WhatsApp Payments would be rolled out in India this year, Global Head confirms

WhatsApp is all set to launch its peer-to-peer UPI based payment service in India later this year, the company’s Global Head Will Cathcart has announced today. The company had launched a test run of its payments service with one million users in the country in 2018, but could not fully roll it out because of digital payments framework guidelines. However, now the WhatsApp Payments service is in its final stage and will be made available in India soon.

Speaking about it, Cathcart said, “To boost digital inclusion in India, we can launch the (Pay) service across the country later this year after meeting regulations.”

It is worth mentioning that India’s digital payments industry is estimated to hit $1 trillion by 2023.

Niti Aayog’s CEO Amitabh Kant said that WhatsApp was delayed in meeting India’s regulatory norms and that is why it had to delay the launch of the payments service. He said, “We look forward to WhatsApp Pay in India once it fulfils all the regulatory requirements.”

We should add here that WhatsApp Pay would be able to create a huge opportunity for the MSMEs to go digital. Speaking about WhatsApp payments coming to India, Prabhu Ram, Head-Industry Intelligence Group, CyberMedia Research said to news agency IANS, ” Given the popularity and reach of Whatsapp in India, it is a given that WhatsApp Pay will make a strong dent on the payments ecosystem, and the incumbents therein.”

In April this year, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg had said that the company was working to launch the payment service in India.

WhatsApp payments would pose as a big competitor to Paytm, which is one of the most popular digital payments apps in India till now. Ram also agrees to this and he said, “WhatsApp Pay has the potential to take Paytm head on, and race to the top of the payments market in India.” He further added, “WhatsApp Pay’s entry is a very pivotal moment in India’s e-payments history. It is almost akin to the launch of WeChat Pay that transformed payments in China. Imagine being able to make payments on platforms like BookMyShow via the WhatsApp integration.”

WhatsApp Payments launch

It is worth adding that WhatsApp has a user base of over 300 million people in India, and once it gets its payments service to the country, even at the inception, the number would surpass Paytm’s user base of 230 million.

Speaking on it, Tarun Pathak, Associate Director at Counterpoint Research said, “Digital wallet payment solutions are becoming more relevant for the Indian economy driven by mobile-centric Internet penetration. WhatsApp has the potential to leverage its existing user base and become the leading payments services.”

Microsoft is removing Cortana from Xbox One with new redesign

Software giant Microsoft is making changes to the dashboard design of Xbox One again and this time, it will be removing the Cortana digital assistant from it. The company is currently experimenting with the more “streamlined user interface” for the Xbox One dashboard’s home section. It is worth noticing that this is the area that you will see when you switch on an Xbox One console.

With the new design, the dashboard will get quicker access to Xbox Game Pass titles, Microsoft’s Mixer service, Xbox community feature and the Microsoft Store. Speaking about the newly introduced changes, Bradley Rossetti, Microsoft’s Xbox Insider chief said, “We’ve heard your feedback and have continued to iterate on Home to get you into your gaming experiences faster and keeping more of your content front and center. With this new experimental Home design, the first thing you’ll notice is we’ve removed the Twists from the top of Home in favor of separate buttons that launch your gaming experiences.”

We should point out that this will make it easier for users to access frequently used games directly from the home screen of the console. The software giant is testing this new home screen with Xbox Insiders only in the Alpha and Alpha Skip Ahead rings. The company has also said that it is looking for feedback from them. It is worth noticing that Microsoft has tweaked the design of its Xbox One dashboard a few times already since the console was unveiled in attempts that are aimed at improving the user experience that it offers. A big revamp was done in 2015 and the Fluent Design update was introduced in 2017.

Xbox one console

Apart from the latest Home update, the company is also removing Cortana from the Xbox One. The software giant has said that it is moving closer to cloud-based assistants, so you no longer be able to “talk to Cortana via your headset.” But then, the company has also added that users will be able to power on an Xbox One gaming console via Xbox Skill for Cortana on iOS, Android or Windows and it will be similar to the existing Alexa integration.

We should add that it is not surprising to see that Cortana is going away from the Xbox One. The company also has a new focus for Cortana in scenarios that are more business-related. Microsoft is also working to make Cortana better at conversations. Prior to this, Microsoft also decoupled Cortana and Search in the Windows May 2019 update that was released recently. After that, it was reported that Cortana will be added as a separate app on the Microsoft Store.

Samsung Galaxy Fold issues have been fixed, to launch in September

The wait for Samsung Galaxy Fold is finally coming to an end. After postponing the launch of its foldable smartphone for months, Samsung has said that it has redesigned the handset to address all the issues in it and will now be launching it in September this year.

We should mention that the South Korean technology giant was one among the first companies to announce its foldable smartphone. However, when the company sent some units of Galaxy Fold to reviewers and YouTubers in the United States, several issues were discovered. The most prominent one among these was that the display of some units of the device cracked.

In a blog post, the company has said, “Earlier this year, we announced Galaxy Fold—Samsung’s first foldable device, and the beginning of an entirely new mobile category. Since then, we’ve made improvements to the Galaxy Fold to ensure consumers have the best possible experience.”

While Samsung has announced that it has fixed the issues with Galaxy Fold and will be launching it in September, it is yet to announce a specific date for the same. Speaking about the changes it has made, the company has said, “Samsung has taken the time to fully evaluate the product design, make necessary improvements and run rigorous tests to validate the changes we made.”

According to Samsung’s blog post, the improvements made in Galaxy Fold include:

  • The top protective layer of the Infinity Flex Display has been extended beyond the bezel, making it apparent that it is an integral part of the display structure and not meant to be removed.
  • Galaxy Fold features additional reinforcements to better protect the device from external particles while maintaining its signature foldable experience:
  • The top and bottom of the hinge area have been strengthened with newly added protection caps.
  • Additional metal layers underneath the Infinity Flex Display have been included to reinforce the protection of the display.
  • The space between the hinge and body of Galaxy Fold has been reduced.

Samsung Galaxy Fold launch

Samsung has also added that it “has also been continuously working to improve the overall Galaxy Fold user experience, including optimizing more apps and services for its unique foldable UX.”

The company, however, has specified that the handset will only be launching in a few markets initially. But then, before the Samsung Galaxy Fold controversy happened, the company’s CEO DJ Koh had said that the smartphone will be launched in India too. But then, we can’t say whether that will happen in September along with other countries which will get it during the first wave.

Google launches Gallery Go app to help you organizes photos offline

0

Google has a number of popular apps that have grown to become very useful for most Android users. The latest one to join Google’s list of apps is Gallery Go. The latest app launched by Google works without having the need for exorbitant data or storage. The company has introduced the Google Go app at the ‘Google for Nigeria’ event. The latest app launched by Google – Gallery Go – has now been made available on the company’s own Play Store.

The new app is available for all the devices that run Android version 8.1 (Oreo) or higher. While unveiling the app, the company said that initially, some features such as organizing photos on the basis of people in them will only be accessible to a select number of markets. In addition to this, the search giant is also planning to launch a new Bolo reading-tutor app in Ghana and Nigeria.

In its official blog post, Google has revealed that the Gallery Go is a photo gallery app that has been designed in a way that it makes use of machine learning to automatically put user’s images in order. The app also helps the new smartphone owners find, edit, and manage photos effortlessly without requiring high-speed internet or cloud backup to access their pictures in devices.

Gallery Go, without human intervention, will be able to systematize the user’s photos on the basis of people in them and the picture of a particular article. This will make it easier for the user to easily search their favourite photos or selfies, and keep track of their essential documents. The user will not have to manually label their photos without using their data to access all the features. The users will also be able to create folders so as to sort out their photos. Gallery Go also has support for the SD cards so that the user can easily copy their images into their phones.

In addition to this, the app comes with some amazing editing tools that can beautify any images on the user’s device with just a few taps. With the use of an auto-enhance feature, the user can easily edit their photos in Google Photos to enhance or fix their images. The users can also choose from a various range of filters available within the app to get a new look.

The software company has specially designed the Gallery Go so that it can be accessed offline. It uses very little data so that the user can easily manage their pictures. The app only occupies the 10MB of space in the smartphone.

In a blog post, the company said: “For those of you who joined us at Google for Nigeria, Gallery Go will come pre-installed as the gallery app on the Itel S15 and select A55 devices beginning next month.”

Google Photos now has 1 billion users across the globe

1

Google Photos is one of the apps by the technology company that have seen tremendous popularity among users. While Android users have been depending on it for years now, slowly the popularity of the app has also spread to those who use iPhones. According to a report, Google Photos app has now reached one billion users, just after over four years of its initial announcement.

The report about the latest number of the users of the app had first surfaced on Fast Company. We should mention that the photo application is the ninth service by Google to achieve this milestone. Other services by the technology giant that have already achieved this number include Android, YouTube, Gmail, Google Search and Google Maps. But then, what makes it different is the fact that Google Photos took lesser time to hit the mile stone as compared to others.

Google Photos has been enjoying a lot of popularity since its inception. Five months after it was launched at Google I/O 2015, the app had reported to cross over 100 million users. It did not stop there. Google Photos even hit the 500 million user mark just after two years of its launch.

While Google Photos is one among the apps that are included in most Android smartphones as a part of the suite of apps by the technology giant. However, this nowhere guaranteed its success. We should also point out that Google Photos was initially spinoff from Google+, which was a not-so-successful attempt by the company to compete with social media giant Facebook.

According to Fast Company, after becoming a separate app, Google Photos offered some of the best underlying technology of the social media platform by Google and it was preferred by users because it did not have the less popular features of Google+.

Google is bringing ‘Express backup’ and ‘Data Cap’ feature to Google Photos

But the company does not wish to stop even here with the popular app. To achieve the 2 billion user mark, Google has today launched Gallery Go, which is basically a lightweight alternative to the main app that has become so indispensable for the users.

Speaking about Gallery Go, Anil Sabharwal, the Google VP who had led the creation of Google Photos, told Fast Company, “We’ve crossed this really critical milestone of a billion monthly users, and Gallery Go is how we think about the next billion.”

Apple partners with Paytm Mall to sell iPhones and iPads in India

0

Paytm’s e-commerce arm – Paytm Mall – has today announced its partnership with Apple to sell its latest products in India. Going forward, Apple products that are listed on Paytm Mall, like iPhones and iPads, will come with an authorised tag. We should mention that this is only given to brand authorised sellers.

According to Paytm Mall, the Cupertino-based technology giant’s website will be promoting the e-commerce platform on its website and it will be mentioned as of its authorised resellers in India. While in the beginning, only iPhone and iPad lineups will be available on Paytm Mall, the company has said that other Apple products are also under the purview of the partnership.

According to the deal between the two, only authorised sellers would now be able to sell Apple products on Paytm Mall going forward. Any other independent seller who wishes to sell products from Apple on Paytm Mall would first have to get an authorisation from the Cupertino-based technology giant before they list their products on the e-commerce platform.

Speaking about the deal, Paytm Mall said in a statement, “This would ensure that customers get only the genuine product at a fair price.” In addition to this, Paytm Mall would be promoted as an authorised reseller for Apple products in India on the iPhone maker’s website.

Talking about the partnership, Srinivas Mothey, Vice President at Paytm Mall, said, “We are excited to partner with Apple to directly start selling latest editions of iPhone, iPad and other Apple products in India. Paytm Mall is one of India’s leading seller of premium mobile phones, and adding Apple’s range will further strengthen our list of offering to our customers. Our customers will also be eligible to avail offers such as additional discounts on select credit cards and cashbacks. All latest Apple products will be available on our platform and will come with a valid Standard Apple Warranty.”

paytm mall

We should mention that prior to this, Apple had also officially partnered with Amazon to sell its products directly on the e-commerce platform. Although Amazon has had Apple products on the website even before the deal was struck between the two companies, they were previously only available via third-party sellers.

This basically meant that at times, Apple products available on Amazon were imported and would bear extremely inflated price tags. The deal between the two players resulted in consistent pricing and buying directly from Apple. A similar result is now expected on Paytm Mall too.

Popular instant messaging app WhatsApp has today announced a partnership with The Indian School of Public Policy, which is the country’s first school that has a programme that blends theory and practice of public policy, technology product design and management.

With this partnership, the two will be bringing a series of privacy design workshops that will be co-hosted by TTC Labs to future policymakers. These workshops are all set to kick off on September 17 this year and are meant to “explore the importance and practice of privacy-centric design to help technology make a positive impact on society.”

The partnership between WhatsApp and The Indian School of Public Policy was announced by the instant messaging app’s Global Head, Will Cathcart. Cathcart was in Mumbai when he made the announcement and he also participated in Innov8 for a discussion with Indian startups and entrepreneurs. During the session, he also spoke about why privacy should be a key principle when designing a product as it is critical for building successful consumer and business products.

Cathcart said, “WhatsApp was built to help people stay in touch with friends and family as well as connect with businesses.  Because people share some of their most personal needs and moments on WhatsApp, we’re committed to helping people in India have private conversations with others that matter to them. We believe our partnership with Indian School of Public Policy will help future policymakers understand that designing products with privacy as a core tenet helps deliver the fundamental right to privacy people should have in today’s digital world.”
