0

There have been numerous call-recording apps across the globe, but now news is rife that Google is prepping up to introduce call recording and transcribing service to its Pixel smartphone users. As per a report by XDA Developers, an APK breakdown has revealed that the Google Phone app’s newest version 44 has a call recording feature.

If we believe this report to be true, a user will be able to access this recording feature before taking an incoming or outgoing call by simply pressing the “Record” button that is located next to the “Hold” button. This means that the minute one taps on the “Record” button, the conversation will be recorded automatically. It can be stopped by tapping the “Record” button again. This feature will be reachable directly from the call log. The conversation recorded will be saved as a as a .wav file in call’s history from where you can share and play it. However, it is rumoured that this recording feature will be functional on Google Android Pie OS.

Besides this, another report by 9To5Google has hinted that Google Pixel smartphone could soon get a feature to transcribe calls. It shared a single string putting light that the recorded calls could be transcribed as well.

Only once these features will be rolled out, we will get to see how these call recording and transcribing feature on Google Pixel smartphones will come comply with the local call recording laws.

Off-Facebook Activity tool now available worldwide: Here’s everything you should know

0

With an aim to give people more transparency and control over the data that other apps and websites share with Facebook, the California-based social networking service has now made Off-Facebook Activity tool available to people across the globe.

“Other businesses send us information about your activity on their sites and we use that information to show you ads that are relevant to you. Now you can see a summary of that information and clear it from your account if you want to,” Mark Zuckerberg said in a blog post on Facebook.

Off-Facebook Activity marks a new level of transparency and control. Wondering how it works? Well, you must be aware that what you do online generates data. For instance: When you’re searching for a destination for summer holidays or buying a new pair of shoes, businesses share that data with Facebook. Eventually what happens is that data can be used to connect businesses with the right audience to show ads related to their search. With Off-Facebook Activity, you can now see a summary of information Facebook get about your activity on other apps and websites.

A Facebook users also has option to disconnect Off-Facebook Activity from your account, but this doesn’t mean that the person will stop seeing ads. According to Facebook, a user will still see the same number of ads, but they are likely to be less personalized. A post on Facebook has also revealed that, “The information you disconnect will no longer be connected to your account. This data can still be used without being linked to an individual user to allow us to let businesses know how their website, app or ads are performing.”

On an average a smartphone user has more than 80 apps and uses nearly around 40 of them every month, it can be really difficult for people to keep track of who has information about them and what it’s used for. Facebook believes providing people with greater transparency and control will ultimately have a positive, long-term effect on businesses using Facebook.

Earlier this month, Facebook also rolled out an update of its Ad Library to provide people with more transparency and control over the political and social issue ads that they witness on the social networking site.

First launched in May 2018, the Ad Library is a public archive that allows people to see all the ads politicians and campaigns are running on Facebook and Instagram and those that have run in the past.

Samsung Galaxy S20, Galaxy S20 Plus

According to various reports that have surfaced online, Samsung’s new offering will sport a 120Hz display and it will have four camera sensors on its back panel. A report in XDA Developers, which detailed about the display of Galaxy S20, said that users will only be able to use the 120Hz refresh rate at FHD+ resolution. In addition to this, the rear cameras are also getting an upgrade and Samsung Galaxy S20 is expected to sport a 12MP primary sensor, a 64MP telephoto lens, and a 12MP ultra-wide camera. The bigger sibling, Samsung Galaxy S20 Plus, will reportedly come with a fourth 3D ToF sensor. As far as the screen sizes of the smartphones go, according to tipster Ishan Agarwal, the S20 will sport a 6.2-inch display, while S20 Plus will come with a 6.7-inch screen. Apple registered quarterly revenue of $91.8 billion, which is a 9 per cent hike as compared to the same quarter of fiscal 2019. In 2019, the Cupertino-based tech giant had launched Apple Arcade, Apple TV+, Apple News+ and Apple Card to provide its customers with the highest-quality services along with an unparalleled commitment to privacy and security, and offers creators and developers the opportunity to bring their creative visions to people around the world.

“In 2020, Apple will continue to delight customers, collaborate with developers and creators, offering new levels of creativity, choice and innovation across original series and films, podcasts, music, news, games, apps, payments and unique experiences only Apple can deliver,” as per the official statement by the tech giant.

This makes India the second-largest smartphone market in the world.

It is expected that the demand for smartphones will accelerate due to more and more people opting smartphone over a feature phone. This is also resulting in steep competition amongst the makers to provide the best design and features to lure smartphone users.

Apple’s online sales in India likely to make inroads in Q3 this year

0

India’s fast-evolving smartphone market has long attracted foreign players. And now, TechCrunch has reported that Apple online store is expected to start functioning in the third of this year. As per the sources, it is likely that the Cupertino-based tech company may set up the logistics store by July and September.

Currently, Apple is selling its products in India by collaborating with third-party offline retailers and major E-commerce platforms like Flipkart, Amazon India.

In 2019, reports had revealed that Apple’s decision to introduce online stores in India was influenced by the Narendra Modi government’s decision to ease the 30 per cent mandatory local sourcing norm in single-brand retail (SBRT). As per the government, online sales will result in creation of jobs in logistics, digital payments, customer care, training and product skilling.

“We love our customers in India and we’re eager to serve them online and in-store with the same experience and care that Apple customers around the world enjoy,” Apple had told IANS last year.

What has to be noted that there was never a revelation regarding the time period when the entire process of setting up the online and brick-and-mortar stores will take place. However, several reports had hinted that the online sales would likely start in the Q1.

Apple has also announced financial results for its fiscal 2020 first quarter ended December 28, 2019. Fuelled by strong demand for our iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models, and all-time records for Services and Wearables, the company revealed that its international sales accounted for 61 per cent of the quarter’s revenue. Apple posted quarterly revenue of $91.8 billion, an increase of 9 per cent from the year-ago quarter and an all-time record, and quarterly earnings per diluted share of $4.99, up 19 per cent, also an all-time record. International sales accounted for 61 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

“During the holiday quarter our active installed base of devices grew in each of our geographic segments and has now reached over 1.5 billion. We see this as a powerful testament to the satisfaction, engagement and loyalty of our customers — and a great driver of our growth across the board,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO.

Realme tells Xiaomi to ‘behave’ on being called a copycat brand

Recently, both the Chinese smartphone companies Xiaomi and Realme got into a tug of war on Twitter after Xioami’s copycat statement passed on Realme. Xiaomi India chief Manu Kumar Jain on Tuesday trolled its rival Realme by calling it a copycat brand and also shared a comic video. This is not the first time that both the companies clashed and got into an argument.

Earlier this month  Manu Kumar Jain, Xiaomi India CEO again started an argument by calling its Rival company Realme a copycat brand. He tweet reads, “Funny! A copy-cat brand mocks us. Later this brand brings ads & some ppl start blaming us. Most brands push ads but only Xiaomi is bashed. Because we’ve been transparent about our business model. If any journalist wants to understand our internet business, I’m happy to talk!”

Further adding fuel to this Head of Online Partner Sales at Xiaomi India shared a video via its Twitter account humiliating Realme. The tweet reads, “One of our fans sent this hilarious video about the #CopyCat brand. Fans sab jaante hain. I would say this to our friends – “Copying can only take you this far!”#नकल छोड़ो! थोड़ी अपनी #अकल लगाओ!”

The shared video is from an episode from Mr. Bean which depicting Mr. Bean as Realme, which is trying to copy the answer from his classmate during an examination. The video illustrated that Realme tried to copy all the features as well as the marketing strategies of Xiaomi.

To this took to Twitter today and tweeted, “A real innovative brand and market leader won’t behave like that. Basic dignity and ethics should be maintained no matter how insecure you are of your competitor’s growth. We will focus on making #realme the best in 2020. Rest is their choice, we don’t bother.”

Like we said earlier, this is not the first time Realme was being mocked. Last year in May Xiaomi took a jab on its rival when he lashed out at Realme 3 Pro which is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor. To this Mr Jain tweeted that Xiaomi Note 7 pro comes with at that time’s latest Snapdragon 675 chipset and the realme’s phone has an older one. To this Sheth reacted to the tweet by calling the company “insecure” and “Someone is afraid”

Madhav Sheth told IANS: “It does not suit brands to lower their corporate ethics and get into mud-slinging on social media as it only harms the overall industry sentiments. We are here to provide our users best of the experiences and Realme would rather focus on that,”

Fitbit Versa 2 Review: The fitness smartwatch for all your needs

Fitbit has been building some great products over the last couple of years. It is now a Google-owned company and we believe it can achieve even better things now. We got to play around with Fitbit Versa 2 for some time now and this is what we could make of the smartwatch.

Fitbit Versa 2 Design

To begin with, the Fitbit Versa 2 does look like most other smartwatches in the category that have a square façade. There is nothing unusual about it. However, when you look at it closely, you find subtle differences that do make it shine. For instance, the dial around the watch has just one button located on the left side. The watch face is made up of aluminium with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 on top. The right side also has a microphone.

The one we reviewed has the grey outlook, however, there is one more colour (rose gold) available in India. The screen on the Fitbit Versa 2 is touchscreen and measures 1.34-inches diagonally. The button on the side can be used to go back or if you long-press it you will waken Alexa. More about that in the next section. More design features include, two silicon straps in the box, one for small wrists and the other is for larger wrists. These easily snap on to the watch. However, do go through the in-box guide to properly put them on.

The rear of the Fitbit Versa 2 has the charging point as well as heart rate sensor. In the box users also get a newly design charging cable (USB driven), but like most smartwatches, there is no charger. The smartwatch easily snaps in place on the charging cable port. Users also have the option to buy additional colours of straps (at additional costs)

Performance

This is where the Fitbit Versa 2 excels. You get a nice clean interface on the smartwatch, which has an always-on display. The modes, features and settings are clearly marked and one can browse through with extreme ease. Things like calories burnt, steps counter (which is accurate, 99% of the times) etc can be seen on the watch itself. However, if you want to access advance features, you are in luck. The Fitbit app has brilliant features and expressions one would want to be a power user.

Amazon Alexa comes on board the Fitbit Versa 2 as well. By long pressing the function button on the side it comes to life and will display answers to all your questions. It works flawlessly. This eliminates the need to constantly take out the phone to check things. Talking about which, it is seamless to connect Fitbit Versa 2 to a smartphone. However, the initial setup does take time as the watch would generally update the firmware.

15+ goal-based exercise modes, up to 50 meters waterproof, on-screen workouts and much more is available on this smartwatch. Sleep tracking is also present in the Fitbit Versa 2. This is great to understand sleep patterns and the watch makes sure you wake up fresh. Sleep score will keep you on track to get a good night’s sleep. The data accumulated on the Fitbit app helps a lot when you visit the doctor at the time of a mishap.

Other features of the Fitbit Versa 2 include Guided breathing, Female Health tracking, notifications and quick reply that again eliminate the need of always picking up the mobile phone. Users can from the screen of the Fitbit Versa 2 easily reply to messages using quick replies on the smartwatch.

Verdict

The Fitbit Versa 2 is the smartwatch to go for if you are looking for good battery life. Oh wait, we did not talk about that. So yes, it has a long battery life. We got over 5 days of battery run time under good regular 12-14 hours of everyday use. Charge time is approximately 2 hours. The interchangeable watch faces are also a good addition to personalise your Fitbit Versa 2. At a price of Rs 20,999, the Fitbit Versa 2 is one of the best premium smartwatches out there, which can do a lot and has AI functionality in it.

Pros:

Good screen

Alexa

Elaborate app

Cons:

A larger screen would be a boon

Samsung Galaxy A41 may carry 3,500mAh battery, specification leaked

7

In 2019, Samsung unveiled some of the great-value-for-money smartphones like the Galaxy A40. And now, as eyes are set on the launch of its successor Samsung Galaxy A41, news is rife that a certification in South Korea has leaked some details related to the battery of this device. According to a report by Nashville Chatter, the certification has revealed that Samsung Galaxy A41 can possibly come equipped with a battery of 3,500mAh capacity.

If we believe this report to be true, the South Korean certification site has revealed that the model number of Samsung Galaxy A41’s battery is EB-BA415ABY. As per the report, a detailed image of the battery hints that smartphone could be coming equipped with a 3,500mAh battery.

The other specifications that rumour mills are churning is that Samsung Galaxy A41 may run on Android 10 along with 15W fast-charging system. Talking about the storage capacity, several leaks have reported that there is a possibility of 128GB of in-built storage along with a storage new One UI version.

On the camera front, it is believed that the Galaxy A41 could house a quad camera setup. It could be housing a primary lens of 48-megapixel as against Samsung Galaxy A41’s 16-megapixel main lens. The Galaxy A41’s quad camera setup is likely to have a 2-megapixel macro lens and a 25-megapixel selfie camera.

Now, coming over the leaked image of the battery pack we could not emphasis how true this 3,500mAh battery specification of Samsung A41 will be as the image is unclear. However, we are surely expecting that the battery capacity will be higher than its predecessor Samsung Galaxy A40. The Galaxy A40 has a battery capacity of 3,100mAh.

Last year, Samsung lifted curtains off its Galaxy A40 that has a 5.9-inch Infinity-U display which enables a user to see the details in everything you watch. From music videos to the latest boxset, FHD+ and Super AMOLED makes everything leap from the edge-to-edge screen.

Beside this, Samsung is all set to launch the Galaxy A51 and Galaxy A71 smartphones in India on January 29. Samsung Galaxy A51 has an Octa-core processor and up to 6GB of RAM along with 128GB internal storage, which can be expanded with a 512GB microSD card. It features 6.-inch Super AMOLED display, Exynos 9611 chipset and 4000mAh battery. On the camera front, it has Quad Cam that enables you to shoot with more perspective.

Running on Octa Core (Dual 2.2GHz + Hexa 1.8GHz), the A71, which comes in place of the Galaxy A70s, 128GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 512GB using a Micro SD card. There is a 64-megapixel camera on the Galaxy A71. It offers a 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and a battery capacity of 4,500mAh.

Google revealed dates for I/O 2020, might launch Goggle Pixel 4a

Google has announced the year’s most awaited tech event I/O 2020. The event will be hosted in  Mountain View, California that will commence from May 12 and will end on May 14. At I/O 2020 Google will be announcing new products along with new software updates for its apps.

The software technology giant Google’s CEO  Sundar Pichai took to Twitter to announce the dates for its most anticipated event I/O 2020. His tweet says, “Cosmos aligned. We’ll be back at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View for this year’s #GoogleIO on May 12-14!”

To recall last year the company introduced two Pixel phones during the same event Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL. So this year also the same is expected from the company that it will be announcing Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL t the same time Google will also release fresh Android 11 OS. Other than this Google Chrome, Maps, Search, and YouTube might also receive new updates.

In the past, we came across a report which says that this year Google is likely to launch a single variant of its mid-range Pixel smartphone called  Google Pixel 4a. But a recent report suggests that there will be multiple variants of the so-called smartphone. If reports are to be believed three codenames of upcoming Google phones Sunfish, Redfin and Bramble. Sunfish is supposed to come with a Snapdragon 730 SoC which means it will offer 4G connectivity. Whereas Redfin and Bramble are supposed to feature upper-midrange Snapdragon 765 SoC that will be offering 5G connectivity. There is a possibility that that Sunfish and Redfin might turn out to be the Pixel 4a and Pixel 4a XL. Now coming to Bramble the possibility of launching more than two phones by Google is very low.

Also last year the tech giant also introduced Google Nest Hub Max so this year it is expected to add more products in the lineup.

Vivo takes Indian Smartphone market by storm, leaves Samsung behind

1
The latest report by Counterpoint says Vivo has jumped to the second position in India
With the expanding footprint of Chinese smartphone market in India, Vivo has secured the second spot in the Indian smartphone market for the first time in the fourth quarter of the calendar year 2019.
As per the data by Counterpoint Research, Vivo has grabbed 21 per cent market share to secure the second position leaving behind Samsung that dropped down to third spot with 19 per cent market share in Q4 2019. The position was retained by Xiaomi with 27 per cent market share.
Talking about the annual smartphone shipment, Vivo registered 76 per cent annual growth in 2019. “Also, by successfully pivoting to online and aggressively positioning the S series in the offline segment with new features, it managed to make a dent in the Rs 15,000 -Rs 20,000 ($250-$300) segment,” Tarun Pathak, Associate Director, Counterpoint. Due to this, Vivo captured the second spot for the first time in India’s smartphone market.
Apart from Xiaomi, Vivo and Samsung, OPPO and Realme were other top five players in the list. While OPPO shipments almost doubled YoY in Q4 2019 owing to demand for its budget segment devices, Realme grew 255 per cent due to an aggressive go-to-market strategy.
“Chinese brands’ share hit a record 72 per cent for 2019 compared to 60 per cent a year ago. During 2019, we have seen all major Chinese players expanding their footprint in offline and online channels to gain market share. For example, Xiaomi, realme, and OnePlus have increased their offline points of sale, while brands like Vivo have expanded their online reach with Z and U series. 2019 also marked the fifth anniversary in India for some OEMs,” said another research Analyst at Counterpoint Research.
Vivo has presence in over 70,000 retail outlets across the Indian land.
Owing to the growth of the mid-tier segment of Chinese smartphone brands in India, the country’s smartphone market has left behind the US for the first time on an annual level to reach 158 million shipments in 2019 with 7% YoY growth, according to the latest research from Counterpoint’s Market Monitor service. This makes India the second-largest smartphone market in the world.
It is expected that the demand for smartphones will accelerate due to more and more people opting smartphone over a feature phone. This is also resulting in steep competition amongst the makers to provide the best design and features to lure smartphone users.

Avast caught harvesting users highly sensitive data and selling it to third parties

0

Antivirus firm Avast and it’s ancillary AVG have been found selling the data of their consumers to third parties such as Microsoft and Google. Millions of people around the world have been using the antivirus software via its company called Jumpshot. Both the software develops have been selling highly sensitive web browsing data of the users that have been caught in a joint investigation done by Motherboard and PCMag.

People use antivirus software in order to protect their data as well as privacy but Avast has been selling its user’s browsing history to third parties while exposing every click and search they have made. The previous month the company also justified their practice of collecting web histories. The company told users who have chosen to data sharing, “The data is fully de-identified and aggregated and cannot be used to personally identify or target you.”

As per the report the user’s privacy is preserved, Avast gets paid, and online marketers get a trove of “aggregate” consumer data to help them sell more products. The clients can view every click an individual is making during their browsing sessions that also includes the time down to the millisecond. The report says the collected data is not at all linked to a person’s name, email or IP address, each user history is still assigned to an identifier known as device ID, which will remain unless the user uninstalls the Avast antivirus.

For example:

Device ID: abc123x Date: 2019/12/01 Hour Minute Second: 12:03:05 Domain: Amazon.com Product: Apple iPad Pro 10.5 – 2017 Model – 256GB, Rose Gold Behavior: Add to Cart

The data is collected from a source familiar with Jumpshot’s products. As per a privacy expert Gunes Acar, “Most of the threats posed by de-anonymization—where you are identifying people—comes from the ability to merge the information with other data,” According to him companies like Amazon, Google, and branded retailers and marketing firms can amass entire activity logs on their users. But by means of Jumpshot’s data, these companies have another way of tracking the user’s digital footprints.

In December 2018, Omnicom Media Group, a major marketing provider, signed a contract to receive what’s called the “All Clicks Feed,” or every click Jumpshot is collecting from Avast users. When Avast was asked about the collected data being shared with, along with information about the Omnicom contract the company declined to answer and provided a contact for Jumpshot.

The best part is it is expected to come with S Pen, similar to the one you get in Galaxy Note 10 series, which the Galaxy Fold missed. It will prove to be a good choice because the S Pen is said to avoid denting the glass an is an excellent addition for large screen devices.
