Facebook now executes its plan to label state-controlled media outlets

0
In order to bring more transparency to its users for understanding who’s behind the news they see on Facebook, the Mark Zuckerberg-owned social networking giant has executed its plan to label media outlets that are wholly or partially under the editorial control of their respective government. In an official blog post, Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy at Facebook, said, “We’re providing greater transparency into these publishers because they combine the influence of a media organization with the strategic backing of a state, and we believe people should know if the news they read is coming from a publication that may be under the influence of a government.” Moreover, Facebook will also start labelling ads from state-controlled media outlets later this year to ensure the users that it’s equally transparent when it comes to paid content. “State-controlled media outlets rarely advertise in the US. Nevertheless, later this summer we will begin blocking ads from these outlets in the US out of an abundance of caution to provide an extra layer of protection against various types of foreign influence in the public debate ahead of the November 2020 election in the US,” the social-networking giant added. According to Facebook, “The labels will appear globally in the Ad Library Page view, on Pages, and in the Page Transparency section.” In the US, the label will also start to appear on posts in News Feed over the course of the next week. Facebook consulted nearly 65 experts from the field of media, governance as well as human rights and development to understand the degrees to which governments exert editorial control over media entities. “We know that governments continue to use funding mechanisms to control media, but this alone doesn’t tell the full story. That’s why our definition of state-controlled media extends beyond just assessing financial control or ownership and includes an assessment of editorial control exerted by a government,” added Gleicher. On the basis of these consultations and research, Facebook formed its own policy criteria to determine whether a publisher is wholly or partially under the editorial control of a government. Facebook stated that it will not apply the label if it determines that there are enough protections in place to ensure editorial independence. Besides this, the social-networking platform added that it also consider country-specific factors, including press freedom and we consult open-source research conducted by academics and leading experts. In case an organization believes that Facebook has applied the label in error, they can submit an appeal. Through the appeal, they can provide additional documentation, which we will review against our definition. The experience has been made available on the Amazon seller website as well as on the mobile app. Besides this, Amazon also provides Seller Support Services and Seller University videos and tutorials in Hindi. As businesses are trying to emerge from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to explore new opportunities for growth, Gopal Pillai, VP Seller Services at Amazon India, said, “As we look at enabling more and more of Indian MSMEs to embrace ecommerce to grow, we continue to double down our efforts on vernacular, voice and video powered initiatives. The launch of the vernacular registration and account management experience for sellers starting with Hindi is a step in that direction.” During the six-months testing phase, thousands of Amazon sellers from Tier 1, 2 and 3 cities across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Punjab, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh have switched to the Hindi experience to manage their accounts. During the testing phase, for the first time new sellers from markets like Darbhanga in Bihar, Barmer in Rajasthan, Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh, Hailakandi in Assam and Bardhaman in West Bengal signed up on the Amazon.in marketplace. On the Seller App, the language can be changed through the language drop-down on the bottom left corner while registering and through the App ‘Settings’ menu. Once the language is changed, sellers can view all pages and workflows in Hindi. Amazon India is leaving no stone unturned to expand the eCommerce opportunity to both customers and businesses in the areas of Vernacular, Voice and Video-enabled initiatives for the past few years. Amazon Prime Video makes titles available in Hindi, English, Marathi, Tamil, Malayalam, Gujarati, Telugu, Kannada, Punjabi and Bengali in addition to English. Know why Google scrapped ‘Remove China Apps’, ‘Mitron’ from Play Store

0
After taking down Remove China Apps and Mitron along with other apps from Google Play Store, the tech giant has finally clarified its action by stating that its digital media store has been designed to provide a safe and secure experience for its consumers while also giving developers the platform and tools they need to build sustainable businesses. According to Sameer Samat, Vice President, Android and Google Play, “A number of recent app removals received particular attention in India and we wanted to clarify our actions. We recently suspended a number of apps for violating the policy that we don’t allow an app that encourages or incentivizes users into removing or disabling third-party apps or modifying device settings or features unless it is part of a verifiable security service.” Without naming the app, Samat also added, “Earlier this week, we removed a video app for a number of technical policy violations. We have an established process of working with developers to help them fix issues and resubmit their apps.  We’ve given this developer some guidance and once they’ve addressed the issue the app can go back up on Play.” Stressing upon its longstanding rule designed to ensure a healthy, competitive environment where developers can succeed based upon design and innovation, an official blogpost by Google stated, “When apps are allowed to specifically target other apps, it can lead to behaviour that we believe is not in the best interest of our community of developers and consumers. We’ve enforced this policy against other apps in many countries consistently in the past – just as we did here.” Hoping that this would help clarify the rationale behind these recent actions, Google thanked its developers for all the amazing work they do and our consumers for their continued support in helping to create a safe and secure mobile app ecosystem. The anti-China sentiments in India spurred after engineer-turned-reformer Sonam Wangchuk made an appeal to the citizens of Indian to boycott Chinese products and “stop virtually financing the current military bullying in Ladakh and the South China Sea.” According to Wangchuk, “If we citizens are clever we should use our wallet power rather than leaving it totally to our armies to respond with their bullets. The bullet response is what China is looking for as it helps unite its angry citizens to forgive the mistakes and forget the economic hardships caused by the regime’s poor handling of COVID 19.” For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. COVID-19 crisis: This AI system knows why you can’t concentrate on work

0
In a latest research published in journal IEEE Internet of Things, computer scientists at Autralia’s RMIT University have developed a way to measure staff comfort and concentration in flexible working spaces using artificial intelligence (AI). People around world have been working from home ever since the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with coronavirus restrictions beginning to ease in some parts of the world and employers planning the return to office-based work, a new sensor-based system developed by RMIT and Arup can offer insights on how to get the best out of these flexible working spaces. The RMIT team behind the study are experts in using AI to uncover patterns in human behaviour. In order to carry out the research, they worked with psychologists to identify several key variables for concentration and comfort levels in work environments, then set about measuring these with sensors. With an aim to develop and test the new AI-driven system, the researcher at RMIT University worked with global design and engineering firm Arup over four weeks on 31 staff in two of the company’s activity-based working offices. According to study lead author and Research Fellow in RMIT University’s School of Science Dr Mohammad Saiedur Rahaman: “Data was collected on noise levels, indoor temperature and air quality, humidity, air pressure, and even electromagnetic fields. We used that information along with survey data to train machine learning algorithms that could identify patterns in perceived concentration and activity, and then provided solutions for making these spaces work best for people.” Asserting that recent technological developments and the proliferation of pervasive technologies had opened up many opportunities to collect data from various sensors and smart devices, study leader from RMIT’s School of Science Flora Salim, who is an associate professor, said, “Despite the myriad applications harnessing this data for smart decision-making systems, this is the first research we’re aware of that has used pervasive sensing passively to measure workers perceived concentration levels while they are at work.” The RMIT researchers discovered that the staff was generally supportive of their activity-based working setup. However, data identified that different people concentrated better in different zones, as well as other important insights for managing staff in the space. Like many people had a favourite working spot and found concentrating more difficult if they weren’t able to sit there. Apart from this, workers were also more sensitive to the office temperature not being exactly right if they missed out on their favourite seat. Regardless of where they sat, office temperature was a major factor in how comfortable and focused people were, noticed the researchers. Most found temperatures below 22.5C too cold to fully concentrate and, as the day progressed, it was observed that people became increasingly sensitive to this. A major influence on perceived concentration in the mornings, unsurprisingly, was sleep quality the night before. “We see this type of system having the potential to eventually be used to enable informed decision-making regarding workplace design and layout, or even to suggest to people when to take breaks, what zone might suit them best and so on,” Rahaman said. Arup engineer and project partner, Shaw Kudo, said beyond the useful insights on their own office, they also saw it as an opportunity to help the wider property industry. “Modern offices, new and existing, are likely to undergo change and potentially redesign workplaces post COVID-19. The valuable findings from this work can feed into future designs and allow Arup to better service our clients as they plan their future workplace – whether this is a new-build, or a return to the office after COVID-19.’ For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Life after lockdown: The new technological revolution post lockdown

What will life be like when India lifts the lockdown? Can we imagine everything around us to get back to normal? Will we be the same person or an evolved person? The past two months as the entire world is in quarantine looked around for new ways to survive, words or phrases that have become common, are like “social distancing”, “Work from home”, “Contactless Delivery”.  And, as we take uncertain steps into a not-so-brave new world after lockdown, another term will perhaps get even more commonplace: The “new normal”. The word “digitalization” will play a vital role in keeping our lives progressive and demanding. The emerging digital platforms are now essential for any business or individual wishing to survive this pandemic. Undoubtedly, lockdown is more of a challenge and made our lives uncomfortable and complicated. However, there has been a silver lining to the entire situation. Organisations have turned on their thinking caps and innovate multiple solutions which are leading our lives with new norms.  I believe that while dealing with this entire pandemic, technology and the internet have rescued us when it is compared to previous epidemics and disastrous circumstances. Moving forward, as our lives are struggling to adjust into a new normal, below are some of the digital areas which will continue to leave its impact even after the lockdown gets lifted: Boom in Gaming: Due to Covid-19 and the nationwide lockdown, online gaming career has seen a surge. People with more free time are indulging into gaming on their laptops or PCs to keep themselves engaged. In India, there are casual games and e-sports which are really keeping the buzz alive. More people find it easier to escape to the virtual world and find gaming as the perfect way to spend time at home. Omnichannel experience: Omni-channel caters to a multichannel approach developed for customers and business.  It is an innovative technology solution that integrates the online and offline properties to provide a seamless experience to the customers. This approach helps to connect business and customers by personalizing the delivery and maintaining social distancing in mind in this lockdown. Extensive digitization: The new age interactive tools are playing the potential role in defining the connectivity among the employees and businesses. While we all are working from home, interactive tools such as video conferencing apps, audio bridge, interactive voice response platforms have taken a front seat and working best to keep each other well connected during social distancing and shelter-in-place protocols. Adoption of new-age technologies like Robot Process Automation, Artificial Intelligence: Major digital transformation using Artificial Intelligence and Robotics are extremely accelerating amid the COVID-19 pandemic and these new technologies are playing a huge role in helping companies expand their competitive advantage. Many workplaces are upgrading their business models with plans on leveraging automation and bots which are seeking benefits of minimizing close human contact. E-learning trend: As coronavirus continues to spread across, it is quite noticeable that we will have to continue to maintain social distancing. In this scenario, many of the educational institutes will continue to set up seamless integration of technology in the present Indian education system, which is one of the most diverse and largest in the world is already on a fast track mode to take classes online to minimize disruptions. Various corporates introduced upskilling and e-learning courses on their online platforms. Online education will continue to see the rise and give access to learning to a much wider audience than before The demand of Telemedicine/Online consultation: During the lockdown, many governments, hospitals, e-pharmacies and even corporations have adopted telemedicine and teleconsultations in their employee wellness strategies. The surge in teleconsultations helped the long-pending telemedicine guidelines which were finally issued by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in collaboration with other industry bodies. Post lockdown, we would see this to continue. A telemedicine/teleconsultation visit can be conducted without exposing staff to viruses/infections in the times of such outbreaks. In addition, there is a trend of humanoid robots in hospitals that will help doctors and nurses to deliver medicines to patients. This lockdown may have made us retreat into a bubble, but it is more of digitised bubble—from online learning courses to video medical consultations to video calls, conference calls, webinars to virtual parties. I believe, digitalization has helped us find new and progressive ways to live our lives in these difficult times. Thus, we must identify what is changing around us and bend ourselves towards a resilient approach which is pertinent for us to grow. Change is the only constant in this new turning world, and we must be digitally native, nimble and data-driven. It will be uncertain to say whether the “new normal” be just a bump along the way or a path-changing reality. So, are you ready for the “new normal”, it brings along? COVID-19 crisis: Fitbit launches a low-cost emergency ventilator

Fitbit has now announced it has developed a high-quality, low-cost, easy-to-use emergency ventilator called Fitbit Flow, which has obtained Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to be used during the COVID-19 public health emergency. Releasing the global need for ventilators, Fitbit applied its deep in-house expertise in advanced sensor development and hardware design to quickly create Fitbit Flow an automatic resuscitator inspired by the MIT E-Vent Design Toolbox and based on specifications for Rapidly Manufactured Ventilation Systems. During the development and testing phase, Fitbit consulted with Oregon Health & Science University emergency medicine clinicians caring for COVID-19 patients at OHSU Hospital and worked with the MassGeneralBrigham Center for COVID Innovation working group on the design to meet the needs of practitioners. Asserting that the COVID-19 has challenged all of mankind to push the boundaries of innovation and creativity to more rapidly develop products that support patients, James Park, co-founder and CEO of Fitbit, said, “We saw an opportunity to rally our expertise in advanced sensor development, manufacturing, and our global supply chain to address the critical and ongoing need for ventilators and help make a difference in the global fight against this virus.” Built on standard resuscitator bags with sophisticated instruments, sensors, and alarms that work together to support automated compressions and patient monitoring, Fitbit Flow is designed to potentially reduce the strain on specialized staff who are typically needed to operate a commercial ventilator. Other similar emergency ventilators vary in the combination of features they offer, but Fitbit believes that none delivers all of the attributes of its device at the same lower price range. Emphasising how critical it is to develop solutions that can help ensure health systems have the equipment they need to treat COVID-19 illness, David Sheridan,MD, MCR, Assistant Professor of Pediatric Emergency Medicine and Co-Director of Emergency Clinical Innovation Oregon Health & Science University, said, “Fitbit Flow is a great example of the incredible innovation that emerges when academia and industry employ problem-based innovation to respond quickly to an important need. COVID-19 is a new illness and we still have much to learn about the progression, treatment, and potential recurrence of this disease.” With an aim to supply these devices to health care systems around the world that do not have a sufficient number of traditional commercial ventilators. Fitbit Flow is designed to be used only when a traditional commercial ventilator is not available. Besides this, Fitbit is in talks with state and federal agencies to understand current domestic needs for emergency ventilators both today and ahead of any future waves of the virus. Google shows solidarity with the Black community

0
On 31st May, Google and YouTube homepages had shared the US-based tech giant’s support for racial equality in solidarity with the Black community and in memory of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and others who don’t have a voice. Asserting that for those feeling grief, anger, sadness and fear, Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google and Alphabet, said, “You are not alone.” Later in an email sent by Sundar Pichai to Google employees, the CEO of Google and Alphabet said, “I realize that nothing about this week feels like business as usual—and it shouldn’t. Our Black community is hurting, and many of us are searching for ways to stand up for what we believe, and reach out to people we love to show solidarity.” In an 8-minute-and-46-second moment of silence at 1 p.m. PDT on June 3 (which translated to 1:30 a.m. IST on June 4), Pichai along with Googlers stood together to honour the memories of Black lives lost. Mind you! The length of the moment of silence represents the amount of time George Floyd suffered before he was killed. It’s meant to serve as a visceral reminder of the injustice inflicted on Floyd and many others like him. With this, Pichai said that he wanted to provide space for all to come together as a community. Pichai further added that Google acknowledges that racism and violence may look different in different parts of the world. Therefore, coming together as a community and showing support is important, but it isn’t enough. However, the 48-year-old also announced a few initial commitments to meet the urgency of the moment. According to the email sent by Sundar Pichai to Google employees, “We’ll be giving $12 million in funding to organizations working to address racial inequities. Our first grants of $1 million each will go to our long-term partners at the Center for Policing Equity and the Equal Justice Initiative. And we’ll be providing technical support through our Google.org Fellows program. This builds on the $32 million we have donated to racial justice over the past five years. We’ll also offer $25 million in Ad Grants to help organizations fighting racial injustice provide critical information.” Moreover, Pichai also shared that Googlers have also contributed an additional $2.5 million in donations as a result of last week’s internal giving campaign that Google is matching. This represents the largest Googler giving campaign in the company’s history, with both the largest amount raised by employees and the broadest participation. Asserting that the events of the past few weeks reflect deep structural challenges, Pichai stated that Google will work closely with the Black community to develop initiatives and product ideas that support long-term solutions. As part of this effort, the tech giant also welcome your ideas on how to use its products and technology to improve access and opportunity. Now Facebook has introduced another important update allowing users to delete their old posts, which they do not like or find embarrassing. Facebook has announced that soon the Manage Activity feature will be available for the users to blot out their old post, which they now regret posting then.  While announcing the feature the company said, “Whether you’re entering the job market after college or moving on from an old relationship, we know things change in people’s lives, and we want to make it easy for you to curate your presence on Facebook to more accurately reflect who you are today. That’s why we’re launching Manage Activity to help you archive or trash old posts, all in one place.” You can easily find this particular option inside the “Go to Activity log” option. After which you can easily filter out your old posts according to category, date and people. For instance, you could archive a post you made when you were in high school that you still find amusing but that you’d rather not be seen by anyone else on Facebook.  According to the company, the archive feature is for the content you no longer want others to see on Facebook, but that you still want to keep for yourself. This feature also allows you to move your posts you no longer want to the trash. Those posts which you have a mode to trash will be available till 30 days before being deleted or else you can manually choose to delete or restore them before then, in case you change your mind about deleting old posts.  The Manage activity feature on Facebook allows you to manage your lots of old posts without having to take the pain of scrolling down to the end to delete a particular or lot of posts in bulk. This filter allows you to view and sort out the old post you have been looking for such as posts with specific people or from a specific date range. According to the company, it will be initially available on mobile as well as Facebook Lite application. “Updated on June 2, 2020, at 1:52 PM PT to clarify that Manage Activity is available on Facebook Lite today.” the company stated. The feature will be rolled out later for the desktop platform confirmed by the company.
