LG has expanded its product portfolio with the launch of LG Max. The new LG Max is the latest offering from the company, which is available in three colour variations. These consist of white, gold and titan. And we quite likes the titan version. LG Max smartphone has a spin hairline pattern that accentuates the metallic edge and a multi-layered back panel. The grooved circular pattern creates a unique visual effect on the rear cover, while improving grip and texture. Mr. Amit Gujral, Marketing head, LG Mobiles India, said, “Most of the people who use internet on smartphones use 3G services as 4G is still at a nascent stage in our country. Keeping this in mind, LG has launched LG Max as we are sure that this smartphone will offer unprecedented value to 3G consumers. This smartphone offers great balance of form, function and price and we expect it to be even more successful than its predecessor.” The LG Max features a 5-inch FWVGA (854 x 480) display. The smartphone offers dual Sim functionality and runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop operating system. Powering the smartphone is a 1.3GHz Quad-Core processor paired with 1GB of RAM. The inbuilt storage of the device accounts to 8GB, which can be expanded further via a microSD card. The smartphone flaunts an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel front facing camera to facilitate video calling. The LG Max comes with LG’s proprietary features like Gesture Shot and Selfie Flash that make it easy to capture great selfies. The Smartphone offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, A-GPS and USB 2.0 as connectivity options and houses a 2,540 mAh battery. The company has priced the new LG Max at Rs 10,990. Microsoft Windows 10 is right around the corner, here’s what to expect

We have been eager to get our hands on the full version of Microsoft Windows 10 and on July 29, it will be available to the world for free (mostly). Yes, if you have a legit version of Windows 7 or 8 installed on your PC, laptop or tablet, then you would be able to upgrade to the new version of the most popular PC operating system of all time for free. We are eager to see some of the new and hot features on the new operating system. That just might bring Windows back in to the game and fetch glory back to the IT giant. Well, we do think if Microsoft plays it right they can again extend their lead over Apple, Google and other operating system providers like they once did. So what are the features one would be able to see in the upcoming PC operating system? Here is the list.
  • Start button makes a comeback: Windows 8 failed miserably amongst the masses as it was a brand new OS. Most things were changed and the basic essence of a Windows OS was missing. Major problem? There was no start button on it. Microsoft Windows 10 will bring back the start button and menu system that will show live tiles on it as well.
  • Hello Cortana: the virtual assistant comes to life on the OS and one can ask her just about anything. She is here to serve and one can use her to search items on the web, book a table or simply to know more about the Windows 10 OS. Sadly, it would not be available in India right away. But, the trials will be on and one can see her coming to your Indian PC screens very soon. Probably within this year.
  • Edge Browser: here is a feature that we have been reading about a lot and what reports tell us is that this is the most powerful web browser by Microsoft till date. The browser should be cross platform ready and one can easily use it to browse and read content on it. It should be light on the resources as well.
  • Appy next: the basic idea behind creating Windows 10 seems to be cross platform/screen existence and collaboration. Mails, galleries, music and other apps should be able to run across all Windows 10 platforms. So that you are always connected to the documents and files at all times. One drive should play an important role here for cloud storage. This is something what Apple has already done with its OS and now is the turn of Microsoft Windows.
  • Gaming Delight: good news for gamers. Microsoft Windows 10 would get the Xbox app on it. This will enable multi-player games to be played across devices and screens. Gamers can play multi-player games with each other no matter on what platform they are playing on. PC players can play games with Xbox gamers and vice-versa.
  • Faster boot times: this is something Microsoft has not been able to do with most of its OS’s. And this is something that Apple excels at. The Windows OS load time has been quite off for most of its versions. However, with Microsoft Windows 10 the users might get faster boot up and quick app load times.

Google patents a way to search a video archive of your real-life experiences

Some of the reports indicate that Google now has a patent for indexing videos of your real-life experiences and making them searchable via a device like say Google Glass. Users would be able to record video through a wearable computer and store it remotely for a later search. A report on Quartz says that in the patent, the wearable device (Google Class) would send its video to a user’s paired phone, which would in turn send the video to a server, where it would be stored. A user can use keywords to search specific instances they want to re-watch. One can then search the video at a later date vie the online database. On how the search will work, the patent reads, “the method may also include transmitting a query of the user to the server computer system to initiate a search of the history or real-world experiences, and receiving results relevant to the query that include data indicative of the media data in the history of real-world experiences.” The patent notes, “When the user is determined to be within a popular location, preference manager may automatically turn on media capture without intervention of a user. In another embodiment, preferences manager, may be set to continuously or periodically capture media data for a specific interval of time.” The media capturing device could automatically be turned on at popular locations, notes the patent. According to the patent, a popular location, would be one where other users have captured media data as well. Let’s wait and watch, how this technology will be used in the coming days.

InFocus M350 Review: A nice budget smartphone with 2GB RAM

InFocus mobiles are a popular smartphone brand in South India. They are slowly trying to capture a piece of the pie up north as well. We have seen few good devices by them in the past and one of their most recent launches is the M350 android smartphone. They passed one unit to us to run through our test bench and this is what we found out about this nifty little device. Design The InFocus M350 is available in white, black and golden colours. We received the black unit for review and quite liked it’s built. The phone’s black back panel is grippy and one can hold the phone nicely. A silver metal trim runs around the sides of the phone, which adds to the show. The InFocus M350 has a 5-inch display. This HD IPS capacitive display comes with 16 million colours. This mobile is 10.6mm thick and weighs 146g. Which might seem a little heavy on papers, but we did not mind the bulk at all. It is very comfortable to use, even with just one hand. Under the rear removable plastic panel, there is a non-removable battery, two Micro SIM card slots and a Micro SD card slot. The power button is located on the right side of the phone while the volume key is located on the left. The USB port is located at the bottom of the phone and the 3.5mm headset jack is positioned at the top of the mobile phone. The speaker vent is situated on the back’s lower part. The primary camera is on the top right (rear) of the mobile phone, which comes with the LED flash. Performance The InFocus M350 has a 1.5GHz Quad-Core processor that comes with 2GB of RAM. Together they try to make the applications and services run as smoothly as possible. The users also get 16GB of internal memory (12GB available) to store files. And there is also the option to add up to a 64GB microSD card to amass additional documents. All this runs on the MediaTek MT6732 chipset that is 64-bit capable. For graphics a Mali-T760 MP2 GPU is also on board. There is also HTML5 for browsing. The primary camera of INFocus M350 comes with auto focus function and can capture 8-megapixel still images. For selfies, there is also an 8-megapixel secondary camera. The rear and front camera captures very decent pictures, but it struggles a bit in low light. Macro shots on the other hand were quite good. The phone did not break a sweat when we played power hungry apps and mid-end games on it. But, when it comes to graphic hungry games the phone lagged a bit. Also, the game loudspeaker volume could have been better. Talking about which, we faced no problems when it came to audio and call quality on the InFocus M350. Screen, image and video quality is also above average and we quite liked what we saw. Coming to its battery life, the InFocus M350 has 2,500 mAh non-removable battery inside. It worked for 17 hours straight after a full charge (under nominal use).  We tested the phone with Quadrant and it managed to score 9,872 points, which is a nice score for this mobile phone that falls in the mid-segment of smartphones. Verdict The InFocus M350 has some great features in it. This mobile phone has an impressive display and the mobile screen is smudge resistant. It comes preloaded with MeituPic, Dropbox, WPS Office, Facebook apps etc. The experience was quite smooth throughout. Only if instead of the Android 4.4.4 KitKat, the company would have given Android 5 Lollipop, the deal would have been drool-worthy. One can get this smartphone for Rs 7,999 at any online retail store. Pros
  • Quite affordable
  • Call quality is pretty clear
  • Distinctive design
Cons
  • Underpowered rear speaker
  • Average battery life
  • Non-removable battery
  • Old OS
