:15 AM. The user has also said that the room in which the smartphone caught fire had an air conditioner which had been set to 19 degrees.

The user claims that he was woken up in the middle of the night when he smelt something burning and then saw that his room was filled with fumes. He then doused the fire using water. According to the user, the mobile phone was placed just a few feet away from him, so the situation would have been much more dangerous had he not woken up on time.

While the smartphone is five years old, such an incident should not happen because it can put someone’s life in danger, the user said. He reached out to OnePlus and Amazon India and told them about the matter. The incident only came to light after India Today anchor Chaiti Narula took to Twitter to speak about it. She even posted images of the damaged smartphone.

OnePlus’ team responded to her tweet and said that their Critical Escalations Team is looking into the matter. They added that the team is in touch with the user and is working to solve the issue.

We should point out that it is not at all common for OnePlus smartphones to explode. This may be one among the first few incidents when such a thing has happened. But then, it is scary to think that a smartphone can explode even when it is not charging and is switched off. The reason can also be that the device is very old, but even then, it can prove to be extremely dangerous.

Uber Pro program comes to India: Here are the rewards it offers

America-based technology company Uber can be given the credit for changing the way we hail a cab. While earlier we had to call and book taxis in advance, now, they are just a few smartphone taps away no matter where we are or what time of the day it is. The service has not only helped customers but cab drivers too. While earlier it was very difficult for them to find jobs, now it is not. Last year, the company had launched its Uber Pro service in the United States that was aimed at benefitting drivers. Now, Uber Pro is being launched in India and Mexico too, with unique program elements to cater to both countries.

The company has announced on its blog that with Uber Pro, drivers in India who are associated with the company will get “access to free medical consultations, micro-credit loans, discounts for education and coaching modules that can be passed along to their children, as well as helpful rewards like faster airport pickups.”

Uber also added that it has partnered with a number of companies to provide “additional savings on car maintenance costs and discounts on life insurance” to the drivers. The company has said that Uber Pro was first launched to give the rewards to drivers that they wanted, so the offerings were decided on the basis of their feedback. Even in India, Uber has adopted the same model and will be delivering what drivers told the company that they wanted.

Uber Pro

Coming to Mexico, Uber Pro will be reaching several cities over there. The company has said that eligible drivers will be able to “access higher education through our partnership with UTEL, which is partnering with Uber to offer discounted, flexible study programs.”

Uber has also said that it has partnered with companies to provide the “first free driver debit card available in Latin America.” With this, the everyday spending of the drivers will be rewarded with cash back and no annual fee will be charged, the company claims.

In addition to this, eligible drivers in Mexico will be able to get “instant access to earnings through Instant Pay, which they can use to cash out up to five times per day–free of cost.” Besides this, they will also get access to Quest promotions, faster airport pickups, 24/7 phone support, visibility into trip duration among other rewards.

Uber has said that with its Uber Pro program, it aims to help its drivers get a step closer to their long-term ambitions.

Google is replacing Panorama with Night Sight as a main camera mode on Pixel smartphones

0

Technology giant Google seems to be adopting a more intelligent way of placing the various camera modes that are present on the app. The company seems to have realised that people don’t use the panorama mode as much as they use other modes to capture the best possible image. As a result of this, Google will reportedly place its Night Sight feature to its main list of camera modes. With this, Panorama mode will go further away. But then, it makes perfect sense as the Night Sight feature is way more useful than the Panorama mode.

According to 9to5Google, in the latest Android Q beta build the feature can already be seen. It can be seen that Night Sight has taken the place of Panorama as the mode on the extreme left. If this remains unchanged, here’s a list of modes that you will be able to swipe between besides the main viewfinder:

  • Night Sight
  • Portrait
  • Camera
  • Video

Besides this, there is an option of More that has modes like Panorama, Photo Sphere, Photo Booth, Slow Motion, Time Lapse and Playground.

While the change is a small one, it does make all the sense in the world considering Google has been advertising the Night Sight mode and even compared it to the iPhone XS. We should mention that Apple’s offering comes without a dedicated low-light mode. Pixel 3, and in turn Night Sight feature, has been surpassed in terms of performance by Huawei P30 Pro. However, Night Sight still continues to be a highlighted feature of Pixel devices. On the other hand, the Panorama mode on Google is not exactly a standout feature and is a lot like the one on other smartphones.

But then, we should mention that in the same updated camera app, the ability to adjust the white balance has been removed. The temperature icon that let users adjust the white balance cannot be found on the app anymore, so it is safe to assume that Google has quietly removed the feature. A lot of people may not even notice the change, but then, those who click pictures using the Pixel professionally will be disappointed with it.

Google Pixel 3a review

It is worth noticing that Google has also added the Night Sight feature to its Pixel 3a smartphone, that is the affordable version of its flagship Pixel 3. You can read our review of the Pixel 3a here to know how the camera performed.

Apple will be changing the design of its MacBook keyboard

0

Cupertino-based technology giant Apple will reportedly ditch the controversial butterfly keyboard that it has been using in its MacBooks since 2015. Another report also claims that the company will be switching to a new scissor-switch design instead that will make use of glass fiber in order to reinforce the keys.

While the first development has been shared by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the information about the scissor-switch keyboard design first surfaced on 9to5Mac. Kuo’s report also said that the laptop that will be the first to get the new keyboard will be a new MacBook Air model that will be launched this year. The MacBook Pro that will be launched in 2020 will also sport the same keyboard design. Kuo said, “We predict that the butterfly keyboard may finally disappear in the long term.”

Apple has been tweaking the design of its butterfly keyboard with every MacBook in order to overcome some problem that customers commonly complain about. These include keys act in a strange manner and the keyboard not functioning properly or even stopping to work completely. Apple has apologised about the issues customers have faced because of its keyboard earlier this year. The Cupertino based technology giant said that a small number of users had experienced some troubles with its keyboard. In the past, it has also launched a repair program for the earlier versions of the device.

Macbook keyboard

Kuo has given a number of different reasons why Apple is changing its keyboard design. The most prominent one among them is that the upcoming keyboard will be more durable because it will come with glass fiber replacement. According to a MacRumors report that quotes him, the new keyboard “could improve the typing experience by offering longer key travel.”

However, he has also added that the butterfly switch design is expensive for the company to manufacture and that the new scissor switch design will be more affordable. But then, one can’t expect it to be as affordable as the keyboard of an average laptop.

We should also point out that while the current design has some disadvantages, it is extremely thin. This can prove to be very important for those who value space when they buy a laptop that is as premium and modern as the MacBook.

According to Kuo, the new design of the keyboard will make it slightly thicker, however, he also added that “most users can’t tell the difference.”

The report has also added that the keyboard would not ship with the 16-inch MacBook Pro that is supposed to launch this year. It would also not be present on the rumoured 13-inch MacBook Pro model.

Google is making Android Q’s gesture navigation better before release: Here’s how

Before rolling out Android Q to the masses, technology giant Google is experimenting with its gesture-based navigation continuously so that it can be improved as much as possible. Lately, the company has been inching towards the approach that Apple adopted with its iPhone X. However, for this, Google had to redesign the back button on its Android platform. Going forward, the company will not be keeping an on-screen button. Instead, it will be using a swiping motion to go back. So basically, the users will have to swipe inwards from either side of the display to go back on their Android devices.

We should mention that this change clashes with the slide-out menus of a number of smartphone apps. Most apps have their hamburger icons placed on the side that lets users access various settings. This has been the case for so many years now that users now almost intuitively slide their finger to access the drawer menu settings. But now, this does not work in the same way anymore and one has to slide their finger diagonally to access the menu.

If this is a change that you don’t really like, then we have some good news for you. The company is working to improve this in its upcoming Android Q beta 5. The search giant has said that in order to access slide-out menus, people would now only have to tap and hold near the edge of the display. This obviously only implies to those who are using fully gestural navigation on their device.

With this solution, Google’s new feature that allows users to go back with just a swipe from either side of the screen will continue to work as well. But that’s not all. According to a report in 9to5Google, a user who got the next beat of Android Q a little early says that a new setting has been added to his device called ‘Back Sensitivity.’ The user has also said that the new setting has led to a “marked improvement to navigation” on his handset.

In case you don’t like the new gesture system on Android Q, there will also be an option of returning to the older three-button navigation. So, if you are more comfortable with that and don’t want to try something new, you can still opt for that. The option is there in the beta releases of Android Q and it is also expected to be a part of the stable release.

Google has made payments easier on Chrome: Here’s how

Google Chrome will now be able to pay in a much easier way when they shop online. Google has rolled out an update that lets users access payment information that they have stores in their Account. Earlier one had the option of syncing this information between browsers on various platforms by switching on the option of Google Sync. But now, the company has made this much easier as it will let users auto-fill information for payments just by signing in to their Google Account on desktop.

We should mention that one would not need to enable Chrome sync in order to do this. The feature has been made with Google Pay, that the company is expanding to more websites on the internet. It is worth noticing that Google only started doing this once it rebranded its payment service from ‘Android Pay’, which makes sense as it shows that it is cross-platform in nature and not only limited to smartphones.

Around a fortnight back, the technology giant also announced that Google Pay’s integration with PayPal will also be available to online merchants that accept the company’s payment on their websites as well as on their apps.

With the new option that has been enabled, Chrome users on the desktop will get the ability to opt for a saved payment card from their Google Accounts. This option will pop-up when they will be checking out to make the payment. The users will have to enter their card’s CVC number to complete the transaction and then, they will get a receipt from Google Pay about their purchase.

UPI APP GOOGLE TEZ

In addition to this, users will also have the option of managing their credit and debit cards that are associated with their Google Accounts. For doing this, they can head to Account Settings and then tap on Payments & Subscriptions > Payment methods.

We should also point out that if you use this new feature, it will not automatically enable the Chrome sync option. You will have to do that manually if you want information like bookmarks, passwords and history to be synced across all your devices.

This feature definitely makes payments way easier for those who prefer to shop online and don’t exactly prefer to have Chrome synced on all their devices. There are people who would prefer to keep information on their work laptop and their personal devices separate and they are likely to benefit from it.

iOS 13 is set to change FaceTime calls forever

0

A few weeks back at the WWDC 2019, Apple gave the first look at its iOS 13 operating system. However, developer beta of iOS versions always gives a better understanding of what all the software will get to the devices. iOS 13’s third beta developer is now out and it comes with a new feature that makes it look like you are directly staring at the selfie camera of your iPhone while you are making a FaceTime call. So even when you are looking at the screen of your smartphone to see the person you are talking to, your iPhone with iOS 13 will make it look like you are looking at the front camera.

The feature was spotted by Mike Rundle on Twitter and as of now, it only seems to be working on the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max. Users have the option of enabling or disabling it from within the FaceTime app.

Usually, the person we are talking to via a video call looks like he is looking at one side or the other because no one really looks at the selfie camera the entire time. The entire purpose of a video call is to see the person you are talking to and one can only do that when they look at the screen and not the front-facing camera on their handset.

But Apple seems to have found the solution for this with its ‘FaceTime Attention Correction’ feature. The company seems to have deployed some kind of an image manipulation tool to make it look like the user is looking at the selfie camera of the device. As a result, people having a FaceTime call will always feel like they have an eye contact with one another, even if in reality, they don’t.

It is worth pointing that it was Rundle, who had said in 2017 that Apple would be launching this feature in a future iOS version.

Dave Schunik has explained on Twitter that the effect has been added using ARKit by mapping user’s face and then adjusting the position of their eyes.

However, what is not clear as of now is that which handsets by Apple will eventually get this feature. It is also unknown if the feature will work with Group Calls on FaceTime. We expect to find out more about the new feature when it arrives in the public facing beta next week.

PUBG Mobile: How to choose the right grip?

Since popular battle royale PUBG made its way to smartphones as PUBG Mobile, scores of players across the globe are just focussed on somehow getting the chicken dinner. To be the last standing man in the game, pure skill does not help and one needs to know a number of tips and tricks. Besides this, having knowledge of weapons and some secret locations also help. But then, there is one more thing that you must know about: Grips.

They can be equipped on various guns in the play and they drastically enhance the players’ accuracy. However, using any grip with any gun wouldn’t help either. A grip proves to be beneficial only when it adds some value to achieving better kills. Here, we have listed down all the PUBG Mobile grips in the order of their versatility and performance during combat based on the abilities of each gun. Take a look:

Number 1 – The Half Grip

This is the most versatile grip that is available in PUBG Mobile as of now and it gets a number of upgrades to a player’s skills. When a player is engaged in combat, he needs the ability to shoot at and stay on the target the most. According to Tencent Games, the half grip fairly reduces recoil and most importantly improves recoil recovery. This enables the player to get better aimed and a greater number of shots at the enemy.

While half grip does a better job at controlling the vertical recoil than it does with horizontal recoil, but it has a quick recovery time that can make one overlook all of its other shortcomings. However, we should point out that one major shortcoming is also that the weapon steadiness decreases when the player uses this attachment. So, it is advisable to use this grip only with steady weapons like UMP9, AUG A3, and the Vector.

Number 2 – The Thumb Grip

A number of PUBG Mobile players place their bets on the vertical grip and say that it is better than the thumb grip. But then, the thumb gets the second spot on the list because it is extremely versatile. We should mention that while the thumb grip lessens the recoil on a good scale, it cannot match up to the vertical grip. Another thing worth mentioning is that it reduces the time taken to open a scope. The company has also said that it enhances weapon stability.

Number 3 – The Vertical Grip

The vertical grip is the preferred choice of weapon for many who play PUBG Mobile and as the name suggests, it comes with a strong vertical kick. It is the only attachment that is actually compatible with the Tommy Gun. The company says that the vertical grip is very versatile. While the vertical recoil is predictable, the horizontal one is not as it goes both the ways. It also offers good weapon stability.

Number 4 – The Angled Grip

The angled grip is considered to be the best one for SMGs and ARs in PUBG Mobile and it makes a great difference to the horizontal recoil when kept in a steady state. It is also said to offer better ADS speed. But then, it is not as good as the thumb grip when it comes to weapon steadiness.

Number 5 – The Light Grip

The light grip is undeniably the best when it comes to taking single shots in PUBG Mobile. It should be used with stable guns like the Vector or UMP9 for enhancing their accuracy. It comes with excellent weapon stability, but then, the same cannot be said for its recoil. The downside of the grip is that it is not versatile.

Samsung has reportedly fixed the screen issue of Galaxy Fold

South Korean technology giant Samsung has been working to fix the issues in the Galaxy Fold handset that led to its delay. Now, a report has surfaced online that claims that it has redesigned the Galaxy Fold in a way it that it addresses the problems that existed earlier.

We should mention that it took the company two months to fix the screen durability issues of its foldable phone. Samsung was initially supposed to launch the Galaxy Fold in April this year. But prior to the launch, the company sent few units of the smartphone to the reviewers a Youtubers in the US. After the reviewers found out a serious screen malfunctioning and some hinge issues in the device, the company postponed the launch of the smartphone. The issue was reportedly discovered after a film on the display was peeled off.

The company has now re-engineered the hinge and the protective film has been stretched a little so that it wraps around the whole screen perfectly and drift into the bezels. With this, the film will be impossible to peel off by hands. The hinge of the handset has been pushed slightly upwards from the screen so that it helps the film to stretch a little extra when the user unfolds the phone.

Soon, the company will reportedly start shipping the components of the foldable smartphone including the display and battery to its main plant in Vietnam for assembly. However, Samsung is yet to decide the launch date of the Galaxy Fold.

But then, the South Korean technology giant has confirmed that it will not be unveiling the redesigned Galaxy Fold this month. It is also speculated that Samsung might unveil the handset for the masses during its Galaxy Unpacked event that will be held in New York on August 7. The company is hosting the event to unveil the Galaxy Note 10 handset to the world and is also expected to launch its Galaxy Home speaker there.
