Reels Ads now being tested on Instagram, will be showing full-screen ads similar to Stories in India

To fill the gap created by the TikTok ban in India, Instagram launched Reels for creating short video clips on its platform last year. This feature allows Instagram users to create and edit 15-second multi-clip videos with audio, effects and new creative tools. Also in order to step up its competition against TikTok and Snapchat the Facebook-owned social networking app keeps on updating with the latest features. Recently it released a feature called Remix and in a new development, it has begun testing Reels ads in India. With the announcement of the commencement of testing Reels ads in India the company is intended to make capital through the feature. This functionality is now being tested in Brazil, Germany, and Australia as well as in India. Soon these features will be expanded to more markets as the company says and 90% of people follow a business on Instagram, and people are already embracing Reels to discover new creators and businesses. The Reels ads will allow businesses to express themselves creatively and find deeper connections with the audiences that matter to them. According to the company, these ads will be full-screen and immersive, similar to ads in Stories. As with organic Reels content, ads can be up to 30 seconds and people can comment, like, view, save, share and skip Reels ads. Besides this Facebook has also announced a new topic targeting options within Facebook In-Stream video, testing of Instagram Reels Ads and other ad experiences in Facebook Stories to help increase opportunities for brands to better engage with relevant audiences.” According to the company the Facebook In-Stream eligible videos are being watched by over 2 billion people every month, therefore, completing 70% of In-Stream standalone video ads views. Then Facebook wanted to provide more choice for how advertisers can utilize our In-Stream offering. So with the integration of these features, the advertisers will be able to put ads in certain video topics through Ads Manager — allowing advertisers to align their brand messaging within content that is contextually relevant to their target consumer. It will include over 20 Video Topics, like Sports, and over 700 hundred sub-topics such as Baseball, Basketball, Golf or Swimming.  For example, a baseball bat company can now place ads on topics that would be of interest to their customers, such as “Baseball.” In addition to this in the coming weeks, the social media giant will begin testing custom Sticker Ads for Facebook Stories. With this, the creators will be able to monetize their Facebook Stories with ads that look like stickers and receive a portion of the resulting revenue. Apple AirTag is stalk-proof: Reason for not using it to track pets and children

The Apple Event 2021 announced gadgets that immediately attracted technology enthusiasts. These include the innovative iPad Pro with the new Liquid Retina XDR display, the new iMac with the M1 chip, the Apple TV 4K. These devices are not only capable of performance-intensive tasks but also elevate the user experience with their unique design and stunning looks. The gadget that stole the show due to its futuristic utility valyue was the Apple AirTag. Apple AirTag is a tracking device that can be attached to small items that are likely to be misplaced. These include keys, wallets, purse, and backpacks. Apple AirTag had been extensively rumoured even before its official announcement at the Apple Event 2021. It was due to its small size and its ability to be tracked on a smartphone using the GPS. According to Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, “We’re excited to bring this incredible new capability to iPhone users with the introduction of AirTag, leveraging the vast Find My network, to help them keep track of and find the important items in their lives. With its design, unparalleled finding experience, and built-in privacy and security features, AirTag will provide customers with another way to leverage the power of the Apple ecosystem and enhance the versatility of iPhone.”

Is the AirTag protected stalk-proof?

Apple AirTag is designed to track objects that we frequently use and often misplace them. But there have emerging concerns regarding its tracking feature. Although the device is intended to be used to track non-living things, it can be used for wrongful activities like tracking a person. Being small, Apple AirTag can be placed in someone’s pocket or purse without getting noticed. To prevent the unintended use of AirTag, Apple has equipped the AirTag platform with robust anti-stalking algorithms. If someone drops an AirTag into your possession, your iPhone will immediately notify you about its presence with a message, “AirTag Found Moving With You”. However, your iPhone must be running the iOS 14.5 or later version. According to Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, “If you are concerned that there’s a risk of your being tracked you could contact law enforcement. What the [AirTag’s] serial number is used for is when you first set up your AirTag it is paired with an Apple ID along with some additional information such as your name, your email address, your date of birth, and things like that, which [Apple] could provide to law enforcement if asked for, with the proper warrants and process”.

Can Apple AirTag be used on pets?

In the Apple Event 2021, the company emphasised that Apple AirTag is designed to track objects and not people or pets. For tracking children, using an Apple Watch would be a way better idea rather than sticking an AirTag upon them. Moreover, tracking pets using an AirTag may not work at all times. The device is integrated with the Find My Network. Hence, you can track location only if an AirTag is in the range. According to Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, “If people do that, they just have to make sure that their moving pet gets into range of a device in the Find My network”. “Signal Knows Nothing”: Signal says that it is different from other “Big Tech”

Signal, a cross-platform centralized encrypted messaging service, has gained much popularity since WhatsApp brought changes to its privacy policy. According to the new policy, WhatsApp will share its data with Facebook. This step was perceived by many WhatsApp users to be infringing upon their privacy. As a result, Signal rose to the occasion and attracted many WhatsApp users as it claimed to keep their data protected. According to a tweet by Signal, “Nobody ever invited Big Tech to join a group chat, but they still hang around and know what’s going on. Signal knows nothing. Private groups protect your group names, group membership, group messages, and even the group avatar with end-to-end encryption”.

End-to-end encryption

Signal claims that the chats among the Signal users are end-to-end encrypted. The company asserts that Signal knows nothing. Unlike the “Big Tech”, the information sent or received by Signal users is not shared by any person or firm. Even the company itself does not intercept the chats. Even the group chats, names, and avatars are end-to-end encrypted. As a result, the groups and their chats remain anonymous except on the users’ devices.

Signal claims its chat groups to be secure

Signal gave the reference of the “Big Tech” to claim that the company has no involvement in the group discussions. According to Signal, the private groups are meant to remain private. Still, the “Big Tech” not only knows what’s happening in a chat group but also shares its data with other platforms. Signal asserts that it has no record of the discussions that have been carried in Signal groups. Neither are they shared with any individual or a firm. Signal revealed that it is working on a new technology that will enhance the scalability of private groups.

How Signal claims to be different from the “Big Tech”?

There are two ways to store data on a server. The way is to keep it in a plaintext format and the other is the encrypted format. Both storage methods have their pros and cons. When the data is stored in a plaintext format, the retrieving process is quite fast the data simply needs to be transferred between the server and the user’s device. However, this speed comes with a disadvantage. Since the data is present in plaintext format, it is visible on the server in its original form. Signal claims that it follows a different algorithm as compared to other companies. The company makes sure that the data stored in its servers stay in an encrypted format so that the privacy of the user remains intact. When fetched from the server, the data is converted back to its original format on the user’s device. This ensures that no one but parties involved in the chat can access the data in its raw form. Instagram adds new features to block abusive or harassing DMs

Facebook-owned photo and video-sharing social networking service, Instagram will add a new feature to prevent harassment in direct messages (DMs). This feature is in line with the company’s commitment to preventing child abuse for which it may soon release a platform for kids under 13.

Why does Instagram want to include the new feature in direct messages

Instagram has been resolving issues raised by communities across the globe regarding bullying, women safety, and child safety. Recently, some football players in the UK complained regarding the racist comments they received as direct messages in the app. The DM section does not offer automated tools to filter messages as offered by the comment section. As a result, the company wants to check the usage of the app for harassing others via direct messages. Instagram will add features to filter message requests and even block the senders. This is not the first time Facebook has stood against harassment. To prevent harassment of children through the Instagram app, Facebook has been working on a platform for kids under 13. The company has created a new team to develop a dedicated version of Instagram for kids. This platform will be launched as a separate application offering parental control features and strict regulations against the collection of kids’ data. Instagram’s terms of use permit only people above 13 to create an account. The company does not want the children to get deprived of the positive aspects of social media.

How will Instagram’s new anti-harassment feature of direct messages work?

Instagram’s new feature will allow the users to block requests from users that they find to be rude, abusive, or harassing. Moreover, they can block the senders to prevent all messages requests in the future. The app will enable the users to preemptively block new accounts that may be created by a particular sender. This step will defeat the efforts of those users who target others using multiple accounts. Instagram may also add a new tab to keep message requests from those users who he/she does not follow. This feature will keep the chats separate from message requests. Only when the user accepts a request, will it appear in the messages. Instagram may also add a filtering tool to automatically hide message requests carrying offensive text or emojis. Facebook has collaborated with anti-bullying organisations to develop a dictionary of offensive words for automated filtering of message requests. The users may customise the library and add their own words that they perceive as offensive.

What are other features that Instagram is working on?

Instagram is also planning to test a new feature that will offer the users an option to hide the like count on their posts. The company had been planning to introduce such feature on Facebook as well as Instagram for the past two years. Meanwhile, it thoroughly researched the possible impacts of the feature on the well-being of the users and the social media experience. According to Instagram, “Starting today, we’re expanding our test of private like counts globally. If you’re in the test, you’ll no longer see the total number of likes and views on photos and videos posted to Feed unless they’re your own”. Instagram will soon get a new feature by which users will be able to save their Story as a draft. The new feature will prompt the users with a pop up when they cancel their Stories. The users will have the choice to either discard the Story, save it as a Draft, or continue with the Story design process. Once saved, users can resume designing their Stories from where they left off. A tweet by Instagram says, “Something new is coming. Soon you’ll be able to finish what you started with story drafts”.
