Google Play Store removed 85 adware-laden apps from its store

2

Google has removed 85 problematic apps from its Play Store. This development came immediately after when Trend Micro exposed that these apps were hiding adware inside them. Google was informed that the majority of these apps were camouflaged as photography apps and games and were downloaded more than 8 million times.

As per Ecular Xu, mobile threat response engineer at Trend Micro said, “We found another example of adware’s potential real-life impact on Google Play. Trend Micro detects this as AndroidOS_Hidenad.HRXH. It isn’t your run-of-the-mill adware family: Apart from displaying advertisements that are difficult to close, it employs unique techniques to evade detection through user behavior and time-based triggers.”

After downloading the app every time the user unlocks the device the adware will carry out quite a lot of tests before it performs its routines. Firstly it will compare the current time of the device’s system time with the help of timestamp stored as install time. After that, it compares the network time (queried via RESTful API) with the help of timestamp stored as networkInstallTime. With this, the app will be able to verify if it has been installed on the device with the default delay time configured to 30 minutes. The blog post says, “To a certain extent, using network time can evade time-based detection techniques or triggers employed by traditional sandboxes, as the app’s time settings can be configured by simply using networkInstallTime.”

After 30 minutes the app will then hide its icon and create a shortcut on the device’s home screen.  This would prevent the app from being uninstalled by dragging and dropping its icon to the Uninstall section of the screen. In order to avoid this, the app brings into play Java reflection that will allow the apps to inspect or to modify the behavior of the app and encodes the API strings in base64.

The app also uses one more Broadcast Receiver to detect if the user has unlocked its device. Once detected it will start displaying advertisements on the screen. Besides this it also tests the last ad shown on the screen so that it does not displays the same advertisements too often

“While the apps do have actual functionalities of the applications they are posing as, these ads are shown in full screen. Users are forced to view the whole duration of the ad before being able to close it or go back to the app itself. Moreover, the frequency of ads being displayed can be remotely configured by the fraudster (the default is five minutes), so it could exacerbate the nuisance for users.”

With the fresh beta update, WhatsApp now shows “WhatsApp for Facebook” branding

0

Popular messaging app WhatsApp keeps on getting new features every now and then that makes it more user-friendly. Lately, the instant messaging app has rolled out a new fingerprint unlock feature that uses the phone’s fingerprint sensor to show messages. The company has rolled out the new feature for the iOS devices and now it has brought the feature to the Android beta users. But before that, we also reported that the social media giant Facebook is planning to add its name to Instagram as well as on WhatsApp. Facebook will rebrand both the apps as “Instagram from Facebook” and “WhatsApp from Facebook”.

So the new development is that the company has finally come up with another new update for the Android beta users. In a big change, the company has at last changed the name of the popular messaging app. Facebook-owned Whatsapp now and will be known as “WhatsApp from Facebook”.

Before introducing the new branding for WhatsApp the company first brought this change to Instagram that the social media brand also acquired a few years ago. Identical to WhatsApp the photo-sharing app now also displays “Instagram from Facebook” branding. The new branding WhatsApp from Facebook is now noticeable at the bottom of the settings menu.

In order to improve both the apps, the company has taken many steps over the past year.  However this it, not the first time the company has made such a move, the company made use of similar branding for its supplementary products similar to Workplace. The workplace is the company’s work venture chat tool. To add its name to Instagram and Whatsapp has been shocking and puzzling that reflects the autonomy that the units have operated under the Social media platform’s regulations.

Before this change, the company also rolled out another new update in which now the user will be able to unlock the app using their device’s fingerprint sensor that we mentioned earlier. The new update arrives with Android beta version 2.19.221 that comes disabled by default. To allow it the users can head to settings option available with the app where they can add a layer of protection to their app chats in order to make it more secure and private. All they have to do is go to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Fingerprint lock. The new feature is made available for the device that runs on Android Marshmallow or higher and also comes with a fingerprint scanner.

Once enabling the Fingerprint lock the user needs to draw on fingerprint authentication to unlock WhatsApp. The user can select from an automatic lock option as per their preference. When the user selects this option he/she will be asked to confirm their identity by using the fingerprint authentication in order to open or close the app.

Pokémon Sword and Shield trailer released will come with new attacks and abilities

Pokémon Sword and Shield will release on Nintendo Switch on November 15. Nintendo has released a new trailer of the Pokémon Sword and Shield. The trailer gives us a glimpse of the new battles mechanics that will be introduced in the game. The new abilities will come with GalarianWeezing’s Neutralizing Gas that is basically a Gas that will be used to neutralize the abilities of the Pokemon, which will be present on the battlefield along with those associated with the failure of poor Rotom’s Levitate. However, it is now sure what will happen if the two GalarianWeezings moves on to the floating heads.

Similarly, in the latest trailer, the Corviknight will arrive with a Hidden Ability called Mirror Armor that will permit it to produce any stat-lowering effects back at its rivals.

In its blog, the Pokemon company confirmed that some Pokemon will come up with rare Abilities known as Hidden Abilities that are dissimilar to their common abilities.

“In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, it seems that Pokémon caught in Max Raid Battles might have these Hidden Abilities. Plus, there’s also a chance that you’ll encounter a special Pokémon capable of Gigantamaxing in Max Raid Battles! While extremely rare, by attempting many different battles, there’s a chance you could even encounter a Pokémon that can Gigantamax…and also has a Hidden Ability!”

The trailer also reveals that the first new held item that is Room service will lower the speed of the Pokemon when it is holding it for a period withing Trick Room. To help users filter out unwanted and abusive messages Twitter is testing a new feature

0

Microblogging social media app Twitter is testing a new feature that will now allow the user to sort out unnecessary messages from the Direct Message inbox. At present, the company permits the user to set their Direct Message inbox open to get messages from any person. Other than this it also allows scores of useless messages that consist of abusive posts. In order to solve this issue, the user can adjust their settings so that they can only send as well as receive the messages from who they follow.

As per a report, this feature will not work for everybody as some people like reporters need to have an open inbox with the intention of having private conversations and receiving tips. So twitter is now conducting a test in which the new feature will separate out unwanted messages together with disgusting content or else spam to a different tab.

The Message Requests section will now come with a button tab where the user will be able to access all the messages from the people they don’t follow as well as the recently filtered messages. To even read these messages the user would now have to click on the Show button that will keep them from pouring out unnecessary messages that sometimes arrive suddenly when the user leaves their inbox open.

The report says, “And even upon viewing this list of filtered messages, all the content itself isn’t immediately visible.”

If the user receives a message that is hateful the message preview will state that the message has been hidden in because it may contain offensive content. This feature will allow the user to make their mind up if they wish to unlock the message or else delete it. This will be helpful for those who want to keep their inbox open.

The new feature is identical to the Facebook messenger message requests feature that was released in 2017, where the user will only see the messages from the people they are friends with and the messages received from outsiders will be transported to a separate Message Requests region. The spam, as well as problematic posts, are relocated to another separate Filter section.

To recall last week Twitter was also found testing another new feature called Snooze that will allow its user to the mute notification within the app for a certain period of time. The snooze feature is being set as a bell symbol on the top right corner of the notifications tab. When the user taps the bell button the app will open a bottom sheet with Snooze duration options. Once the user chooses the preferred snooze duration, Twitter will stop sending push notifications for a particular time period.

Google has acquired the learning app Socratic, released on iOS

0

Socratic the mobile learning app that the technology giant Google acquired last year has now got an upgrade. The app now employs AI technology that will be helpful for high school and university students, when they are doing schoolwork while they are outside the classroom. The app directs them via available resources and also helps them identify the basic concepts that will guide them to answer the questions. Currently, the revamped Socratic app is available on the App Store for iOS users and will arrive for Android users in November.

Socratic, Engineering Manager Shreyans Bhansali said in a blog post, “In building educational resources for teachers and students, we’ve spent a lot of time talking to them about challenges they face and how we can help. We’ve heard that students often get “stuck” while studying. When they have questions in the classroom, a teacher can quickly clarify—but it’s frustrating for students who spend hours trying to find answers while studying on their own.”

For the students, this app will be guiding them to solve tough mathematics problems. This app will help the students to take the picture of a question and also allows them to ask the app a question with their voice. The app will then get the most important resources across the web. If the user is under pressure to understand a textbook content or else handouts they can also click the photo of the page and the app will offer them the alternative details of the same concepts.

Socratic takes a problem, X-rays it, and extracts the underlying concepts.

As we mentioned earlier, the app helps the users to solve tough mathematic questions to do this the company has designed and trained the algorithms. This helps the students to work on the complex problems and the app automatically discovers the relevant underlying concepts. The app finds out important videos, concept explanations as well as online resources that will be of assistance in solving their inquiries. The app also breaks down the concept into smaller and easy to understand lessons.

According to Google, they have worked with educators in order to create subject guides on more than one thousand higher education as well as high school topics like Biology, Physics, Algebra, Geometry, Fiction, Non-Fiction and so on. The app also lets the students revise their topics via key points and then go deeper with helpful resources on the web.

After Apple, Google, Amazon, and Facebook now Microsoft admits that its contractors listen to Skype and Cortana recordings

0

Technology giant Microsoft listens to the voice recording of its users collected by Skype’s automated translation feature as well as the Cortana voice assistant. As per a new report by Motherboard, it reveals that audio snippets of users having personal talks like weight loss relationship issues and more are being manually reviewed by the company’s contractors. In fact, a company’s contractor even shared a few recording files with the publication that the users can be heard having an intimate discussion.

We should mention that this is not the first case of such a thing happening. Earlier Apple, Google, Facebook as well as Amazon were also found to be listening to voice recording of the users that were captured by the voice assistant devices. But now all the mentioned brands have either suspended the human review processes or have come up with an opt-out option.

Microsoft has now even admitted that its employees listen to audio recordings and it even updated its privacy policy that states that the company’s contractors may possibly listen to the audio recordings that Cortana or Skype captures. The issue was reported after Motherboard discovered that human employees were found to be listening to audio recordings of both the services. These included sensitive as well as personal conversations of the users derived from a cache of leaked documents, screenshots and audio recordings.

Previously both Microsoft, as well as Skype privacy policy, did not mention in its FAQ that its contractors may hear the audio of the customers that is captured with the intention of improving the service. Microsoft has also updated both pages and others on its website.

The company’s privacy policy now reads “Our processing of personal data for these purposes includes both automated and manual (human) methods of processing. Our automated methods often are related to and supported by our manual methods. For example, our automated methods include artificial intelligence (AI), which we think of as a set of technologies that enable computers to perceive, learn, reason, and assist in decision-making to solve problems in ways that are similar to what people do.”

Even the Skype’s FAQ now reads, “This may include transcription of audio recordings by Microsoft employees and vendors, subject to procedures designed to protect users’ privacy, including taking steps to de-identify data, requiring non-disclosure agreements with vendors and their employees, and requiring that vendors meet the high privacy standards set out in European law and elsewhere.”

On top of that, Cortana’s support page now also has a similar paragraph as does Microsoft support page. The company also does not allow its users to delete the recordings that are made with a dedicated online tool. Oppo Reno 2 with quad rear cameras and 20X zoom will launch on 28 August, first in India

Yes, you read that right. Oppo Reno 2 with 20X zoom and quad-camera setup located on the rear is slated to launch in India first. The launch date has been set as August 28 and consumers in India will be the first one to get a glimpse of the new smartphone. From the graphic that came with the save the date details, the Oppo Reno 2 seems to be sporting the same shark fin type pop-up selfie camera. This was previously seen on Oppo Reno first edition.

The teaser graphic does say that this smartphone is touted to support up to 20X zoom, which seems to be hybrid zoom since the word optical is not mentioned anywhere. When compared to Oppo Reno first edition, it had only 10X zoom capability while the new one will get 20X. Not much has been said about the phone except a few rumoured reports came out some time ago. At the moment a vertically placed quad cameras setup at the back of the Oppo Reno 2 with extreme zoom and shark fin type selfie camera module are confirmed. Also, since one can see the night sky, the emphasis should be on night photography with the Oppo Reno 2.

If we go by rumours, then the technical specifications of Oppo Reno 2 will include a minimum of Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 CPU with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. Battery should be over 4,100 mAh and the smartphone will be available in at least 2 colour options to begin with. A third colour option might be added at a later stage. The rumoured price of the smartphone is being touted as Rs 42,999. Looking at the current generation of Oppo Reno, which retails for 39,999, a price of almost Rs 43,000 does not seem to be a bad one for a phone with 20X zoom support.

Also, a full edge to edge touchscreen measuring 6.5-inches or higher (diagonally) is what the Oppo Reno 2 might fetch. The operating system on this mobile is also going to be Android 9 Pie out of the box with Oppo’s own OS skin on top of it. The smartphone is first going to launch in India, as said. The dedication towards the country shows how important the Indian market is for the Chinese company. More details about the camera sensors should also come to light in the coming few days.

Microsoft releases new security patch for vulnerabilities in Remote Desktop Services

Technology giant Microsoft has rolled out a set of security patches for Remote Desktop Services. The latest August security update promises to fix four wormable vulnerabilities that could allow the attackers to extend malware without the need of user’s permission like the previously BlueKeep and WannaCry vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities are listed as CVE-2019-1181CVE-2019-1182CVE-2019-1222, and CVE-2019-1226.

The August security update promises to fix 93 vulnerabilities that include 29 critical issues and 64 rated as important. As per the company, the affected versions of Windows are Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, Windows Server 2012, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 R2, and all supported versions of Windows 10, including server versions. Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Windows Server 2008 are not affected, nor are the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) itself affected. The vulnerabilities were exposed to the company during the hardening of Remote Desktop Services as a part of Microsoft’s persistent focus on increasing the security of their products. The company stated that at the present time they do not have any evidence that all the mentioned vulnerabilities were known to any third party.

Microsoft Security Response Centre (MSRC) Director of Incident Response, Simon Pope in his blog post said, “It is important that affected systems are patched as quickly as possible because of the elevated risks associated with wormable vulnerabilities like these, and downloads for these can be found in the Microsoft Security Update Guide. Customers who have automatic updates enabled are automatically protected by these fixes. By default, Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro users will be updated automatically.”

Along with security patches, the new update also comes with preloaded Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, and Online Services as well as Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office services, Visual Studio, and Microsoft Dynamics along with added software packages.

“There is partial mitigation on affected systems that have Network Level Authentication (NLA) enabled. The affected systems are mitigated against ‘wormable’ malware or advanced malware threats that could exploit the vulnerability, as NLA requires authentication before the vulnerability can be triggered. However, affected systems are still vulnerable to Remote Code Execution (RCE) exploitation if the attacker has valid credentials that can be used to successfully authenticate.” Simon Pope further added.

The new August Security Update claims to patch seven remote code execution bugs as well that distress the Chakra scripting engine. It also comes with two fixes for Microsoft’s Hyper-V and two in Word. The update also fixes the dodgeCVE-2019-1162 in the CTF protocol that subsists in all the versions of Windows including Windows XP.  The users can download the latest security release on their systems or can also download manually via Microsoft’s Security Update Guide.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau confirms launch of a 5G smartphone in 2019

0

Earlier this year lot of screenshots and announcements from OnePlus did showcase the power of 5G on a OnePlus smartphone. Some of it was leaked information, but now the company CEO Pete Lau has gone on record and confirmed that a new ‘Flagship’ smartphone by them will have 5G capability.

As always, OnePlus launches two series of smartphones each year. This year the Chinese company has already launched the OnePlus 7 and OnePlus 7 Pro with Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 CPU. And now it is the turns of the ‘T’ models. The company is getting ready to launch the OnePlus 7T and OnePlus 7T Pro in mid-October. Some leaks have put the date as 15th October for the launch event. Sources close to Gadget Bridge have confirmed that the event will happen in USA and India at the same time. It will happen in the same manner as it happened for the OnePlus 7 Pro launch with events happening simultaneously in USA and India.

This time three versions of the smartphones are expected OnePlus 7T, OnePlus 7T Pro and OnePlus 7T Pro (5G Ready), which should be the flagship model by the company. This is the phone Pete Lau has been talking about in various reports. Before this, we have seen Samsung launch 5G models of its flagship smartphones, too.

Not much is known about the OnePlus 7T or 7T pro. But whatever is known is good information. In all likelihood, the OnePlus 7T series will carry a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, the higher version could have the 855+ chipset inside with 5G. RAM options will start from 6GB and go up to 12GB. Storage for the top model will be maxed out at 512GB. Also, triple rear cameras will be seen on all models with a pop-up selfie camera.

With this, the company is expected to launch the OnePlus TV as well. Which the company has already spoken about in its blog post. They are planning to launch the OnePlus TV since there is a demand by OnePlus fans and the market for a good budget smart TV is growing. Although there is no confirmation of the TVs launch date, it should be around the same time the ‘T’ versions of OnePlus are launched. The TV is expected to support 4K resolution as well as run Android for TV. OnePlus TV will be launching in four sizes including 43-inches, 55-inches, 65-inches, and 75-inches. Bluetooth 5.0 support will also be seen in this smart TV.

2019 iPhones name surfaced online, tipped as iPhone 11 Pro

3

There may be some time left in the launch of Apple’s iPhone’s new models, but the internet is already flooded with rumours, leaks, and details about the upcoming smartphones. As we all know that Apple is planning to launch three new models of the upcoming iPhone 11 smartphones. All the three models will be powered by Apple’s A13 Bionic chip coupled with the latest Taptic Engine.

In addition to this, the three smartphones by Apple will be launched with a Lightning port designed for audio and charging. As per the rumours, the company is expected to name its upcoming devices like the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11R and the iPhone 11 Max or the iPhone XI, the iPhone XIR and the iPhone XI Max.

Now according to a fresh report, the Cupertino, California based company is planning to change the name of the new series of iPhones. As per a report by CoinX who is famous for predicting Apple’s news, have said the new iPhone will be called iPhone Pro. According, to their Twitter account they tweeted Pro for iPhone? Crazy naming schemes over the past few years. this suggests that the company could change the name of its new model of the iPhone 2019.  So it can be easily guessed it can be on the same lineup as iPad Pro, Mac Pro, and MacBook Pro.

However, they did not reveal the accurate names of the upcoming devices but it can be easily assumed that the 2019 model of the iPhone could be named as iPhone 11, the iPhone 11R and the iPhone 11 Pro instead of the iPhone 11 Max. The device is expected to arrive with a triple rear camera set up that includes a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and an ultra-wide-angle lens.

As per previous reports the new iPhone models, namely the iPhone 11, the iPhone 11R and the iPhone 11 Max or the iPhone 11 Pro are rumoured to be featuring a 5.8-inch OLED display, a 6.1-inch LCD display and a 6.5-inch OLED display, in that order. OnePlus’ first smart TV will be called OnePlus TV, company confirms

0

Chinese technology company OnePlus is known to be working on its own TV since September last year when the company’s CEO and co-founder Pete Lau announced that the brand will be entering the smart TV segment. But ever since then, nothing new was announced. However, today OnePlus has officially announced the name of its first offering in the segment: OnePlus TV. Other than this, the company has also revealed the logo of the lineup.

The company has also written a blog post on OnePlus forum where it revealed the design philosophy behind the new logo that has been shared. OnePlus has said, “The gap between the “+” and the logo edge is twice as the one between the “+” and the letter “T”, which is also twice as the one between “T” and “V”. We were inspired by classic geometric progression, which can be seen from so many classic art forms, such the ancient Hindu symbol, the mandala, and the famous ancient Greek temple, Heraion of Argos. And looking closer, you can tell that the we’ve used the same thickness for both logo and the letters to ensure an aesthetics of “symmetry” and “unity”.”

In the same post, the company has also explained why it opted to name its upcoming smart TV as OnePlus TV. It said, “Yes, we are going to call our very first smart TV product “OnePlus TV” – simple yet to-the-point – as we believe there’s no other name that can best represent our value, vision and pride than naming it with our own brand.”

We should mention that last year, the Chinese technology company had started the ‘OnePlus TV: You Name It’ contest. As a part of the contest, the company’s fans were given a chance to name the upcoming television. The company had also said that the winners of the contest will win an award and the one who will be the first to suggest a name for the offering will get a “big prize”.

OnePlus TV 2

It is worth pointing out that a few days back, a report had surfaced online that said that OnePlus will be launching multiple smart TVs and its offerings will be available in four sizes including 43-inches, 55-inches, 65-inches, and 75-inches.

While it is known that the OnePlus’ new offering will be an Android TV, as of now, it is not clear if it will come with OxygenOS. Speculations also suggest that the TVs will have support for Bluetooth 5.0 and 4K HDR displays. In India, the OnePlus TV is expected to be sold on Amazon exclusively as the company has had a partnership with the e-commerce platform ever since it launched its first smartphone in the country.

WhatsApp now brings Fingerprint authentication to Android beta users

Popular messaging app WhatsApp keeps on getting new features every now and then that makes it more user-friendly. This time the instant messaging app has rolled out a new feature where the user will be able to unlock WhatsApp using the smartphone’s fingerprint sensor. The company first brought this feature to the iOS devices now the fingerprint feature has arrived to Android beta users.

The new update bears Android beta version 2.19.221 that comes disabled by default. To enable it the users can head to setting option available with the app where they can add a layer of protection to their app chats making it more secure and private. This can be done by going to WhatsApp Settings > Account > Privacy > Fingerprint lock. The new feature is made available for the device that runs on Android Marshmallow or higher and also comes with a fingerprint scanner.

After enabling the Fingerprint lock the user further needs to bring into play fingerprint authentication to unlock WhatsApp. The user can choose from an automatic lock option as per their requirement. When the user selects this option he/ she will be asked to confirm their identity by using the fingerprint authentication in order to open or close the app.

In the Android version the user can choose from ‘automatically lock’ options- immediately, after 1 minute, and after 30 minutes. On the other hand, the iOS app comes with an extra option of 15 minutes that the Android version does not include.

In addition to this, the instant messaging platforms also come with a fresh option of ‘show content in notifications’. This feature will let the user make their mind up if they would like to see or hide messages as well as sender preview while the fingerprint lock is enabled. If the user does not enable the said feature they would be able to respond to the messages from the notification itself as well as come back with the WhatsApp calls. This is possible because the Fingerprint feature is enabled when the users want to lock or unlock the app.
