As people are spending more time on their mobile phones and laptops to stay connected during the Coronavirus pandemic, cybercriminals are utilising this period to carry out phishing attempts. A Brand Phishing Report for Q1 2020 by Check Point Research (CPR) has revealed that Apple was the most imitated brand, rising from 7th place in Q4 of 2019 to the top spot.
According to the research by CPR, “This was due in part to the anticipated launch of the new Apple Watch, with criminals exploiting the online buzz to launch several credential theft attempts.”
As web phishing was the most prominent vector with 59%, Netflix came on second spot after Apple reaching the top position. PayPal and eBay were on 3rd and 4th spot, respectively.
Furthermore, in Q1 Mobile Phishing was the second most common attack vector compared to Q4 of 2019 where it ranked in third place. This may be due to the Coronavirus pandemic which has caused people to rely more on their mobile phones for information and work.
In Mobile Phishing, the top position was retained by Netflix followed by Apple, WhatsApp and Chase. These brands have gained popularity due to an increase in the number of people working from home as a result of the Coronavirus. The researchers showed that in February, an attacker was trying to imitate Netflix services using fraudulent domain (netflix-pagos\.com).
In February again, analysts at CPR noticed that a URL, mail\.whatsapp\.vvipx9\.com/login.php, is presenting a fraudulent WhatsApp web login page in Indonesian language requesting Facebook credentials in order to connect.
Besides this, during this quarter Counter Point team also noticed dozens of detections of fraudulent websites trying to imitate login pages of banks. According to the report, “Such websites, as the one below, is trying to steal Chase Bank login credentials and listed under the address chasecovid19s\.com/home/myaccount/access\.php which was first active in March 2020 and registered under the IP – 23.229.221.103, located in United States.”
Asserting that phishing continues to be a key weapon in cyber-criminals’ arsenals to try and trick users, researchers at Check Point said that the total number of brand phishing detections remains stable compared to the last quarter of 2019.
In order to avoid falling victim to these scam attempts, the report by Counter Point Research revealed that one should verify if they are using or ordering from an authentic website. One should refrain from clicking on promotional links in emails, and instead Google your desired retailer and click the link from the Google results page. For instance: An 80% discount on the new iPhone is usually not a reliable or trustworthy purchase opportunity.

The Social media app Facebook has come up with a new feature on its platform called ‘Quiet Mode’. Last week the company released this feature for the iOS users. It allows them to mute most of the push notifications where people are constantly getting buzzed, which is quite annoying at times. We have to accept the fact that Facebook has become a habit now and is quite addictive. So, to cut down that habit and to manage the screen time, the platform has introduced the Quiet Mode feature. This mode will allow you to take a break from the app for a small duration of time. You can schedule a time duration so that you can switch off the notifications when you don’t want to receive them. When the mode is turned on you won’t receive a single notification and ultimately you won’t be able to open the app to check notifications. Mistakenly if you open the app when the Quiet mode is turned on, it will reflect a reminder on your screen telling you that the mode is turned on. Also, it will show remaining time left when the mode is turned off, but you can manually bypass the system for a duration of 15 minutes. In addition to this, the users will be able to keep a watch on their usage for a period of two weeks. Also, Facebook has added shortcuts to Notification settings and news feed preference.Facebook in its blog post said, “As we all adjust to new routines and staying home, setting boundaries for how you spend your time online can be helpful. Whether it’s to help you focus on your family and friends, sleep without distraction or manage how you spend your time at home, we have tools that can help you find the right balance for how you use Facebook. We added Quiet Mode, which mutes most push notifications, and if you try to open Facebook while in Quiet Mode, you’ll be reminded that you set this time aside to limit your time in the app. We also added shortcuts to Notification Settings and News Feed Preferences, so you can make the most of your time on Facebook by controlling the type of posts you see in your News Feed as well as the updates you receive.”Before rolling out this feature to Android users, the company released the feature for its iOS platform last week. Quite mode can be found under the Settings & Privacy section

Recently, even crysis.com has started flashing a new image of military protagonist hinting that Crysis could take a new avatar to launch its shooters again into the gaming world. A PC Gamer report revealed that the CryEngine Showcase video that was released by Crytek in March was all about a small clip of what seems to be remastered Crysis gameplay. While celebrating 10 years of their achievements, CryEngine shared a video that demonstrates how the engine has evolved over the years, celebrates landmark releases from indie and AAA developers, and features teams using the engine’s power to make some of the most interesting, engaging, and beautiful contemporary games. The list included Crysis 2 and Crysis 3.
Developed by German developer Crytek and published by Electronic Arts , Crysis is a first-person shooter video game series. The series revolves around a group of military protagonists with “nanosuits”, technologically advanced suits of armor that allow them to gain enhanced physical strength, speed, defense, and cloaking abilities. The protagonists face off against hostile North Korean soldiers, heavily armed mercenaries, and a race of technologically advanced aliens known as the Ceph, who arrived on Earth millions of years ago and have recently been awakened. The series consists of three main installments, a standalone spinoff of the first game with a separate multiplayer title, and a compilation.
Besides this, Crytek invited developers to experience the power of CryEngine on mobile first by registering for a beta program at cryengine.com/beta. The beta program will launch later this year. CryEngine is the cutting-edge 3D game development platform famed for its industry-leading renderer, real-time lighting, and optimized VR support, and Crytek has collaborated with Google to bring the engine to the Android ecosystem.
“The CryEngine team is dedicated to helping game makers achieve their vision by putting the most powerful tools in the industry at their fingertips. We’re proud that teams of all sizes, all around the world, choose our game development platform, and by participating in the beta program, developers will get to experience what CryEngine can achieve on mobile chipsets, as well as participate in the development of the new Android pipeline,” said Theodor Mader, Technical Director for CryEngine.
