YouTube Music now lets users switch between songs and their music videos with just a tap

YouTube is said to be one among the best acquisitions that have been made by Google so far. After seeing immense success with the video platform, Google launched YouTube Music and YouTube Premium in 2018, both of which made their way to India in March this year. While YouTube Premium only enhances the regular YouTube experience, YouTube Music competes with the likes of Spotify, Gaana, Wynk, JioSaavn and more.

Now, the company has introduced a new feature in YouTube Music that enables users to switch between listening to a song to watching the video of that song without facing any interruptions. If the video of the song that you are listening to is available on the platform, you will get two buttons – ‘Song’ and ‘Video’.

So, if you are listening to a song and wish to watch its video, you can click on the ‘Video‘ button. To go back to only listening to music, you can press the ‘Song’ button again. You would start seeing the song’s cover art instead of the music video then. This lets users switch between the two without any hiccups or pauses.

What makes it even better is that it is time-matched. So, if you are in the middle of a song and you switch to watching its video, the video will play from the exact same point and you wouldn’t have to see it from the beginning. In addition to this, you can also just go to the Settings of YouTube Music and turn off the music video option by pressing on the toggle that says, ‘don’t play music videos.’

According to YouTube, it has matched over 5 million music videos to songs in order to get this feature running. We should mention that YouTube is already the platform where one can find most of the official music videos, and this feature is definitely going to beneficial.

With this new feature, users will be able to get a look at songs’ music videos without having to conduct a separate search for it. The option to toggle between music and videos will be available to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium users starting today itself.

It is also worth noticing that YouTube Music has got some other improvements recently. Its Offline Mixtape feature now automatically downloads hundreds of songs when it is enabled. Another feature now integrates the service’s free tier into Google Home smart speakers.

Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones review: Great inexpensive sound

Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones were launched in India a little while ago and they fall in the inexpensive wireless headset’s category. We tested these over the ear headphone to see what makes the fat lady sing in them. To our amazement, the sound is not bad at all. Read the rest of our review to know more.

In This Article

Design

Adcom is an Indian company that has been manufacturing goods in China and selling them in India. One such product from their stable is Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones. Which for the price segment are well-made. They do not look flimsy, neither has the company used slapdash plastic. At least not on the headband or ear cups. The only place we thought they could have done better was the buttons.

Talking about which, the right ear cup is where all the buttons and ports are placed. These include power on/off, play/pause, volume up/next track, volume down/previous track and an M/EQ buttons. With these, there is a microSD card slot, a 3.5mm audio port and a micro USB charging port available on it as well.Adcom Luminosa

Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones also have RGB LED lights on both the ear cups too, which can be turned on or off by long-pressing the play button. This conserves the battery. A Bluetooth LED indicator is also given on the right ear cup band. For comfort, there is enough cushioning on the headsets. Starting from the headband that has a rubberised air pad on it. The ear plates have foam pads, which do manage to cut down the ambient noise to quite an extent (passively).

USB Charging cable and a not-so-long 3.5mm audio cable are also supplied in the box. The headphones are flexible and have metal hinges. These extend the headsets for each head type and also collapses the ear cups for easy storage. These can turn up to 180 degrees inwards.

Performance

Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones shine when it comes to resonance. We were not expecting the kind of beats it can produce. The high and lows are very audible, but what really takes the cake is the deep base. We played some of our best tunes from Spotify (Hollywood and Bollywood) and the headphones delivered great sound.

Setting them up is child’s play and they quickly connect using Bluetooth 4.2. Just turn them on, search for them on the mobile, pair and you are all set. The Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones take about 2 hours to fully charge using a standard USB charger, which sadly is not part of the box. After charging fully we got about 4 hours of music playback from the 400 mAh battery, with LED RGB lights turned on. Adding to the show, the RGB LED’s light up the ring and Adcom branding on both the earpieces.

The Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones support playback from a microSD card as well. A card of up to 256GB is supported. However, one has to be a bit careful to insert it in the slot, as the slot is not the easiest to operate. Users can also pick calls when connected with a smartphone (Android or iOS). The play button can be used for the same. A mic is placed on the right band and the call quality via the Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones is not bad either.Adcom

The Bluetooth range for these headphones is 20 meters (as the company states). For us these worked well till about 15 meters and walls do not hamper the reception much. We were able to access the buttons on the headset with ease and found their placement to be quite decent. So how does one operate the tracks and volume on the Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones? It’s pretty simple, the play button doubles up as the pause button and call button. The volume buttons if single pressed go to next or previous tracks. If long pressed then volume increases or decreases.

Verdict

For our final words, we do not mind the good sound the Adcom Luminosa wireless headphones threw at us. At Rs 1,490 these are definitely worthy. We for one wanted better-built MicroSD card port and buttons on these headphones. The sound with 3.5mm aux cable improves a bit, but the length of the cord fell short. All in all, if you are looking for good to great wireless sound in a budget and a warranty period of 1 year, these headphones will not disappoint you.

Xiaomi India’s MD Manu Jain explains why Redmi K20 Pro is high priced

0

On Wednesday, Chinese technology brand Xiaomi introduced the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro smartphones in India. Both the Redmi K series smartphones feature a triple rear camera setup and run Android 9.0 Pie. The company had launched smartphones in China in May this year.

Xiaomi fans in India were eagerly waiting for the smartphones India because of their powerful features and specifications. The fact that Xiaomi’s smartphones are usually priced affordable was another factor that led to the anticipation. Prior to its launch in India, it was expected that the Redmi K series smartphones may come with a similar tag as the devices launched in China. But then, many were disappointed as Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro were priced higher than other handsets from the company.

Redmi K20 has been launched in two storage options in the country. While its 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant is priced at Rs 21,999, and the 6GB RAM/128GB storage is available at Rs 23,999.

Coming to Redmi K20, its 6GB RAM/128GB storage variant holds a price tag of Rs 27,999 whereas the 8GB RAM/256GB storage has been priced at Rs 30,999. Both the K series handsets are available in three colour options – Flame Red, Glacier Blue, and Carbon Black colour options.

Talking about the pricing of the new smartphones, Xiaomi India’s MD Manu Kumar Jain released an open letter explaining why their price is higher than expected. Jain stated that Redmi K20 and K20 Pro come with features and specifications that only premium smartphones boast of. He also added that at this price point, both the smartphones come with a glass back that other expensive smartphones don’t. Jain said “But if you also compare it [Redmi K20] with everything else, other phones are plastic — this is the only phone in this segment with a glass back — I’m talking about the K20, not the K20 Pro. A lot of such features that no other phone has.”

K20 Redmi

Explaining further, he said, “Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 and 730 are the latest processors, which are much more expensive than its predecessors (845 and 710). Please note, latest technology gets cheaper with time; we could have used older generation processor to save money or we could have waited for 6 months for component costs to go down, and hence further reduce the price of Redmi K20. But that would’ve gone against our philosophy of bringing the latest innovation to you.”

He also spoke about why there is a difference between the prices of the Chinese and Indian variants.  He clarified that the In China the K20 Pro comes with 6GB along with 64GB storage while the one that has been launched in India comes with heavy storage that is 6GB RAM with 128GB onboard storage.

In addition to this, he said, “We are proud to manufacture these flagship devices in India, with nearly 65% of the value of the smartphone being locally sourced. The remaining 35% has to be imported leading to higher taxes for complicated components. This leads to a small pricing difference, e.g., there is only 3% difference between the top-end variant (8GB+256GB) pricing between India and China. We could have reduced prices by using cheaper materials like plastic or by compromising on quality, but we chose not to do it.”

Flappy Bird is back in this new battle royale avatar: Key details about the game

When we talk about mobile games that saw an extremely high level of popularity, it is not even possible to not include Flappy Bird. The game was explosively popular and scores of people across the globe were completely addicted to it. But then, have you ever wondered what the game would have been like if it were more like Fortnite? Sounds interesting, right? That’s the exact idea behind Flappy Royale, which is a new game that has been developed by Orta Therox and Em Lazer-Walker. Zach Gage has also contributed to it.

The new game brings together the gameplay of Flappy Bird and the survival of the last player (or bird, in this case) from the battle royale genre that has gained tremendous popularity lately. The gameplay has been kept simple and it is quite close to the original game. Players need to tap on birds to flap and dodge their way through some pipes. But the difference between Flappy Royale and Flappy Birds is that the aim is not to survive as long as you can. Instead, you need to survive till the end and be the player that outlives all the other 99, who will also be flapping with you in real-time. Needless to say, like any other battle royale, everybody starts the game at the same time.

We should mention that this is very similar to Mario Royale, that was released recently. Mario Royale also follows the ‘How long can you survive?’ gameplay model and has stages from the real game.

The new Flappy Royale game also comes with some options of customization so that your bird stands out from the rest of the flock. But then, it is worth noticing that this is another thing that it has borrowed from Fortnite. The game also has a ‘Daily Trial’ mode that has a preset course. Players can try this for up to 10 times to get a spot on the worldwide leaderboard.

Till now, the Flappy Royale game was available on smartphones as an open beta. However, Therox has announced today that the game is now out on Android as well as iOS. One also has the option of playing it on the web.

According to Therox, the game was played 10 million times during the beta testing period that lasted three weeks. At its peak, 30 simultaneous games were being played. On an average, 20% of all the games did not even make it past the first pipe. Therox has also added that if one makes it out of the third pipe in any match, they have already bested around two-thirds of the lobby.

Samsung Galaxy A10s to have dual rear cameras, 4,000mAh battery: Report

South Korean technology giant Samsung has been on a launching spree this year. It has unveiled a number of devices from its Galaxy A and Galaxy M series to take back the top slot from Xiaomi in the budget segment of the Indian market. If we talk about the Galaxy A series, Samsung Galaxy A10 was the most affordable in the entire range. Now, the company seems to be expanding its portfolio with the Samsung Galaxy A10s smartphone. While we have already heard about the upcoming handset, more details regarding it have now surfaced online.

A new report has surfaced online that gives some information about the camera setup of the upcoming device and suggests that it will be powered by a different processor. The device appeared on the FCC listing last month and at that time, it was revealed that Samsung Galaxy A10s will sport a dual rear camera setup. Now, popular tipster Ishan Agarwal has taken to Twitter to talk further about the cameras of the upcoming device. According to him, Samsung Galaxy A10s will come with a 13MP sensor and a 2MP sensor on its back panel.

For selfies and video calls, Samsung Galaxy A10s is expected to feature an 8MP camera. If this is true, it will definitely be an upgrade over the Samsung Galaxy A10 that comes with a 5MP sensor on its front panel. Samsung Galaxy A10e also has the same sensor for selfies. In the tweet, Agarwal has also pointed out that the smartphone will come with a 4,000mAh battery. However, we should mention that the FCC listing said that the handset comes with a 3,900mAh battery. This is another upgrade as Samsung Galaxy A10 packs a 3,400mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy A10s is said to come with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and it is powered by an octa-core processor. The processor on the device is expected to be MediaTek Helio P22 SoC and not Exynos 7884 chipset.

It is also worth mentioning that the handset has received certification from Wi-Fi Alliance and Bluetooth SIG, and this means that the launch of the smartphone is not exactly too far.

To recall, Samsung Galaxy A10 features a 6.2-inch HD+ (720 x 1520 pixels) screen and is powered by an octa-core Exynos 7884 SoC. The smartphone comes with 2GB of RAM and it packs a 3,400mAh battery. As we mentioned earlier, it comes with a single 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera.

2020 iPhones to come with a 3D ToF sensor: Report

0

Reports about upcoming iPhones start circulating online way prior to their launch. For instance, we don’t only have rumours about the 2019 iPhones pouring in, but even the ones about the 2020 models of iPhone. According to a report, the 2020 model of the iPhone may come up with the time of flight 3D sensor in its rear camera setup.

The report, that first surfaced in Digitimes, says that Apple is preparing to bring into play Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser (VCSEL) and time of flight (ToF) sensors on the back panel of the anticipated 2020 iPhone model. The new module will be identical to the current iPhone model that comes up with TrueDepth camera setup on the front.

By putting a 3D sensor on its rear camera, the company will enable the user to capture a more detailed picture with the help of AR-based applications.

According to a previous report by Ming-Chi Kuo, who is a popular Apple analyst, the upcoming model of the iPad model will be introduced with time-of-flight 3D rear cameras.

By the use of Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser(VCSEL), 3D sensors will add depth to the images and improve the picture quality. At the moment, there are a number of smartphones that use 3D sensing in their devices. Apples’ iPhone 8 comes with a lower power Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser whereas Xiaomi Mi8 has the VCSEL technology. Apart from smartphones, this technology is integrated into a number of other applications that also including computer mice, automotive LiDAR systems and data communications.

The people who are unaware of VCSEL, it basically is a semiconductor that produces infrared beam and is mainly used to enable AR-based applications and range finding.

2019 iPhone XR battery

Apart from that, the company is also rumoured to announce four new ranges of smartphones next year that will also include LCD display similar to iPhone XR. In 2020 Apple is planning to launch a new model that could feature a smaller notch display. However, in 2021 it is even expected to eliminate the display notch.

All the reports are merely rumours about the upcoming iPhone so you can take it with a pinch of salt. All the speculations about the rumoured 2020 model of iPhone may change before its official launch.

Sony Xperia 1R to be the world’s first 5K display smartphone: Report

Japanese electronics company Sony may not be the most popular name in the smartphone industry anymore and is not even competing with the major players in the Indian market. However, that does not mean that Sony smartphones are not available in other markets. The most recent launch from the company is Sony Xperia 1 and that sports a 4K-resolution OLED screen with an aspect ratio of 21:9. Now, a new report has surfaced online that suggests that the company is planning to launch its Sony Xperia 1R smartphone that will come with a 5K resolution display.

According to a leaked user-agent (UA) profile for the upcoming device that was first published by Japanese website Sumahoinfo, shows that the resolution of the Sony Xperia 1R will be 5040×2160 pixels. This means that the upcoming handset will be the first-ever to come with a 5K resolution. The smartphone was earlier believed to be Xperia 2, but more recent reports suggest that it will be called as Sony Xperia 1R. The device is expected to launch at IFA 2019 and will have the model number J8220.

While there is no confirmation about the size of the screen of the Sony Xperia 1R yet, according to GSMArea, it could sport a 6.5-inch display at the very least. This has been deduced from the fact that Sony Xperia 1 sports 6.5-inch 4K screen. This means that the pixel density of the device will be 899ppi, and that further indicated that the smartphone will come with an aspect ratio of 21:9, much like Sony Xperia 1.

Sony xperia 5K phone

We should mention that a 5K or even a 4K screen may not be too necessary for anyone who has an ordinary usage and actually proves to be worthwhile when one runs a VR-based application on their device. It is worth pointing out that Sony is definitely pushing the boundaries of screen resolution on its smartphones even though it has lost its standing in the industry. Recently, the company even withdrew from India and other markets in an attempt to make its business profitable.

Sony’s decision was announced at the company’s corporate strategy meeting for the fiscal year 2019 that was held in Tokyo, Japan. The company also announced that Japan, Europe, Taiwan and Hong Kong are its major ‘focus regions’ for the smartphone business. On the other hand, the non-focus or defocused countries include Africa, Australia, Canada, India, Mexico, and the Middle East.

Google has removed seven Russian apps from Play Store

Google has removed a number of apps from its Play Store this year. Mostly, the company says that the apps have been removed because of spam, adware or due to some kind of privacy concerns. The California-based technology giant has done the same again and removed seven Russian apps from its Play Store because they accessed users’ location without giving them any prior notice about the same. Anti-virus software company Avast reported these ‘spying’ apps to Google and the company was prompt to remove them so that they don’t continue to affect users.

According to Avast, all these apps were made by a Russia-based developer and combined, they had been installed 1,30,000 times. The most installed app among these was Spy Tracker and SMS Tracker and both of them had more than 50,000 installs.

Here are the ‘spying’ apps that have been removed by Google Play Store:

  • Track Employees Check Work Phone Online Spy Free
  • Spy Kids Tracker
  • Phone Cell Tracker
  • Mobile Tracking
  • Spy Tracker
  • SMS Tracker
  • Employee Work Spy

How exactly these apps worked?

The stalker had to download the app on his own smartphone and then gain access to the device of the target. Once the target downloaded the app and entered their email ID and password, it started sending all the information to the stalker’s handset. The victim did not even see an icon that signified that the app downloaded was malicious in nature and hence, did not bother to uninstall it. With these apps, the stalker could get information of victims like their location, contacts, SMS and call history and more.

Google has removed seven Russian apps from Play Store

Speaking about it, Nikolaos Chrysaidoes, head of mobile threat intelligence and security at Avast said, “These apps are highly unethical and problematic for people’s privacy and shouldn’t be on the Google Play Store. They promote criminal behavior, and can be abused by employers, stalkers or abusive partners to spy on their victims. We classify such apps as stalkerware, and using apklab.io we can identify such apps quickly, and collaborate with Google to get them removed.”

As we mentioned earlier, this is not the first time this year that Google has removed apps from its Play Store. The company has started its Play Project that is meant to keep malicious and adware kind of apps off Google’s Play Store. Google has faced a lot of flak because it had a lot of malicious apps on its Play Store, so this year it has ramped up its efforts to get rid of them.

Netflix is rolling out a cheaper mobile-only plan for India

0

Popular video-streaming service Netflix has announced that it will be launching a new and more affordable mobile-only plan for India. With this new plan, Netflix eyes to compete with other video streaming platforms in India like Amazon’s Prime Video and Hotstar.

In March this year, the video streaming platform was seen testing its mobile-only subscription plan in India. The new plan will that costs half of its basic plan. At the moment, its monthly plan starts at Rs 500 and on the other hand, the mobile-only plan that it is set to launch will be priced at Rs 250 per month.

In India, Disney owned Hotstar charges Rs 365 annually from its subscribers. Hotstar also offers content from AT&T’s HBO and streams live sports by paying Rs 299 monthly. On the other hand, Amazon charges Rs 999 annually from its customers for its Amazon Prime paid service that also includes Prime Videos. As one can see, these companies are offering relatively more affordable plans than Netflix. So, to compete with its other rivals, Netflix will be bringing the plan with a much lower price to succeed in India. At the moment, Netflix is offering it is offering three monthly plans that can cost between Rs 500 to Rs 800. So instead of paying monthly for the service, the customers will have an option to go with the plans that are being offered by other video streaming platforms that let them avail services for an entire year at a similar price.

Netflix, in a letter to its shareholders, said, “After several months of testing, we’ve decided to roll out a lower-priced mobile-screen plan in India to complement our existing plans. We believe this plan, which will launch in Q3, will be an effective way to introduce a larger number of people in India to Netflix and to further expand our business in a market where Pay-TV ARPU is low (below $5). We will continue to learn more after the launch of this plan.”

We should add here that Netflix’s announcement was a part of its quarterly results and the company has reported lower-than-expected growth in the number of subscribers. India will be playing an important role in CEO Reed Hastings’ plans for global expansion. To woo the audience in India, Netflix is investing a fair share of money in creating blockbuster shows like Sacred Games with celebrities from Bollywood. The second season of the show is all set to release on August 15.

Speaking on this, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos said, “We’ve been seeing nice steady increases in engagement with our Indian viewers that we think we can keep building on. Growth in that country is a marathon, so we’re in it for the long haul.”

Instagram expands its test to hide like counts to six more countries

At Facebook’s Annual Develop Conference F8, Instagram announced that it will be testing a new feature that will hide users’ public like counts from their posts. Today, the company has announced that it will be expanding its hidden like count test to six more countries including Ireland, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Australia, and New Zealand. The test was initially started in Canada and the people whose like count was hidden had the feature enabled by default. However, they did have the option of showing likes publically too and they could always see their own like-count themselves.

For those unaware, the new Instagram feature hides the public like counts on photos and videos that appear in a user’s Feed, on the web and even on their profiles. At the time of the announcement, the company had said that it wants its followers to “focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.”

We should mention that this is a rather bold move on Instagram’s part as likes have now become a default way of evaluating a user’s posts. Basically the more the number of likes a post has, the more impressive it is considered. This may give a boost to some people’s self-esteem, it may bring down others’ who don’t have as massive a following on the photo-sharing platform. For instance, if someone posts a picture on Instagram and it gets no likes, most likely they would end up feeling terrible about it.

By removing like counts, Instagram is in a way sending out a message to users to post what they actually want to, and not posts that will get them more number of likes on the platform.

As of now, people do all sorts of things to get likes on the photo-sharing app.

A number of micro-influencers on Instagram post photos that are doctored or share content that has too much nudity just to get some extra likes on the app. While these posts may manage to get more likes, this doesn’t make them any more interesting.

If the company plans to bring this feature out of the testing phase to the stable version of the app, it may be looking to put an end to content like this.

Needless to say, this step will also make people post only the content that they actually want to share with their followers and not anything for the sake of more likes on Instagram.

0

The photo editing app that has suddenly gained a lot of popularity – FaceApp– that became popular among users for its age filter seems to be blocking some users in India. At present, the app is still available on Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store for download, but then, when users try to open the app, it shows an error. The FaceApp block was first reported by a user on Twitter and others agreed that they faced the issue too.

While accessing FaceApp, Android device users from India are being acquainted with an error message that will be displayed on their screens. The message reads error “Something went wrong, Please try again”. On the other hand, the iOS users who are trying to use the photo editing App will be addressed with an unexplained error message that says “ApiRequestError error 6 – Operation couldn’t be completed”. Many users have reported glitch across various social media platforms.

FaceApp comes with some very interesting features.  With the support of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the app applies various filters on the user’s face and these include the old-age filter. This has made the photo editing app as number one free app on Apple’s App Store and at number 3 on Google’s Play Store. In addition to this, the app has a special filter that has the ability to convert a non-smiling picture to a smiling picture. Just like the old age filter, the app also comes with a feature where it can make the user look younger. Another filter on the app lets the user experiment with their looks by changing their hairstyles.

Despite its controversial points in its terms and conditions, the app seems to be gaining popularity among the users. One of its conditions reads, “You grant FaceApp a perpetual, irrevocable, nonexclusive, royalty-free, worldwide, fully-paid, transferable sub-licensable license to use, reproduce, modify, adapt, publish, translate, create derivative works from, distribute, publicly perform, and display your User Content and any name, username or likeness provided in connection with your User Content in all media formats and channels now known or later developed, without compensation to you”

Notably, FaceApp is one of a kind app that comes with terms and conditions that are hard to find among other social media platforms and applications. This, not the first time when the FaceApp has been seen involved in such a controversy. In the past, the app was criticized for facilitating users to change their ethnicity. After huge controversy and criticism, the app had to take down the controversial filter that was specially developed to change the skin tone as well as the facial features of the user to match an assured ethnicity.
