Netflix is rolling out a cheaper mobile-only plan for India

0

Popular video-streaming service Netflix has announced that it will be launching a new and more affordable mobile-only plan for India. With this new plan, Netflix eyes to compete with other video streaming platforms in India like Amazon’s Prime Video and Hotstar.

In March this year, the video streaming platform was seen testing its mobile-only subscription plan in India. The new plan will that costs half of its basic plan. At the moment, its monthly plan starts at Rs 500 and on the other hand, the mobile-only plan that it is set to launch will be priced at Rs 250 per month.

In India, Disney owned Hotstar charges Rs 365 annually from its subscribers. Hotstar also offers content from AT&T’s HBO and streams live sports by paying Rs 299 monthly. On the other hand, Amazon charges Rs 999 annually from its customers for its Amazon Prime paid service that also includes Prime Videos. As one can see, these companies are offering relatively more affordable plans than Netflix. So, to compete with its other rivals, Netflix will be bringing the plan with a much lower price to succeed in India. At the moment, Netflix is offering it is offering three monthly plans that can cost between Rs 500 to Rs 800. So instead of paying monthly for the service, the customers will have an option to go with the plans that are being offered by other video streaming platforms that let them avail services for an entire year at a similar price.

Netflix, in a letter to its shareholders, said, “After several months of testing, we’ve decided to roll out a lower-priced mobile-screen plan in India to complement our existing plans. We believe this plan, which will launch in Q3, will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay-TV ARPU is low (below $5). We will continue to learn more after the launch of this plan.”

We should add here that Netflix’s announcement was a part of its quarterly results and the company has reported lower-than-expected growth in the number of subscribers. India will be playing an important role in CEO Reed Hastings’ plans for global expansion. To woo the audience in India, Netflix is investing a fair share of money in creating blockbuster shows like Sacred Games with celebrities from Bollywood. The second season of the show is all set to release on August 15.

Speaking on this, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “We’ve been seeing nice steady increases in engagement with our Indian viewers that we think we can keep building on. Growth in that country is a marathon, so we’re in it for the long haul.”

Instagram expands its test to hide like counts to six more countries

At Facebook’s Annual Develop Conference F8, Instagram announced that it will be testing a new feature that will hide users’ public like counts from their posts. Today, the company has announced that it will be expanding its hidden like count test to six more countries including Ireland, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. The test was initially started in Canada and the people whose like count was hidden had the feature enabled by default. However, they did have the option of showing likes publically too and they could always see their own like-count themselves.

For those unaware, the new Instagram feature hides the public like counts on photos and videos that appear in a user’s Feed, on the web and even on their profiles. At the time of the announcement, the company had said that it wants its followers to “focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.”

We should mention that this is a rather bold move on Instagram’s part as likes have now become a default way of evaluating a user’s posts. Basically the more the number of likes a post has, the more impressive it is considered. This may give a boost to some people’s self-esteem, it may bring down others’ who don’t have as massive a following on the photo-sharing platform. For instance, if someone posts a picture on Instagram and it gets no likes, most likely they would end up feeling terrible about it.

By removing like counts, Instagram is in a way sending out a message to users to post what they actually want to, and not posts that will get them more number of likes on the platform.

As of now, people do all sorts of things to get likes on the photo-sharing app.

A number of micro-influencers on Instagram post photos that are doctored or share content that has too much nudity just to get some extra likes on the app. While these posts may manage to get more likes, this doesn’t make them any more interesting.

If the company plans to bring this feature out of the testing phase to the stable version of the app, it may be looking to put an end to content like this.

Needless to say, this step will also make people post only the content that they actually want to share with their followers and not anything for the sake of more likes on Instagram.

FaceApp is blocking some users in India: Report

0

The photo editing app that has suddenly gained a lot of popularity – FaceApp– that became popular among users for its age filter seems to be blocking some users in India. At present, the app is still available on Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store for download, but then, when users try to open the app, it shows an error. The FaceApp block was first reported by a user on Twitter and others agreed that they faced the issue too.

While accessing FaceApp, Android device users from India are being acquainted with an error message that will be displayed on their screens. The message reads error “Something went wrong, Please try again”. On the other hand, the iOS users who are trying to use the photo editing App will be addressed with an unexplained error message that says “ApiRequestError error 6 – Operation couldn’t be completed”. Many users have reported glitch across various social media platforms.

FaceApp comes with some very interesting features.  With the support of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the app applies various filters on the user’s face and these include the old-age filter. This has made the photo editing app as number one free app on Apple’s App Store and at number 3 on Google’s Play Store. In addition to this, the app has a special filter that has the ability to convert a non-smiling picture to a smiling picture. Just like the old age filter, the app also comes with a feature where it can make the user look younger. Another filter on the app lets the user experiment with their looks by changing their hairstyles.

photo editing app FaceApp blocks Indian users

Despite its controversial points in its terms and conditions, the app seems to be gaining popularity among the users. One of its conditions reads, “You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform, and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you”

Notably, FaceApp is one of a kind app that comes with terms and conditions that are hard to find among other social media platforms and applications. This, not the first time when the FaceApp has been seen involved in such a controversy. In the past, the app was criticized for facilitating users to change their ethnicity. After huge controversy and criticism, the app had to take down the controversial filter that was specially developed to change the skin tone as well as the facial features of the user to match an assured ethnicity.

Samsung’s One UI 2.0 to come with Digital Wellbeing features: Report

South Korean technology giant Samsung is reportedly releasing the One UI 2.0 update with the rollout of Android Q for its Galaxy smartphones this year. The report also added that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S11 smartphone that is scheduled to be launched next year, will run One UI 2.1. The company initially gave the first look at its One UI interface last year at its developer conference. The company started rolling it out as a firmware update with Android 9.0 Pie and Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy Note 9 were the first devices to get it. One UI received appreciation from consumers and critics alike.

According to a report that surfaced online on SamMobile, the next version of the user interface will come with all the Digital Wellbeing improvements that have been announced by Google at its I/O developer conference in May this year. We should mention that one of the most talked-about features among these is the Focus Mode that enables users to specify which apps are the most distracting. The apps that the user mentions get silenced on their own when the feature is enabled.

Some other core features of Android Q are also expected to be added to Samsung‘s One UI version 2.0.

As of now, there is no word on when exactly the company intends to roll out the update. But then, the company has a great track record of keeping its smartphones updated. So, the Android Q update should also be rolled out soon.

But then, we should point out that Samsung is all set to launch its next handset – Galaxy Note 10 – on August 7. This is sooner than the official rollout of Android Q operating system. So, the Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Plus are not expected to be launched with the latest Android operating system. The devices that are actually expected to come with One UI 2.0 based on Android Q are Samsung Galaxy S11 smartphones that will be launched in the first half of 2020.

This year, Samsung is expected to launch two Galaxy Note handsets instead of unveiling just one like it usually does. 5G variants of both Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy Note 10 Plus are also expected to be unveiled by the company. The smartphones are said to come with a hole-punch design on their displays. However, unlike Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphones, the cut-out will be placed in the centre and not the side.

10 things to do to deal with your slow internet connection

Do you have a slow internet connection? It may be very frustrating for you to live with it in this day and age. Here, we have listed down 10 things that you can do to deal with your slow internet connection. Take a look:

Check your internet plan

At times, the internet connection is slow because the plan that you are paying for isn’t right. To check if this indeed is the case, log on to your provider’s website or just give them a call. You can also head over to fast.com in order to run a speed test. If what you measure is close to what you are paying for, it just means that your network is working perfectly fine and you need to either upgrade or troubleshoot the issue.

Check the hardware

The most basic step would be to give your router a quick reset. Doing this may help you fix the connection. Another thing that you need to see is if the problem is only with one computer in your house or all of them. If the latter is the case, then it is definitely with your internet connection or router or modem. Once your router is fixed or replaced, your internet connection will be back to normal.

Some must-know Wi-Fi tricks

If your router and internet are working fine, and the problem is with your Wi-Fi, that may lead to a slow speed too. Here are a few tricks that will help you fix your Wi-Fi connection just by repositioning it or tweaking a few settings.

Turn off apps that eat up too much of data

Over 2,000 dangerous apps have been found on Google Play Store

If you cannot spot a problem with the hardware or the Wi-Fi connection, it may be one of the programs running on your system that may be causing a problem. For instance, whenever we download files using BitTorrent, regular web browsing becomes slower than usual. If possible, turn off the download for such programs to have an uninterrupted connection.

Try using a new DNS server

laptop 1

Sometimes, the issue may be the DNS on the system that you are using. You can try different DNS to look up and translate website addresses into a computer-friendly IP address. However, if the problem is not in your DNS, then you would not find too much of an improvement by using a new one.

Optimize the internet for a slow internet connection

If you have to browse the internet while troubleshooting, you need to make a few changes in the way you are using it. Use the mobile or HTML versions of your favourite websites and make sure you have images disabled. You can also set up a secondary browser on your system for a situation like this and it is bound to help you.

Prioritize your tasks

laptop 2

Categorize the tasks that you need to do in bandwidth-heavy and bandwidth-light ones. Do the light ones when your connection is slow and the heavy ones when you have faster access. Also, don’t use your browser for tasks that can be done without it.

Get in touch with your internet service provider

Another thing that you must do is call your ISP and ensure that the problem is not from their end. Don’t automatically assume that something is wrong at their end. Tell them about the problem that you are facing and they may be able to help you with it.

Change your internet service provider

In case your ISP cannot help you, you should look for a new provider. If you live in a city, you would have no problem looking for one. But then, it’s always better to ask someone who has already availed the services of a particular provider to be sure if it’s worth your time.

Avoid unnecessary tasks

facebook website

If your internet connection is slow, make sure that you are only focussing on tasks that matter. Avoid checking Facebook and watching videos on YouTube. Use your connection well.

OnePlus 7: Android 9 Pie skinned with OxygenOS

Starting Price

Redmi K20 Pro: Rs 27,999

OnePlus 7: Rs 32,999

Our Take

While the set of specifications that are offered by Redmi K20 Pro looks better on paper and its cost is an added benefit, we should also mention that like all other Xiaomi devices, it runs MIUI. Xiaomi’s own UI is baked on top of Android 9.0 Pie. This means that the Redmi K20 Pro, like all other devices with MIUI, will come with a lot of ads and bloatware.

OnePlus 7, on the other hand, may lag behind in terms of specifications on paper, but it will offer you a much smoother experience because OxygenOS does not have too much bloatware. In addition to this, the company is known for rolling out quick updates to its devices to make them better.

If the budget is not a constraint for you, we recommend the OnePlus 7.
