The first Android 11 beta update now available for Pixel 2 and newer devices

At last, Google has finally launched its latest operating system which is Android 11. At the moment only the beta version of OS has been released for the Pixel users. The company has called off its Google IO 2020 due to coronavirus and the launch was scheduled for June 3. But due to Black Lives Matter protests in the US and across the world again the introduction of Android 11 Beta was postponed. The stable update is expected to be available to all the Android devices by the end of this year.

Android 11 Beta is now available for the Google Pixel 2 and later devices. Lots of speculation was also being made that during the unveiling of the newest operating system the company is expected to launch Google Pixel 4a under the mid-range segment. However, the much-anticipated device remains covered up.

Coming back to the Android 11 Beta, here is what it is going to bring to the table:

According to the company, it has focused on three key themes: People, Controls, and Privacy. With the release of the 1st beta update, the new OS brings new conversation notifications known as the bubble. It will appear in a dedicated section at the top of the shade, with a people-forward design and conversation specific actions, such as opening the conversation as a bubble, creating a conversation shortcut on the home screen, or setting a reminder. Bubbles will allow users to keep the conversation in view and more accessible while you are at multitasking. According to the company Messaging and chat apps should use the Bubbles API on notifications to enable this in Android 11. Whereas the Consolidated keyboard suggestions let the Autofill apps and Input Method to firmly suggest context-specific entities and strings straight in an IME’s suggestion strip, where they are most handy for users. Now the devices will include an on-device visual cortex that understands screen content and context and generates labels and access points for accessibility commands. The Voice access update is for the people who often control their handsets completely by voice.

The new update brings you more control for your device to make it faster as well as easier. One can draw device controls instantly at one place by long-pressing the power button. Apps can use a new API to appear in the controls. The most notable update coming to the Android 11 Beta is the Media Controls which is now cleverer to switch the output device for the audio or video content, whether it be headphones, speakers or even their TV.

Media controls in Android 11 are located near the Quick Settings. Sessions from multiple apps are arranged in a swipeable carousel. The carousel lists sessions in this order:

  •         Streams playing locally on the phone
  •         Remote streams, such as those detected on external devices or cast sessions
  •         Previous resumable sessions, in the order they were last played

Users can restart previous sessions from the carousel without having to start the app. When playback begins, the user interacts with the media controls in the usual way. For more info, click here.

In terms of privacy, Android 11 brings more control over sensitive permissions and working to keep devices more secure through faster updates. With the One-time permission, one can allow the app access to the device microphone, camera, or location, at that one time only. However, the app will be able to ask for permissions another time the next time the app is used. If a particular app is not used for an extended period of time, Android 11 will “auto-reset” all of the runtime permissions connected with the app and let the user know. The app can apply for the permissions again the next time the app is used.

Google Play System Updates, launched last year, lets us expedite updates of core OS components to devices in the Android ecosystem. In Android 11, the company has doubled the number of updatable modules, and those 12 new modules will help improve privacy, security, and consistency for users and developers.

“Android 11 also includes a number of other developer productivity improvements like wireless ADB debugging, ADB incremental for faster installs of large APKs, and more nullability annotations on platform APIs (to catch issues at build time instead of runtime), and more.” the company in its blog post said.

According to the company, the first Beta for Android 11 is now available for Pixel 2, 3, 3a, or 4 devices. One can enroll here to get Android 11 Beta updates over-the-air.

Samsung Galaxy M21 Review: A robust all-rounder

The South Korean smartphone company, Samsung, brought Galaxy M21 in India just ahead of the lockdown imposed in the country to contain the spread of coronavirus. The lockdown has affected the sale of the product because the online and the offline retailer too were shut down. But now, when the government allowed the companies to begin working, Samsung Galaxy M21 sales have begun. Samsung has a good reputation and high expectations among its fans for offering robust mobile handsets in all the price segments. Samsung Galaxy M21 is an upgrade over its predecessor Galaxy M20 that was launched last year. So, today we bring to you the review of Galaxy M21 to find out if it is worth a buy.

Design and Display

Starting with the design first, the Samsung Galaxy M21 comes with a plastic body, which does seem to draw some fingerprints. But, nothing a quick wipe cannot take care of. Usually, Samsung gives a back cover in its boxes, but this time we did not find one in the box of Samsung Galaxy M21. For the review, we received the black option with a glossy finish. Other than this the smartphone is available in Blue colour as well.

The Samsung Galaxy M21 features a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display, which is protected with a shield of Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to prevent scratches. It comes with a centrally positioned waterdrop notch to accommodate a selfie camera just underneath an earpiece. It has lean bezels and an apparent chin. On the right side rim, the company has provided a relatively big volume rocker key. To raise the volume you have to make use of both your hands as it is a fairly large device. Beneath it, there is a power button and on the other side, you get a sim/microSD card slot. The audio jack, USB Type-C port and the speaker grille are prearranged at the base.

Samsung Galaxy M21

The Samsung Galaxy M21 comes with curved edges and it feels less bulky beside the fact that it packs a massive 6,000mAh battery. On rolling it over you get a glossy back panel and the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner has been placed well to unlock the handset single-handedly. On the top left area of the back, there is a rectangular shaped camera module housing three camera sensors along with an LED flash. The Samsung branding has been imprinted some inches above the bottom rim.

Samsung Galaxy M21

As said, Samsung Galaxy M21 arrives with a 6.4-inch full-HD+ Infinity-U Super AMOLED display offering 1080×2340 pixels of resolution with 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The display presents punchy colours and we had no difficulty in viewing the phone from any position. If you feel that the screen is too intense you can trigger the adaptive brightness that diminishes the strain on eyes. The display is dazzling when used outdoors even under intense sunlight. We enjoyed watching movies and streaming Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos to cut the dullness while staying at home during the coronavirus lockdown.

So we can proudly say that at such low a cost it offers a stunning display along with good viewing angles.

Performance and Camera

The Samsung Galaxy M21 originates its command from a 2.3GHz octa-core Exynos 9611 processor together with Mali-G72 MP3 GPU for graphics. We tested the 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage option, however, the company offers one more option to choose that is 4GB RAM with 64GB storage.

The performance of the smartphone was up to the mark in terms of everyday usage and multitasking, but in terms of profound gaming, we became aware of some lag while playing PUBG or Call of Duty at top graphic settings. We would not advise you to use high-settings if you are a demanding gamer.

Samsung Galaxy M21

In terms of the user interface M21 runs on One UI 2.0 on top of Android 10 so you are benefited with the Dark Mode that doesn’t hurt your eyes when the phone is particularly used at night. We found some bloatware that comes preinstalled on the handset such as Amazon, Netflix, Dailyhunt, Prime Video and Helo, however, the device’s UI is clean and fresh. While setting up, the phone suggested installing a number of other apps, too. For the gamers, the smartphone comes preinstalled with the Game Booster feature that when turned on blocks all the notifications for a smooth gaming session.

We usually have been impressed with Samsung smartphones as they deliver good battery life and this device is no different. It comes with a massive 6,000mAh battery inside. So we don’t have to be anxious about charging the phone over and over again because while reviewing the battery lasted quite longer than usual. For us, it lasted for more than 48 hours but if you watch HD videos and do intensive gaming, it can last for a day. The battery is supported by a 15W fast charger, which takes almost two hours to charge the phone from zero to one hundred percent.

Samsung Galaxy M21

Coming to the most important part of our review, which is the camera performance. Samsung provides a triple rear camera set up in Galaxy M21, which comprises of a 48-megapixel primary lens with  f/2.0 aperture, paired with 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle sensor with  f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel depth sensor for taking portraits. The camera app includes modes such as Live Focus, Pro, Night, Food, Super Slow-Mo, Panorama Hyperlapse and Slow Motion to boost the camera performance.

Normal Mode
Samsung Galaxy M21
Wide angle mode

The phone managed to get on good and vibrant pictures in good lighting or natural daylight. The wide-angle pictures were not very detailed. We expected it to be a bit sharper. The close-up shots were satisfactory; the depth between the subject and the background was natural. However, the camera struggled while taking low light images. We were not pleased with the image quality it delivered and when the wide-angle lens was enabled.

For selfies, Samsung Galaxy M21 comes with a 20-megapixel front-facing camera. We noted similar problems while snapping selfies in low light. The images turned out to be a little grainy and lacked details. When taken in good lighting conditions it clicked way better shots. So we can say the performance of the camera is average as low light pictures were not much impressive.

Verdict

All in all, Samsung has offered Galaxy M21 with proprietary design and a massive 6,000mAh battery, which we think is not a bad deal when it comes to the pricing. The device comes with an asking price of Rs 13,999 via e-commerce platforms for the 4GB RAM. It comes with an improved camera system over its predecessor, but some tweaks remain. As a final point, we would just say it is just a decent device at this price point when we compare it to other devices being offered by Realme and Xiaomi in terms of hardware. You can go for it if you want to enjoy long gaming or Netflix sessions without the hassle of charging it over and over.

Pros

Excellent Display

Super long battery life

Good built

Cons

Fingerprint magnet

Cameras need a bit of work

Bose likely to introduce a gaming version of its QC35 II headphones

1

In what seems to be a strategy to prep-up for against rivals in the competitive and ever-growing market for video game audio, Bose is reportedly working on a gaming version of its QC35 II headphones.

According to 9to5Google, its “APK Insight team has discovered that the latest update to the Bose Connect app includes references to a currently unannounced headset, the “QC35 II Gaming Headset,” including a video.”

In the APK of version 12.0 of the Bose Connect App, it was found that the new gaming headset has been codenames as “Tibbers.” This was the name of a stuffed Teddy Bear carried by the champion Annie from the popular MOBA game “League of Legends”. Annie can bring the ferocious Tibbers to life to destroy her enemies as her Ultimate Ability.

What more could be found while diving deep into the string of code is that there is an explicit mention of a product called the “Bose QC35 II Gaming Headset.” As per the news report, “These gaming microphone strings are going to be connected to a product tour video, which was also included in the Bose Connect update and pretty clearly shows a microphone attachment connecting to a QC35 II headset.”

Moreover, it was reported that the Bose Connect App is created to enable the Bose device owners to easily connect its audio products and access various settings. However, if Bose is prepping-up for the launch of a QC35 II Gaming Headset, than it would be require an app too as each and every app has individual settings to support different devices.

The Bose Connect app gives its users easy access to everything that the product has to offer. One can unlock product features and personalize the settings so that the users can spend more time enjoying the music instead of setting it up.

Besides this, the Bose Connect app user can also easily manage all the Bluetooth connections. Go from taking a call on your smartphone to listening to music on your tablet to watching a movie on your laptop with one single swipe.

Twitter’s adaptation of stories “Fleets” arrived in India, now accessible via the mobile app

The microblogging website Twitter has rolled out a new feature on its platform. After bringing scheduling and limiting replies on tweets the platform has introduced  “Fleets”. The feature is now available to Android and iOS users in India. According to the company, the feature will be rolled out in a staged manner for the users in the country along with the latest version of its mobile app update. The feature’s functionality is similar to WhatsApp’s status and Instagram and Facebook stories. Twitter’s Fleets will vanish after 24 hours from the user’s timeline. Unlike tweets, Fleets can’t receive Likes, Replies or Retweets. One can just respond to the Fleets via Direct Message.

Fleets were first introduced in Brazil and Italy back in March this year. Now Twitter’s product lead Kayvon Beykpour announced the availability of this feature in India via Twitter. The tweet reads, Namaste! Starting today, Fleets are coming to India. If you’re in India, check it out and let us know what you think! #FleetsFeedback” With the arrival of Fleets one can share their everyday things on Twitter. Unlike stories which are private and can only be viewed by those who are following you, Fleets can be viewed simply by visiting someone’s profile and tapping on the top of the screen. But it cannot be shared or embedded on a third-party platform, unlike tweets.

After rolling out to Brazil and Italy the feature has been expanded to India. In the country, the microblogging website had around  55 million active users in April this year.

According to a report by TechCrunch, Manish Maheshwari, Managing Director at Twitter India, said in a statement, “India is important for Twitter since it is one of our largest and fastest-growing audience markets globally. We are excited to bring the Fleets experiment to India and make it one of the first three countries in the world to experience this new product. From the test in India, we’ll learn how adding a new mode of conversation changes the way Indians engage on Twitter. It’ll also be interesting to see if it further amplifies the diversity of usage by allowing people to share what they’re thinking in a way that is light-touch and light-hearted”

How does Fleets work and how to post it?

Fleets are as simple as sharing your stories over Facebook and Instagram which disappears after 24 hours after being posted on your profile. It appears at the top of the home screen.

This feature is currently available on the mobile platform only. If you have updated your Twitter app and have access to Fleets you can post your everyday things, thoughts, pictures and more by tapping on the + icon.

Know how Google Cloud’s new security features will help you safeguard your data

0

Google Cloud, not only helps its users to store data, but also invests in protecting and securing its customers’ data across all the products. “As enterprise storage needs grow, our security and compliance protections grow too. Cloud Storage secures data by default with rich security controls and the ability to audit as needed,” said Subhasish Chakraborty, Product Manager at Google Cloud Storage. For this, Google Cloud has announced the product updates to protect your data even in complex and multi-cloud environments.

V4 signature support is one of the new security features in Cloud Storage. According to the tech giant, “V4 signature capability enables customers to generate signed URLs (also referred to as pre-signed URLs) with limited permissions and duration, which they can issue to their clients/users who don’t need to have a Google identity.”

The official Google Cloud blog post further added that hash-based message authentication (HMAC) for Cloud Storage service accounts is another latest security feature. A per Google Cloud, “You can now manage and use hash-based message authentication (HMAC) credentials associated with Cloud Storage service accounts, rather than user accounts. This feature strengthens your authentication and security by not having to rely on credentials tied to the user accounts.” Additionally, this feature also enables you interoperate seamlessly among multiple cloud vendors with regards to security and authentication setups and practices.

The third feature to join the list of latest security update of Google Cloud is uniform bucket-level access for Cloud Identity and Access Management (Cloud IAM). The Cloud IAM allows a user to apply access policies by role to Cloud Storage users, along with other Google Cloud products. “The new uniform bucket-level access feature lets you uniformly configure access through Cloud IAM Policies to your Cloud Storage resources, allowing for manageability at scale. When it’s enabled on a bucket, only bucket-level Cloud IAM permissions grant access to that bucket and the objects it contains,” the official blog post revealed.

In addition to these features, Google Cloud Storage protects data by default with rich security controls and the ability to audit as required. “Features like Bucket Lock, Cloud Key Management Service (KMS), and Access Transparency already help keep your data safe in Cloud Storage,” added Subhasish Chakraborty.

Facebook files lawsuit against 12 domain names registered by India-based proxy service

0

With an aim to prevent fraud and stop the malicious use of Facebook company and product names, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company has now filed a lawsuit in Virginia against 12 domain names registered by India-based proxy service Compsys Domain Solutions Private Ltd. According to the social networking giant, these domain names were designed to deceive people by impersonating as Facebook’s family of apps, like: facebook-verify-inc.com, instagramhjack.com and videocall-whatsapp.com.

“We regularly scan the internet for domain names and apps that infringe on our trademarks and today’s lawsuit is part of this ongoing effort to protect people from phishing, credential theft and other methods of online fraud. We filed suit after we reached out to Compsys about these domain names and did not receive any response,” Christen Dubois, Director and Associate General Counsel, IP Litigation at Facebook, said in a blog post.

According to Facebook, Registrars and proxy services have a responsibility to take down deceptive and malicious websites. Asserting that the social-networking giant will continue to take legal action to protect the people who use its services, Dubois added, “We filed similar lawsuits against Namecheap and its proxy service this past March, and OnlineNIC and its proxy service in October 2019.”

Meanwhile, Facebook has also executed its plan to label media outlets that are wholly or partially under the editorial control of their respective government. The aim is to bring more transparency to its users for understanding who’s behind the news they see on Facebook.

“We’re providing greater transparency into these publishers because they combine the influence of a media organization with the strategic backing of a state, and we believe people should know if the news they read is coming from a publication that may be under the influence of a government,” Nathaniel Gleicher, Head of Cybersecurity Policy at Facebook, said in an official blog post.

Moreover, Facebook will also start labelling ads from state-controlled media outlets later this year to ensure the users that it’s equally transparent when it comes to paid content. According to social-networking giant, “State-controlled media outlets rarely advertise in the US. Nevertheless, later this summer we will begin blocking ads from these outlets in the US out of an abundance of caution to provide an extra layer of protection against various types of foreign influence in the public debate ahead of the November 2020 election in the US.”

If a user searches for public transit directions for a trip that is likely to be affected by COVID-19 restrictions, Google Maps will show relevant alerts from local transit agencies. With the help of these alerts, you’ll get to know if government mandates impact transit services or require you to wear a mask on public transportation and prepare accordingly. According to Ramesh Nagarajan, Product Management Director at Google Maps: “Transit alerts are rolling out in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Mexico, Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, United Kingdom and the U.S. where we have information from local transit agencies, with more coming soon.”

“We’re also introducing driving alerts to notify you about COVID-19 checkpoints and restrictions along your route, like when crossing national borders (starting first in Canada, Mexico and the U.S.). You’ll see an alert on the directions screen and after starting navigation if your route is impacted by these restrictions,” he added.

If a user is navigating to medical facilities or COVID-19 testing centres, Google Maps will show an alert reminding you to verify eligibility and facility guidelines to avoid being turned away or causing additional strain on the local healthcare system. The alerts for medical facilities, which is starting this week, will be accessible in Indonesia, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea, and the US, and testing centre alerts will be available in the US.

Besides this, Google Maps are actively working with other agencies around the world to bring even more of this helpful data to its users.

In 2019, the teach giant had introduced crowdedness predictions for public transit in Google Maps. “We’re now making it simpler for people to contribute crowdedness information for their transit lines. Look up Directions, tap through to see the Transit Details, then scroll down to find crowdedness predictions (where available) and easily contribute your own experiences,” an official Google blog post revealed.

In addition to this, Google Maps has recently announced new insights like temperature, accessibility and security onboard, as well as designated women’s sections in regions where transit systems have them. Now available globally, these insight will help Google Maps users find feedback from past riders when available and submit your own, right alongside public transit routes. To help wheelchair users around the world know before they go, Google Maps has added more granular accessibility information for people to find and contribute, including where there are wheelchair accessible doors, seating, stop buttons and more.

OnePlus all set to expand its Smart TV portfolio in India on July 2

0

In order to step-up its competition against Xiaomi, TCL, realme amongst other, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau took to Twitter to announce, “It’s official. We’re making our premium smart TV experience more accessible to our Indian community.” The official launch date announced is July 2.

This statement by the OnePlus CEO hints that the upcoming smart TV variant by this Chinese smartphone manufacturer will make the smartphone to larger consumer base by introducing it at an affordable price.

In an interview with ET Telecom, Navnit Nakra, OnePlus India’s new Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, revealed, “Entry and mid segments are growing rapidly and have captured our focus. If we want to diversify to a wide audience in India, then it is the best way to start. With better connectivity and OTT content availability, the smart TV segment has started growing and growth is happening across segments. The objective of our new strategy is to share technology with more users. In that sense, we are looking at new product lines.”

According to ET Telecom, OnePlus will introduce its entry-level smart TV series for approximately Rs 15,000, while the cost of mid-range series is likely to be in range of Rs 20,000-Rs 40,000.

In the “Television Market in India (LED, LCD, HD, UHD) 2019” report by ResearchAndMarkets.com, it was revealed that the Indian television market is highly competitive and is dominated by significant players like Samsung, LG and Sony, and they collectively constitute a substantial share of the market. Nevertheless, foreign players like Xiaomi, Realme and OnePlus are flourishing and have captured a considerable share in a short span, owing to their affordable products with a wide variety of features. Moreover, the online sale of television sets has increased considerably in the past few years, posing a threat to conventional sales channels.

The smart TV segment accounts for a significant share of more than 70% of the overall television market. Foreign players like Xiaomi, OnePlus and Motorola have disrupted the smart TV segment in India with the launch of its range of affordable products. The flat panel television (LED, LCD, HD, and UHD) market in India is expected to reach Rs 1,238.33 billion by FY 2024, expanding at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of ~9.25% during the FY 2019-FY 2024 period.

With the launch of this upcoming smart TV, let’s wait and watch how OnePlus will take on its competitor to strengthen its foothold in the sub-continent’s smart TV market.
