Apple reportedly to strike $100-million deal to acquire NextVR

0

Apple hardware and software have always been designed together for the best experience possible. The iPadOS, iOS 13, and ARKit 3 took advantage of the powerful hardware in iPhone and iPad to bring the virtual world seamlessly into the real world. Now, a 9to5Mac report has revealed that Apple is planning to strike a $100-million deal to acquire Orange County-based VR firm NextVR.

Launched in 2009, NextVR has world-class partnerships with leaders in sports and entertainment, including the NBA, WWE, FOX Sports, Live Nation, and the International Champions Cup. The company also provides VR experiences for watching live events through VR headsets from Oculus Rift and Quest, HTC Vive and VIVE Pro, PlayStation, Microsoft, Google amongst many others.

Hoever, there is no official announcement made by Apple about the acquisition of NextVR, the 9to5Mac report informed that a shell company created this year that’s believed to be Apple is hiring most of the engineers from NextVR. It further added that the two companies have started telling employees who will likely need to relocate from the San Diego area to the Cupertino area.

Since long, news is rife that Apple is working on a headset capable of running both AR and VR technology. As per the rumour mills, the plans so far call for an 8K display for each eye that would be untethered from a computer or smartphone. Back in 2018, a CNet report had revealed that the project, which had been codenamed T288, is still in its early stages but is slated for release in 2020. However, the current rumours hints that an AR/VR headset could be released as early as 2021.

Recently, Apple has acquired DarkSky app that is known for its radar maps and accuracy of its weather predictions. It is likely that the tech giant will use Dark Sky’s know how to come up with its own Weather app.

“Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy. There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone,” the Dark Sky team wrote in a blog post.

A new initiative has been taken by Google Maps together with the government’s citizen engagement platform MyGov to provide information related to public food shelters and public night shelters across 30 cities in India. The company has been working with the government to provide the location of the relief centers to find essential services during the lockdown situation in the country.

Google in its statement said, “To date, across 30 cities, people can now find these locations on Google Maps, Search and Google Assistant. Users can search for ‘Food shelters in ‘ or ‘Night shelters in ‘ in any of these Google products. The service will also be made available in Hindi soon”

MyGovIndia shared the important piece of information with the public through its official Twitter handle. In a country like India, those who need the services don’t possess a smartphone so Google will also provide the information to the Jio Phone users with the help of Google Assistant. However, it could have reached the other telecom operators running in the country such as Vodafone Idea and Airtel which could prove to be more beneficial to non-Jio users also. The company is also working to expand the experience to the people in other Indian languages. The search giant has also promised to add additional shelter details on its platform such as Google Maps, Google search as well as Google Assistant in more Indian cities.

According to Google India Senior Programme Manager, Anal Ghosh “Highlighting the locations of food and night shelters on Google Maps is a step to make this information easily available to the users in need, and ensure they can avail the food and shelter services being provided by the government authorities,”. He further added, “With the help of volunteers, NGOs, and traffic authorities, we hope to convey this important information to the affected people, many of whom may not have access to a smartphone or mobile device during this time.”

Mind you! Games and applications continue to depend on high-frequency cores and Intel is pushing the frequency envelope to achieve lower latency as well as to provide the best PC gaming experience on a laptop.

The “introduction of the 10th Gen Intel Core H-series mobile platform extends Intel’s gaming leadership, delivering desktop-calibre performance in a mobile form factor and breadth of choice with more than 100 laptop designs launching this year, including more than 30 thin-and-light systems. The new platform is optimized for enthusiasts and creators by delivering the fastest frequency in the industry with 5 GHz across the majority of the volume which will deliver amazing game play and rich creation for users,” said Fredrik Hamberger, general manager of the premium and gaming laptop segments at Intel.

Wondering why the 10th Gen Intel Core H-series mobile platform is important? Well gamers are moving increasingly toward mobile systems and they care about the flexibility of gaming where they want to as much as they do the raw performance of their systems, ranking processor speed in their top three most important features.

The unlocked 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10980HK processor powers the ultimate laptops for gamers and creators, allowing further customization, optimization and tuning of the CPU’s performance.

On comparing 10th Gen Intel Core i9-10980HK processor with a three-year-old system, we find out that the i9-10980HK delivers up to 54% more frames per second in gaming for even better playability across top titles. It gives up to 44% better overall performance for faster, more responsive productivity users can feel and nearly two times faster 4K video rendering and export making it faster and easier to create and share.

The 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10750H processor with up to 5.0 GHz3 Turbo is purpose-built for enthusiast gamers and creators demanding optimized performance.

Meanwhile, the Intel Foundation will provide $4 million to support coronavirus relief efforts in communities where the company has significant presence like in the US, Costa Rica, India, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico and Vietnam. The $4 million donation will be distributed to community foundations and organizations that are focused on food security, shelter, medical equipment and small-business support. For the matching donations, Intel has identified strategic organizations unique to each major Intel site. Beneficiaries include food banks, school districts and children’s hospitals.

Coronavirus outbreak: Google Maps pushes up ‘Takeaway’, ‘Delivery’ buttons to make life easy

0
As more and more people are practising social distancing amid the Coronavirus pandemic, Google Maps app has now pushed up new shortcut button that shows nearby stores offering ‘Takeaway’ or ‘Delivery’ services right atop its homepage in order to make life of its users easy while they remain at homes.
Google Maps’ ‘Takeout’ and ‘Delivery’ shortcut buttons can be seen alongside the already visible Hotels, Coffee, Restaurants, Gas stations, etc. Mind you! These buttons were hidden earlier but now have been pushed up for the users. On clicking these buttons, a Google Maps user will easily order food by being at home.
The two shortcut buttons are accessible for both iOS and Android users in the US, UAE, France and few other countries. However, we are yet to find out when these buttons in Google Maps will work in India.
Besides this, Google has designed its network to perform during times of high demand during this time of coronavirus outbreak. The tech giant has witnessed more usage of products like Hangouts Meet, and different usage patterns in products like YouTube, making it able to handle peak traffic levels.
Google’s network consists of a system of high-capacity fiber optic cables that encircle the globe, under both land and sea, connecting our data centers to each other, and to you. Traffic flows over its dedicated network, optimized for speed and reliability until the tech giant hands it off to more than 3,000 internet service providers (ISPs) in 200+ countries and territories for local delivery—the “last mile”—using hundreds of points of presence and thousands of edge locations around the world.
According to a Google blog post, “As more and more businesses rely on connecting an at-home workforce to maintain productivity, we’ve seen surges in the use of Google Meet, our video conferencing product, at a rate we’ve never witnessed before. Over the last few weeks, Meet’s day-over-day growth surpassed 60%, and as a result, its daily usage is more than 25 times what it was in January. Despite this growth, the demand has been well within the bounds of our network’s ability.”
Google is also providing easy access to authoritative information from health authorities alongside new data and visualizations. The tech giant has worked with relevant agencies and authorities to roll out a website—available at google.com/covid19—focused on education, prevention and local resources. People can find state-based information, safety and prevention tips, search trends related to COVID-19, and further resources for individuals, educators and businesses.
Moreover, Google is also supporting coronavirus fact-checking and verification efforts. The tech giant has provided $6.5 million in funding to fact-checkers and non-profits fighting misinformation around the world, with an immediate focus on coronavirus.

Music streaming war: Apple Music trailed behind Spotify in 2019

0

As the global online music streaming subscriptions increased to 32% year-on-year (YoY) reaching 358 million subscriptions in CY 2019, analysts at the Counterpoint Research have revealed that Apple Music is second after Spotify in total market share throughout the CY 2019. While Spotify secured 31% of the total revenue and 35% of total paid subscribers across the globe, Apple Music gained 24% of total streaming revenues and a 19% share of the total paid subscriptions securing a second spot.

However, Apple’s total subscription base actually grew 36% year-over-year due to the Cupertino-based tech giant’s high focus on its services segment.

Apple Music is making improvements in its app like the introduction of night mode, curated playlists to target a group,” said Abhilash Kumar, Researh Analyst at Counterpoint.

Talking about the top performers, Kumar added, “Spotify maintained its top spot with the help of promotional activities like free Spotify Premium for three months, price cuts, customized campaigns like Spotify and a focus on exclusive content.”

Besides Spotify and Apple Music, Amazon Music secured the third place as its subscriptions reached a 15% share in 2019 as against 10% in 2018. As per the Counterpoint Research, “Amazon Music has been trying lossless music and is creating its own niche where it competes with Tidal.”

It seems that tech giants like Apple, Google and Amazon have started focusing on music streaming and have sufficient cash at their disposal to give stiff competition to Spotify. The research further added, “Music streaming platforms are even following a two-step approach to gain subscribers, first registering them to their platform as free users by means of excellent advertising campaigns and secondly pitching them with attractive offers to transfer them to become paying subscribers.”

Asserting that increasing paid subscriptions is of prime importance for music streaming platforms, Counterpoint Research added that more than 80% of music streaming revenue came from paid subscriptions. The rest came from advertisements and partnerships with brands and telcos.

The increase in subscription base is also driven by the availability of exclusive content like podcasts, originals which attracted people towards the platform and eventually turned them as subscribers. Moreover, promotional activities like price cuts in subscriptions in emerging markets, bundled offers from telcos added to the growth.

Researchers at Counterpoint believe that online music streaming subscriptions is likely to grow more than 25% YoY to exceed 450 million subscriptions by the end of calendar year 2020.

Witness the Super Pink Moon of 2020 on April 8 in India: How to watch the Supermoon

The next biggest and the brightest supermoon of the year is going to be witnessed on April 8. But unfortunately in India, the supermoon will be visible during the daylight at 08.05 AM IST and 2.35 AM GST. Nonetheless, should not be very disappointed about this because you can witness the live-action through a Livestream.

The April Moon is traditionally known as the Pink Moon and this year the Supermoon will be observed on April 8 which means it would be called Super Pink Moon. However, the people in India will now be able to view as there will be daylight but the moon watchers can witness this phenomenon in the country via Livestream.

What is a supermoon?

A supermoon is a full moon or a new moon that comes closest while orbiting around the planet earth so it appears slightly larger than the apparent size as viewed from Earth. Technically it is known as perigee-syzygy (of the Earth-Moon-Sun system) or a full (or new) Moon around perigee. It is also associated with both oceanic and crustal tides that lead to this phenomenon. The term supermoon was coined by the astrologer Richard Nolle. According to him “a new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee). In short, Earth, Moon and Sun are all in a line, with the Moon in its nearest approach to Earth.”

Why is it known as Pink Moon?

The full moon in the month of April is termed as the Pink Moon. It is also called the first full moon of the spring season. The pink moon does not mean that the earth’s satellite will become or glow pink in the night skies. This means that the full Moon is going to be the biggest as well as the brightest full moon of the year. According to a periodical published by Almanac “April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata — commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox — which also went by the name moss pink.” The Pink Moon is basically the onset of the spring season. It is also referred to as sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon. The last time this phenomenon was witnessed between March 9 and March 11.

How to watch the Livestream of the event in India?

This year it will be visible on April 8 after the sunset on April 7 in India. But in some other regions, it will be visible on April 7 after the sunset. So it will appear in the country during the day time which means the people in India will not be able to witness the phenomena. But the moon watch should not be disappointed as they can still watch the Super Pink Moon through an online live event. Slooh will be webcasting the upcoming supermoon live on their YouTube channel. Also, Virtual Telescope will also be hosting the live streams of supermoons on their YouTube channel.
