Asus 5Z receives a new software update with May 2019 security patch

0

Asus 5Z was launched last year in July 2018, with a 6.2-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display. If you have no recollection of the smartphone, we should tell you it is the Asus ZenFone 5Z, but because of the trademark issues regarding the ‘ZenFone’ branding, it is now being referred to as the Asus 5Z. Asus has announced that the smartphone has started receiving a software update with May 2019 security patch. The update promises enhancements in various departments like security, sound, and system optimizations. The company has also revealed that it has updated the system along with under the hood optimizations.

Speaking about the bug fixes and enhancements, Asus has revealed that the new update improves the sound quality on Asus 5Z.  Asus is likely to roll out the update in an incremental manner.

The company will monitor all of its online channels for complaints about problems for any potential hidden bugs. So, the update will reach a small percentage of users in the beginning, and if it does not have any bugs, then a broader rollout will begin.

To recall specifications, the smartphone was launched with a 6.2-inch FHD+ IPS LCD display that comes with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9 and a notch. The device is powered by Snapdragon 845 SoC and comes with up to 8GB RAM and up to 256GB internal storage. The smartphone comes up with a dual rear camera setup with a 12MP primary sensor and an 8MP sensor with an ultra-wide lens.  Dual-LED dual-tone flash on the back of the device was also added and an 8MP sensor is present on the front for selfies. The Asus 5Z houses a 3,300mAh battery and runs Android 9 Pie.

As previously mentioned, the company has been issued an order by the Delhi High Court regarding selling and advertising smartphones and accessories under the ‘Zen’ trademark, Zenfone or any other trademark that is identical to it. This move has also forced the company to rename its future flagship smartphone to Asus 6Z in India. However, the supply of Asus smartphones, notebooks, and other products, as well as technical support and after-sales service for all Asus products remain unaffected for all consumers.

According to the company, the Asus 6Z will be coming to India on June 19, 2019, and it is expected to be priced around Rs 30,000 to Rs 40,000.

The smartphone will come with a 6.4-inch Full-HD+ (1,080 x 2,340 pixels) display with an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. This is powered by Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 855 SoC paired with Adreno 640 GPU. It packs a huge 5,000mAh battery with Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging support. The Asus 6z has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage and comes with the support of microSD card of up to 2TB. Over that, it will run Android 9 Pie skinned with Zen UI.

How to Create Multiple Partitions on a USB-Drive in Windows 10?

USB devices are one of the most portable and useful devices in the tech world today. They are not just good for transferring or storing files but they can be used in a variety of ways.

It does the work of hard disk drives, but unlike them, they aren’t bulky and are wireless.

However, the USB drives come in single partitions only and there are no multiple partitions in the USB drives which can be used for a number of things.

With multiple partitions on the USB drives, you can make it into a Bootable drive which can be used to install a new OS to any PC or laptop without needing the CD/ DVD of the OS.

Here we are listing down the ways by which you can make partitions in a USB drive.

To make a partition to a USB drive you need to use the Disk Management Tool in Windows.

Here are the ways by which you can use the Disk Management tool to create the partition in a USB drive:

Steps to make a partition to a USB drive in Win-10

  1. Insert the USB drive to your PC. Then open the Windows Search and type ‘diskmgmnt.msc’. Click Enter. After that, select theDisk Management from the list of options.
  2. Select the USB drive which you need to partition and then right-click on it. Then select ‘Shrink Volume’.
  3. Once the next window opens, you can see the total size of the disk and space which can be shrunk. Here, enter the amount of space you want to shrink (in MBs) and then click on ‘Shrink’.
  4. Once that is done, you can see the ‘Unallocated Space’. Right-click on it and then select ‘New Simple Volume’.
  5. After that, you will be taken to the Simple Volume Wizard where the minimum and the maximum size will be shown. Then you can choose the volume you want.
  6. Assign a drive letter or a path for the USB drive.
  7. After that, you will be taken to ‘Format Partition’. Here, choose ‘NFTS’ and then click on ‘Next’.
  8. Once it is done, you will be taken to the final phase of the partition creation which tells you that you have successfully completed the New Volume Simple Wizard. Once there, click on ‘Finish’ to complete the setup.
  9. Once it is done, you will have to make a partition to your USB drive which can be used to store a Bootable OS.

YouTube rolls out a new notification system to its platform

0

YouTube is the biggest video sharing platforms in the world right now and millions of videos are uploaded to the platform every day. The videos can be anything, from funny videos to game/movie trailers to song videos to vlogs. Once the video is uploaded, the platform gives the user the option to customize the settings of his video. And it is because of this that the platform constantly updates its settings, rules and regulations. YouTube has now been updated once again as the notifications are automatically set to become personalized. This means that not every subscriber will get the same video delivered to their inbox.

The change was announced by the product team of YouTube through a blog post. With the new change, if the users want to receive notifications, they would have to click on ‘Subscribe’ and then hit the golden bell icon. Once this is done, users need to make sure the notifications are enabled on their account. If the user doesn’t hit the golden bell icon, then they might not receive all the video notifications from the creator. But the subscribed videos will still show up in the subscriptions tab.

The new change comes after the developers saw that the subscribers were getting overwhelmed by the number of notifications they were getting if they had subscribed to multiple channels. So, the users stopped the notifications completely. According to the product team of YouTube, the new notification change will make the users easier to understand. With the new change, the users can decide what they want to receive the notification about and they can even opt out from it.

“Through a series of tests and user research, we’ve found this updated name and visual design improves overall understanding of the default bell setting and makes it more clear that you won’t be notified about every new video upload,” the blog post reads.

Even the creators asked YouTube through Twitter to make certain changes to the YouTube’s notification system. They said that once the video goes live, the first wave of viewers was very important to their channel and for generating the advertising revenue.

James, a member of YouTube’s notifications team, said in a video about the product change, “Sometimes we’ve dropped notifications and we haven’t delivered them, and that’s on us. If you’re sending billions of these things to billions of users, even a small percentage gains can affect a lot of people.”

The notification change was basically aimed at the subscribers of the platform but the creators of YouTube are also getting something in it. YouTube is coming out with a new metrics that the YouTubers can use to better understand how many subscribers are getting their notifications. While another metrics will show the creators how many subscribers have signed up to receive all notifications but they might not have their notifications enabled on their account.

The new notification system and the product change of YouTube is currently being rolled out to the platform. People are having mixed reactions to the change, some are appreciating the transparency while others are saying that the notification system is too complicated.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s doctored video will not be removed from Instagram

As part of the promotion for his project “Spectre”, British artist Bill Posters posted some video shows to Instagram. The video says that “We’re increasing transparency on ads,” to make it look like it’s part of a news segment.

The video, created by artists Bill Posters and Daniel Howe in partnership with advertising company Canny, shows Mark Zuckerberg sitting at a desk in front of a camera, apparently giving a disturbing speech about Facebook’s power. “Imagine this for a second: One man, with total control of billions of people’s stolen data, all their secrets, their lives, their futures,” Zuckerberg’s likeness says, in the video. “I owe it all to Spectre. Spectre showed me that whoever controls the data, controls the future.” The title of the Instagram post says it’s created using CannyAI’s video dialogue replacement (VDR) technology.

Facebook did not remove the video but the company chose to de-prioritize it so that it seemed less frequently in users’ feeds and positioned the video along with third-party fact-checker information.

Out of the original seven-minute video, a 21-second portion was randomly clipped. A trained algorithm was then used on the clip and the voice, as well as facial movements of Zuckerberg, were matched in order to rebuild it. The video is effortlessly recognizable as a fake. The original video is from a September 2017 address Zuckerberg gave about Russian election interference on Facebook.

Facebook recently was targeted for refusing to block the sharing of a video of the US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi which was doctored to make her appear drunk or impaired. Pelosi requested Facebook to block the video, however, the social media giant did not delete the video, and instead, chose to de-prioritise it, so that it appeared less frequently in users’ feeds. The company also placed the video along with third-party fact-checker information.

The purpose of “Spectre” is to discuss the power of digital influencers and information online, as well as what can or cannot be believed. This deepfake video of Zuckerberg is one of many made by Canny in partnership with Posters, including ones of Kim Kardashian and Donald Trump, as part of Spectre.

The fake video of Mr Zuckerberg would receive the same treatment as the fake video of Ms Pelosi and other misinformation, said the Instagram spokesperson.

In a recent development, Instagram even announced that it will no longer only have vertical videos. The app, which was always mobile first, will now also support videos in landscape mode.

The company announced the change in a blog post saying, “We realize this is an evolution from where IGTV started — we believe it’s the right change for viewers and creators. In many ways, opening IGTV to more than just vertical videos are similar to when we opened Instagram to more than just square photos in 2015. It enabled creativity to flourish and engagement to rise — and we believe the same will happen again with IGTV.” So, the content creators will be encouraged to upload the same video that they create for YouTube on IGTV too.

Shazam app gets a new feature called Pop-up which can identify songs played through headphones

0

Shazam, the app which can identify music and movies by listening to their sounds, has gained tremendous popularity because of this feature. Now, Shazam is getting another new feature which has been introduced to the Android version of the app. This new feature is called the Pop-up Shazam, which works in a new way. The app’s new feature works with the audio which is played internally through headphones but the application will be working in the background of the smartphone.

According to XDA developers, the new feature will be very useful for social media apps like Instagram where you can use Shazam to recognize the songs or sound tracks that the other users have put in their stories. It can also work with other applications as well. The working of the Shazam app is simple – it works in the background of the smartphone and you are free to do your browsing, chatting or using social media apps. But when you hear a sound track, a song and you can’t recognize its name you can use the app to do the job. It will listen to the track and find out the details about the song or the sound track. Once the app has identified the music, it also gives the user an option by which they can play the music through Shazam itself and listen to what they were searching for.

The report further mentions that it works ‘surprisingly well if the quality is good enough’. The new feature of Shazam uses the same matching algorithms as the regular listening feature of the app. So, the working and the performance of the app is similar to that of regular use. But it should be noted that the Shazam app can be used only by users whose devices run Android (v 9.33 or above) in their smartphones. Users on iOS can currently not use the new Pop-up feature of Shazam.

It is worth noting that the Shazam app was acquired by Apple in 2018 but the new feature of the application comes first for Android rather than iOS, which is also a surprise. Currently, there is no news about when the new feature will be coming to the iOS.

The new update’s changelog of Shazam on Google Play Store reads the following:

You can now Shazam music coming through your headphones!

No need to point them at the microphone. Shazam will recognise the music that’s playing through your headphones.

Even better, if you’re listening to music in another app and want to identify the songs without leaving the app, then you can use Pop-up Shazam and get the track name and synced lyrics to sing along.

To enable Pop-up Shazam, go to the Settings page in the app. Currently, the app’s new feature is not available for Apple’s iOS but it is planning to bring it in the near future.

Huawei has postponed a laptop launch amid trade war with the US

Chinese technology brand Huawei has just postponed the launch of its new Windows laptop. The company’s CEO of the consumer division, Richard Yu, has confirmed that this to a popular news portal. We should mention that the laptop was all set to be showcased at the CES Asia Show that has been going on in Shanghai this week. However, since the company has been embroiled in a legal battle with the US government, its ability to use American products like Microsoft‘s software and Intel processors is very restricted as of now.

Speaking to CNBC, Yu said that the situation was a very “unfortunate” one and added that the laptop would have been unveiled this week. However, the company’s placement on the US Entity List has stopped it from announcing the product altogether. As of now, there is no word on whether the laptop will ever see the light of the day because it completely depends on whether Huawei remains on the blacklist or not.

We should mention that as of now, there are no technical details of the upcoming laptop in the reports that have emerged. The only detail that is available is that the new entry would have been a part of Huawei’s MateBook line. The company has also updated its well-regarded MateBook X Pro line at the Mobile World Congress that was held previously this year. IT also introduced the MateBook 13 at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2019.

According to a report in the DigiTimes that surfaced earlier this week, Huawei will be halting the production of its laptop computers. The company has maintained its silence on the matter as of now, but then, it has removed its laptops from sale on its online store.

The Chinese technology company has also suggested that it has been stockpiling components and proprietary technology, so the effect of the US government’s ban will be mitigated. The company has also suggested that its laptop business only represents a tiny sliver of its business.

But then, we should also mention that stockpiling is not a permanent solution as at some point, Huawei will run out of these stocks. Other than this, it is also worth pointing out that computers were Huawei’s biggest consumer success in the United States till now. This means that retreating them is a very visible sign of the damage that the battle with the US government has inflicted on Huawei.

Huawei Nova 5, Nova 5i to launch in China on June 21

0

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei may be embroiled in a legal battle with the US government. But this is not stopping the company from launching numerous smartphones. Yesterday, the company’s sub-brand Honor launched five smartphones and tablets in India including the Honor 20 Pro, Honor 20, Honor 20i, Honor Pad 5 (8-inch) and Honor Pad 5 (10.1-inch). Now, the company has announced that it will be launching its Huawei Nova 5 and Nova 5i smartphones.

We should mention that this doesn’t come as a surprise as a number of rumours about the smartphones have been circulating online and the devices have also made an appearance on a number of benchmarking apps and TENNA certification website. Huawei Nova 5 and Nova 5i smartphones are expected to launch in China on June 21. It is speculated that both the handsets will be launched at the same event.

Huawei Nova 5 is the successor of the Nova 4 handset and it will pack upgraded internals. The company took to Weibo to confirm that it will be launching the Huawei Nova 5i and Nova 5 smartphones.

It is worth pointing out that Huawei Nova 5i has already been leaked on certification website TENNA, and it has been stated there that the handset will sport a 6.4-inch full HD+ display. The device is expected to be powered by the company’s own Kirin 710 SoC and it will pack either 6GB or 8GB of RAM. The device is said to come with 128GB of onboard storage.

It is also worth noticing that Huawei Nova 5i’s 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM variants have been spotted on Geekbench. The smartphone will come with a quad rear camera setup that will comprise of a 24MP primary sensor, an 8MP secondary sensor, a 2MP depth sensor and a ToF camera.

The device will also house a fingerprint scanner on its back panel and come with an LED flash. The Huawei Nova 5i also houses a 3,900mAh battery and runs Android 9.0 Pie skinned with EMUI 9.

As of now, the details of the Huawei Nova 5 smartphone are unknown, but it is expected to be powered by a powerful processor. Most likely, the handset will run the Kirin 970 SoC or Kirin 980 SoC.

Huawei Nova 5 and Nova 5i smartphones will be launched in China on June 21. We should mention that there is a possibility that they would launch without any Google services.

Google’s Pixel 4 renders revealed: Here’s what it will look like

0

Google’s last Pixel smartphones were the Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL, watered down versions of its 2018 flagship Pixel 3-series. But this time, Google will be launching the next iteration in the Pixel line-up with Pixel 4. Although the release of the Pixel 4 is still months away, but the news and rumours of the next Pixel smartphone have started floating online. Google has been releasing its Pixel smartphones in October every year for three years now, and this year is not expected to be any different. Not much details have been leaked about the Pixel 4 currently, but now, a report has surfaced online that shows what the handset will look like.

According to the first leak by Pricebaba, the leak shows the render of the upcoming smartphone. The render image shows what the Pixel 4 will look like. It can be seen in the renders that there is no rear-mounted fingerprint scanner on the Pixel 4 which means it could be getting the in-screen fingerprint scanner or a side-mounted one. In addition to this, there is no speaker at the bottom of the device but it will have one on the top. The camera placement of the device is similar to the upcoming iPhone 11-series which means that the Pixel 4 will be getting the square-camera cut-out on its back. There is also a possibility that this time, Google will be incorporating more than one cameras on the back of the Pixel 4, which is something that it has not done before. So, cameras will be playing a huge part in the making of Pixel 4 as the cameras were the best selling points of the Google Pixel devices.

If the camera placement of the Pixel 4 will be like what it was shown in the renders, then there might be conflict with the iPhone as it too has the similar square camera placement. Other than that, the Pixel 4 will also reportedly come with a dual-front camera setup placed in a punch-hole display cut-out. Other than that, there will also be a ‘spectral sensor’ on top of the Pixel 4 which was earlier used in Pixel 3. Then there is another rumour which states that Google’s Project Soli which is a motion sensing technology will be incorporated in the Pixel 4 devices. The use of Project Soli’s radar will give the Pixel 4 much better motion-sensing and gesture sensing capabilities.

Since it will be the latest smartphone from Google, it will be running the newest Android Q out-of-the-box. Being a Google device, the Pixel 4 will have a better software-hardware integration. But all leaks aside, we will have to wait till October 2019 to find out more about the Pixel 4 and all its features and specifications.

Xiaomi Mi 9T, Mi 9T Pro price (expected)

If the Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro smartphones are indeed the rebranded versions of the Redmi K20 and Redmi K20 Pro respectively, their pricing will be similar too. Redmi K20 was available for purchase in three storage variants in China – 6GB RAM/64GB storage, 6GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB RAM/256GB storage. So we can expect the Mi 9T to be priced similarly.

Coming to Mi 9T Pro, its price should be similar to Redmi K20 Pro, which was launched in China in four variants – 6GB RAM/64GB storage, 6GB RAM/128GB storage, 8GB RAM/128GB storage and 8GB RAM/256GB storage. The price of Redmi K20 Pro starts at CNY 2,499 and goes up to CNY 2,999. The global price and availability of the two smartphones will be announced today. It will also come with a 20MP selfie camera on its front panel. Mi 9T Pro comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner and houses a 4,000mAh battery that has support for Quick Charge 4.0.

For imaging duties, there will be a triple rear camera setup that comes with a 48MP primary sensor, a 13MP wide angle sensor and an 8MP sensor. For selfies, there is a 20MP front-facing snapper. Samsung Galaxy Fold will be launched once again in ‘coming weeks’

0

One of the most innovative and unique smartphones of the year was the Samsung Galaxy Fold. The South Korean technology giant unveiled the smartphone back in February 2018 at the Galaxy Unpacked event where the Samsung Galaxy Fold was revealed alongside the Samsung Galaxy S10-series. But weeks after its launch, Samsung had to recall all its Samsung Galaxy Fold units. The units were recalled few days before it was to go on live sale. Although the Samsung Galaxy Fold held a steep price tag of $2,000, but some customers pre-booked the device nonetheless. But when the company sent some of its review units to YouTubers, the real issue of the Samsung Galaxy Fold came to light. When that happened, Samsung put an indefinite hold on the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. But now, months later, news is that, the South Korean tech giant is planning to launch its Galaxy Fold once again in the ‘coming weeks’, but as of now, there is no exact date announced.

According to a CNET report, a Samsung spokesperson through an email said that the announcement of the launch date of the Samsung Galaxy Fold will be made in the coming weeks. But the spokesperson didn’t reveal the exact date of the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold. But one thing is for sure that the company plans to launch the smartphone once again as it said it will do instead of abandoning it.

The official launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold was to be done in April 2019 but when it was given to the YouTube reviewers for reviews before the launch, things went wrong. As some YouTubers noted that the Samsung Galaxy Fold comes with a slight plastic coating on the top which was to be a part of the screen, but since no description was mentioned about the coating, the reviewers took away the plastic coating. That’s when the Samsung Galaxy Fold stopped working and according to Samsung the coating was a part of the screen. In the later versions, the company put a warning message to the screen asking users ‘not to remove the plastic coating’.

Reviewers also found out that the screen of the Samsung Galaxy Fold was easily damaged and it had signs of wear and tear only after a limited time of usage. The hinge of the Samsung Galaxy Fold also had some problems as it couldn’t handle much of the regular open and close cycle. Lastly, Samsung had to recall all the units of the device and putting an indefinite hold on the launch of the device.

Earlier, Samsung Mobile Chief DJ Koh said that the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold was on track and it ‘would not be too late’. Now, with the launch of the Samsung Galaxy Fold once again in news, it is expected to launch in the coming weeks or months.

Facebook’s new app Study will pay you to let it track your smartphone activity

0

Facebook and privacy don’t really fit together in the same sentence. The social media giant has again been paying people to monitor how they use their smartphones. The company is doing this using an app called Study. Using the app, Facebook will monitor which apps the user has and how much time the user spends on those apps. The app will also collect some additional data including the user’s location, some specific features they use and more. The social media giant has clarified that it would not see any specific content like messages, passwords and websites that are being visited by the user.

We should mention that Study has been launched a few months after the company’s last user-tracking research app, Facebook Research, was closed down after a string of controversies. According to a report that had surfaced online, the app was marketed to teens. The iOS versions of the app had a special certificate because of which the company felt free to circumvent the App Store and get more access to the smartphone of the user. This was a clear violation of Apple’s rules. Facebook Research was then closed down in January.

With the launch of Study, Facebook has made it clear that it still needs data on how people are using their smartphones. In addition to this, it is also easy to see that the company has learned something from the recent controversy as Study will only be available for people who are at least 18 years in age. This time, the app will only be targeted at Android users and they will be able to grant the app deeper phone access. The app also has a series of screens that explain what kind of data it will be collecting and exactly how it will use it.

Users on the app will only be verified via the age that they have mentioned on their Facebook account. In order to get payments, they would also need a PayPal account. Facebook has also mentioned that it would not be linking the data it collects from Study app to the user’s account on its platform or target ads to him/her.

However, as of now, Facebook has also not specified how much it will be paying people to use the app. But then, the company has said on its blog post that “all research participants are compensated.” The app will be launched in the United States and India. Another thing worth mentioning is that not everyone can sign up for Study. Facebook will show the ad of the app to some users and they will have to click to sign up for it.

WhatsApp adds Opi Stickers with a White-coloured bear on its app: Here’s how to use them

0

Facebook-owned messaging app WhatsApp has today expanded its sticker options by adding an Opi sticker pack that has been designed by Colombian illustrator Oscar Ospina. The pack comes with Opi stickers that feature a white-coloured bear. In different stickers, the bear expresses different emotions. It is worth noticing that the new sticker pack is now available in the Android as well as iOS versions of WhatsApp. However, it can be downloaded directly via the Stickers section of the messaging app.

To recall, WhatsApp got stickers on its platform in October 2018. Currently, it has 14 different sticker packs on its app that have been created by artists across the globe, and various others can be downloaded via Google Play Store and App Store. In addition to this, there are apps that also let users create their own stickers.

It is worth mentioning that the Opi sticker pack comes with as many as 30 stickers. Using these, WhatsApp users can “sneak, snooze and celebrate” with the loving bear. We should also point out that these stickers were made by Oscar Ospina. For those unaware, the artist also got the Opi sticker pack to Facebook Messenger in 2014.

Here’s how you can download the Opi sticker pack on WhatsApp:

  1. Open WhatsApp on your smartphone.
  2. Open the chat with any one of your contacts.
  3. Press on the emoji icon on the top left of your keyboard.
  4. Now, you will see three options on the bottom of the screen – Emoji, GIFs and Stickers (rounded square icon). Press on the Stickers icon to access Stickers.
  5. Here, you will see the sticker packs that you already have. On the top right, press on the add (+) icon.
  6. You will see the Opi Stickers on the top of all the collections.
  7. Press on the download icon next to the sticker pack.
  8. That’s all. All the stickers in the pack will now be downloaded on their own.

Going forward, you will be able to see the Opi Sticker pack among other stickers in your WhatsApp app once you do this. It is worth adding that Opi sticker is 387KB in size.

WhatsApp stickers are a great way for users to express themselves. The feature was present in most other rival apps like Telegram and Snapchat before it made its way to WhatsApp. As we mentioned earlier, you can also download stickers via other apps for WhatsApp.

Google Map is testing a new safety feature in India: Here’s everything you should know

0

Search engine giant Google is testing an “off-route” alert feature in India which will alert you if your taxi goes off route. This safety feature will help the user avoid being tricked by a cab driver while traveling to an unfamiliar part of the city. It will alert you if your taxi is driven away from the intended route by 500 meters. This year, the search giant announced new Maps features like Incognito Mode and Maps AR on Pixel devices. The company also added SOS alerts, an on-screen speedometer, and three major new features for commuters in India including live train status to help Map users in 10 of the largest cities in India to see bus travel times from live traffic and get live train status for Indian Railways. Google’s new feature is currently available only in India. It’s a very useful feature especially if you’re traveling around an unfamiliar part of a city.
