This is how Microsoft plans to curb future database security breach, after the recent security scare

0

Database security breach is something that millions of Internet users are worried about. The latest news comes from Microsoft which reported that about 250 million Customer Service and Support (CSS) records was “accidently” exposed on the web.

The leaked database information contained details of conversations between Microsoft support agents and customers from across the globe since 2005 up till December 2019. As per insiders, the data exposed could have been accessed by anyone via a web browser as there was no need to key in the password or any authentication code.

On December 28, it was Bob Diachenko, a security researcher with Comparitech, who first found out the database has been compromised. The very next day, he reported the same issue to Microsoft resulting in immediate action by the US-based technology major. The engineers remediated the configuration on December 31, 2019 to restrict the database and prevent unauthorized access.

As the investigation into a misconfiguration of an internal customer support database used for Microsoft support case analytics has come to an end, the tech giant has announced that there was no malicious use of the information.

“Our investigation confirmed that the vast majority of records were cleared of personal information in accordance with our standard practices. In some scenarios, the data may have remained unredacted if it met specific conditions,”

“We want to sincerely apologize and reassure our customers that we are taking it seriously and working diligently to learn and take action to prevent any future reoccurrence. We also want to thank the researcher, Bob Diachenko, for working closely with us so that we were able to quickly fix this misconfiguration, investigate the situation, and begin notifying customers as appropriate,” Ann Johnson, Corporate Vice President – Cybersecurity Solutions Group and Eric Doerr, General Manager – Microsoft Security Response Center said in a blog post.

In order to prevent any future occurrences of database misuse, Microsoft charted out following measures to take the issue head on:

  • Auditing the established network security rules for internal resources
  • Expanding the scope of the mechanisms that detect security rule misconfigurations
  • Adding additional alerting to service teams when security rule misconfigurations are detected
  • Implementing additional redaction automation

Emphasising on the fact that misconfigurations are unfortunately a common error across the industry, the officials added, “We have solutions to help prevent this kind of mistake, but unfortunately, they were not enabled for this database. As we’ve learned, it is good to periodically review your own configurations and ensure you are taking advantage of all protections available.”

SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C Review: Free up mobile space with ease

0

We have seen a number of devices coming month after month that can transfer files from the mobile on to a USB flash drive without the need of a computer. The experts in the field are SanDisk who have brought a new Dual Drive that can transfer files from a mobile device to the USB storage effortlessly. This is our review of the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C.

Design

The SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C comes in a simple packaging like the rest of the series and storage cards. We always support less use of plastic and biodegradable materials, and SanDisk gets additional marks for doing that. However, there is still a bit of single-use plastic in the packaging. Moving on, out of the case the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C looks like a regular USB flash drive. However, it comes with a swivel head that rotates to protect either side.SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive

One side has the USB Type-C connector and the other side has the USB 3.1 port. One is for the PC and other is for to get files directly from a mobile device or smartphones that have a USB Type-C port. The cavity in the swivel head is a good addition, as it allows users to carry it in the key chain and one would not lose it so easily. SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C is available in just one colour, black, with SanDisk branding written on top of it in silver.

SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C Performance

The one SanDisk sent to us for review is the 64GB version. There are 32 and 128GB versions also available in India. As usual, we ran it through the test bench. To transfer files easily from the mobile, one has to install SanDisk memory zone app on the mobile for it to work. Before we transferred from the mobile we ran a benchmark on it on the PC. It did well here. On HD Tune test we got read speeds of up to 151MBPS and write speed of up to 41MBPS. We achieved this on a USB 3.1 port; if you are on USB 2.0 port the speed will reduce considerably.SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C benchmark

But the real test lies when transferring from the mobile phone. The app is easy to install and consumers can almost instantaneously transfer files from the mobile device to the flash drive. We sent a 1GB file from the smartphone to the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C and it transferred in under 30 seconds. Through the app, users can also take automatic backups which start as soon as the drive is connected to the mobile device. We tested the app on a mid-range Android smartphone and the interface is minimal and easy to use. We faced no lag whatsoever.

Verdict

SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go Type C supports smartphones, tablets as well as computers with Type-C ports. It is a good option for people who want to take regular backups of their photos, videos or documents. Also, if you do not have a microSD card option in the smartphone, this drive is a good buy to transfer content quickly and free up much needed mobile space. As for the price, the SanDisk Ultra Dual Drive Go TypeC can be picked up for Rs 1,200 that is a bit steep.

Fortnite’s most recent update on iOS devices bring an advantage to gamers on iPad Pro

The most recent update to the free to play game, Fortnite’s iOS version will let users who play the game on an iPad Pro run it at the speed of 120 frames per second on the device. This feature lets gamers use the device’s display which has the pro motion feature supporting a higher refresh rate and a smoother performance. Users can enable the speed of 120 frames per second in the settings screen of Fortnite.

However, users who enable the mode will get reduced visual quality and resolution, this is because the game’s visual settings fall to medium at the speed of 120 frames per second. The game’s other settings of high and epic are at 60 frames per second and 30 frames per second respectively.

An iPad Pro which runs Fortnite beats the gaming experience on gaming setups, which offer Fortnite like the PS4 and the Xbox One. These consoles only support the 60 frames per second mode. The latest v11.40.1 update also carries support for thumbstick buttons on devices running iOS 13 and higher.

Fortnite on iOS was first launched as a beta app and became a viral hit with gamers who prefer the Battle Royale mode it offers when compared to the Personal Computer and Gaming Console versions of Fortnite. The iOS application exclusively focuses on Player versus Player battles in the Battle Royale mode while the gaming console and desktop variants have a Save the World version player versus environment version. It is now one of the most played games giving stiff competition to PUBG Mobile and PC. There is news that PUBG user base is going down, while Fortnite’s user base is going up consistently. This is happening because Fortnite is bringing better and regular updates on all its platforms.

Huawei partners with a Dutch company to create a competitor for Google Maps on its devices

Chinese company Huawei will soon be working with Dutch digital mapping company TomTom to enable maps on their upcoming devices. An unnamed spokesperson from the company confirmed that the deal was signed a while back, with knowledge of it becoming public recently. TomTom currently has applications on iOS and Android.

To take on Google, Huawei will be making improved applications powered by TomTom’s data in the form of maps, traffic information and navigation tools. TomTom had previously supplied data to Apple for the Apple Maps application. Rumours suggest that Huawei which was working on making an all-new mapping system that is currently named as Huawei’s map kit. This new software was meant to be exclusively for use by app developers. It was believed that the software will use data from Russian technology provider Yandex and Huawei’s own telecom base stations. It is now speculated that the technology will take more time to be developed and the deal with TomTom might be a temporary replacement to the map kit whose development may yet take an unspecified amount of time.

Huawei until recently was dependent on Google Maps like other Android device manufacturers. However, recent sanctions by the current American administration on the company stand as a threat to the existing ties between Huawei and American companies. The move to look for an alternative might prove a smart decision to the company in the long term. Huawei devices currently use Android but this may not be for long as recent reports confirm that Huawei is working on developing their own operating system which will be called HarmonyOS. The current deal with TomTom might take the company a long way in reducing their dependency on Google’s range of products and services.

Last November saw the release of Huawei’s first folding smartphone, the Mate X which came without any pre-installed Google apps or US-made processors. Huawei is China’s first global tech brand and suffered a backlash from the sanctions placed by the government of the United States of America. The Mate X runs on Huawei’s Kirin 980 processor and comes preloaded with Huawei’s own replacement applications to compete with popular Google applications like Google music and maps. The Mate X runs on Huawei’s very own EMUI 9 OS which is based on Google Android. The device is currently available for sale only in China.

The Sony Walkman is back in an all-new avatar: Tech specs, price and availability

If you are a millennial then you have definitely used or seen the Sony Walkman. It was the “It” gadget in the 1990s that enabled the users to listen to their favourite songs from the likes of Wham, Michael Jackson, Madonna and more. It was a much simpler time when you just had to insert an audio cassette inside the Sony Walkman and hear the audio via a rather flimsy looking yet sturdy pair of headphones. The Discman then took over and then came the Apple iPod that could hold thousands of songs.

Sony has brought back the Walkman in a fresh avatar. This one is called Sony NW-A105 Android Walkman. This is unlike yesterday’s Walkman and as the name suggests run on an Android OS ecosystem. Built for people who just want the best resonance form a device and nothing else, it is for them. But it does make us wonder when iPod and other similar music players have been killed by the smartphone why is Sony bringing a stand-alone personal audio player now to the market. Maybe they want to play on the Nostalgia part or maybe there is a hidden message here.

Moving forward, let’s touch upon the technical specifications of the new Sony Walkman NW-A105. It comes with a 3.6-inch touch screen, has a battery life of 26 hours and runs on Android 9.0 Pie. The new Walkman supports Hi-Res audio with better than CD quality sound as told by the company. There is 16GB of internal storage inside with the option to expand it by 128GB using a microSD card. Bluetooth and NFC are also on board to connect it with an external audio source including wireless headphones. Wi-Fi is also there so that users can play their favourite track of the net. Sony Walkman NW-A105 supports USB Type-C charging and all popular audio formats such as MP3, FLAC and WAV are supported. One can also see a lot of buttons on its curved edge. These include playback buttons including play and pause, next track, volume up and down as well as the power button.

Coming to its price this smart device is definitely nowhere near the price bracket of the Walkman we used in the ’90s. The Sony Walkman NW-A105 is priced at Rs 23,990, will start selling in India on 24th January 2020. There is only one colour option on it, which black.

Netflix braces up for streaming war, surpasses 167 million subscriber base

1

With the debut of Disney+ and Apple TV Plus in November 2019, it was likely that the subscriber base of Netflix might get affected due to the increasing competition in the streaming world. However, many were proved wrong as Netflix attracted more subscribers than what was expected in the fourth quarter.

Netflix, which is the world’s leading streaming entertainment service, witnessed an increase in its subscriber base at it grows to 167.1 million, adding 8.76 million new subscribers.

“We have a big headstart in streaming and will work to build on that by focusing on the same thing we have focused on for the past 22 years – pleasing members. We believe if we do that well, Netflix will continue to prosper. As an example, in Q4, despite the big debut of Disney+ and the launch of Apple TV+, our viewing per membership grew both globally and in the US on a year over year basis, consistent with recent quarters,” the streaming major said while announcing the q4 results.

Netflix further revealed that it has been developing an animation studio within the company to provide wide range of animated content for kids, adults and families. “We have amazing creators with pedigree from Disney Animation, Pixar, DreamWorks Animation and Illumination now working at Netflix on their next big projects,” Netflix reported in its official release.

In order to lure more subscribers, Netflix was out with its first original feature-length animated film by filmmaker Sergio Pablos’ Klaus in the Q4. Interestingly, the animated film that was also nominated for an Academy Award.

As per the Netflix, “In its first 28 days, 40million members chose to watch this heart-warming Santa Claus origin story.”

Netflix has already charted its strategy for 2020 to grow its business further. It has announced to premiere ‘Over The Moon’ by legendary animator Glen Keane this year.

Last year, Netflix had also rolled out of a new mobile plan for India at Rs 199 per month. With the subscription, members could enjoy all of Netflix’s content—uninterrupted and without ads—in standard definition (SD) on one smartphone or tablet at a time.

“Our members in India watch more on their mobiles than members anywhere else in the world- and they love to download our shows and films. We believe this new plan will make Netflix even more accessible and better suit people who like to watch on their smartphones and tablets—both on the go and at home,” said Ajay Arora, Director, Product Innovation, Netflix.

Time will reveal what more surprises Netflix has for its subscribers. Do let us know what are you expecting in the comments section below.

Know how Google’s Envelope helps smartphone users undergo Digital Detox

0

In today’s world, technology is the lens through which we see the world. However, the excessive use of technology can often debar you from reaching your desired goals successfully. Worry not, Google is out with an amazing ‘Envelope’ under its ‘Well-Being Project’ that help you enhance productivity and find a balance with technology. The two phone-sized special paper envelope created by Special Projects transforms the functionality of your smartphone for the time it is sealed inside.

Using the first envelope by Google, you can change your smartphone in to a very basic handset. All that it allows you to do is:

  • You can make and receive calls
  • You can speed-dial your favourite number
  • You can access the clock to know the time

On the contrary, the other envelope created under Google’s Well-Being project turns your smartphone into a photo and video camera. However, you will unable to see the screen till the time you device is sealed inside the envelope.

“We were inspired by a recent trend where people purchase a second, simpler phone for holidays and weekends, as a way of limiting their access to technology. We wanted to create a more accessible version of this, which would enable people to try a day without a phone without committing to purchasing a new device,” as per a blog post by Special Projects on ‘Experiments with Google‘.

Google has also revealed that “You can download the app on the Play Store, and all the code is available on Github.”

Google’s aim to help you to focus on what’s in front of you by removing distractions from your life for a little while so that you successfully experience a digital detox.

Besides this, Google has also created an Activity Bubbles activity that allows you to find out what your phone usage looks like in a day. Wondering how it work? Well, each unlock creates a new bubble. The longer you stay on your phone the bigger the bubble grows.

Interestingly, Google’s Well-Being project has also shared an interesting Screen Stopwatch. This stopwatch tells you how much time you spend on your phone each day. Each time you unlock your phone, the stopwatch continues to count.

Let us know how you experience digital detox in the comments section below.

OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone likely to house 120Hz display

0

With 2020 MWC around the corner, the smartphone world is being bombarded with plenty of leaks revealing what we might get to see next. The latest leak has been reported by True Tech, where it claims that a regular leakster, who claims to be an employee of OnePlus, has revealed an exclusive of OnePlus 8 Pro confirming 120Hz Display.

The leaked display shot of OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone showcases screen refresh rates with three different selection modes:

  • 120Hz – For maximum smoothness but slight reduced battery life.
  • 90Hz – For balanced smoothness and balanced battery life.
  • 60Hz – Less smoothness but slightly extended battery life.

The leaked screen shot of what it claims to be OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone showed that the mode selected 120Hz. Moreover, a disclaimer stating “the higher the screen refresh rate, the smoother the experience” can also be in seen in the leaked image. However, there was no hint whether this will bring down the resolution below 1080pixel.

Besides this, a forum post on OnePlus website talk about the development of its next-generation 120Hz Fluid Display. “The spirit of ‘Never Settle’ is not about specs alone. The smoothest smartphone display must also be able to deliver a superior visual quality and viewing comfort. We’re sure that OnePlus’s new 120Hz Fluid Display will be the best you’ll lay eyes on in 2020,” claims the post by Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus.

OnePlus‘s 120Hz Fluid Display also provides support for 10-bit colour, providing 1,024 shades of each primary colour and 1.07 billion possible colours. This is 64 times as many colours than are supported on mainstream smartphone devices, giving users fuller, more natural gradients when viewing content, and creators more confidence to accurately display the intended colour spectrum,” he added.

If this comes true with the launch of OnePlus 8 Pro, the smartphone users could experience amazing smoothness while watching videos. The post on OnePlus Forum also revealed that the smartphone king used MEMC technology that uses “real-time algorithmic adjustments to insert additional frames to a video file, enabling something shot at 24 or 30fps to play at 60 or even 120fps.”

However, we need to wait and see what impact OnePlus’s 120Hz Fluid Display will have on battery life of OnePlus 8 Pro. Do let us know your views in the comment section below.

Tech Trends 2020: What will the year 2020 hold for gadgets and technology

You don’t have to be a diehard cricket fan to love the sound of 2020 (twenty-twenty). And like its new-age cricket counterpart, this year is going to be fast, expensive and impactful. If you don’t stay on top of latest trends and launches you might miss a chance to travel to the moon in a spacious, monogrammed, gold and Swarovski studded vessel; or own kitchen gizmos that let you know when the food is cooked. Better yet, purchase luxury vehicles that are right out of a Sci-Fi movie, but look sleeker and smarter.

SHARP Healsio Superheated Steam Oven (1)

Let’s face it we love gadgets that sing along or read the news to us. In 2019 we saw a lot of AIs (Artificial Intelligence) coming to life like Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant in our smartphones/smart speakers. So, it was only natural that this year they move into our kitchens. From refrigerators and microwaves to smaller kitchen appliances—with the new tech these gadgets will read out recipes, help users shop for groceries and even tell them when the food is cooked in the oven. Sounds delicious, doesn’t it?

1. Tesla Model S

  • It’s electric

A decade ago a luxury vehicle meant either a larger-than-life SUV or a floor-hugging sports car, both fuel guzzlers. But as going green becomes more mainstream, it was only a matter of time for luxury brands to move towards non-bio fuel engines. This year everyone from Mercedes to BMW to Audi is going to bring its own set of EVs (Electric Vehicles). The buzz is that Tesla might come to India with a slightly cheaper version (though still expensive) by the end of 2020. These high-end luxury EVs will have heated seats, climate control multi-channel sound system from smart artificial assistant and even massage seats. Some of them might even drive or park on their own. With a range of 300 km or higher, they are ideal for those who want an eco-friendly alternative and money isn’t a constraint.

ISRO

  • Space no longer the final frontier

This year space travel might become a reality. Virgin Galactic was leading this area sometime back however, Tesla has overtaken them and are claiming that they will, sometime in 2020, send humans to the moon or at least take a trip around it. They have been working day and night on Space X and its rockets that can take people out of the atmosphere. Of course, this will be one expensive trip, so only those with really deep pockets will be able to make the journey. The company intends to ensure that those taking this special trip will do so in the lap of comfort with top of the line gadgets and luxe interiors to keep them company.

Xbox series X

  • 8K ready, faster and meaner gaming consoles

These have been on the backfoot for some time now, as PC and mobile gaming made the most impact in 2019. But things are going to change in 2020. Both Sony and Microsoft have announced they will bring their respective new gaming consoles to the market in the coming year. Sony will release the PlayStation 5 whereas Microsoft will launch Xbox Series X. The regular UHD TV these days supports up to 4K resolution, however, these consoles will support double of that. Yes, 8K is what both will support as well as display true to life graphics and scenery. The exteriors, as well as interiors, will get a complete overhaul and what users will get is meaner looking machines with blitzkrieg performance. Cost of top-end variants will be between Rs 1 to Rs 1.5 lakh.

  • 5G will be rolling out

Well, it is about time India also gets on to the bandwagon of 5G services. Trials are slated to run as TRAI has given it the green signal. Chances are that the by the end of 2020 Airtel and JIO along with Vodafone/Idea will be running 5G services. These could be partly rolled out in Metros followed by the larger cities and town. Speeds of up to 250Mbps can be achieved. This will result in faster streaming and transfer of data. Also, VoIP calls will become better.
