According to the latest cybersecurity report VLC media player is being used by Chinese hackers to launch malware attacks on users. In a wide-ranging and sustained campaign, the hacking group Cicada is using VLC to hack Windows systems, targeting government organisations as well as NGOs as victims.Symantec’s cybersecurity experts state, “A Chinese state-backed advanced persistent threat (APT) group is attacking organisations around the globe in a likely espionage campaign that has been ongoing for several months.”The VLC media player is open source and does not require payment. It can play all types of media files. As a result, the hacking group is profiting from its fame. Cicada aka APT10 is a state-sponsored Chinese group that is launching malware for spying on the government, legal, religious, and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in multiple countries around the world, including in Europe, Asia, and North America. It’s intriguing that Cicada’s initial activity centred on Japanese-linked companies several years ago, but it has since been linked to attacks on managed service providers (MSPs) with a more global footprint. The Symantec cybersecurity experts say, the presence of a custom loader and custom malware believed to be used exclusively by the APT group on victim networks led to the attribution of this activity to Cicada. The initial activity on victim networks is seen on Microsoft Exchange Servers in several cases, suggesting that a known, unpatched vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange may have been exploited in some cases to gain access to victim networks. It has also been seen that the attackers use a variety of tools, including a custom loader and the Sodamaster backdoor, once they have successfully gained access to the victim machines. The loader used in this campaign was previously used in a Cicada attack. Moreover, Sodamaster is a well-known Cicada tool that this group is thought to use exclusively. It’s a fileless malware that can evade detection in a sandbox by looking for a registry key or delaying execution; enumerating the username, hostname, and operating system of targets; searching for running processes, and downloading and executing additional payloads. It can also obfuscate and encrypt traffic before sending it back to its command-and-control (C&C) server. Cicada has been using this powerful backdoor since at least 2020.Using a custom Mimikatz loader, the attackers have also been seen dumping credentials. This version of Mimikatz includes mimilib.dll, which collects credentials in plain text for any user accessing the compromised host and maintains them across reboots. The attackers also use the legitimate VLC Media Player to launch a custom loader via the VLC Exports function, as well as the WinVNC tool to remotely control victims’ computers.Government-related institutions or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) appear to be the primary targets of this campaign, with some of these NGOs working in the fields of education and religion. In addition, there were victims in the telecommunications, legal, and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to this, the victims are from a variety of countries, including the United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Turkey, Israel, India, Montenegro, and Italy. There is also only one victim in Japan, which is noteworthy given Cicada’s previous focus on Japanese-linked businesses.

The features are available through a new update via the TestFlight beta programme. On WhatsApp beta for iOS, some users have access to new drawing tools.Image Courtesy: WABetaInfoThe blur tool was already available on WhatsApp for iOS, so the drawing editor’s interface when using these new drawing tools is brand new. Some beta testers who have installed the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS updates, in particular, the WhatsApp beta for iOS 22.8.0.73 update, are now seeing the changes. The blur tool will be moved from its usual location (the colour bar) to the bottom of the screen, along with two new pencils, as shown in the screenshot. The Redmi Note 11 was recently released in India, and we got our hands on it. The phone starts at Rs 13,999 for the base model and goes up to Rs 15,999 for the most expensive variant. For that money, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck, as it includes numerous upgrades over last year’s wildly popular Redmi Note 10. In this full review of the Redmi Note 11, we’ll see if it’s a compelling phone in its class.

Redmi Note 11 Review: Design and Display
The phone is the first thing you see when you open the relatively large box. Although we have it in Horizon Blue, the black and white colour variant also look quite nice. So, we’ve been using the phone for a few days now, and the design and build quality are the first things that have impressed us. Because it is not overly bulky and weighs around 180 grams, the device feels quite light when held. With a minimalistic design, the phone appears to be quite durable. The matte finish does a good job of keeping fingerprints and smudges at bay. Unlike the Redmi Note 11 Pro+ 5G (Review), which has a two-step design, the camera module seamlessly houses all four sensors. Because the phone is entirely made up of plastic, including the side frames. Our recommendation, you should use the silicon case that comes with it to avoid any mishaps. The volume keys and a power button with a fingerprint sensor (embedded within) are located on the right frame. The scanner is both fast and dependable. It has a SIM tray on the left that can hold two nano-SIM cards and a microSD card. There’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on top, as well as an IR blaster and speaker grill, as you can see. A USB Type-C port, as well as a speaker grill, are located at the phone’s bottom. On the front of the Redmi Note 11, Xiaomi has included a 6.43-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1,080×2,400 pixels. It has a 20:9 aspect ratio and a refresh rate of up to 90Hz.Outdoor visibility is not an issue because the colours pop well and the display can get quite bright. Unlike the Redmi Note 10 from last year, Xiaomi has included a much improved 90Hz panel on this one, which is a significant improvement over the standard 60Hz panel. As a result, having a higher refresh rate panel improves the overall smartphone experience by making scrolling through the UI and social media feeds much more fluid. In addition, Gorilla Glass 3 is used to protect the screen, which is welcomed in this price bracket.
Redmi Note 11 Review: Performance and Cameras
A 6nm octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 SoC and up to 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM are found under the hood. The phone has a built-in storage capacity of up to 128GB, which can be expanded to 1TB using a microSD card. The chipset is an upgrade over the Snapdragon 678 from last year. The new 680 SoC is faster than the 678, but it is still not as fast as the Snapdragon 732G processor. However, the 680 uses less energy than its predecessor. The Redmi Note 11 is capable of handling everyday tasks with ease. While browsing the internet, watching videos, using social media, and playing games, performance did not stutter. When it comes to gaming, the Redmi Note 11 can run games like COD, BGMI, and Asphalt 9. We played Asphalt 9 on high settings, but the graphics appeared to be a little off. While the COD gameplay remained stable, the device did not become warm over time.Furthermore, the smartphone comes preloaded with MIUI 13 based on Android 11. Although the mobile device comes with bloatware, most of the apps can be uninstalled with ease. We didn’t notice any micro stutters or lags because the user interface is well-designed. The phone is responsive and smooth thanks to the presence of a 90Hz refresh rate and a 180Hz dot sampling rate. In fact, the RAM management is excellent, and the apps do not consume a lot of memory in the background. With MIUI 13, the dark mode optimization has been improved. When it comes to cameras, the Redmi Note 11 has a quad-camera setup with a 50-megapixel main sensor and an f/1.8 aperture on the back. The rear camera setup also consists of an 8-megapixel secondary sensor with an ultra-wide lens, a 2-megapixel macro lens, and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. A 13-megapixel selfie camera sensor with an f/2.4 aperture is included for selfies, too.The Redmi Note 11 has a native resolution of 12.5-megapixels, which is achieved by combining four pixels. So, when the lighting is good, the image quality from the main sensor is great. It manages to produce good images in bright ambient lighting. The colour, contrast, and sharpness appear to be adequate. However, it struggles to take good photos in low light. The photos taken in low light lacked detail and appears to be noisy. The device does, however, have a night mode, but it appears to be not doing too much. Best is to use the flash at night time for optimum results.50MPMacro shotSimilarly, the 8MP ultrawide sensor fails to capture images that are sharp and detailed. We noticed a pink tint in the images when switching from primary to the ultra-wide sensor, which could be a software thing that Xiaomi can take care of in the next update. The portrait shots appeared to be satisfactory. The edge detection is also accurate. Moving on to the front camera, the selfies are okay. The skin tone appears slightly pale for our liking, resulting in a lack of sharpness and detail.Wide/ultrawideIn terms of videography, Redmi has dropped support for 4K recording. In fact, the Redmi Note 11 Pro 5G lacks 4K resolution, which is surprising given that the previous generation of Redmi Note series supported 4K video recording. This is significant due to the chipset, as the Snapdragon 680 is limited to FHD recordings. In addition, videos lack stabilisation, making them wobbly and lacking in detail. The front camera’s videos tell a similar story. So, overall the cameras left us with a mixed bag of feelings.Low lighting shotsWith the 33W charging brick that comes included in the box, charging is also a breeze. It takes about an hour to charge the phone from zero to 100 percent. The battery lasts for a really long time and is good for your day to day use.
Our Take
So, is the Redmi Note 11 a good buy? The device is aimed at casual users who want a device with a good design, decent display and long battery life in a budget. If you fall in any of those categories go for it without a doubt. You will get good imagery from the primary sensor and you can do a bit of everyday gaming on this handset too.

Canon has been breaking boundaries and launching a flurry of good products in the market for all sections of society. Recently they launched the Canon EOS R5 C and we got a chance to have an interaction with Mr C Sukumaran, Senior Director- Consumer Systems Products and Imaging Communication Business, Canon India. We threw some doozies his way too, and this is what he had to say.
What is the main USP of the Canon EOS R5 C and how is it better than its predecessors? Who should buy it?
The Canon EOS R5 C is a gamechanger for the cinema industry as it brings to the table not only the uncompromising video quality of the Cinema EOS series but also the unshakable image quality of the EOS R5. Unlike any of its predecessors, the EOS R5 C is a high-quality and high-performance hybrid cinema model. It is Canon’s first camera to provide an internal 8K 60P Cinema RAW Light recording which enables it to perform stupendously in an array of video production scenarios. The EOS R5 C makes long-duration recording/ usage a seamless process because of the inbuilt thermal transfer fan along with proprietary heat transfer architecture which allows longer video recording.

This compact and versatile camera is thus, the complete package. It is ideal for a wide variety of usage in which mobility plays a crucial role. This includes journalism, documentary filmmaking and fields that require cinema-level image quality, such as those of advertising and corporate video production. Through this launch, we also wish to appeal to filmmakers especially targeting OTT platforms, production houses and creators/artists.
What is the India road map going to look like, are we going to see more innovations in the mirrorless camera category in 2022?
Our vision is to bring in India-specific solutions that cater to the evolved needs of consumers along with encouraging the passion for the art. We are consistently working on new product developments basis feedback from consumers, optimizing sales network and marketing investments as well as exploring new business opportunities.
Our focus areas and marketing strategies are always in line with upcoming industry trends and new consumption patterns. For instance, in the last five years, we have observed expansion in the professional segment fostered by the growth of wedding photography in Tier-II, III and IV areas. We see this as a growing trend wherein professionals have picked up wedding photography because it helps them earn more money and we see them opting for full-frame mirrorless cameras and buying professional gear.
Thus, this is proof that the mirrorless camera industry in India is growing exponentially and is expected to grow even more steadily in the near future. Our efforts have resulted in us continuously securing the top global share within the industry while witnessing maximum growth in our mirrorless full-frame segment. Hence, it is our continuous endeavour to cater to the ever-evolving needs of customers and bolster our presence further in the mirrorless segment this year.
How is the business being affected by the emergence of better smartphone cameras? Is there any drop or is the calling as strong as ever?
While this is majorly a concern just at the entry-level, I also believe that smartphones have helped make photography even more popular. If you pick up or see any mobile phone ad, it will highlight the camera as its key function. This along with the proliferation of social media apps like Instagram that thrives on photographs, have prompted consumers to click more and more pictures. And, as they embark on this imaging journey, they start realising that there is a significant difference between taking pictures on a phone and a professional camera. Photography is all about the detailing and that is where they begin to understand the limitations of mobile phone cameras when it comes to nuanced professional photography and thereby moving to professional cameras to get the much-needed quality difference.
Having said that, the traction that we have been witnessing in the realm of professional photography in India in the past few years has been very encouraging. Both our entry-level and mirrorless cameras have been our best performing segments. This shows that demand for professional cameras in India is across segments wherein entry-level cameras depict that more and more photography enthusiasts are taking a step to take up photography as a profession and demand in the mirrorless segment showcases that the industry is quick to adapt to changing technology.
There is a lot of good video content demand now. How is Canon addressing that segment with its cameras and lenses? Is Canon holding any special classes or sessions to train videographers to be adept with new Canon cameras with 4K video technology? If so, how can one register for them?
At Canon, it has been our consistent effort to bring the latest technologies to our customers that not only enhance their photography and videography experience but also allows them to innovate and experiment with the content they create. From time to time, we organize training sessions in the form of masterclasses for imaging enthusiasts guided by our reputed specialists, Canon EOS Ambassadors. These masterclasses are curated in close association with some of the industry’s best talents and through the same, we aim to reach out to photography enthusiasts across the country by adopting a hyperlocal approach of conducting webinars.

We also actively engage via Instagram Live sessions and late last year, we even set up an immersive experience like never before in South India titled ‘Capture – The Heart of Action.’ By setting up real-life dedicated zones at the event, we aimed to let customers experience the products first-hand in a captivating environment, an aspect that we all have sincerely missed in the past two years. Purchasing professional imaging equipment requires significant investment and we want to assure our customers of not only the best-in-class technology by showcasing our products but also by providing that much-needed direction and training.
Are we going to see pocket-friendly cameras for content creators in the future?
Over the past few years, Vlogging has emerged as a new form of content creation, and it is gaining immense popularity and becoming a trend that everyone wants to latch onto. Keeping the same in mind, we had launched the multifaceted EOS M50 Mark II. Poised with features such as those that allow content creators to live-stream directly to YouTube by connecting to Wi-Fi as well as enabling users to create 4K quality videos seamlessly in various scenarios, the EOS M50 Mark II has gained admiration among the ‘Vlogger’ community.
To further support content creators to produce engaging content and fuel their passion, we are working on creating more innovative imaging products powered with the best-in-class features and user-friendly interfaces at affordable pricing for professional imaging gear.
Any last comments you would want to add?
In sync with our corporate tagline- ‘Delighting You Always’, reinforced by world-class technology, we will continue to refine our diverse imaging technologies. Based on our core optical technology, we are working towards creating an even stronger imaging system that meets the needs of increasingly diverse users to promote the spread of photo and video culture. We are working on expanding our presence into new segments including Education technology, Vlogging, OTT, Preaching and Virtual Reality as we strive to be a one-stop-shop for all photography needs.
