COVID-19 outbreak: WhatsApp introduces new update to simplify video calling

0

As people are talking to doctors, teachers, and isolated loved ones via WhatsApp during this Coronavirus outbreak. The Facebook-owned instant messaging app has now unveiled a new update for its application to make it easier for its users to initiate video calling through the app.

This new update allows the WhatsApp users to start the call as soon as they clicks on the video call button without showing any pop-up message to add group members. Mind you! This new update can be enjoyed only on the group of four or even less members.

“We’ve made it easier than ever to start a group call from WhatsApp for groups of 4 or less. From your group chat tap the video or voice call icon to directly start a call with everyone in the chat! ” as per a tweet by WhatsApp.

Prior to this new update, WhatsApp users had to first tap on the video call icon and then had to choose the group members they want to strike a conversation with.

Recently, WhatsApp has also put a limit on such message so that it can only be forwarded to one chat at a time. WhatsApp has also announced that all the messages and calls on its platform are end-to-end encrypted by default to give its users a secure place to carry out most personal conversations. The announcement has been made at a time when WhatsApp is bridging the gap in communication as billions of people are practising social distancing due to COVID-19 outbreak.

“We’ve taken several steps over the years to help keep conversations intimate. For example, we previously set limits on forwarded messages to constrain virality, which led to a 25% decrease in message forwards globally at the time,” as per a blog post by WhatsApp.

Asserting that not all forwarding is bad, WhatsApp revealed that many of its users forward helpful information, as well as funny videos, memes, and reflections or prayers they find meaningful. On the contrary, WhatsApp also registered a drastic increase in the amount of forwarding which users can feel overwhelming and can contribute to the spread of misinformation. WhatsApp believes it’s important to slow the spread of these messages down to keep its platform a place for personal conversation.

Moreover, WhatsApp has also directly collaborated with NGOs and governments, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and more than 20 national health ministries, to help connect people with accurate information. Together these trusted authorities have sent hundreds of millions of messages directly to people requesting information and advice.

Airtel is the worst broadband provider throughout India during lockdown

We still remember Airtel being on top of the pyramid when it came to broadband internet in India. Yes, it was expensive from day one, but what made them stand out was exceptional 2 to 4 hour turnaround time if the broadband connection goes down. However, now when the playfield is levelled due to the lockdown, Airtel has fallen off its pedestal and hard. Well, this was bound to happen as Airtel service, broadband speed and data limit has been the worst amongst the current players. We have been closely watching how the broadband industry is turning out in the last two years and frankly, there are providers which are much much better than Airtel.

But, let’s first talk about the current scenario. Airtel is the only broadband player in the country who is not giving extra speed or extra data to its customers. While Act Fibrenet and Excitel were one of the first to give 300Mbps speeds with unlimited data in March and it has continued to April, Airtel is not even giving the speed its customers were promised at the time of buying the connection. As per 150 respondents in metros and cities of India such as Delhi, Chennai, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bangalore and Lucknow, 90% are waiting for the lockdown to lift and they will switch over from Airtel to some other broadband that cares for work from home customers.

Over that, 84% of the respondents said who play games in some format (Mobile, PC or Console) the pings on broadband connections other than Airtel are more stable. A good ping is essential when playing online games, moreover, it should not spike, which is the case with Airtel broadband. 63% of the people we asked said because they do not get optimum speed on Airtel broadband their gaming experience goes for a toss and customer care of Airtel does not understand that. Some of the people switch to Hotspot on their mobile connection from Reliance JIO to play a stable game, which speaks a lot.

Coming to the service, Airtel is taking more than 2 days during lockdown to get the connection back up to its customers and in some cases more than 5 days. Puneet, a resident of New Friends Colony said that he had to wait for 3 days for the internet to come back again from Airtel and it was an external fault so their service executive could have easily fixed it, but still took a very long time. Compared to Act, Excitel and even Hathaway this is much higher. These companies are normally fixing spoiled connection with 24-48 hours during the lockdown.

Coming to work from home scenarios, we spoke to Airtel customer care on Twitter as well on the phone and they kept lying to us at various levels. A 40Mbps connection is supposed to get that much speed, however, it is only Airtel who is duping customers and giving them much lower speeds. In our case just 24Mbps and when raised every time they say (since the last 750 days) that they will increase, but after 1-2 days of raising the concern the customer care executive comes back to us and says we will not give you more than 24Mbps even if we promise 40Mbps. During lockdown also they are not giving the promised speed.

But the story does not end here. We spoke to Raghav Chopra a BPO executive staying in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, he said he also was promised 40Mbps speed (at a premium of 25-30% when compared to ACT) but he is getting max 24Mbps before lockdown. However, after the lockdown, his speed has been reduced to 16Mbps. While others are increasing speeds, Airtel has reduced and Raghav is not the only one facing slow speeds. There are many of the respondents we asked facing the same problem. When they contact the Airtel customer care, they face very long wait time and are greeted with just one sentence, we will try to fix and get back to you, you are important to us (when clearly the customer is not important to them anymore). If this what the biggest telecom company of India is doing, the end for them is very near.

Many in the list also had a concern at low speeds from Airtel they cannot do office work properly during the lockdown, stream content or even play low ping games. We asked an ISP honcho, on the basis of anonymity he told us, Airtel does not have the power to increase speed, their network will fall down and that is why they lie/give odd answers. Their broadband Tariff plans are the most expensive amongst all players and are sham/eye-wash, which the current generation is waking up to. If one gets a chance to switch from Airtel they should at once. As Airtel broadband like its mobile network has become the worst in the country.

They are now at the bottom of the pyramid and need to do some serious thinking as while many are giving unlimited data during the lockdown, Airtel is not even ready to give more than an additional 10GB, which when working from home or streaming movies will exhaust very quickly. So, what happens when you run out of data? Airtel customer care will offer you a solution. What is that solution? Make Airtel richer by buying extra bytes, which is so expensive that it will burn a hole in your pocket. And if you are working from home, you would need to shell it out as you have to work. So, Airtel is taking these tough times as an opportunity and using it make itself richer.

As Honor 30 Pro is all set to make a debut on April 15 at an online event in China, Honor President Zhao Ming has come out with a few official renders of this much-anticipated handset on Weibo, revealing that the smartphone likely to come with a quad-lens camera setup.

The leaked renders give us a glimpse of how the back panel of Honor 30 Pro smartphone would appear. It seems to be in line with Huawei P40 Pro. Rumour mills have speculated that the Honor 30 Pro could house a quadruple camera on its rear hull with a 50MP main sensor along with full-pixel Octa PD autofocus and a periscope module.

As far as other specification are concerned, leaks reveal that Honor 30 Pro could be equipped with a 6.57-inch FHD+ AMOLED display and run on Kirin 990 5G processor along with at least 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. Moreover, the 30 Pro is expected to have at least 8GB of RAM and 256GB storage. Mind you! The storage capacity can be extended further via nanoSD.

Moving on to the battery aspect, the battery mentioned by THE TENAA for Honor 30 Pro is 3900mAh, which is seemingly not up to mark for this type of 5G smartphone.

What lacks in Honor 30 Pro is that the handset is devoid of Google services. However, it is rumoured that the smartphone will feature Qwant instead of Google Search and the App Gallery instead of Google Play. Well, things will be clearer on April 15th with the official launch of Honor 30 Pro.

Recently, Honor 30S, the first product in the Honor 30 series, was officially announced for the Chinese Mainland market. It is the first 5G smartphone to be released in Honor’s 2020 lineup with the brand new Kirin 820 SoC, bringing flagship-level performance and 5G capabilities to the Kirin 8 chipset series.

Honor 30S smartphone also features a beautiful 3D effect on its back for the red, green, black and white colours. When held at different angles to catch the light, the curved glass back resembles a butterfly spreading its wings. It is equipped with a 64-megapixel all-focus AI quad-camera module. The lens modules used in Honor 30S include a 64-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel 3x optical zoom lens, an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle lens and 2-megapixel macro lens that covers all scenarios from 17- to 80mm. Honor 30S smartphone houses a 4000mAh battery. In addition, the Honor 30S is certified by TUV Rheinland as a standard 40W fast charging product, and can be charged to 70 percent of its battery level in 30 minutes.

Sony gives the first look of PlayStation 5’s DualSense controller

We are all waiting with bated breaths for the PlayStation 5. And Sony, on the other hand, is keeping it well under wraps. So any news about the upcoming console is a reason for excitement for gamers. Today, however, Sony has shared the official image of the controller of PlayStation 5. The company has also revealed that it will be calling the controller of the next generation console as DualSense.

Sony may not have shared what the exactly the PlayStation 5 will look like, and this may disappoint a few fans, but then, on the upside, the image that it has shared shows a great deviation in controller design. The DualSense looks very different from controllers of other PlayStation consoles.

Not only does the DualSense look different from other controllers, it has some key changes in terms of functions too. The new controller comes with haptic feedback, instead of rumble technology that was there in predecessors. The company has also added ‘adaptive triggers’ to the controller and as the name suggests, these can be used to regulate the resistance of of the triggers to suit various kinds of gameplay effects.

Besides this, the DualSense is Sony’s first controller to come with an integrated microphone and it will also come with a USB-C port.

PlayStation 5‘s controller will sport a two-tone colour scheme and it has completely been revamped in terms of the design. The image shared by Sony revealed that the shape of the grips as well as the face buttons of DualSense controller will be more rounded.

In addition to this, the share button on the controller will now be called as the ‘Create’ button, and according to Sony, it will come with “new ways for players to create epic gameplay content to share with the world.”

These were the key details that have been announced by the company so far. However, Sony has mentioned that it will be announcing other details closer to the launch of PlayStation 5.

But before we sign off, we should mention some other changes that have been included in the upcoming PlayStation controller. There are some subtle customizations that can be noticed on the DualSense controller. For instance, the PlayStation button on the new controller will actually be in the shape of PS logo. The design of the triggers is also different from previous controllers.

Some of the things are actually the same as earlier. These include the touchpad in the center of the controller, the light bar, the symmetrical layout, among others.

Google April 2020 security update started rolling out with some bug fixes, face unlock feature fixed

Last month the search giant Google released a new setting for Google Pixel 4’s face unlocks. The feature appears to be available in the device’s setting that was called “Require eyes to be open”. While unlocking the phone the user needs to keep their eyes open for biometrics.

The option was found when searched for “eyes” on the Google Pixel 4’s settings. As the name suggests in order to unlock the device the user “Require eyes to be open” as it explains itself but unfortunately the new biometrics setting is stuck on the regular Face unlock screen that it can be unlocked even if your eyes are closed. Prior to its launch, the company advertised about its new radar-based hardware under the “Project Soli” on the Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL that promised motion-based controls and 3D face unlocking that was also inefficient. As promised the most anticipated feature of Project Soli is that the device can be unlocked even if the user’s eyes are closed.

On the first Monday of the month, Google usually pushes software updates for its devices. On-time Google’ s April update has now been rolled out however this should reach the devices in a staged manner. Like we mentioned before the company did provide the Face unlock which did not require to be eyes open but half baked. Now throughout the latest update, the company has now fixed the feature. Now the user can ask the face unlock software to check if their eyes are open before their device is unlocked. This means now nobody would be able to snoop into your device while you are asleep which is a big relief for the users now. By default, the new setting is turned on but if it did not bother you much it can also be disabled.

In addition to this, the April update includes a patch for dropped Bluetooth audio input incall in a particular situation, a fix for occasional lag while opening the keyboard in some apps. A fix for a memory leak that can prevent additional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connections.

The OTA update comes with QQ2A.200405.005 build number for the April update on Pixel devices namely  Pixel 4, Pixel 4 XL, Pixel 3, Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL, Pixel 2, and Pixel 2 XL. You who are impatient can also download the update by flashing software from recovery or just wait for the over-the-air rollout to reach your Pixel.

Apple is likely to lift curtains off a new 14-inch MacBook Pro next Month

0

After recently unveiling the new MacBook Air with faster performance, the new Magic Keyboard, twice the storage and a new lower price, news is rife that Apple is now prepping up to launch its updated 13-inch MacBook Pro range in May.

The information has been tweeted by popular tipster Jon Prosser, who said, “If everything goes well… New 13-inch MacBook Pro (codename J223) coming next month. Note: it’s a refresh to the current 13-inch. So the bigger 14-inch display upgrade is a big possibility.”

It’s expected that the bigger 14-inch screen of the upgraded MacBook Pro will house narrower bezels along with a new scissor-switch Magic keyboard. Moreover, it will be equipped with the latest Intel CPUs that could be the 10th-generation Ice Lake chips.

The leak by tipster Jon Prosser goes in accordance with what TF International Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had revealed on MacRumors recently. As per Kuo, “We predict that Apple is currently developing six mini-LED-support products (vs. the previous report of only two products), including a 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌, a 27-inch ‌iMac Pro‌ in 4Q20, a 14.1-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ (upgraded from 13.3-inch), a 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, a 10.2-inch ‌iPad‌, and a 7.9-inch ‌iPad‌ mini in 2020.”

Besides this, a report mentioning analyst Ming-Chi Kuo hints that Apple is also gearing up to rollout “several” ARM processors-based Mac notebooks and desktops in 2021. It is expected that the tech giant will create its own customized its own custom designed ARM-based processors through its next-generation Mac devices. It is believed that by using ARM-based processors, Apple will bring down the cost of processor by almost 40 to 60 percent as against what it spends on Intel processors, MacRumors quoted Kuo as saying.

Now even a 9to5Mac report has revealed that Apple is planning to strike a $100-million deal to acquire Orange County-based VR firm NextVR. If we believe the rumour mills, the tech giant is working on a headset capable of running both AR and VR technologies. Back in 2018, a CNet report had revealed that the project, which had been codenamed T288, is still in its early stages but is slated for release in 2020. However, the current rumours hints that an AR/VR headset could be released as early as 2021.

Mind you! NextVR has world-class partnerships with leaders in sports and entertainment, including the NBA, WWE, FOX Sports, Live Nation, and the International Champions Cup. The company also provides VR experiences for watching live events through VR headsets from Oculus Rift and Quest, HTC Vive and VIVE Pro, PlayStation, Microsoft, Google amongst many others.

Microsoft Edge was first released for Windows 10 and Xbox One in the year 2015  then for Google’s Android and 1OS in 2017 and macOS in 2019.

Edge comes integrated with the company’s own Cortana and extensions hosted by Microsoft store. Then in 2019, the company rebuilt Edge as a CHromium based browser with the use of Blink and V8 engines. Soon after it was accessible to Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and macOS along with Windows 10. Just a month ago the company announced that it will itself bar the users from downloading adware and cryptominers which serves as a great security benefit guarding against potentially unwanted applications.

Hoever, there is no official announcement made by Apple about the acquisition of NextVR, the 9to5Mac report informed that a shell company created this year that’s believed to be Apple is hiring most of the engineers from NextVR. It further added that the two companies have started telling employees who will likely need to relocate from the San Diego area to the Cupertino area.

Since long, news is rife that Apple is working on a headset capable of running both AR and VR technology. As per the rumour mills, the plans so far call for an 8K display for each eye that would be untethered from a computer or smartphone. Back in 2018, a CNet report had revealed that the project, which had been codenamed T288, is still in its early stages but is slated for release in 2020. However, the current rumours hints that an AR/VR headset could be released as early as 2021.

Recently, Apple has acquired DarkSky app that is known for its radar maps and accuracy of its weather predictions. It is likely that the tech giant will use Dark Sky’s know how to come up with its own Weather app.

“Our goal has always been to provide the world with the best weather information possible, to help as many people as we can stay dry and safe, and to do so in a way that respects your privacy. There is no better place to accomplish these goals than at Apple. We’re thrilled to have the opportunity to reach far more people, with far more impact, than we ever could alone,” the Dark Sky team wrote in a blog post.

COVID-19: Google Maps to show the locations of the public food shelters and public night shelters in India

A new initiative has been taken by Google Maps together with the government’s citizen engagement platform MyGov to provide information related to public food shelters and public night shelters across 30 cities in India. The company has been working with the government to provide the location of the relief centers to find essential services during the lockdown situation in the country.

Google in its statement said, “To date, across 30 cities, people can now find these locations on Google Maps, Search and Google Assistant. Users can search for ‘Food shelters in ‘ or ‘Night shelters in ‘ in any of these Google products. The service will also be made available in Hindi soon”

MyGovIndia shared the important piece of information with the public through its official Twitter handle. Search on Google or Google Maps for “Food Shelter Near Me” or “Night Shelter Near Me” to find the closest shelter.”

In a country like India, those who need the services don’t possess a smartphone so Google will also provide the information to the Jio Phone users with the help of Google Assistant. However, it could have reached the other telecom operators running in the country such as Vodafone Idea and Airtel which could prove to be more beneficial to non-Jio users also. The company is also working to expand the experience to the people in other Indian languages. The search giant has also promised to add additional shelter details on its platform such as Google Maps, Google search as well as Google Assistant in more Indian cities.

According to Google India Senior Programme Manager, Anal Ghosh “Highlighting the locations of food and night shelters on Google Maps is a step to make this information easily available to the users in need, and ensure they can avail the food and shelter services being provided by the government authorities,”. He further added, “With the help of volunteers, NGOs, and traffic authorities, we hope to convey this important information to the affected people, many of whom may not have access to a smartphone or mobile device during this time.”

The new platform is optimized for enthusiasts and creators by delivering the fastest frequency in the industry with 5 GHz across the majority of the volume which will deliver amazing game play and rich creation for users,” said Fredrik Hamberger, general manager of the premium and gaming laptop segments at Intel.

Wondering why the 10th Gen Intel Core H-series mobile platform is important? It gives up to 44% better overall performance for faster, more responsive productivity users can feel and nearly two times faster 4K video rendering and export making it faster and easier to create and share.

The 10th Gen Intel Core i7-10750H processor with up to 5.0 GHz3 Turbo is purpose-built for enthusiast gamers and creators demanding optimized performance.

Meanwhile, the Intel Foundation will provide $4 million to support coronavirus relief efforts in communities where the company has significant presence like in the US, Costa Rica, India, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, Mexico and Vietnam. The $4 million donation will be distributed to community foundations and organizations that are focused on food security, shelter, medical equipment and small-business support.
