Well, in my previous stints I always wanted to do Gadget Awards. But I guess it did not happen because fate wanted me to do the best one first. This is my, the team’s and Gadget Bridge’s first time of giving out awards and accolades to the worthy in the field of consumer technology (Gadget Bridge Awards 2019). The year 2019 and the last decade saw some great gizmos being launched in the country. India evolved from a caterpillar of a third world country for gizmotics, where gadgets came after 6-9 months of its global launch, into the beautiful butterfly where gadgets are being launched first. We sat down and understood, which categories make the most sense as Gadget Bridge covers all things good (Tech) under the sun, for the #GadgetBridgeAwards 2019. And then we carefully sifted through the various smartphones, TVs, headphones, laptops etc, which we have used, reviewed, unboxed and/or experienced during 2019.
We have a lot of great award categories and two special sections of awards where we will need your help. Yes, you the viewers and avid readers of Gadget Bridge will be needed to vote for the Gadget Bridge People’s Choice Awards 2019. And as always, we believe in spreading the joy, so a #GadgetBridgeGiveaway is also part of this awards ceremony for the readers/viewers who participate in the voting. More details can be found here. Xiaomi has launched the all new Redmi K30 in China on December 11. This successor of the Redmi K20 comes with a modified design and performance upgrades. The smartphone supports 5G as well. If rumours are to be believed, this phone will launch in global markets very soon. However, Xiaomi has not launched the Redmi K30 Pro yet, the Redmi K30 Pro is supposed to launch in globally by March 2020. The Redmi K30 comes with both 4G and 5G variants. Comparing the Redmi K30’s physical characteristics with that of its predecessor, the Redmi K20, Redmi K30 has a cleaner look with a gradient finish, being available in 4 colours compared to the bright design and colours of the Redmi K20. The Redmi K30 comes with a circular loop around the rear camera set up. The smartphone also has a punch-hole display setup. The Xiaomi Redmi K30 has a side-mounted fingerprint scanner in a stark difference to the Redmi K20, which had an in-display fingerprint sensor. Performance wise, The Redmi K30’s 4G version has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730 chipset with a 4,500mAh battery, while the 5G variant comes with Snapdragon 765G processor. The Redmi K20, on the other hand, has a 730G GPU and is powered by a 4,000mAh battery. Both phones offer support for fast charging. Camera wise, the Redmi K30 has a quad-camera setup with a 64MP Sony IMX686 sensor, with an 8MP ultra-wide-angle lens, a 2MP depth sensor and a macro lens of 5MP. The front possesses a selfie camera setup of 20MP and 2MP sensors. The Redmi K20 on the other hand, has a triple camera setup of 48MP, 8MP and a 13MP sensor with a pop-up selfie camera of 20MP. Talking about the pricing of both the phones, the Redmi K30 is selling in China at a price of 1,599-1,999 Yuan that is approximately anywhere between Rs 16,500 – Rs20,500. The Redmi K20 starts at Rs 19,999 for the base model with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, while the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage version has a price tag of Rs 22,999. Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch version is now selling in India
Apple has begun selling the 16-inch MacBook Pro in India. This version was released last month by the tech giant in the US. According to the company, the 16-inch MacBook Pro has improved specifications with a scissor keyboard replacing the Butterfly keyboard, which left much to be desired by users. The all new Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch will be sold to customers through Amazon and Apple’s authorised retailers country wide. The base variant has a 6-core 9th Gen Intel Core i7 processor and an AMD Raedon Pro 5300M graphic processor with 4GB of GDDR6 memory. This variant has 16GB RAM with 512GB storage. The display is of 16-inch with an LED-backlit retina display. The other variant, with 1TB storage, meanwhile has an 8-core 9th Gen Intel core i9 processor and an AMD Raedon Pro 5500M processor with 4GB GDDR6 memory. This version of the MacBook Pro has 1TeraByte storage with a memory of 16GB DDR4 RAM. The display however, is the same at 16-inches with backlit Retina display. The battery of both variants is of 100 Watt-hours giving the notebook a battery life of up to 11 hours. Replacing the previously used Butterfly Keyboard is the Scissor Keyboard or the Magic Keyboard, which has a refined scissor mechanism. This key board comes with an Esc button that was previously on the touch bar. The arrow buttons get more spacing with and inverted T design. Over that, the cooling fans have bigger vents with extended blades to increase airflow by 28 percent. The device now supports better heat dissipation with a 35 percent larger heatsink when compared to the 15-inch MacBook. HMD Global announced that the roll out of the Android 10 operating system for Nokia 7.1.  After the roll out of the new OS update for the other two Nokia phones Nokia 9 Pure View and Nokia 8.1 this is this phone which is getting the upgraded to Android 10. The smartphone was launched last year and has already received its first OS update Nokia 7.1 is a part of the Android One Programme and the company promises three years of guaranteed monthly security update and two years of OS update. The company has released the new OS update for the smartphone. If you have not received the notification yet then you can also check the OTA update manually by going to Settings > About Phone > System updates > and check for the latest update that comes with version number 4.08B. The new update comes with the November Android Security patch. The new update brings new features with Android 10:
  • Gesture Navigation: control of your Nokia smartphone just got slicker, with faster and more intuitive controls at the tip of your fingers
  • Smart Reply: receive even smarter responses in messages, not just wording but actions you can take

The company said that in the fourth quarter of 2019 the company will be rolling out the Android 10 update to at least three more devices and even more running the new OS by early 2020. Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi launched its new smartphone in China. The company introduced Redmi K30, which is basically a photography centric phone. The company also launched other devices such as Redmibook 13, Redmi Wi-Fi Router and smart speakers alongside Redmi K30. It will be available in both 4G as well as 5G connectivity options that comes with different processors. The key specifications include a quad rear camera set up with 64-megapixel primary camera, a dual front camera and a 4,500mAh battery.

Redmi K30 pricing

As we already mentioned that the company introduced Redmi K30 in two variants 4G and 5G. The 5G option will be available in multiple configurations of 6GB RAM with 64GB storage at CYN 1,999(approximately Rs 20,150), 6GB RAM with 128GB storage option at CYN 2,299(approximately Rs 23,150). The 8GB RAM with 128GB storage option price has been set at CYN 2,599(approximately Rs 26,150), whereas the 8GB RAM with 256GB storage will be available at CYN 2,899(approximately Rs 29150). The device comes in four colour options of Deep-Sea Light, Time Monologue, Flower Shadow, Purple Jade Fantasy. The 4G variant of the Redmi K30 will be available in the same configurations, but with different pricing. The 6GB RAM with 64GB storage has been priced at CNY 1,599 (approximately Rs 16,150), whereas the 6GB RAM with 128GB storage price has been set at CNY 1,699 (approximately Rs 17,150). The 8GB RAM with 128GB storage option can be purchased at CNY 1,899 (approximately Rs 19,150) and the 8GB RAM with 256GB storage option will be available at CNY 2,199 (approximately Rs 22,150). The company has launched this phone in three colour options of Deep-Sea Light, Flower Shadow, Purple Jade Fantasy, too.

Redmi K30 4G and 5G specifications

Redmi K30 4G and Redmi K30 5G variant comes with different processors of Snapdragon 730G and Snapdragon 765G SoC respectively. The phone runs on Android 10 based MIUI 11. Both the variant features a 6.67-inch full-HD+ hole-punch display with a 20:9 aspect ratio and 1,080×2,400 pixels of resolution. In terms of cameras, Redmi K30 (both variants) come with a quad rear camera set up comprising of Sony IMX686 64-megapixel camera sensor with f/1.89 aperture, a 5-megapixel macro lens, a 2-megapixel depth sensor and an 8-megapixel wide-angle lens with 120 degrees field of view. The 4G variant features a dual front camera set up with a 5-megapixel and 2-megapixel camera sensor. Whereas the 5G variant comes with a 20 megapixel and 2-megapixel camera sensors. Both the variants house a battery with a capacity of 4500mAh. But the 5G variant’s battery supports 30W fast charging and the 4G variant supports 27W fast charging. Dell announced the launch of its first G series desktop Dell G5 5090 in India. The company launched the gaming-centric desktop while expanding its PC gaming portfolio in the country. The desktop comes with Intel’s 9th-gen processors and Nvidia graphics. Dell Technologies introduced its first desktop under the G series that has been built to cater to gaming enthusiasts. The desktop is said to support 9th Gen Intel Core i9 processors and i9 K-series CPUs, VR-capable NVIDIA GeForce GTX and RTX graphic cards to provide best gaming experience, high-fidelity gaming experience and split-second responsiveness. The device is available in two configurations of 9th-gen 6-core Intel Core i5-9600K and a 9th-gen 8-core Intel Core i7-9700K. The processor is coupled up with 8GB or 16GB of 2,666MHz DDR4 RAM and single-drive and dual-drive storage options. The company provides 1TB 7,200RPM SATA HDD 500GB M.2 SSD in single-drive whereas the 512GB M.2 SSD (Boot) + 1TB 7200RPM SATA HDD storage option in dual-drive options. We earlier mentioned that the new Dell desktop includes the Nvidia GTX and RTX graphics card. The buyers get the choice between a GTX 1650 with 4GB GDDR5, a GTX 1660Ti with 6GB GDDR6 or an RTX 2060 with 6GB GDDR6. The Dell G5 5090 comes equipped with a 95W fan with a maximum fan speed of 4,500rpm and a flow rate of 41.8 cubic feet per minute. It can be set to four thermal mode options that can be set in the Alienware Command Centre that can be adjusted as per the user’s needs. The Alienware Command Centre has been designed to improve the gaming experience, fine-tune game and systems settings, solve problems as well as manage time. Dell G5 5090 Pricing and availability The company has set the price of Dell G5 5090 at Rs 67,590 (base model). The device will be available in a single Abyss Grey colour option with Blue LED lighting and clear side door. Bharti Airtel today announced the launch of its first-ever voice over Wi-Fi service –known as Airtel Wi-Fi Calling. According to the company, this service will enhance the indoor voice calling experience for its subscribers. Randeep Sekhon, Chief Technology Officer, Bharti Airtel said, “As a customer obsessed brand, we are constantly working on improving customer experience based on their feedback. Seamless indoor coverage has been a key ask from mobile customers but getting permissions for site installations has always been a big challenge for mobile operators, particularly in top metros. ‘Airtel Wi-Fi Calling’ is another pioneering technology intervention from Airtel and will go a long way in making the voice calling experience more seamless.” From today onwards the Airtel smartphone users will be able to experience better signal quality indoors with Wi-Fi at home or office. The subscribers are not required to download any app to the service. Initially, the company has launched the service in Delhi NCR for its customers and will be progressively rolling out the voice-over Wi-Fi service in the other parts of the country. The telecommunication company says that for using this service the Airtel subscribers will not be charged extra. They are allowed to make a free call over ‘Airtel Wi-Fi Calling and the application consumes minimal data. According to the company currently, not all the phones will be supporting Airtel’s voice over Wi-Fi service. The company says all the Apple iPhone series starting 6s and above, Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro, POCO F1, Samsung Galaxy J6, A10s, On6, M30s and all the models of OnePlus 7 series will be supporting Airtel Wi-Fi Calling service. The company has promised that it is working all leading smartphone brands to roll out compatibility with Airtel Wi-Fi Calling. This service is compatible with Airtel Xstream Fiber home broadband and will soon be compatible with all broadband services and Wi-Fi hotspots. The Airtel customers are required to follow the below-mentioned steps in order to use the service:
  1. Check smartphone compatibility on in/wifi-calling
  2. Upgrade device operating software to the latest version that supports Wi-Fi Calling*
  3. Go to Settings on your mobile phone and Switch On Wi-Fi Calling
  4. Keep VoLTE switched on as well for a seamless experience

Expanding its X series range the company launched a compact and lightweight mirrorless camera that comes with the company’s own color reproduction technology. According to the company, Fujifilm X-Pro3 is built of lightweight titanium in order to provide portability and durability while clicking pictures. As per a report, this plan was first revealed by the President of Huawei consumer business group’s software division, Wang Chenglu to the government-backed Shenzhen Special Zone Daily newspaper during a store event. To recall, Harmony OS was introduced by Huawei few months ago in August in order to replace Google’s Android. As the company had a tiff with the US regarding the trade restrictions with the intention of cutting its access to technology made by U.S. firms. As per the Counterpoint Research report, Harmony OS will become the world’s fifth-largest operating system surpassing Linux, with 2 percent of the market share by 2020. “Currently, Android is the world’s leading operating system with a market share of 39 percent and is followed by Windows having 35 percent market share, Apple’s iOS with 13.87 percent market share and macOS with 5.92 percent market share. Linux is currently the fifth largest operating system with 0.77 percent share,” the report further added. The company has already starting rolling out the OS to its smart televisions Honor Vision TV and Huawei’s Smart TV. Industry insiders tell us that Apple is planning to use Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensing technology in an iPhone scheduled to be released in 2020. The company might be partnering with a Taiwan based touchscreen maker to develop an iPhone that will be unveiled in 2020 or 2021. Qualcomm unveiled its new 3D Sonic Max ultrasonic fingerprint reader at their annual Snapdragon technology summit in USA. Currently. Qualcomm supplies fingerprint sensors to Samsung’s Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series. Apple iPhones could possibly use this technology or an advanced version of this in their new devices, which will be launched in 2020 or 2021. There are two types of fingerprint sensors which are under display, the optical and the ultrasonic. The optical variant functions by creating a 2D image of the fingerprint, while the ultrasonic variant generates a 3D image to identify the user. Speculations and rumours suggest that one of Apple’s products next year will have both Face ID and full screen touch ID. Ultrasonic technology however works only with OLED displays and hence may be limited to higher-end iPhones of the future. While other iPhones of mid-range will have to depend on the optical variant technology for fingerprint recognition. Sources tell us that Apple may release a 5.4-inch iPhone, two 6.1-inch iPhones and one 6.7-inch 5G supporting iPhone in the upcoming year and the year after that. We also have heard rumours that apple may be getting thinner displays from Samsung for their upcoming iPhones with the Qualcomm tech with them. Samsung display is said to be the sole supplier for 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch OLED display panels and that iPhones released in 2020 will have better display technology through Samsung’s OLED panels. Samsung is said to be the only supplier of on-cell touch OLED panels for 5.4-inch and 6.7-inch devices that will be released by Apple 2020 onwards. The premium smartphone manufacturer Apple promises to provide simple privacy to its iPhone users. But according to a report the all-new iPhone 11 shares location even if it has been set disabled. The phone asks for the user’s location info even if all the app, as well as system services, has been set to never request this data. But the company says that this is due to the design raising a question in own privacy and security policy. According to Apple’s privacy policy, if the users set the location service on, their devices will automatically send the geo-tagged locations of nearby Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers info to the company that is further used to augment this crowdsourced database of Wi-Fi hotspot and cell tower locations. This can also be turned off by heading to settings > Privacy > Location Services. Then you can turn off the location services after which the device will stop showing the locations service indicator. But As per a report by KrebsonSecurity all the iPhone 11 models ask for location data even if the location services are disabled and it continues to show the location indicator icon. Many users also reported the same issue to the company after Apple released iOS 13.2.3 for iPhone 11 Pro devices. Now the company has responded that it does not see any concerns and the device is performing as designed. “We do not see any actual security implications. It is expected behaviour that the Location Services icon appears in the status bar when Location Services is enabled. The icon appears for system services that do not have a switch in Settings.”  “Granted, the latest versions of iOS give users far more granular control over the sharing of this data than in the past, especially with respect to third-party apps. And perhaps this oddity is somehow related to adding support for super-fast new WiFi 6 routers, which may have involved the introduction of new hardware. But it would be nice to know what has changed in the iPhone 11 and why, particularly given Apple’s recent commercials on how they respect user privacy choices — including location information. This post will be updated in the event Apple provides a more detailed response.” Krebs said in its report. After this Apple responded that this issue is linked to Ultra Wideband technology which is a radio technology that provides spatial awareness allowing iPhone to understand its position relative to other Ultra Wideband enabled devices.  “The location information indicator (a small, upward-facing arrow to the left of the battery icon) appears because the device periodically checks to see whether it is being used in a handful of countries for which Apple hasn’t yet received approval to deploy Ultra Wideband.” The company further explains “Ultra Wideband technology is an industry standard technology and is subject to international regulatory requirements that require it to be turned off in certain locations. iOS uses Location Services to help determine if iPhone is in these prohibited locations in order to disable Ultra Wideband and comply with regulations. The management of Ultrawide Band compliance and its use of location data is done entirely on the device and Apple is not collecting user location data.” But the real question arises that Apple said in its statement that iPhone periodically checks the UWB is being used in the country that allows the use of the radio technology. This needlessly periodic checks only drain the battery. PUBG mobile, one of the most popular games in the mobile gaming industry, however only supports 60 fps rates and does not reap the benefit from being played on phones with higher, faster display panels. This is changing, and it’s all thanks to the new Qualcomm chipset for mobiles. At the Qualcomm Snapdragon tech summit in Hawaii, Qualcomm announced the all-new Snapdragon 865 chipset, the features of which promise a lot of improvements over the previously used 855 chipset. The new chip promises higher AI integration and imaging, along with an improvement of 20 per cent in graphics. This partnered with an increased CPU performance of 25 per cent. As proof for this performance increase, Qualcomm has worked with the team of PUBG mobile to support 90fps rate gameplay. Soon, mobiles powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset will be able to run the game at 90fps. Users whose phones run with 90Hz or higher screens can take full advantage of this, meaning better gameplay for gaming phones and premium phones released next year. To take advantage of playing the game at 90fps, the user will need a phone which runs on the Snapdragon 865 processor, i.e. the best gaming experience on the most expensive phones of next year. The 90Hz game support is coming at a time when many companies are moving to 120Hz screens next year, owing to the rising popularity of High refresh rate screens. Big industry players like the OnePlus 8 Pro, the Samsung Galaxy S11, Redmi K30 and many others are promising phones with 120Hz refresh rates reducing the number of phones, which could possibly take benefit of the new 90Hz display of the game. Qualcomm has also made an announcement that PUBG mobile will get support for 10-bit HD resolution, meaning the game will support a greater visual experience. Redmi K30 has been part of the speculations and leaks on the web for quite a while now. As per the latest leaks, the phone is likely to come with a dual hole-punch display and a circular rear camera module. In the latest development, the company has now shared few images of the Redmi K30 revealing more details about its cameras along with some camera samples. Additionally, the phone has been spotted on TEENA’s website revealing its specifications also. It will make its debut on December 10. Xiaomi’s sub-brand Redmi has posted a teaser image of Redmi K30 confirming that the phone will be featuring a 64-megapixel camera. It is said to be the world’s first to sport the latest generations of Sony IMX686 sensors. The quad rear camera setup will further come with a wide-angle sensor with a 120-degree field of view, a 2cm macro lens and a depth sensor for portraits. The handset will also include an AI-powered 20-megapixel camera sensor and a depth sensor on the front for taking selfies. “Redmi K30 series is the world’s first Sony 64MP ultra-clear camera, the latest generation IMX686. ① Ultra-clear image quality of 64 million ② 1 / 1.7 ”ultra-large photosensitive element ③ Hardware-level straight out 9248 x 6944 ultra-high-resolution photos ④ 4-in-1 1.6μm large pixel,” the Weibo post said. In addition, the Chinese smartphone company also shared a number of camera samples on Weibo revealing the camera features. Also, the Chinese firm shared a video of the images clicked giving us a fair idea about the image quality Redmi K30 series will deliver. The company has shared zoomed-in images of a miniature sofa, motorcycle, eyes, mini skateboard and much more. The shared images showcase that the articles shown in the image are zoomed-in is clear and detailed. For the unknown, Redmi K30 will launch on December 10 in China however the company has not revealed that if the phone will arrive in other markets including India. There will be both 4G as well 5G variant the Redmi K30 series. As said, recently the phone got listed on the Chinese regulatory TENAA that revealed that the phone will come in a configuration of 6GB RAM with 64GB storage, 8GB RAM with 128GB storage and 12GB RAM with 256GB storage. The internal storage can be expanded up to 512GB using a microSD card. According to the listing, the handset will feature a 6.67-inch full HD+ display with 1,080×2,400 pixels of resolution. Redmi K30 is likely to be powered by an octa-core SoC clocked at 2.2GHz. The listing further reveals that the phone will be backed up by a 4,400mAh battery. The smartphone in all probability weigh 208 grams and measure 165.3×76.6×8.81mm.
