Sony WH-XB900N headphones review: The same sugary sound at a lesser price

When it comes to great audio, there are only a handful of premium headphone makers available in India. And the most sought after, which has been doing business for years in India is Sony. After the success of Sony WH-1000XM3, which were launched last year, the Japanese major launched the Sony WH-XB900N headphones in India. Yes, we too are not a big fan of how the company has named its headphones, but what we are an admirer of is the resonance they provide. We got to play with these wireless headphones for well over 15 days and this is what we could make of them.

In This Article

Design

The Sony WH-XB900N headphones are very similar to look at when you compare them to WH-1000XM3. From a distance, you can even mistake them for each other. However, there are subtle differences upfront and once can see that the Sony WH-XB900N headphones do come with plastics that are just a notch below the premium version. More so because the makers wanted to provide all the cool things like active noise cancellation and tap to operate earcup in a less expensive sound module. Nonetheless, Sony has done a good job overall. As the built is robust, the cushioning is great on both the earcups and headbands and one does not get any feeling of flimsiness from them. Available in two colours, Blue and Black, we tested the black ones out and they are as black as one can get. The left year cup has the 3.5mm audio port (in case you run out of battery), USB Type-C charging port, the power button (which also double up as the BT button), LED indicator and a custom button. NFC logo can also be found here. Sony log is placed on both sides of the over-the-ear style headphones. Microphones can be found on both the earcups since they actively cancel noise. The headphones listen to the ambient sounds and cut them down. The right ear cup is plain since that is the area where you will swipe up or down to decrease or increase the volume or swipe left or right to play the previous or next track. Tap it to play or pause a song. A 2.5 feet aux cable is also supplied in the box with a short USB Type-C charging cable. Maybe Sony thought one will only charge the Sony WH-XB900N headphones via a laptop. Also, in the box, you get a string carry bag, which does seem premium but you do miss the hard carry case that comes with its predecessor. Again, all this has been done to keep the price low.

Performance

Sony WH-XB900N headphones are great when they start working. Setting them up is easy and one can download the Connect app on Android and iOS to explore all its features. All the cool stuff from the previous generation comes back in these too. Like for instance if you are in a plane and the air hostess wants to talk to you, just put 3 fingers on the right ear cup and the headphones will reduce the inside volume and seep in the ambient sound. So, you can hear her clearly, without removing the headset. The audio quality on the Sony WH-XB900N headphones is superb. Since these are from the Extra Bass series of headphones from Sony, the thump is breathtaking. The highs are great and lows are audible. Mids is something we found to the better on the previous gen, but yes those do ask for an extra shiny penny to own. The active noise cancellation feature works wonderfully well and it cuts down on 100 percent of the ambient noise when turned on. The app does a wonderful job to manage just about anything. You can choose a preset of your choice and can even manage the bass and treble. With Bluetooth 4.2 and NFC, one can easily pair them with any modern device. Formats such as aptX HD and LDAC are also supported by the Sony WH-XB900N headphones. Users can choose what the custom button can do. For instance, one can attach Google Assistant to it. Yes, these headphones are Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa ready. The battery life of the headphones after a full charge is 30 hours (playback time) as Sony says, and during our testing, it could stay alive for almost that. With a quick charge of 10 minutes, you do get 1 hour of playback time with noise cancellation on. Overall, it took us over 6.5 hours to fully charge the headphones.

Verdict

The Sony WH-XB900N headphones are great for listening to music, making a call or even accessing AI assistants. These pack up neatly as both the ear cups swivel and bend inwards. They are not very heavy to wear and since they are wireless you can lug them around anywhere at any time. If you travel a lot and want great sound power with you, these are a must-have accessory. And the price of Rs 15,500 is not bad at all for the premium sound quality they provide. We just wish a better carry case and a longer USB charging cable was part of the package, too. Pros: Excellent Sound Active Noise Cancellation Easy to operate wirelessly Cons: Carry Case Short USB Wire For the latest gadget and tech news, and gadget reviews, follow us on TwitterFacebook and Instagram. For newest tech & gadget videos subscribe to our YouTube Channel. Now Facebook will remove like counts feature on its platform

After Instagram now its Facebook’s turn that will be hiding user’s public likes from their posts. The main objective behind this bold move is that getting fewer likes on their posts brings down the user’s self-esteem who do not have a huge fan following or friends on their profiles. Due to this they feel anxious and either stop posting pictures and messages or do away from using the social media platform. In most cases, this will stop the users from sharing anything for the sake of likes. Currently, the social media giant Facebook is testing removal of Like counts on its platform and is not live for the users yet. In its new move to encourage people to post what they like instead of posting what gets them more likes, the change will only be visible to the person who shared the post and not to its followers. Instagram is already testing the same feature in 7 countries namely Canada, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Ireland, and Japan. The biggest concern is whether this change may bring positive or negligible impacts on both social media platforms. The proposed change will improve the mental health of the users,  will put less pressure on them and will encourage them to post what they like freely while preventing them from deleting the posts that they shared on Facebook that could not get much likes. The change was first spotted by Jane Manchun Wong on Facebook’s Android App. In her blog post, she said, I observed that Facebook has recently begun prototyping this hidden like/reaction count feature in their Android app by reverse-engineering the app and playing with the code underneath. She explained that the likes removal feature works similar to Instagram where people will not be able to access the amount of like a person is getting on their post. At the moment likes/reaction counts on comments are not yet hidden. Similarly, the photo-sharing app Instagram is also working on the same feature where it hides the likes count on the photos and videos that the user posts on their profiles. The change was first brought to Canada following it was further expanded to six more countries. The second de-orbiting manoeuvre for Chandryaan spacecraft was performed successfully today (September 04, 2019) beginning at 03.42 hrs IST. “The first de-orbiting maneuver was carried 19 hours earlier – a day after the lander Vikram’ was separated from the Chandrayaan 2 orbiter. The orbit of Vikram Lander is 35 km x 101 km. Apple Watch might come up with a sleep tracking feature: Can be introduced next week

As the launch of Apple’s iPhone11 is coming near more and more reports are emerging on the internet around the event. Like always this time also the smartphone company is planning to launch Apple Watch alongside its most awaited smartphone. Now a report suggests that the company is working on a sleep tracking feature for its Apple Watch series. The new feature is called “Time in Bed tracking.” It is internally codenamed as Burrito and will allow the users to track the quality of sleep, movement, heart rate, and noises. And as usual, it will be accessible via Health app and a new Sleep app. As the name suggests with the use of ‘Time in Bed’ tracking feature the user will be able to wear the Apple watch while sleeping. Wearing the Apple Watch to bed will allow it to track the user’s quality of sleep with the use of multiple sensors and inputs on it. The data then can be accessed in the Health app as well as on a new dedicated Sleep app for the Apple watch. When wearing the Watch during bedtime, if the user wakes up and starts their day before their alarm goes off, it will automatically turn off the alarm. The alarm will also play only on Apple Watch, using the iPhone as a backup. There will also be an option to use a silent alarm that only vibrates the Apple Watch. The new bedtime system will enable Do Not Disturb automatically when the user goes to bed. While many users have a habit to charge their device at night Apple Watch will come with a feature that will strike a chord to charge their watch before they go to bed so that they can wear it during sleep. However, it is not confirmed whether Apple Watch sleep tracking feature will be available on all Apple Watch models or it will only be made available to the new Watches that are expected to be unveiled on September 10 when the iPhone 11 gets launched. Previous reports suggest that the upcoming Apple watch will be launched in two casings, titanium as well as ceramic. The upgraded version of the watch will arrive in 40mm along with 44mm sizes similar to the Apple Watch Series 4. However, the company only offered the ceramic casing for Series 2 and Series 3 watches, but now the new Apple Watch Series will be arriving in both titanium and ceramic casings. YouTube made changes to Community Contributions to reduce trolling: Key details

Google-owned YouTube is the largest video streaming platform in the world and every day millions of videos are uploaded on it. You can find videos related to any topic and Millions of people stream videos on it every day. Sometimes, even if the videos uploaded by content creators are positive and not even remotely controversial, the comments below them can be hateful. In order to stop this, the video streaming platform has now set new rules around community contributions when it found its feature was misused. The new rules say contributed translations would only be published on its platform after the channel’s owner approval. This would circumvent the abusive translation being posted on a channel. First reported by The Verge that said, “Under the old system, creators could review individual contributions and had the option of disabling community contributions for specific videos or groups of videos, but most saw little downside to simply leaving the option enabled and letting translations populate without review.” From now on the users will be able to translate YouTuber’s titles and descriptions into their local language while making it more accessible globally. In a Creator Academy post from 2017, YouTube warned “While most community contributors are there to help, abuse can happen,” the post warns. “Regular review can keep things like spam links and offensive language out of your translated content.” The new rules will make harder for trolls and harassment sneak into a channel. Recently a YouTuber named JT was targeted by a harassment campaign that was based on the translations for PewDiePie’s videos this resulted in the spreading of harassing titles to other channels also. Then JT reported to YouTube’s @teamyoutube account on Twitter that recommended, “the team that works on translations is aware that this is an issue and they’re working on a fix. In the meantime, you can turn off Community Captions & remove translations that have already been published” “So you want us to report every title of every video?” JT replied. “Why not just roll out an actual fix… like having to approve them first?” A few days later YouTube gave it a thought and came with a permanent fix to this problem, “Thanks for your patience – Based on the feedback we’ve heard, we are introducing some changes to Community Contributions. Moving forward, creators that have turned on this feature will need to manually review their Community Contributions and check for spam before publishing.” This seems to be a good move by YouTube to curb trolling and hate in the community. The feature will be rolled out the world over. Google Play starts rolling out the UPI payment option in India

Google Play Store has launched Unified Payments Interface (UPI) for its users in India. As per a report, the new payment option has now been added by the software tech giant in its Play Store payment alternative. At the moment Google Play Store supports credit cards, debit cards, net banking, carrier billing via Airtel and Vodafone, Google Play Gift Cards and Google Play Balance in the country. Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is a facility provided by the Government of India in order to promote digital payments in the country. The users in India can transfer a restricted amount of cash immediately between bank accounts via UPI transfer. The software company has already launched the Google Pay app supported by UPI in the country and now Google has brought UPI payment options in its Google Play Store, too. As per a report Google Play Store v16.3.37, users have begun spotting UPI as an option. However, currently, even with its most recent version of Google Play v16.4.15 the UPI payment option was not found. So chances are with the next update users might see the option. For the unknown, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is regulated by the Reserve Bank of India and works by instantly transferring funds between two bank accounts on a mobile platform. As of March 2019, there are 142 banks live on UPI and this method is being approved by most of the apps as well as the services. Google’s own Google Pay also approves the payment method in the country. Currently, the users need to share their card details with Google from now on the users can use their UPI ID in order to make payments to purchase an app from the Google Play Store. However, UPI still requires a PIN to complete the transaction, but the smaller limits allowed by the service lessens the quantum of abuse if there is any chance of it. Since most transactions on the Google Play Store fall within this limit, users should have no problem purchasing apps and other content, while still retaining their peace of mind, a report in XDA said.
